If you still think that a BSOD is caused purely by software, then you're not a true computer user - latova, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17This article is heavily concentrated on the blue screen of death, to the extent that it was overdone. In XP, the blue screen only shows when theres a hardware failure... you know, the REAL problems.
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Ugh. What a ***** article. Windows does not blue screen anymore unless youve got bad hardware, or bad drivers. It just doesnt.
- TenebrousX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9The title should be "The Sorry State of Device Drivers That Cause Resource Conflicts"
- mancat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I probably see less than a handful of these a year, usually after deciding to try out the latest Omega driver set. Can we move on please?
- lonnieh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Buried, just because of the retarded headline. Get a clue.
- Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7The last time i saw a BSoD i was using windows millenium on an emachine. eek.
- EEBaum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+51999 called, it wants its article back.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7The last time I saw the BSoD is when I was using ***** rams, like 2 years ago. It was scary as hell.
- atroxodisse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I haven't seen the blue screen of death in many years. Knock on silicone.
- oktobr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The sorry state of FUD. There's plenty to criticise about MS without exaggerating the frequency of BSODs since Win2k was released. I use OS X and Linux, but not because Windows is 'unstable'.
Buried 'Ok, this is lame.' - Hickeroar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I for one have been using XP since it came out. The only bluescreens i've gotten were caused by a botched installation of the NOVELL client that caused an endless bluescreen->reboot cycle...and that wasn't even on MY computer...
This whole windows=bluescreen crap needs to die. Bluescreens have been all-but rare since XP was launched... - Bara, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I see no mention of any other OS besides Windows and Mac... that suddenly means all operating systems are in a "sorry state"?
- falstaff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Heh, I had a BSOD in about 1999, when I plugged a modem clearly marked as only compatable with Windows 9x into my NT4 box. I needed a new modem, and this one was free (poor college student), so I switched to Win98 instead of buying a new one. The only time I've seen one since was this past winter after the power went out during a defrag (doh!) and I ended up reformatting my XP machine.
For the most part, Windows = BSOD is the same as Linux = Command line. Popular memes, but have been false for a long time now. - levi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you want to see a BSoD just buy a D-Link DWL-G132 every time you install the driver I guarantee you will get a BSoD. Works fine after a restart though.
- DannySpace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Back in the 90's, I just saved myself the trouble and used the BSoD as my background image. Now, I know I wasn't the only one who did this...
- Mannon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The first and last time I saw a BSoD in Win XP was when my Graphics Card decided to go bananas..
- kd1s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2BSOD's did happen pretty frequently in Windows 9x, but as of Windows 2000 they became less more frequent.
On my Win2K box I knew when the CPU fan went because the system would BSOD like crazy. A $5 fan fixed it. In essence, BSOD's these days are for true hardware faults. I have yet to see one on my Win XP laptop. But I know when the fatefull day comes that I'll be replacing RAM or CPU fan. - alwaysmc2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Nu uh! Millennium Edition. That was a BIG problem. >.<
But it hasn't been a problem in the past 5 years or so, which is a long time in tech years. - niwnfyc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I cant even remember the last time I had a blue screen. Bad software and hardware cause BSOD's, not XP.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually my fine-tuned workstation here will bluescreen if I do the following steps.
1. Logout of windows
2. Leave for the weekend
Every single time I come back it'll have an ntfs error with a blue screen. I still haven't figured out why. - mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1These days, BSOD = Kernel panic
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sigh and groan?
shudder?
horrific images?
not even close there dude. Relax its a computer glitch. Hardly cause for concern. So don't sigh, groan or shudder. Just fix the issue if you can or take it to someone who can. - cabazorro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Tom makes the hardware and device drivers, Dick makes the OS and Harry makes the 3rd party software.
What do you get!?
BSOD and Tom Dick and Harry pointing fingers at each other.
And that's okay, it keeps the standard open and people blowing hundred of dollars every 3 or 4 years to browse the web and write e-mail. - Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@TenebrousX: Or, the sorry state of windows, circa 2000.
- HonoredMule, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good, accurate title. Too bad there wasn't an article to go with it. Besides, since when did we evaluate computers based solely on whether they crash or not? With even an ounce of effort, the author could have produced reams of material to complain about for any given OS, without even mentioning anything that wasn't part of the core OS.
- OsiVert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"If you mention the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) to a Windows user, they will probably begin to sigh and groan"
I don't think i've ever heard people sigh and groan. People usually say, "Something probably happened to my hardware" or "What did I just install or try to change that would cause the BSoD to appear". Other times, it's just a glitch...just restart. I don't think I can remember the last time I got BSoD. - underthewether, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2the only time i've ever encountered the BSOD is when i was recently playing with the Vista Beta2
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4in windows 98se i had maybe 3 or 4 blue screens in xp NONE and i have had it since launch now let the flame wars begin and by the way macs r really ***** compared to windows nothing wrong with linux go windows and linux woot
- sigfpe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0'knock on silicone'
Silicone is what goes into breast implants. Silicon is what goes into integrated circuits. Then again, maybe you did mean 'knock on silicone'. - magnorock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The only time I have seen XP blue screen, and I have 3 of my own was on a friends Dell that they had me work on. OS had crapped out on them and I did a wipe and clean and it pretty much hated the Dell driver for the sound card. Had to wipe it a second time and started with the sound driver and then it worked like a charm. Again, bad driver for the hardware caused the problem.
- epinephrine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Pardon?
- OsiVert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Well, the first piece of advice I can give you is check the error logs...unless it's not booting. Then you might want to talk to one of your friends who is "fluent" in computers.
- Danikar, on 10/12/2007, -9/+6The blue screen of death hasn't been a problem since Windows 98. I guess on your definetion of "true windows user" that statement might be true.
- dazlm, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0sigh got BSODed a couple of days ago i'm not that fluent in computer so i'm kind of lost how to not let this happen again
- slithy, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3The title of this article should be "The Sorry State of Windows."
