- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+74Sidebars SUCK! I want all my screen space available at all times.
- ravi7791, on 10/12/2007, -7/+35Same here. They've always annoyed me, from the Favorites [and such] sidebars in IE to the Gadgets stuff in Vista.
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24Sidebars are created when this happens.
"Hey, I programmed all these new things, but I have nowhere to put them!" - supermanred, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Thats why I love the OS X dashboard. Hit F12, all my crap comes up...hit F12 again everything goes back to normal.
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Idea: Let people who WANT sidebars use sidebars without being harassed about it, and let people who DON'T want sidebars NOT use sidebars without being harassed about it.
- pingviini, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16burke,
the web needs more people like you. - marnaq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14No, that wouldn't make any sense.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15@Burke
Good call man, I was thinking the same thing... then I saw your post.
@movd
Good work on the english! Keep it up :) - diabolicdiablo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I second that. 2 places that I don't want random programs running:
1 Sidebars
2 System tray - WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17++
Seriously, sidebars with random functions are poor use of screen real estate. If I want to chat it should be in a separate small window that I can control and place as I please. It's fine if you want to include every feature including the kitchen sink into your app, but for the love of science, don't try to cram everything into a single window when they're not part of the same workflow... - burke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14EDIT: I had typed up a sarcastic comment making fun of your english, but I see you're German. Since my German vocabulary is limited to "guten tag" and "ich bin hungrig", I'll leave you to it :)
- passdoubt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11This is a pretty lame article if you ask me... Sidebars are an option in Firefox, so people develop things for them, some people use them, some people don't, end of story. Why do articles like this make the front page of Digg all the time? Did anyone really get anything out of this that they would ever mention to a friend? No offense to the writer of the article or anything, but I'm kind of let down by Diggers here.
- Lord_oftheTrons, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Yeah but sometimes they are useful when coupled with a widescreen monitor. Most sites content barley takes up all of my 22" widescreen, so sage rss reader makes use of some of that space nicely. I think it is better to just have an im client open and not have firefox maximized to take advantage of that extra space without a crappy sidebar.
- JesusFaction, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Is it irony the TFA has a sidebar that takes up 1/3 of the screen?
- jeffdjohnson, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11In defense of the sidebar (although I won't specifically support something like IM there)...
The Firefox bookmarks sidebar is nice, especially when you have a widescreen laptop screen and the vertical screen real estate is at a premium. Prevents scrolling like a madman. - Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Get another monitor. Make one monitor the "Sidebar Monitor."
- Eldshy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The only sidebars I like is the ones in Opera. Because they are so utterly ridiculously easy to hide when I don't want to see them (and that is almost always), and just as easy to bring out when I need them. Perfect. All hail the Norwegian Overloads...*cough*... got ahead of myself there...
- duality, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm not a big fan of sidebars myself. The technique may seem sound at first, but it doesn't play well with websites that have a fixed-width layout. Personally, I prefer having the option to open my tools in different ways. In particular, I like tools that can be stacked, such as with a combo box or a row of tabs. Many Firefox extensions can be made to load into tabs, rather than into a sidebar or a separate window. For example, ChatZilla, FireFTP, and Download Manager Tweak are add-ons that I use to load IRC, FTP, and the Downloads window (respectively) into tabs.
- fulldecent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You're saying we shouldn't have flame wars? I bet there's a lot of people here who would disagree with you.
- supermanred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3lol yeah I had a sidebar program running in Windows 95. New trend?
- iMatt711, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2never liked sidebars, they remind me of the old days of having a frame on the left side of a page for links and a center main page.
- TheBrandman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, the Opera Sidebar is really useful and customizable. I love having an entire list of everything on digg as well as email, email contacts, and bookmarks easily navigated on the side of my screen and without having to open a new window.
- gypsi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2New trend? did you start just using the intarweb 5 months ago or something?
- superal1394, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The only sidebar i've installed is All-In-One sidebar, which takes all of Firefox's little windows (page info, downloads, extensions, ect.) and puts them into the sidebar. It is much more convenient than having little windows pop up all the time.
- PauseBreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Buried for pure lameness. Even though some of the comments here are good.
Who cares? What's next? Someone angry about widgets? Someone angry about Google ad placement? Someone angry because not everyone on the internet agrees with their point of view?
Ooops. All covered. - movd, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9the delicious plugin for the sidebar is great! but i dont would not want to have my im their.
- eean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"So either a person will put an IM client in their sidebar, or a social network. "
Kind of misses the point that a buddy list is um, a social network. Given that the Firefox folks haven't even released anything yet, at least give them a chance...
I have the Facebook toolbar that I use for its status indicators and the [Share|+] button. Its sidebar is a bit of a gimmick, as our most sidebars I've seen. - EggoTrip, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Two years from now we will all have a browser OS with its own desktop and real window management. This sidebar junk will instead be programs that aren't installed on your computer (not even as extensions).
- KraigR, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5in firefox i use sidebars only when needed.....i have vista and xp and hate sidebars like gadgets and google desktop and refuse to use them
- theMurdocVolta, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Not to sound like a dick, but all three of those examples had a X button to close the sidebar, so if you don't like it close it.
- AdebisiTheGamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Like just about everyone who owns a computer I had a 2nd video port going unused. Went into the classifieds, got a 17 inch monitor, FOR FREE, and now have plenty of desktop real estate. I didn't use Google desktop before but now I have it on my 2nd monitor all the time, along with a bunch of other little things.
If you want the functionality of the sidebars and do not want to lose desktop, you can get used monitors for nothing or next to nothing these days. - keithc01, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3We program our own sidebars at work all the time and actually get a lot of use out of them. This article notes the fact that you can only have one sidebar open as a flaw. Did they forget that you can close one to open another? No one said you have to pick one sidebar and keep it open all day. I use sidebars for a few minutes and then close them because I also like to have as much space as possible. Sidebars with the *right* kind of content can be very useful and save a lot of time. Click a button, do whatever, close the sidebar. It works.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"This is certainly a great feature and will allow users to stay in touch with friends, without the need to periodically click on the taskbar."
Haha don't have this problem on Macs because we use computers properly and don't run everything fullscreen needlessly - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Netscape used to have an option for tabbed sidebars so you could have multiple sidebar plug-ins running at the same time.
- jmnormand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1giving the proliferation of wide-screen monitors and the fact that all the web is still designed around standard screen dimensions this makes sense. hopefully we will start seeing site designs that encompass and effectively utilize the extra width. though if side bars catch on quick it may be to late.
- Bentley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Google's sidebar is great. Love seeing the latest digg headlines by simply pushing my mouse to the side of my screen! Damn, if only I could find something similar for Gnome...
- Aeyar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sidebars are annoying from my perspective. If websites were all designed to squish nicely into a narrower window, it might be a cool feature to use regularly, but as it is, no thanks. I'd rather have a toolbar with a dropdown menu, or a separate window altogether. This is not to say I'm against the option of a sidebar; they should be provided as a possibility for those who want to use them, but... well, let's put it this way: I heart "X"
Edit: Doh, no arrows. - Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I know just the stuff I learned in English class(we had a ww2 unit oddly enough so I learned the name of the book that Hitler wrote and atchung German for Attention)
and the stuff I heard from ramstein - Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Google talk sidebar is just a hack of the Google talk gadget
I don't use sidebars mostly because tabs are sufficient
why not a tab manager sidebar
or would that cause the universe to explode - phexchanger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I also want a full screen when working, even when working with other applications. Even our screens are getting overly-populated with this new trend, a virtual real estate turning into a mess of reality.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Vista does not allow you to remove the dumb ass favorite links sidebar.
- NeoRicen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1bury
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"Sidebars SUCK! I want all my screen space available at all times."
All it takes is a touch of the key to hide it, how hard is that? - wideawakewesley, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5Totally agree, sidebars are a stupid fad that won't be around in a few years time.
- impedance101, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1wtf, i didn't know we could have sidebars for things other than the browser history!
- KielKilla, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Personally I love Opera's sidebar more then the usually bookmarks button at the top.
- TriZz, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4Ummmm, they're quite simple to turn off. They usually have a little "X" icon in the upper-right hand corner of the sidebar that you can click to make them disappear. It's not that difficult. Go ahead, give it a try.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Quit bitching and buy a bigger monitor, or turn the damn thing off if you don't like it!
- taxali, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3Ironic how sidebars like the ones in the examples were made for Web 2.0 apps.

What is Digg?
The Digg Toolbar for Firefox lets you Digg, submit content, and keep track of Digg even when you're not on the Digg site. Download the official
