- wisedude, on 10/10/2007, -34/+214Tip 1: Uninstall (someone had to say it....)
Disclaimer: I do run vista on my own PC, and find it quite enjoyable. However you do have to poke fun every once in a while, right? - 0260, on 10/10/2007, -8/+70vista works fast for me already. good tips though. all the people saying to install xp are the same people that said that about 98. you cant stop progress
- smurf22, on 10/10/2007, -13/+55Turn off system restore... great tip!
/sarcasm - Predater, on 10/10/2007, -11/+52Turn off UAC??? That's like asking a linux user to use the root account for everyday work!
- rr525356, on 10/10/2007, -7/+45Turning off auto disk defrag is going to kill performance in the long run. Hardly anyone defrags once a week.
- Predater, on 10/10/2007, -3/+33Vista doesn't require a 'DirectX 10' capable GPU, you dummy... I am able to use it's 3D "functionality" on intel 945 chipset just fine.
- andregriffin, on 10/10/2007, -2/+30Why don't you just throw a "What's Vista?" in there while you're at it you troll.
- spudnic, on 10/10/2007, -5/+26tip11: Play browser based games instead of dx10 beauties.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+23You don't have to defrag once a week. Even once a month is probably overkill for most people.
- newbill123, on 10/10/2007, -2/+23Turn off Windows Search indexing -- isn't this only problematic when you first install Windows or hook up a new drive. It seems like search is a pretty big feature to give up. Couldn't you just let the machine index overnight or something?
Turning off automatic Windows Defender operation, UAC, and System Restore seem outright dangerous for what I'd expect the speed benefit to be. Are the speed increases really significant? - johnny222, on 10/10/2007, -8/+26By the way, one should NEVER turn of system restore.
- MioTheGreat, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20Actually, if you understood either OS, even from a superficial standpoint, you'd realize that that it is, in fact, the exact same thing.
UAC does not "Question every move" It merely detects actions that would otherwise be prevented from being executed as a "Limitted User" (And then some, it does some clever file system/registry virtualization tricks that are obviously far beyond your comprehension) and simply allows you to execute them instead of flat out denying them, or demanding you to have typed 'sudo' in advance. - mrinternet, on 10/10/2007, -6/+24geez, tough crowd !!
dugg (anything on tweaking vista is a starter for 10).
come on SP1 come on SP1.. - kronix2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17"Add a 2GB or higher USB Flash drive to take advantage of Windows Ready Boost"
"The Ready Boost system can significantly improve system performance."
Yeah, if you have 512mb of RAM. Step up to 1gb or 2gb, and there's no impact on performance.
Some of the services it suggest you disable are already set to run manually. - venom8599, on 10/10/2007, -3/+19Oh, please. UAC tackles the same exact issue that 'sudo' does in Linux. The differences just stem from the underlying differences in how user accounts have been handled on each OS.
- Jugalator, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16Yeah, but Windows does it when you don't use the computer, and it probably remembers it better than you do anyway. :-p
- MioTheGreat, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17Congradulations. You've just killed Shadow Volume Copies (Previous Versions), and the single best defense Vista has against unwanted changes.
- davidhildreth, on 10/10/2007, -8/+22it's the first thing i turn off on a new install
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17After less than a year, about as many who use OSX, and more than use Linux. So, yes.
- Jugalator, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14I don't agree with #4 since it should normally run when you don't use the computer, i.e. an appropriate time when you can manually defrag anyway. And as long as you use FAT32 or NTFS, it can be a good idea to defrag every once in a while. By either doing it yourself, or letting Windows do it.
I also don't quite agree with #6 since it doesn't "consume resources" and only writes RAM to disk the moment you actually hibernate. It does not do mysterious stuff at other times, or eats RAM.
I also don't agree with #7 since it can be vital to restore a faulty system after e.g. a driver or software install that goes crazy. The key thing to remember is that it does *not* have to be a user fault making you need this. But sure, Vista sometimes writes to that file, about 1-2 times per day as it makes so many daily restore points.
I don't agree with #8 since disabling UAC does not increase performance, but may make it less annoying to use. But that's a security / convenience thing you have to decide for yourself, nothing that should be on this list.
The rest looks good to me!
I'd like to add disabling the SuperFetch service since it doesn't seem to be all that accurate in predicting your usage behavior, and always cause quite a bit of hard drive access. It runs in background priority, but is still annoying for me, and my hard drive. :-p - Giga, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15I'm curious where you found this 126MB stick of RAM...
- futureisours, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15"This operation requires administrator permission." NOOOO! Foiled again! Wait, I am the administrator of this computer!!
- Battlecry, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13System Restore saved my butt the other day. It was a last ditch effort to fix my computer. I couldn't believe it actually worked for once.
- zyklon, on 10/10/2007, -39/+52Best Vista speed trick: Reinstall Windows XP Pro.
- Kyderdog, on 10/10/2007, -17/+29>Tip 2. Install Linux
Yeah Like thats better than installing Vista - Trax91, on 10/10/2007, -6/+181gb of RAM? I'm using only 638MB (512+126) and Vista Ultimate is running quite smooth on my Intel Celeron 1.8Ghz with Radeon 9600(Dx9)..
- Jugalator, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11AFAIK, #2 being the culprit in some copy operations was fixed in the recent performance hotfix. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938979 ... Also, get this one... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938194 ... And if you play games, this one... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940105 ... And, if you use SLI in recent or future DirectX 10 compatible games, this one... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936710/
- Jugalator, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14One more thing, it really is true however that many do like you, and I have lost count of how many I've tried helping on forums when something is really bad, and they've disabled System Restore. When I ask why they tell something like "to save 10 GB on my 250 GB drive". I can then only leave the thread because I have no idea of the state of his/her system or whatever that person exactly did. System Restore has to be among the most underestimated features in XP / Vista, and it usually works to 100% in solving a vast amount of "weirdness" with almost no impact to the system afterwards. It's for once a MS idea that seemed to come out well.
- remakeru, on 10/10/2007, -7/+18People please stop with the reinstall xp crap... I've been using xp for a long long time and recently moved to Vista all that I can say is that Vista is just great both as in feautures and performance even in a not so powerfull computer. It's evolution. Get over it!
- DreamVsPs2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12some of those don't make sense and the instructions are wrong.
- chedabob, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10You can't uninstall any operating system any other way.
- Scruffydan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9here you go
http://winhowto.blogspot.com/2007/03/how-to-change-power-button-in-vista-to.html - Gizza, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Do all these people who complain about the UAC not use Vista, or are they just tweak crazy maniacs?
The only time I get prompted is Installing/Uninstalling programs and deleting/moving system files or folders. And I do that less than once a week, perhaps less than once a month. - wageslaven, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_games_with_DirectX_10_support
There ya go, Jackass. - Demagogue, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10I don't know what you're problem is, my machine runs so much faster with Vista....
- Jugalator, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10It not only protects against user errors, but also driver and other software installs going haywire that's beyond your control. It writes to the restore files about 1-2 times per day. I really don't see the problem.
- greatcaffeine, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Yes. Believe it or not, it really is better than XP. It's far from being perfect or revolutionary, but that doesn't mean it's worse than its predecessor.
- MioTheGreat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Oh please, go put on your tin foil hat -- but be sure that the tin foil manufacturers didn't embed an RFID chip in the tin foil first.
- toxicityj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8thank you for contributing to the vast amount of ignorant tools commenting on an operating system they've never used. Congrats to you for absorbing ignorance from mac users, mac commercials, XP elitists, and idiots who don't know how to turn UAC off and distributing your absorbed ignorance to the whole world.
- ronin2040, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10you mean you were too lazy to LOOK for the drivers for XP? I find it hard to believe theres actually a situation where theres hardware with MORE drivers for vista than XP.
- Jugalator, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8The DRM services are only in use when playing back DRM protected content, not games, video you got from The Pirate Bay, or whatever. That's a fairly common misconception. All media do not pass through some "ineffecient" protected audio/video path if it doesn't need to.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Aww.. i thought you cut off 2MB from the sides.
- Giga, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10A new window manager and better memory management compared to old window manager and the same old memory management does sound like progress. Whether it is progressing at an acceptable rate is another matter.
- Ryan121, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Thankfully my vista laptop runs fast enough that I don't need to disable nearly every useful feature in Vista.
- maci01, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Anyone know how I can change that big dumb Power Button in the startup menu to shut down the computer? That would probably be the best tip for Vista..
- Bricks, on 10/10/2007, -0/+61) Look at the website. Half of his site = articles on cracking software, and his incoming searches are for ***** like "hack atm." Its a pretty shady site.
2) That was a pretty good burn actually. Popup books. heh - antdude, on 10/10/2007, -8/+14How does one uninstall Windows? [grin]
- jhaks, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6@ DesuKN
This is completely wrong. Even admin users in Vista have limited user privilege. The only different between admin and normal user is that admins don't need to type a password. All the protection of UAC is still there. UAC elevates privilege through a protected screen that prevents spoofing. So it isn't just asking you to confirm something it actually is the gate keeper and elevates processes only when you allow them to. - andregriffin, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9I bet you only read pop-up books.
- Illl, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10I am wary to type any comment because I know the Linux fanboys are looking for blood, but here it goes. I have run many different distros of Linux (Slackware, Suse, Ubuntu). My experiences with these distros overall has been okay, but it doesn't matter which you use, you had better be willing to pour over man pages and forums for hours to get your system to do what you want it to. I know some of you are thinking that I am over-exaggerating, but I have yet to have EVERYTHING work right out of the box (I am talking about more than installing a driver). The real issue here always comes down to usability for the average user. I don't dislike Linux, but let's face the facts. As a whole, it is not ready for average mom and pop user. It could be argued that is because this is a "Window's-fed" generation, but that is where we are. I like to game. I like to game in native environments where I don't have to use WINE or Cadega or whatever else the heck it takes to make the game work. If all I care to do is browse the internet, do some word processing, and pretend (90 percent of Linux users do this) I am a "l33t h4x0r", then I can stick with Linux.
I built a beast of a machine back in February. The only thing that Vista Ultimate leaves me disappointed in is the drop in frame rate of most games. Granted the frame rate isn't horrible, but it was higher running XP. A new OS that makes games play worse than its predecessor makes one wonder if it is worth it. -
