- inactive, on 11/01/2008, -3/+59the end of tv; appletv + tv + computer + large harddrive + boxee + hulu + squeezebox + xbox media center + linux + marone mia
- doublefelix, on 11/02/2008, -0/+46+ tv, Exactly!
- inactive, on 11/02/2008, -0/+45Now Hulu just needs to made available to places outside the US.
- rushiku, on 11/02/2008, -0/+38 On 'Social Features': Am I alone in believing that my every waking moment need not be shared with the world? I don't feel any need for my friends* to approve of what I watch or listen to.
* Let's face it, people you have never seen, let alone spoke to, are not your friends. The reason they requested your friendship, be it a common interest in the scenes of Happy Days where you can see gum stuck to the bottom of the Fonz's boots, or images of hamsters shaved to have head to toe mohawks, is most likely the only thing the two of have in common and an actual meeting of the two of you would most likely end in someone stabbing someone in the face rather than spend one more second in the presence of the other. - ScottMcIntyre, on 11/01/2008, -2/+38I wonder whether this will be available in the UK? Many of these video streaming technologies aren't.
- chrisgeleven, on 11/02/2008, -1/+26I still need live TV (sports, news, etc.). Until I can get that on boxee and/or appletv, I still have to pay for cable tv.
- basye, on 11/01/2008, -0/+21Boxee is great but still buggy (alpha release!). Having Hulu on there makes all the difference, and the social aspect is intriguing. I'm really looking forward to future improvements as this interface shows so much promise!
- edelay, on 11/02/2008, -3/+21The quality is too low.
- neasteflorin, on 11/01/2008, -2/+18From the article comments:
Thanks for the article. I started reading up on Boxee because it looks like an up-and-coming contender to other media center solutions (I’d love to see a comparison article between Boxee and, for example, Mythbuntu).
I was also wondering how Boxee could maintain a private beta, while still claim to be open source. After all, if the source is available, couldn’t anyone build it on their own?
It turns out the question of licensing was previously brought up in the forums here:
http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=382
The final word on the question comes from one of Boxee employees, and states that the source code will be made available to all alpha testers. In fact, “even though we only need to provide it to whom we distribute the software to, i.e. alpha users, we oblige every code request with simple invitation to our alpha”.
So, if you’re ever looking for an invite to their closed alpha, you can simply ask to see the source code, and you’ll receive an invite. - PxCxG, on 11/02/2008, -0/+15Hmmm... I feel like my tv + plus dvr is more than sufficient. Just how much time do you people have for tv watching?
- MattBD, on 11/02/2008, -0/+14Have you seen the rest of the world's TV? There's a lot of crap about everywhere.
- sgxyay, on 11/02/2008, -2/+15PS3 web browser + Hulu.
- edelay, on 11/02/2008, -2/+15You can vpn into the US internet and watch HULU
http://anchorfree.com/downloads/hotspot-shield/ - somedudemanguy, on 11/02/2008, -2/+13Ever since hulu came out, I haven't watched one actual tv show on tv. Are there any reasons not to?
- obeythefist, on 11/02/2008, -3/+14This is how I get my TV right now. I had fully planned on buying a Mac Mini to replace my Apple TV and then suddenly Boxee comes out for ATV. It's still in beta, but it's really a fantastic product.
- Eyebee, on 11/02/2008, -2/+13I don't watch TV anyway. I do grab a few things from Joost, Hulu, and UKNova, but network TV drives me nuts with all the pill-popping commercials every 6-7 minutes. I know advertising pays for the thing, but it's gotten excessive.
- Checkerd, on 11/02/2008, -0/+10I completely agree with you. We should be friends.
- affanjam, on 11/02/2008, -0/+9Or Canada :(
- cyberskier, on 11/02/2008, -0/+8So, is one of the reasons for Comcast's use of bandwidth caps getting more and more obvious? What better way to cut off competition than by making it not usable, through the use of caps. As we move to the internet, Comcast and others try to drag us back to old media.
- DeathGod321, on 11/02/2008, -2/+10Arrested Development
- HeatM311, on 11/02/2008, -2/+9XBMC - X Box Media Center
Great for regular 480i - 720p
Loved that setup for a few years great memories.
XBMC FTW! - cadmiumpaint, on 11/02/2008, -1/+8Here's a reason, my TV is much much bigger than my laptop screen. It also gets real HD broadcasting instead of that fake 480 stuff that hulu uses.
I love hulu as a backup incase i forget to DVR one of my shows....thats about it. - DrGamez, on 11/02/2008, -4/+11+ pandora + beer + another hard drive + capture card + schedulesdirect subscription + wireless keyboard/mouse!
It's THAT easy! - HillerMylife, on 11/02/2008, -2/+9480p is pretty decent for a network television show.
- insanebrain, on 11/02/2008, -1/+8Again ?? Digg announced the death of tv as much as the cure for cancer.
/pfffffff - abbathdoom, on 11/02/2008, -0/+6Boxee already supports iPlayer, it would support more British things if people wrote the plugins for it. Thats the beauty of open source though, anyone can contribute.
- sdcarter, on 11/02/2008, -0/+6This could be pretty useful. I didn't realize until recently that I watch a lot more online tv shows than I thought.
I just wish someone would make a dedicated 80's/early 90's cartoon/tv show site. I might even pay for access to something like that; depending on how much they have available. - sodade, on 11/02/2008, -3/+9Forced commercials.
- LawSchoolBound, on 11/02/2008, -0/+6Why on apple tv? Why not a small form computer that can play high quality high def material as well as optical media?
- bbland, on 11/02/2008, -0/+6tv has been dying for 25 years.
- ibeetle, on 11/02/2008, -0/+5I remember when cable T.V. subscriptions exploded in the earl/mid 1980's. Monthly in the video and technology magazines there was at least on article about how over the air broadcasting was dying and by the late 80's or early 90's free television would be long gone and even the traditional networks would not even exist any longer.
Well, 25 years later free over the air broadcasting is still around and in fact the best way to get uncompressed high definition television programing. - neasteflorin, on 11/01/2008, -5/+10They're giving away invites to the first 10 comments - I'm in.
- Pahtcub, on 11/02/2008, -2/+7Too bad the curent version of boxee is slow as balls and constantly buffers networked content, not to mention the online video feeds are jittery as hell....cool concept though. I've switched back to XBMC for my network content for now.
- AngelBunny, on 11/02/2008, -0/+5...on the tv
- NerveBand, on 11/02/2008, -0/+4who cares? Ignore them like you do on TV. Plus it's easier since you can just pull up an IM box or something to busy yourself with.
- ExRe, on 11/02/2008, -0/+4So much of the stuff I watch isn't on Hulu...ya, it sucks.
Sodade, honestly, complaining about having to watch 3 30 second commercials in a 20+ minute show? - nunofgs, on 11/02/2008, -0/+4No, it is not. It's slow as hell.
- ibeetle, on 11/02/2008, -1/+5You update your Playstation 3 software via the software update. Go to your Playstation 3 web browser and type in www.hulu.com.
With the newest update the Playstation 3 has support for the most current version of Flash. The same Flash format that Hulu uses. No need for anything else. - Klowner, on 11/02/2008, -0/+4It's amazing how many stupid drug commercials there are, nobody seems to notice how odd it really is. I guess a majority of people can't sleep, are depressed, have leaky butts, can't get a boner, and have nonstop allergy congestion.
- antiver, on 11/02/2008, -0/+4Miro + Netflix + Hulu = The end of TV for me
- vtnerd, on 11/02/2008, -0/+3Yes, lack of HD content is the reasons that Hulu is still useless to me.
I have a large HDTV and there's no way I'm going to watch 480p content through the internet when I can just set my DVR to record every new episode. My DVR will get the Dolby Digital and the HD and I can skip commercials. Hulu is nice if I forgot to set DVR or am away from home, but if I know in advance that someone I want to watch is coming on then I record it on DVR. - lakeshow, on 11/02/2008, -1/+4Sporting events?
- schnikies79, on 11/02/2008, -3/+6If I can't get live streaming NFL and MLB, then it's of no use. I only watch tv for sports.
- inactive, on 11/02/2008, -2/+5There will never be an end to "TV" Maybe TV as we know it, but there will always be major channels who dominate the tubes, be it through streaming like this or through your basic digital cable.
plus these services have ***** channels. I havent liked any shows on any of them. - rocknsk8r, on 11/02/2008, -0/+3Check out http://www.kidswb.com/video#/more/1387/23743/ for Warner Brothers and Hanna-Barbera cartoons. Full-length episodes, free.
- jhandfield, on 11/02/2008, -1/+4Excuse me as I continue to breathe normally. Most media-center-to-end-all-media-centers have never really seemed to live up to the hype. They all do some things well, but they all seem to have just as many critical flaws...
- bbland, on 11/02/2008, -0/+3you run this from "normal apple tv mode"
- craighoxton, on 11/02/2008, -0/+3Two reasons: House MD and Dr Cuddy's cleavage
- inactive, on 11/02/2008, -0/+3This won't be the end of TV. Not a chance. Not while technophobes are still the majority of the television market. Yes, the average person on Digg likes to tinker and isn't afraid of new things, but the average person is. You have the baby boomers who either want the newest toys but don't have the patience to learn how to use them or who just want to turn on their TV and flip through channels without having to navigate lots of menus. Old people are scared of their normal television remotes, so the chances of teaching them how to use anything more complicated than channel up/down and volume are slim. TV is going to be around for quite some time still.
- inactive, on 11/02/2008, -2/+5Must EVERYTHING about the US be bad?
As much as you hate this country, we have the best TV shows. -
