Why would it matter which type of connection you have? Regardless, all that is being measured is the time to transfer a certain abount of data one way and another.
How can something advertise itself as "the most accurate", when there is no real accurate way to measure your bandwidth? There are many factors that affect it. As someone mentioned earlier, the closest way to test your speed is to download a file from one of your ISP's servers. I called RCN and doubted their speed claims so they gave me a link to a large zip file located on one of their servers. The speed was close to what they said I should be getting, but that doesn't bear any reflection of the actual transfer speeds to the rest of the internet beyond their own servers (which sucked and is the reason I don't have them anymore). - jeffsiler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I prever this http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest
jeff - anymir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I ***** hate you comcast! I'm paying 40 bucks a month for "high speed internet" and all I get is 1.3 mbps. (and I've tried other tests, this is definitely my speed.
- Devin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is not news. If you want a broadband speed test, googling for it will turn up many options.
- nathanstarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't have Comcast.....
- Bluezdood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What the crap! Comcast is supposed to be 6mbps d/l, all I get is a paltry 4.5 on a good day! Comcast you worthless piece of crap! A curse on you and your offspring! On a happier note, isn't Vanessa Marcil hot? Woooo!
- mutant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What evidence is there that this is "the most accurate"? nothing.
/hype - PCGUY112887, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why in the heck was this dugg to the top?
And the page being in .asp woulden't make anything crash, it works fine here. - ccanni1028, on 10/12/2007, -0/+05487 down, 4577 up
Kind of close to what I am getting for downloads- I am on a multiple-T3 college network. - modeps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The only true way to test the speed of your Internet connection is to upload/download a file from a 1-2 hop server on your own ISP's network, any other test is purely speculative.
- maaddmax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cant be accurate. I work at an ISP and I know my speeds are x20 the results this gives.
- Twelve-60, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0haha... server busy, dugg to death :)
- Smokezz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Doesn't crash my Firefox...
And what the hell does writing a page in ASP have to do with crashing Firefox? Cluelessness... - foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and, to whomever is so fond of internetfrog, internetfrog said my upload speed was 17,846,856 bps. wow! freakin' 17mbps! *pfft* i wish.
- sandmanx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+01.3/1.5 up/down on my T1. Much better than any other tests I've seen.
- kingfoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Server is busy, thanks!
- rapidisimo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Server is busy...
- dhughes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 Oops. We broke it. :P
- Albertpacino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I got 4416kbps witn my 5mb line, very close.
- balazs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Server is busy!!!
I want to try and test out my 2 Mbps connection (I know, I know but I live in the UK where we cant get 4+ Mbps, or if we can it is evry rare) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just crashed my Firefox
- thatedeguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been particularly fond of http://www.internetfrog.com for a while now.

http://www.distroofthemonth.com - imtigger2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Damn... testing at Pepperdine University and I'm getting 16Mbps down and 6.4Mbps up (went off their speedometer, so did my test at dslreports.com) Sweet!
- foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is stupid. the only thing this article is good for is experiencing the digg effect. the only way a speed test can be more accurate is to test longer. the one thing this server has going for it is that it limits users (which could also be a bad thing if their servers suck and they know it, which is why they limit the number of users).
- KriLL3.2™, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Site is dugg deep... Doesn't work.
And speed to your ISP's servers aren't the main bottleneck. It's your ISP's connection to other ISPs that's the main bottleneck in these kinds of tests. - KriLL3.2™, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BTW anyone knows a better site? Possibly using only XHTML/WAP? wanna check the connection on my UTPS (3G) phone/bluetooth modem :)
- foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol dhughes
- tempusrob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+06403 kbps download (T2 equivalent) ... not to shabby for residential cable internet (Optimum Online).
- imtigger2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"This sux! I have Dsl 768kbps [ackage, adn the test gives me 560kbps. whats wrong?"
Go to www.dslreports.com , go to tools n tests, and test your MTU settings. There's instructions on how to increase your speed from YOUR end.. or at least optimize your PC for the fastest speeds avail to you. - BloodyNub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You want the most accurate download speed test? Go to www.microsoft.com, search for "Windows 2000 service pack 4", and download the network install. Have your finger on the O button and hit it as fast as possible when it comes up. Microsoft has pretty much unlimited bandwidth, and they shove packets down your throat.
- Khabi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0More bandwidth to test with does NOT make it a accruate test. You lose speed over distance. It can't be helped. Closer the hop, closer the results.
These are only good for a general estimate. Don't base crap off them. - nathanstarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I got 7.704 MPS down. I don't think that, that is right.... A little high for cable.
- einsteindesign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Comcast is upgrading all 6mbps customers to 8, so your results may be correct.
7962 down / 784 up is about right for me.
But I much prefer the speakeasy tests. You can poll servers all around the country; testing your local server for your connection robustness and then testing one from 2000 miles away for "practical" speed analysis. - Nessguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They simply said 'most accurate' speed test. If you want to know why they think that just read below the speed test and they explain.
- Albertpacino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh my god...
- DryPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How come every post making it to the front page gets the obligatory "this isn't news" or "wtf this sucks" blah blah blah posts? It is digg people, if you don't like the process go to CNN.com. Noone is making you "digg" this, but obviously some people have....carry on
- kingfoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This sux! I have Dsl 768kbps [ackage, adn the test gives me 560kbps. whats wrong?
- hax0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think my problem was that I had firefox set to Win 98 compatibility mode... I think it fixed the freezing problem I was having before, but I was getting a weird thing where firefox would just close on certain sites or become the top window every so often.. I'm off compatibility mode now.
- jneal94545, on 03/23/2009, -0/+093.971 down, 3.771 up.
Hurray for a campus gigabit connection! Too bad they limit the bandwidth for everyone except ITS. - RussianWulf, on 07/08/2008, -0/+0This speed test is full of ***** man.
My pipe is rated 10m down and 3m up, And i'm showing 4.7m down and 770k up from this site.
I get the most accurate reports at
http://www.speedtest.net/
and
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest - tanar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My DSL is a lot slower than my Cable Modem :) Thanks!
- worldtechguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0These people are the lamest bunch of bozos on the planet. 15 tests at a time? That's crap. And the test is useless since so few can ever get to it. F them.
- Jerry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Busy!!
- DEIx15x8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, $9.99 a month for nearly 1.6 mbps down speed and slightly higher than 150 kbps upspeed.
- ccanni1028, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I tried it five more times to see how consistent it was.
#1: 4216 down 3218 up
#2: 4216 down 4216 up
#3: 0 down 4218 up
#4: 4553 up 4553 down
#5: 0 down 4216 up
You decide for yourself how accurate and how consistent this test is. - theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+01.3m down 130k up from Aus. Pretty good :)
- bitchsauce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I get 22500 kbps with Comcast for $19/month. Who's the bitch (or your daddy) now?
- phatzo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0we got 4964 kbps w/comcast bitches
- boshka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You want a accurate test here it is folks.
Get a program like netpersec which gives you your total up and download at that moment. Then go and down load about 15 50mb or larger files. If one is downloading at 50KB another at 100KB and so on it doesn't matter. It will give you your total download at that time. So one locations crappy connection or another will even out because you will be looking at the combined total not just one. - godmode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0haha we killed it
