- nourayehia, on 03/15/2009, -1/+24I am going with firebug, can't live without it :)
- jamauss, on 03/15/2009, -3/+25Dreamweaver is only a good tool when used by developers that know what they're doing. I've seen some apps produced with it that are horrendous cookie-cutter messes and are practically unmaintable. I know you could probably say that about any development tool but for some reason I see the lions share of code mess coming out of Dreamweaver. I guess it's popular among noobs and hobbyists.
- inactive, on 03/15/2009, -1/+17The biggest thing is creativity to use these tools. Usually people are just excited about using these programs and creativity takes a back seat, though it should be the other way around.
- Johnglave, on 03/15/2009, -7/+221: Firebug
2: Photoshop
3: Panic Coda
4: Dreamweaver
5: Fireworks - peterjmag, on 03/15/2009, -4/+16Give me a ***** break. I can use any old text editor for development, but I use Dreamweaver CS4 because it has one of the best code editors out there, it has a ton of useful features to make CSS and PHP (live PHP rendering in particular) quicker and easier, and it's free for me to use since my company has a full CS4 license. I agree that Dreamweaver CAN cause a mess of a site, but if you're good at your job and you know what you're doing, then that won't happen. Don't be such a snob.
- trydeblack, on 03/15/2009, -1/+12Firebug or die! Seriously though it's a great testament to how great open source can be.
- woofers07, on 03/15/2009, -0/+11The design view of DW should be used as a reference only. It's helpful to see if your divs are nested properly. NEVER edit in the design view!!
- doomchronage, on 03/15/2009, -0/+9Exactly. People bash DW way too often and don't seem to understand that it is incredibly useful for designing and managing assets if you use Code View.
- Stegg, on 03/15/2009, -1/+10Seriously? A list of 5 editors? This is digg-worthy? Is Sixrevisions paying for diggs? How is this front-page worthy, please someone tell me.
- jaygeeze, on 03/15/2009, -2/+10Fireworks is a decent graphics editor if you're strictly doing web work. What I like about it is that it just has enough features, unlike Photoshop where there's so many options and tools that you get intimidated. If you don't have CS4 yet, you're missing out, there's a ton of awesome improvements that Adobe put into Fireworks.
- joshcollie, on 03/15/2009, -1/+8I know I'll be in the minority I would always use Fireworks over Photoshop for web design work. It's all based one what you're doing and what you know how to use well and for me I fine Fireworks a lot quicker to do web designs.
- indiepenguins, on 03/15/2009, -1/+8Coda is great, I use it on a daily basis. On the other hand, how is Dreamweaver on the list?
- pushmouse, on 03/15/2009, -0/+7The ability to alter the CSS on a production website and see the results in real time without affecting the real code is one reason its a great design tool. Firebug is an incredible time saver in this regard.
- WoollyMittens, on 03/15/2009, -1/+8The programs do nothing. It's the techniques in your head that are the most useful tools you'll ever have.
- mojaam, on 03/15/2009, -0/+6I like Aptana but seeing all the love Firebug is getting, I have got to try it.
- abcgi, on 03/15/2009, -0/+6Agree. I had to rewrite a site my staff produced in DW because it was unmaintainable -> the client was unable to make simple changes to the html directly without the site flipping the f&%$ out: http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=4&p=001755
- souLLy, on 03/15/2009, -3/+9Buried for fireworks, I couldn't name a single designer I know who would ever use it other than to open files supplied to them in fireworks format.
- alpha88, on 03/15/2009, -2/+8This list seems to be for less experienced web designers. With Coda, you don't need Dreamweaver. And I avoid Fireworks like the plague, it's just not as flexible as Photoshop.
But they got Firebug correct, that's a brilliant tool. - abcgi, on 03/15/2009, -0/+5"The programs do nothing" -> your sentiment was probably "The programs are secondary"?
- zoffdino, on 03/15/2009, -6/+11Stay away from Dreamweaver. The people who relies the heaviest on Dreamweaver are also the ones who produce unmaintainable code. I knew it since I inherited one!
- hnilsen, on 03/15/2009, -6/+11Are you kidding? Dreamweaver? Wouldn't even be on my top 20 list.
- strictnein, on 03/15/2009, -1/+5Plenty of people hand code in Dreamweaver. It's bloated, but it still has some nice features.
But I still wish Homesite was updated and available. Oh Allaire, how I miss you. - kr3mliyn, on 03/15/2009, -0/+4I've recently switched to Dreamweaver on Windows because: -
- PSPad tends to crash with syntax highlighting in mixed code documents (think PHP/XHTML and JavaScript)
- NotePad++'s FTP features aren't as good as PSPad's.
On Mac OS X it'll always be Coda or Smultron, Linux Gedit or nano. - DaemonNivas, on 03/15/2009, -2/+6Have fun creating awesome website in Paint and Notepad.
- strictnein, on 03/15/2009, -1/+5It's a great tool, but I'm not sure how it's a Design tool.
- happyhamburgers, on 03/15/2009, -2/+6Title should read "Handy Web Design Tools for n00bs"
- f4tm4n, on 03/15/2009, -0/+3in FF with Firebug installed: console.log('text');
Oh, and console has to be enabled. - phogasmic, on 03/16/2009, -0/+3Dreamweaver over CSSEdit. this list is crap.
- xythian, on 03/15/2009, -1/+4Agreed on all counts with Firebug. I don't want to remember life before it.
- Cl1mh4224rd, on 03/15/2009, -1/+4Uhhh... Fireworks' default format is PNG.
- roxgod666, on 03/15/2009, -2/+4wtf are you talking about? The programs ARE the tools. You use them to extract whatever ideas you have in your head.
- pushmouse, on 03/15/2009, -1/+3There are a lot of people who can do some horrendous work with hammers but I would tell people to stay away from them.
- BridgeBurner, on 03/15/2009, -8/+10Plain text editor owns all of these.
- zeebo, on 03/15/2009, -1/+3As has been discussed previously, basically if you get dreamweaver just to hand code in it, you're paying hundreds of dollars for what a text editor and firebug can essentially give you for free.
- tgc1, on 03/16/2009, -0/+2You know, I think unless you're capable of making a web site with Notepad and MS Paint you don't deserve the title.
- crea8iveart, on 10/01/2009, -0/+2Firebug is an awesome tool man. Thumbs up !

http://www.smashingshare.com/ - andregriffin, on 03/15/2009, -0/+2Not really a web design tool. But even so, Drupal FTW.
- abcgi, on 03/15/2009, -0/+2Like pop-music charts the popular vote has turned up some rubbish?
- checkslash, on 03/15/2009, -1/+3Paint just doesn't cut it though.. you really do need photoshop (or GIMP or Fireworks) to harness that creativity :)
- rd1010, on 03/15/2009, -2/+4oh yeah and fireworks is complete crap
- alien3d, on 03/16/2009, -0/+21. I use dreameaver cs3.
Why i used Dreamweaver cs3
-->Site Manage.Unless you 're one site developer you don't require. If you have mutiply web application it was a must
-->CVS only for cs4.Maybe next project i upgrade to CS4. Real programmer need cvs.
-->Code Editing and templating. You don't just create new design by copy and paste.Wasting of time.
-->External Editor .Notepad++. Either i used dreamweaver to see php bracket or notepad++.Convinient.
-->Site CSS,HTML and browser capibility and some html cleanup .I really like it .I usuualy hard code so sometimes my html
fragment are worst. If there were auto cleanup php in dreamweaver is it heaven enough.Auto completion oop php in appreciate if have.
2.Notepad++.
3.Firebug.A must .Firebug version internet explorer still weird.
** I can code without dreamweaver just source of html firefox can detect bugs.A person just VIM or notepad just a joke and oldfox.
We not creating a database application like old db.Now we create client -server application system.Less store proc to write in vi :) - Charlotte_Web, on 03/16/2009, -0/+2Three Adobe programs, one Mac program, and a Firefox plug-in.
- abcgi, on 03/15/2009, -1/+3Don't use great twice in one sentence :) "it's a great testament to how awesome open source can be." = ahhhh
- k1n6, on 10/13/2009, -0/+1For entry level, or light level work , yes, for serious, "I don't want to ***** sit here all day coding" i can name 50 features that VI (which I know _very_ well), emacs, or notepad.exe don't have. That can save you hours.
- k1n6, on 10/13/2009, -0/+1Don't blame DW for your incompetent staff, and your lack of a company framework for that mater.
- MtheoryX, on 03/16/2009, -0/+1For me, it's more like:
1. Fireworks (initial design)
2. Textmate (backend and structure)
3. CSSEdit (obvious)
4. Firebug (debugging number 3)
5. Coda (maintenance) - h3110, on 03/16/2009, -0/+1Answer: http://digg.com/users/bluenile/history/submissions
Over half of this power users submissions are to sixrevisions.com
Digg has been trying to prevent people from cheating but they do require some evidence. For example, when AppleInsider.com cheated, a lot of their fake accounts were banned (ojames, marchello, neiltc13, and many others). But now they have power user LtGenPanada to submit to digg for them. - Kinsbane, on 03/16/2009, -0/+1Looks like 6R has run out of list ideas.
- k1n6, on 10/13/2009, -0/+1LOL I believe that but I used VIM pretty heavily for many years before switching to eclipse and then DW.
Can't blame the tool for the incomptent user. - chesterjosiah, on 03/16/2009, -0/+1aaaaaaaand it's a great way to stay in shape.
