- IanLynch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was once told some time ago that AutoCad had the most CAD installations but was nowhere near 50% market share in terms of revenue. If you only count paid for software in market share from license revenue free software will never show in the statistics. So we could get to a situation where all of China and India use OpenOffice and derivatives and Microsoft still claim 95% global market share. IT is a con game so confidence through damned lies and statistics is to be expected particularly from those with strong financial incentives to be economical with the truth.
- bhorst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Marketshare can be very difficult to track with open source programs, as download stats don't tell you how many people are using the software or how many others they have shared it with. OOo's main download site is far from the only one: most Linux users get it with their distro, many Mac users run the NeoOffice variant from another site, etc, etc. I'd guess that Linux and OpenOffice.org usage are generally under-reported.
The 20% marketshare for OOo seems plausible; much more believable than the 95% number often thoughtlessly quoted for MS Office in the press.
