- Elranzer, on 11/06/2007, -2/+47Too bad DVD Shrink (and DVD Decrypter) are both officially illegal, and haven't seen an update to their program since around 2005, when they were forced to take down these programs.
- corbanbrook, on 11/06/2007, -0/+37I dont know how they missed SUPER or ffmpegX.
- Miche1987, on 11/07/2007, -0/+34It also resurrects the dead.
- Avocadoes, on 11/06/2007, -1/+33I was first expecting to see a list with aXXo on top.
- gurujerry, on 11/02/2007, -0/+29Virtualdub needs to be on this list
- TheJas, on 11/01/2007, -2/+30Handbrake changed my life and caused me to buy an ipod touch.
- oldhick, on 11/01/2007, -0/+24Still haven't needed an update for either.
- madeinbrazil, on 11/01/2007, -0/+18VLC, Mediacoder, Avi2DVD, Videora, Any Video Converter, Hey!Watch, VidDownloader, iSquint, DVD Shrink, Handbrake. More info, read the great article.
SUPER isn't on the list? Its a pretty good program for me although finding the actual download link is terrible. - Negyxo, on 11/02/2007, -0/+17The best converting tool i've ever found is SUPER. It's got a really ***** website, but the tool itself is great. It can convert anything to anything...and pretty quickly too. http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html
- inactive, on 11/01/2007, -0/+13Illegal in your country, not mine.
- kingkilr, on 11/04/2007, -0/+12True, the article fails to mention that VLC has a built in transcoder which can transcode damn near anything, to any format with a myriad of settings.
- Negyxo, on 11/05/2007, -0/+11the freaking download link looks like a google ad or something... such a terrible site for such good software.
- Cornrider, on 11/01/2007, -0/+10I rip DVDs with scissors but a machete also works great!
- inactive, on 11/01/2007, -0/+10i still use gordian knot for most of my video encodings, i have yet to find a tool that is as flexible and kick ass for encoding my .avi's
- pendrachken, on 11/01/2007, -0/+9ummmm, yeah, how about #1: Mencoder? runs on windows, linux, osX, ( probably on the BSD's too)
- PRlME, on 11/01/2007, -0/+8It also fixes corrupted video files
- markperia, on 11/01/2007, -0/+8They should really revise their website.
- PolarZoe, on 11/01/2007, -2/+8Buried for not putting Mencoder on the list.
- cawpin, on 11/01/2007, -0/+6Take a look at Rip4Me. It integrates with DVD Decryptor and DVD Shrink and will handle all the stuff that DVD Shrink by itself won't. I haven't found anything it can't handle yet.
- jxfallout, on 11/01/2007, -0/+6http://www.zamzar.com/
Just started using the site above a month or so ago, and have not looked back. Easily the best conversion (video, audio, etc...) site in existence (and yes, it can rip and convert Youtube, Google, etc... videos)! - fani, on 11/04/2007, -1/+7Agreed. But it has problems though. Annoyances are seen when FF'ing videos. Lot of crappy artifacting and other wierdness.
All in all, a good program though.
Another good alternative player is zplayer ( Zoom player ). Also plays almost everything and is very good. I use this over VLC now. - joshuaer, on 11/01/2007, -0/+6what about Mac The Ripper!
- chrismgtis, on 11/01/2007, -1/+6So I guess if I got you a brand new car and purchased you a lifetime supply of gasoline, it still isn't free and you still wouldn't be satisfied, because you are still paying taxes on public roads and highways. *Shakes head*. You Linux guys don't make a whole lot of sense most of the time.
- madvulcan, on 11/01/2007, -0/+5I can't believe mplayer/mencoder is not in the list. mplayer can play any format I can think of, mencoder can encode and convert (combined with mplayer) to lots of format with lots of options (although it's sometime necessary to have external library like xvidcore to encode to that codec). And it's available to any platform since it's opensource. ffmpeg is also great converter (also open source). Seems that the list is more Windows oriented.
- fani, on 11/01/2007, -0/+5SUPER, ffmpegX, DVD43, DVD Shrink, handbrake, zplayer, vlc are pretty much all I use.
- 0260, on 11/01/2007, -0/+4i use http://www.pocketdivxencoder.net/ too its great
- GRTWHT, on 10/31/2007, -0/+4Been using MediaCoder for a couple of years now and still love it - simple enough to be easy to work with, detailed and complex enough (if you so choose) to tweak any setting any way you want.
With that said, if they don't stop the 'automatically open a web browser to check the updates status crap' every time I open the program, I'll have to move on to something else! - silfiriel, on 11/01/2007, -0/+4no, the article says it doesn't have a transcoder, not fails to mention. it misinforms.
- davidhildreth, on 11/01/2007, -0/+4Super is sort of buggy.
I'm not sure how the could not list VirtualDub, it has a bit of a learning curve but is much more powerful than the ones listed. - WiseWeasel, on 11/01/2007, -0/+4I'll second that. Handbrake is freaking awesome, and I'm using it to rip all my DVDs to H.264 format for playback on the AppleTV over the network. No more digging through books of shiny discs for me!
- WiseWeasel, on 11/01/2007, -0/+4Glad someone noticed! : P MacTheRipper rules all!
- chrismgtis, on 11/02/2007, -1/+4I've been using a video player lately called GOMplayer, because it is the best FLV player that I have found and I didn't have to download any codecs to make it work. All FLV players that I've tried have lots of issues, mainly that you can't resize/maximize the window. GOMplayer is an all around good piece of software, although I only use it for FLV files (downloaded YouTube videos/etc). Now if I can just find a really great FLV to AVI converter! The one most people talk about is pure crap.
Other Software I use:
PowerDVD
AutoGK
WinAVI
VLC Player
DVD Shrink
CloneCD
Nero - MikeOSX, on 11/01/2007, -0/+3try MPEG Streamclip. http://www.squared5.com
- antitab, on 11/05/2007, -0/+3"VLC is a media player, not converter"
Totally false. Click that little "Streaming/Export Wizard" button. It's limited in GUI options, but it has the full gamut of FFMPEG codecs available to export.
That said, MeGUI is really the only GUI transcoder that exposes all of x264, FFMPEG, and Xvid's innards in a friendly fashion. Auto-update is also great when you're dealing with codecs that are always improving in big ways. AviSynth, VirtualDub, and MeGUI are the sole reasons for my Windows VMWare image, because there is simply nothing comparable available for Mac on the GUI (MacPorts does have mencoder and ffmpeg, fortunately). This will be changing soon, however... - evildeadguy, on 11/02/2007, -0/+3Hows 8th grade treating you?
- moggygetro, on 11/01/2007, -0/+3I prefer Mplayer.
- BryanJK, on 11/04/2007, -0/+3Why is it bad? It just means it can play anything you download without having to get tons of installers for Codecs.
- inactive, on 11/02/2007, -0/+3***** like yourself give sane linux users a bad name.
- tropican8, on 11/05/2007, -0/+2Super used to use outdated versions of almost all the tools it provides a frontend for (and didn't uninstall them on exit.) Don't know if that's still the case.
- dkla, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2Ahem... what about DVD Flick? It's a great program, very versatile and powerful, easy UI, and it's open source (i.e., free).
Check it out. (http://www.dvdflick.net) - cdmarcus, on 11/01/2007, -1/+31) stfu with your "Loseblows" and "Macintoss" crap... it's stupid, and just gives us Linux users a bad name.
2) Try AcidRip - riomx, on 11/06/2007, -0/+2VLC will play DVDs from any region in Windows. Highly useful for when I get DVDs from England and can't find a standalone player to play them on, or don't want to mess with firmware on a DVD-ROM
- electroze, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2Anyone who diggs this is a hacker. RIAA will harvest all of our names and will pwn us.
- nullx42, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2Also, some of the formats are not fully supported. isnt VLC technically still in beta?
- BryanJK, on 11/05/2007, -1/+3are you watching 20 hour movies or what? My tracking works perfectly :3
- timjim31, on 11/05/2007, -0/+2Its digg I'm guessing alot
- sonicjosh, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2I use AnyDVD and Nero Record to get my dvd's into mp4's
- inactive, on 11/05/2007, -0/+2VLC will play my recycling bin
- prisoner24601, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2Is there any way to install ONLY the DVD codec that VLC uses into WMP? I've played around with VLC and it is very nice, but I don't need two media players and WMP does everything I need except for DVD playback. I'd like to get WMP to handle DVD's instead of having a second player for them. Obviously I'm looking for a solution other than the commercial codec packages like Roxio, etc.
- Bilabrin, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2Have no fear.
