- igutekunst, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13The chat box on the side is flooded with immature comments, spam, on no useful purpose whatsoever.
- SuperSloth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Yep. Add whatever features you want. Chat is still chat.
- isuldor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8What a great article. With new services being provided like land line calling, location based chat, and contextual chat, it's nice to see that the instant messaging medium is being turned into something potentially useful.
- phlux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I agree - for public pages.
But I really do see that the chat box as shown there would work well in an intranet environment.
On a departmental page - you can have bots reply to std questions about departmental issues (used to do this with an IRC server all the time) and if it logs all the posts the department can use it for metrics as well.. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4its like the first link on there!
- soul12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i just want tabbed IM windows
- zoom1928, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5You mean like all chat? There's a reason most people give-up on that garbage by the age of 20.
- nubtard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Forget new ideas. I still want a single open protocol that EVERYONE uses so I don't have to use five different plugins. I want voice chat, I want camera chatting, I want multi-threaded file transfers. I DON'T want ads.
It will probably never happen but I can dream. Even with all the multi-protocol messengers, under the surface it's still unorganised and messy and only 99.9% of all features can ever work. - Xilon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Jabber is probably the closest you will get. The transports kinda allow you not to use a plugin... though it's pretty similar.
- thestu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2interoperability is perhaps the greatest benefit of this new chat technology. by allowing users to cross protocol bars, chat can be accessed and used more effectively and efficiently, allowing, for lack of a better phrase, a flattening of the world.
- Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2what about meebo
- Estazor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Not a bad article at all. I liked it and hope that more improvements come to Instant Messenging as time goes on.
I have to say it seems like everyone is taking Instant Messengers more seriously what with so much competition now. Even AIM has put out a half decent client now and I'm glad to see it. - igutekunst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Whats wrong with Trillian?
- ToxicWombat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Fantastic article. Most informative one on digg in a while.. alerted me to many cool web apps I hadn't even heard off. Well worth the digg - good find!
- maledei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1what about jabber chat for cell phones? like open source client bombus: http://bombus.jrudevels.org/index.php
the site is Russian ([Загрузить] means download), but the client is English if you want to give it a try.
http://mabber.com/ would be the commercial attempt. - Xilon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gaim/Adium would probably be the most portable solution (Gaim runs on Linux and windows, and probably more, Adium is a Gaim port for Mac OSX)
- jstrat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can't believe they didn't include http://www.gizmo.com under rich media. They started with many free features that Skype is just now offering for free(and some that are still pay). They also have some nice little extras, my favorite being the record button nicely placed in the upper right corner of the call window. I had such trouble finding a separate software to record podcast interviews. I love their free conference calling too-hey it's free and versatile anyone on a PC(with Gizmos of course) or land line can join the conference. On top of that they seem to be testing a new plan to offer totally free land line calling worldwide.
I liked the article but I thought it could have been researched a little bit more. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4not crashing FF2 here, not worth reading anyway though
- JoshuaE74, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is a very cool API that AOL has exposed for webbrowser based instant messaging. More information here:
http://developer.aim.com/webaim
Code samples and a working example can be found here:
http://slayeroffice.com/code/wim/ - Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1instead of plugins theres gateways
but gateways you dont need to install you just find and use them on your jabber cleint
like icq email msn irc aol yahoo - Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that isn't even remotely close to what we are talking about
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A nice chat application to chat like meebome is Interaction: http://www.interactionchat.com
- Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1or this
http://mobber.gryf.info/
not sure what features or anything since i just googled it - reginabally, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Interoperability allows users to use one single software to chat with different users using different protocols. Interoperability indeed is the future of IM / chat.
- LarsHin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree that interoperability is the best advancement here. It can allow us to connect to everyone we want to without opening up different types of chat.
I hope they can effectively integrate the flexible identities however. Different chat is used for different purposes and keeping this separate within one single chat browser would be very useful. - Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1instant messeging is chat but chat you can choose who to chat with
thats why its better to use im then a full chatroom to just talk because there are idiots in a chatroom and im you can block them in (unless you want to talk with multiple people) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Make sure you integrate your favorite chat clients into your Windows installation CD ;)
Skype, Yahoo Messenger, QiP... http://addons.wordpress.com/ - RuslanZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They also did not mention that one can make voip calls from Google Talk to PSTN, MSN and SIP (for free) through http://www.gtalk2voip.com/. Since Google Talk is based on open standards, many services already avalable for its users and alot more are coming.
- Estazor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"AIM 6.0 is terrible, kills RAM completely"
@cubs
I'm looking at the RAM usage and right now the aim client is using 10 MBs while the aolSoftware, which I hate that's it's just there, is using 7 MBs. That's the most it ever really gets. I don't see how that is killing any of my RAM. Not to mention AIM now has a lot of features that was sorely missing and I get the features working fully instead of waiting on an GAIM or Trillian to perfect it.
Don't get me wrong I hate AOL as much as the next internet user but I gotta give credit where it's due. They did something right for once. Not that's it's perfect but it's still dare I say...good. - YourTechSupport, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2It's all just more petri dishes for Giftococcus Entardilitus. (Greater Internet ***** Theory)
- harry80, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great ideas in on-line communication.
nice article! - flcnstu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As people are spending more and more time on their computers and talking to eachother throught the web, we are seeing more and more advances in the way we communicate. It just keeps getting cooler and cooler with all the options one has available,
- RuslanZ, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Use Google Talk instead. It's neat! :-)

- Tayls, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Ugh, ***** this *****. Excuse the language, but I'm so tired of second guessing a purchase I'd make as soon as I possibly could. Stop adding features, shut up and give me a Wii, Nintendo. I'm drunk, don't mind my rage. *****, I want to play Wii Sports.
- hardwareguy, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Completely forgets to mention gaim
