- Kido1986, on 10/10/2007, -3/+39Am I the only one who finds GMail basic web interface damn near perfect and don't find the need for plugins for it (other than the one to make sure it logs in https every time)?
- Hale, on 10/10/2007, -11/+38"For its integrity, features and functionality, GMail is the leading webmail application worldwide. For the same reasons, Firefox tends to be the most used browser out there."
I hate to break it to you, but Firefox is not the most used browser "out there" unless by "out there" you meant "by nerds". Or maybe "by nerds and family members of nerds." ;)
It's ok if that's what was meant, those are the people reading this list, but I'd hate to see this list lose credibility because of an inaccuracy in the in the first two lines. Perhaps a better intro would be "For its integrity, features and functionality, GMail could be considered the leading webmail application worldwide. Firefox has grown increasingly popular much for the same reasons." It may not be as catchy, but it contains more truth.
I had never even thought to use slashes in Label names to make them appear as subfolders. Even without the Greasemoney script, the subfolder naming scheme makes the Labels list appear more organized. Kudos! - brieslice, on 10/10/2007, -0/+24Very detailed list. I wonder though why Lifehacker's "better gmail" extension isn't there as well...
- takamalak, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22Blocking ads is a victimless crime; like punching someone in the dark.
- vdxc, on 09/29/2008, -1/+12Because Better Gmail includes most of these add-ons. Personally, I love Better Gmail.
- Disillusion, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11You know how I can tell it's time for the top 10 gmail tweaks? Because it's Wednesday.
- Kanaka, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11Cant remember the last time i visited the actual Gmail site. POP3 downloading ftw.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8You're joking?
- iashraf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Are you in the UK? Google lost the use of the name GMail in the UK to some other company who held the trademark so they changed their branding of the service to GoogleMail, and the email address for any UK Googlemail user is @googlemail.com, and not gmail.com
- futureb, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I use my own personal browser. I just built it this morning. I'll probably build a new one next week (or at least a new version: My personal browser 3.0.5). That's how incredibly ***** NON mainstream I am.
- szembek, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8What's the point of using gmail then?
- Tippis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Google et.al. works just fine with my Opera O_o
- hadlaat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6All these features and some more are available with the "Better GMail" extension.
It packs many GreaseMonkey based enhancements into a single independent extension. It works even if you don't have GreaseMonkey, making it superb for "simple" users who do not use the Monkey. - Guard, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Firefox is the most used browser out there amongst those who realize you can choose your browser at least.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5My address was made in the UK as googlemail.com however if people send it to gmail.com it still works.
- Dochtuir, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4change your lanugage to US. When mine was on UK, some features were missing also
- missingnoh4x, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I don't use any browser at all. I just form an http request to sites, and the raw html source shows up in my terminal, which I then interpret by hand. That's non mainstream.
- burke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Google has no way of telling if you're using a Greasemonkey script to hide ads.
- sdaupleix, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Better GMail (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4866) and FEBE (http://customsoftwareconsult.com/extensions/febe/febe.html)
OR Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition (http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable). - ChillyWilly5280, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Because gmail sticks with you when you change ISP. Because Yahoo and Hotmail charge for POP access. Because if you have a slow connection you can keep working while your mail application works in the background.
- Kavok, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4How do you use https every time?
- ultrafez, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Go to https://mail.google.com instead of http://mail.google.com
Your whole Gmail session will run through https insetad of http! - VeganG, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Not that I think it'll happen, but the TOS specifically prohibits altering Gmail. I know I really wouldn't want to someday find my account gone, there's A LOT of stuff in there.

- theholycow, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Ah, that leads into a nice piece of language:
"Firefox is the most chosen browser..." - littleodie914, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Thanks for turning a nice, helpful GMail article into a browser war.
- jvanderveen, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3feature i'd like to see: send email later (like, send this email at 9am today). i think thunderbird has something like this, but not gmail, as far as i know.
plus, the drag-and-drop attachments works great. - godfly, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2hey thanks!
- unrealmp3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I want IMAP support for Gmail :(
- jax1492, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The whole reason i use gmail is because its simple, why would i want to change it?
- Flipperbw, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Conditions are perfect...
- mrgreen4242, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Why would you want folders? The label system is 10x better, if you use it right. Just archive off messages once you've labeled them if you don't want to look at them.
- radiometric, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1or torpark
It's portable firefox routed through Tor. - easybakelovin, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3That really threw me as well. I wish it was true that Firefox was the most used browser, but sadly IE dominates.
but don't take my word for it, see for yourself http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp - jamesvaughn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I find none of these worthwhile.
- MavRevMatt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Still 30%...
- theblacknight, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1If you forward it or a copy you can read it there, and if you set up that e-mail address with gmail it will send e-mail from there as well.
- godfly, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1is there a way to store my firefox personal settings for gmail (etc) into a USB key so i can have the same settings if im using a different machine?
- chlorinekid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I noticed that there are some trademark disputes in uk germany and poland which is why it's google mail instead of gmail
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gmail#Registration - mrgreen4242, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I think they meant leading in terms of features and usability, not overall user count.
- chukd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1this is similar to a posting about a week ago.
- GawtMilk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Internet Explorer is for businessmen
Safari is for Yuppies
FireFox is for nerds
Opera is for nerds living with their parents
Netscape Navigator is for grandmothers - dxgg, on 02/05/2008, -0/+1If you're running Firefox, just go here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4866
- ultrafez, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I live in the UK, and I signed up for Gmail before it changed to Google Mail, and I got an @gmail.com address which I still use now. However the logo has changed to the Google Mail logo even though my language is set to English (US)... strange but true!
- flyzipper, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This correction isn't meant to take away from the overall quality of the writeup, but GMail isn't anywhere near the leading webmail application.
Even Google claims they're 4th.
One source of information ...
http://www.email-marketing-reports.com/metrics/email-statistics.htm - davdav, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You can directly poll your POP and have it imported into your Gmail, no forwarding necessary. To answer your question: yes.
- chlorinekid, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2question:
why do some people see a "GMail" image in the top left corner of their screens when using Gmail and yet I see "Google Mail"?? Is there some sort of difference? I noticed the the article linked to an image of the default logo but mine dont look like that :/
This is before installing the any of the greesemonkey scripts... - chadtatro, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1my fav: the gNipple tweak
- theholycow, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You took the words right out of my mouth.
Better wash those hands. - alexdemers, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Personally, I like the "Different and Bigger attachments icon" in your inbox. Instead of seeing the paperclip, you see the actual file extension:
