- hbweb500, on 10/11/2007, -8/+74I laughed at this. Free Download Manager? Google Web Accelerator? Come on. It said Free Download Manager will increase your download speed by 600%. Yeah, right.
- kazimir34, on 10/11/2007, -0/+37All these products cannot compensate the digging-all-day factor.
- olddirtycr, on 10/11/2007, -6/+30hbweb, I use a firefox program that is called "downthemall". It downloads things around 5-6x faster than using the built in firefox download manager. I'd imagine free download manager works the same way. I believe the programs download a file in multiple chunks at the same time, then combine the files in the end.
- hbweb500, on 10/11/2007, -2/+22Well my DSL downloads at around 150 KB/s, max. There is no way to make that faster, even with breaking it up into smaller chunks. You are only allowed so much bandwith, and I don't see how a download manager could help with that.
- frog29, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16Launchy as #1 is Extremely useful.... I never use the start menu anymore
And you can fully customize it! - p0tent1al, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17who cares though.
If you spend that much money on a expensive mac, you can splurge and buy all the expensive software with it. - detrate, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14What a crappy list. This is clearly an attempt by lifehack to try and raise their google rank
- cracker42, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15I thought all the software you'll ever need comes already installed on your Mac. That's what the little dork in the commercial said, right?
- Bob042, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Download managers only help if the server you're getting the file from is the problem. Then it just takes from several servers at once. It won't make you any faster than the max connection speed...
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Unlocker is probably the most useful little utility i use. It does one thing (unlock files that are being used by a process), but can save numerous reboots and can save an awful lot of time
- rauz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Thanks for sharing but I just had to comment on a few of those:
______ Riva Flash-Video Encoder (for youtube)
VLC Player and many other movie players like GOM plays Flash video without converting.
______ AVI Codec Scanner
As above, VLC, GOM and many others eliminate the need for codecs.
______ Free Registry Cleaner:
CCLeaner that was listed in the original article already does this, and more.
______ Units Convertor
Google does this. Just enter, for instance, "11 feet in meters" without the quotation marks and see for yourself.
______ Currency Convertor (Web based)
Same thing, Google for "100 usd in yen" etc. - PueSi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I second Launchy.
It's a royal pain in the ass opening apps when you have a lot installed, Launch makes it so easy and it's such a small program. You'll wonder how could you live without it.
Launch and torrent are my favorite apps in the whole world - olddirtycr, on 10/11/2007, -5/+11digg down sorry
- feverjunk, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9Oh Joy!! Another top 20 from Lifehack. Can't wait for next weeks top 20. Were do for another round of the best firefox extensions.......again.
- bobcrotch, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8Registry 'cleaners' are never, ever ever a good idea. If you're running a registry utility to 'clean' the registry then you probably have no business mucking with it in the first place.
- super_spyder, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4is that launchy program basically a quicksilver for windows?
http://quicksilver.blacktree.com/ - dafragsta, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Is this not trading on the lifehacker.com name a little bit?
- one1plus1one, on 10/11/2007, -5/+8This article reminded me of "Winpatrol" which Leo Laporte used to recommend way-back on Tech-TV. I didn't know that thing was still around -- I just installed the latest version.
Here's a few other free-utilities that might be of interest to some people:
______ AVG Free Root-Kit Scanner

______ paint.net
(Touch up / edit pictures)
http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/Paint-NET/paintnet.html
______ Riva Flash-Video Encoder (for youtube)
First download your favorite youtube videos using www.keepvid.com
Next, you can then watch those videos, or convert them to a different format using the Riva Flash-Video-Encoder.
The Riva program can be obtained free here:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/rivaflv.html
______ AVI Codec Scanner
(This puppy scans a video file, and tells you precisely which codec you need to play it, and even how to get the codec!)
http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/AVIcodec/avicodec.html
______ Free Registry Cleaner:
I've used this on Win-XP-Pro, Win XP-Home, and Win XP-Media-Edition without any problems. But use with it caution. Registry cleaners have the potential to mess up your system. This one has not messed up my system... yet... but anyways, here's the link:
http://www.eusing.com/
______ Units Convertor
(Convert nearly any unit of measurement to another unit)
http://www.snapfiles.com/download/dlconvert.html
______ Currency Convertor (Web based)
http://www.xe.com/ucc/
And finally... if you want to keep up with the latest free software on a daily basis, just visit:
www.snapfiles.com. Their stuff is clean and supposedly tested. (I've never had a problem with anything featured on snapfiles.)
And oh yes... this utility is not free.. but well worth it to back up your DVD's. I can't live without this one:
http://www.1clickdvdcopy.com/index.htm
Once you buy it, you then need to download the "dvd43 decrypter" in order to backup some DVD's. Search for "dvd43 beta news" once you've installed 1clickdvd to find it. Or read the FAQ page at 1clickdvd for more info. - gharding, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I imagine all gained productivity is lost reading LifeHack's dumb lists.
- macgyber, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Na, nothing like quicksilver. I don't think the way windows works is "unified" enough for something like quicksilver to be created for it. There's certain frameworks on OS X that quicksilver can tap directly into that aren't provided to developers in windows.
Quicksilver can do a lot of stuff. All launchy does (funily enough) is launch stuff. (and now web pages too)
But seriously, I wish there was something like it for windows, its THE best productivity app for OS X. - rpong1981, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3This comment is so far down the list I doubt people will read it. However, did anyone notice the image they used of the keyboard was the Logitech g15? I play WoW a lot and those WASD keys are so worn down you can't even see the letters. How did he get his in such pristine condition?
- slapthemonkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Launchy is great.
- Verdanic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I just installed Launchy for about 3 minutes and then found out that it's still not as fast as using the Quick Launch bar positioned at the left of my screen, set to auto-hide. Little known fact that the quick launch can in fact be moved away from the start bar.
http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/7761/dsktoplp0.gif - camstudio, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Dugg up for your impeccable taste ... although I am *slightly* biased ... :)
Always glad to hear people getting good use from CamStudio. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+7*****
- retral, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Couldn't this have been equally as good without calling it a "top 20" list??
- Octanum, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2http://digg.com/software/And_The_Best_Antivirus_Is
AVG is 23rd on that list...
People should do a bit of research instead of naming the virus scanner that they prefer in a top 20 list. - SocialPoison, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Not to mention the best (imo) application on that list is Launchy... which is basically the windows version of Quicksilver.
- arof, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2@frog29 (#6925130)
A much better version of Launchy that I've found, that's faster and more useful is Find and Run Robot (http://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Mouser/findrun/ - webcrumb, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Damn you... I just tried to install AOL Antivirus (the one which is a rebranded free Kaspersky) and despite the protestations of Windows Server 2008 about a driver incompatibility it ended up giving me a boot BSoD. No Safe Mode uninstall, seeing as the Installer service won't run in Safe Mode, and no Last Known Good for some reason. :(
- p0tent1al, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2as a response to the downloading managers; Free Download manager is the best free one, followed by downthemall.
Don't get me wrong, downthemall is a awesome extension to firefox, but it does not have the power that the other ones do.
For example, lets say you want to download about 100 files from a member only site. You need to enter in a login and a password for every file that you download. downthemall doesn't have a place where you can enter this in to blanket all the files with that information.
On a site note, the best download manager (you have to pay for it (or not)) is Reget Deluxe. Better than free download manager, downthemall, all of them. - bowe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1colibri > launchy IMO. It's more like quicksilver. colibri.leetspeak.org I don't use it anymore now that I have vista(where it's pretty much built in) but I used to swear by this thing.
- macgyber, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2About the download speed thing. Some of the sites (most of) that you download stuff from will cap each connection to it. So say you're downloading a file and you have an 8Mbit connection (about 800KB/s) but you only get a 120KB/s from a site that you're downloading a large file from. A download accelerator will start downloading the file in a few pieces at the same time, opening extra connections. Each part will download at 120KB/s taking the full potential of your available bandwidth, 5 connections rather than just the single one that you would have without the accelerator would yield a download speed 5 times faster than without.
- FIip, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"Launchy is the best free program launcher."
I'm gonna have to go with Colibri instead. Sorry. - MikeWanDo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'm sorry but applications on that list are in the wrong order entirely. I mean I use openoffice.org every time I need to write a document (when I don't use notepad) or make a presentation. Or skype to talk to anyone I want to talk to instantly. But hell when was the last time I needed to use something like BK ReplaceEm and replace text strings in multiple documents? It's called Ctrl+R in any application I could imagine needing to replace lines of text in. Copy+pasting those lines every time I need to that is not as bad as installing an application to do it for me. I just don't see the need for that.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Considering this sites usually silliness, don't they mean Top 20 Free Applications to HACK Your Productivity?
- Quadduc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Punctuation.
- spyrochaete, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Almost all these apps increase your computer's productivity, not yours.
I highly recommend CamStudio for recording screencasts though. - UltravioletMars, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Well now! I use most of those things and I still don't get things done. I blame the computer...
- CrucifiedEgo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Mike: you must not do much scripting. I can't tell you how many times rpl has made my life really easy. Imagine, for a moment, you're changing your mysql server to a new host, and you need to update all your config files, but this is a virtual host with 50 client domains on it. Easy!
locate .php | xargs rpl 172.1.2.3 192.168.2.10
And your clients are none the wiser. - ckdavid, on 02/23/2008, -0/+1I do not recommend the free software. How do they make money by free software. Is there a free lunch?
CK http://computercleanup.wordpress.com - rauz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3For those of you refusing to believe DTA or download accelerators in general can increase speeds here is a screenshot - DTA to the left and regular Firefox to the right.
Downloading one file at the time, first from Gametrailers.com and then from Revision3.com and as you can see I let the download run for a while so as to make sure it got some momentum ;)
Still not utilizing all of my bandwidth but it's something and it points clearly to a huge speed increase.
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i90/rauz/dta_compare.png - twtmc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Ad Aware is one of the worst programs out there. It slows your computer down like ***** and makes it run very poorly.
- handeyman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I like the freeware list over at http://www.techtakeover.com/downloads.htm
- DeepFreezed, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1thanks a lot for posting this. I got like 4 tools that I wasn't using before.
- rauz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@esotericguy, not sure what you mean - those are the exact same files...look again.
- BalooUrsidae, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1buried as inaccurate. A productivity suite is an application, programs provide what's needed to accomplish that application. Programs are not applications.
- Tripcast, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1My favorite productivity tool - http://basket.kde.org/
