- mobilehavoc, on 10/10/2007, -9/+31Wow, Lifehacker is complete blogspam these days. These are all lame tips that even my parents who know nothing about computers already know and do. I also doubt people who don't know any of these things would be reading Lifehacker.
- ahhell, on 10/10/2007, -3/+24This made the front page? Seriously, how many damn sockpuppets does lifehacker have on digg?
- Crosshare, on 10/10/2007, -0/+155. Visualize and Reduce Disk Usage
Red = .avi
Holy crap Lifehacker has a lot of porn! - unknamed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Ctrl+Shift+Esc is just a tad faster
- t1m0j5, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15My dog is smarter than this post
- evi1, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14I hear the best way to clean up your PC is to go into command line and type "format C:".
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14Ctrl+Alt+Del. End process, end process, end process...
- scottique, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Does it seem counter-intuitive that their article on cleaning up computers instructs the reader to install half a dozen apps?
- ivand67, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12First of all - I have nothing to do with lifehacker, but I do read it from time to time. There's nothing wrong with that blog post. Sure, it's simplistic - but maybe they want more novice computer users to visit their site as well, ever think of that?! And there's nothing wrong with having this story on Digg either.
- JCSaint, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8No, what's retarded is thinking that because it's #1 they mean do it first when they say it's a last resort option.
"#1: When all else fails, the ultimate PC cleanup is formatting your hard drive and reinstalling Windows from scratch."
It's #1 because it's guaranteed to fix whatever is wrong. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -7/+14It's retarded: they recommend formating and reinstalling Windows as their number one maintenance step. That's like buying a new car instead of washing and vacuuming it.
- Anim8ir, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5The post should be titled, "Top Ten things you already know about cleaning your computer"
HOW, is this on the front page? - Nerfatron, on 10/10/2007, -1/+611. Use CCleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/
- Juicey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Buried. CCleaner.
- wattznext, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5While this list is decent (not everything is going to be some new amazing technique, sometimes a list of reminders is a good thing), it is definitely blogspam. Why do i have to click through 3 pages just to get to the tip itself?
- jtizzle, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Please. The correct method (which removes the user prompt, and includes output redirection) is:
C:> echo y | format c: /q /s /v:foo > nul
Thank you. - purpmint008, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4You guys ever heard of DeepFreeze and drive imaging?
Works like a charm.
P.S. This article is mostly crap that people already know. - frazw, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4@ superllama
It's a clever system though. It makes your windows install gradually decline in performance at a rate most people don't notice until eventually it seems that your computer is really slow compared to that shiny new one on the shelf in the shop. It is probably responsible for a lot of computer upgrades, replacements and windows upgrades. I know it works on my dad. I spent months trying to talk him out of buying a new pc he didn't need saying I would sort his old one next time I visited. He got impatient bought his new computer. I went over to set it up and in the process wiped and reinstalled his old one for my sister to have and he was surprised how fast it booted.
I think he just had the inescapable feeling that it must be the fault of slow hardware and not a slow OS.
@zybch
It isn't sad its useful, they provide income for hardware manufacturers to innovate and the provide a bit of a smokescreen between me and a hacker by being an easier target. - MrStylz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Why would that be number 11 when it's already in the 10 reasons listed?
- o0matt0o, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4***** lame
- andyd273, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2ooo, and it doesn't bring up the silly windows security thing first. yay!
- superllama, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3This is exactly what I've been saying about Vista.
It's some kind of deal between hardware manufacturers and Microsoft.
Seriously, the majority of computer users do nothing more than read/write email, write documents, and surf the web.
So why the hell do you need a recommended amount of 1GB RAM in order to do so? - freedomorfire, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2bury this bugger
- Feanor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Wait...you don't buy a new car when yours gets dirty?
- specialK16, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Hahaha
- andyd273, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2So for all the people saying that this list is crap, what solutions do you use when cleaning up a PC that has had a few non technical people playing around with it attracting junk?
Also, for those saying that a format + reinstall is the best thing, what do you do if you don't want to loose all of your documents, settings, game saves, and other important stuff that accumulates over time?
It's useless to say something is crap if you don't offer a better solution. And at least everything on this list is free. - BufordT, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21. Wipe Your Hard Drive and Reinstall Windows
They could have left out #2 thru 10. - FastZ, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3So this is a list of 10 things you can do to help out your Windows machine, however there are no instructions showing how to actually perform these tasks... To me, this seems a little pointless.
- bdbr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The sad thing about Windows is that even with all the "cleaner" apps, there is nothing that really cleans it even close to a refomat+install. Its a pain, but the performance gain on a ~2-yo install is usually amazing.
This article isn't very good for noobs because it doesn't explain the rationale for most of its recommendations, and it isn't any use for veterans because we already know this stuff. Pretty lame, really. - specialK16, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Somehow I was reminded of that futurama episode where Fry, Lila and Bender went to this anti-human robot planet. When they were caught, the "judging" machine freezes, people begin to talk, and on the voices you can hear says "Press control alt supreme!"
- Lochie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah what's the point of cleaning everything up and THEN formatting.
- Mac101, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4Crtl + Alt + Chicken. Thats my 2 cents for the day.
- hollismb, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Damnit, this article reminded me that I keep forgetting that I used MSCONFIG to turn all that startup crap on to fix a problem, but haven't turned it back off.
- inactive, on 05/16/2009, -0/+1Or, use the free recovery disk that you probably got...
- frazw, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I always go with a reinstall. Nothing works as well. The only problem with that is backing up data but if you use a dual partition scheme it isn't so bad.
Next most useful thing is controlling startup with msconfig.
Both much more annoying on my dad's PC though his systray is always rammed and his data scattered everywhere. - jedikv, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Haterboy much?
- getrealnow, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2When I was a senior, we used DeepFreeze on the Teachers computers so they wouldn't ***** break them every time they used it. Every time the computer boots up, the windows we had on it is still there. All teachers and students saved there information on a network hardrive.
- jedikv, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Fedora is not exactly user friendly - even with pretty KDE or Compiz
- binorgog, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1Norton Utilities FTW!
- rocko_stazetti, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The best and easiest way to find and delete duplicate files is with Easy Duplicate Finder.
- bbtrev, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1At least they didn't say "Defrag every month"!
- inactive, on 05/16/2009, -0/+1Delete System32.
Duh - ogre2112, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1And neither of which will work from Windows unless your boot drive is D: or higher.
- OBKenobi, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I can't decide which site is more useless, Colo(u)rlovers or Lifehacker?
- robfis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0agreed!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Webroot Window Washer....run it at start up to delete ALL temp files, IE files, internet history and it blanks out the index.dat file
Registry First Aid....run once a week to keep your registry files in order (the smaller your registry file the quicker Windows boots)
AVG Virus protection....It's FREE
This is ALL you need to keep your PC clean and anonymous..... - kingvik, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15) ?????
6) Profit - superllama, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3This is the sad thing about Windows.
If you aren't careful while installing programs, and you aren't a very organized person when it comes to your PC,
The result is having to wipe your hard-drive and reinstall the OS every couple of months, as it gets clogged up with adware, and programs (that you aren't even aware of what their use is) starting up automatically. - simplexity06, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0HAHA I must have done this at least twice this summer for my laptop.
- htnguyen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0there are so many other things. i wish that 'Black Viper' site was still up for tweaking performance options in WinXP (down the nitty and gritty such as disabling unneeded services)
