- MackDiesel2010, on 10/12/2007, -19/+192Dugg because the article doesn't mention Apple operating systems
- betterth, on 10/12/2007, -66/+167Most of these are retarded! Some of these are genuine concerns, but I swear, this guy probably complains that his coffee is hot.
Vista: Game Off! - He claims that Vista doesn't play many games like NFS:MW and Oblivion. What a retard, as I currently have both games installed on my Vista box and they both run beautifully on Vista. Theres no way around this, this is a complete flat-out lie, as these games worked in the RTM four monthes ago as well :(
Network Places - "Oh my god, it shows all network resources, and I have to make my own list of "favorites" if I so desire" QQ more please?
Anorexic Feedreader - "A single widget isn't as fully featured as we'd like!" - Then write your own! That's the entire point of the widget system. The feed tool is there as a demonstration at best, it's not built to be the quintessential RSS Widget.
Who's in Charge Around Here? - Apparently having more security around the tools where a hapless user can cause damage, or a script could automatically use, is a bad thing. What is it people? We want more security? We want less?
Search Instantly Anywhere (As Long As by 'Anywhere' You Mean 'Where Microsoft Thinks You Should') - (it only indexes certain folders) I honestly have not had this issue one bit. My search instantly finds files lodged on my desktop, in some game folder in C:Program Files, etc etc. "Stupefyingly slow searches"? Is he even using Retail Vista? I've never had anything but a blazingly fast search, and my hard drive is 200GB full!
Who Rearranged the Furniture? - ("They moved display properties") Well they had to chief. There are about seven more options now, and they wouldn't have feasibly fit in a right click menu. So guess what, they made a single option for display options, which leads to a menu. On this menu, you can clearly find Display Properties like before. It's even on the very bottom, exactly where it was on the right click menu. Oh my god, they added one extra click into the mix. They truly are evil over at Redmond.
Yes, Mom, I Really Do Want to Install This Software - Fix: DON'T USE INTERNET EXPLORER. Fixt.
Only the Rich Shall Virtualize - Correction: Only the rich shall virtualize Vista on older version of Windows or other OS's, but Vista users will virtualize old windows versions for free. Not to mention, Cupertino competitors DON'T EVEN ALLOW THIS FEATURE. "Zomg, even though Microsoft offers us this feature and it's competitors have completely refused to do so, we'll still point out how bad this feature is!"
The Downgraded Upgrade Disc - ... Are you ***** serious? Like honestly, he's complaining that the upgrade disc has to be 'upgraded', and that you can't fresh install off an upgrade disc? Theres a reason it's cheaper, tardjar. Don't buy an "upgrade" disc if "upgrading" is an issue.
Is This My OS or Hollywood's? (Or, Why Do I Have to Buy a New Monitor Again?) - Right, because any other OS allows non-HDCP monitors to show DRMed content.... NOT. At least MS is allowing us to view the content if we have the MPAA -mandated hardware. More than others are allowing.
Ultimately Expensive - At least it doesn't cost a couple hundred plus $100 a year. (Haha, I kid, don't mod me down too much, Apple-fanboys)).
The Large-Print Edition - This is an issue for upgrades only, which honestly, upgrading is not a smart idea. Always better to fresh install. I mean, honestly, you're seriously complaining that your icons moved when you upgraded from XP to Vista. I'm surprised it kept your icons on your desktop. This isn't installing program, this is a complete and utter OS change, straight down to it's very core, and yet, you're bitching that your icons were moved. Wow. I'd love to see a user upgrade from OS9 or OS10 and see if their icons persist.
Ahhgh! My Screen Blacked Out! - See "whining about the security that we all whined for".
Home Basically-There's-No-Reason-to-Buy-This : Right, because you can't seamlessly upgrade to a better version without a cd or anything. Oh wait, you can, since they designed this version to be a cheap version that if you wanted, you could easily upgrade later to unlock the better features.
I'm sorry but I didn't find a truly real worry here. This is all whining, bitching and moaning and only two or three of these issues I'd consider real. Hell, some of them are flat out lies. This was really not worth the read =( - theblueprint, on 10/12/2007, -20/+112I was dual-booting Vista and another OS, and the annoyances in the article match mine. Well written article, and FUD-less.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -31/+77What I notice is everyone wants Vista to be XP with a face lift. Its not XP with a face lift. Its a completely new operating system. Pretend like you are switching from XP to OSX or Linux; and you will like it better.
I switched during the beta 2 trial over the summer. It took a week or two to get used to all teh new settings, but once you are used to it, XP seems so old and crappy...
People just need to give it a fair chance. - alwaysmc2, on 10/12/2007, -4/+44whoa! That is actually amazing. (No, I'm not even joking.)
- bonyicecream, on 10/12/2007, -32/+71Microsoft just needs to restart, completely overhaul windows's source code. No more basing it off that windows NT *****, it's old and needs to be replaced. Restart with a totally different kernel and get the damn thing designed right in the first place, rather than designing it wrong and trying to cover all the holes with trashy duct tape.
Heck, maybe even make that a side project instead of just making one new OS, make two. One based on NT and one completely overhauled. I'd just say that because, knowing microsoft, they don't want to leave their old design... - Crass22, on 10/12/2007, -50/+84I like how people get upset over the fact that you need a previous XP install to install Vista with the "Upgrade" Disk. Did people honestly think they were sneaky and could trick MS by buying the update disk and using it as though it were a complete edition disk? Wheres the logic?
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27Not only that, it shouldn't ever turn fully black. They are likely just experiencing a ***** video driver issue. The back of the screen should become darker, but the long flicker, as if the resolution was changing, is a video driver crap-out.
- marcuschi, on 10/12/2007, -36/+56You're an idiot. If you knew how to operate it, it wouldn't be annoying. Trying using it for more than 5 min you noob.
- Lynn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19It looks nothing like OSX.
- theuber1337, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21"Seriously - I've got a PhD in Computer Science and CAN'T GET EXCEL WORKING !!!"
Ha ha ha ha ha HA! ... Cause you type like a 13 year old girl. - Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Agreed with some of those points.
To be fair the virtual desktop (screen blanking) on UAC is a security feature to stop look-alike programs confusing the user. It also makes the user focus on the alert box itself.
They should have put an option in to turn it off, luckily if you ahve business or ultimate you can use the group policy editor, or if you're using home premium/basic there's an entry in the registry you can change. - ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -13/+30Nice copy and pasting, troll.
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -10/+25A lot of these are non issues.....Like the search indexing one. Oh no! Microsoft doesn't index Program Files or the Windows directory by default! Oh no! I did an upgrade install and my icons on my desktop aren't in the same position as they were! Oh no! My ***** video drivers are causing the screen to flicker when the UAC safe desktop appears!
Still, it isn't a typical digg "Get a mac! M$ IS TEH EVIL!" article, so I won't bury it. A few of these might confuse non-tech savvy users. - emailingRob, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18"And trading IE for Firefox is like moving away from Mom and into your cool older brother's apartment." Now that's the best comment in the entire article.
- edm1950, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18The most annoying thing about Vista is the over abundance of Forum threads about all that is with Vista.
- RealHyperX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Vista is the reason my company is looking at Ubuntu and Red Hat. We tested Vista and the way it broke all our custom apps, was the same way Linux did. In the end, we decided it would be cheaper to re-do the apps to be Linux compatible knowing that they will always work going forward. Thanks MS!
- daborg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14The #1 feature of Vista is that you don't have to buy it or use it.
- krinthekuz, on 09/16/2008, -16/+28i'm a linux geek, and i've even blogged about how lame vista DRM is (not going to spam my links here), but this article is trash. what kind of idiot tells people to stop using their $HOME folder and to store files all over the place? what kind of moron tells people to completely ignore security alerts? what kind of dumbass advocates running things as root/admin all the time? what kind of whiner cries because a few menus changed in a new OS?
there are loads of things to gripe about in vista, and these are not them. - Hitchhiker90, on 10/12/2007, -8/+19Now lets see you post some articles from non-biased sites. gnu.org and schneier.com? c'mon man.
- sleepwalkers, on 10/12/2007, -10/+21Get the ***** off my internets.
- shmatt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13bgbs-
OK, now I KNOW that you're talking ot of your ass. OS X is not in any way similar to or built on Windows, it's Unix-based. I don't need to even prove it, google will do that for you. - Magadass, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11They forgot to mention a couple things that basically made me storm out of my chair one night and rip open my collection of software in anger to install Windows XP so I can dual boot with Vista.
First off the File Dialog window is HORRIBLE, when I got my XP install back and the file dialog window popped up for something I actually let a breath of relief out since I don't have to spend time trying to navigate through the horrible excuse of a file dialog window that is in Vista. Why the hell do I want my recently browsed to URLs in the drop down for my file dialog window? I DON'T!!
Secondly Windows Explorer has been butchered to living hell, the only new thing I like about it is the bread crumb feature in the file path box at the top of the window.
Thirdly, fine I get it you want to get rid of menus. But seriously do a better job at the interface without menus, for example in IE7 if you want to Export your favorites, how would you navigate without the file menu to do that? I couldn't figure it out, or at least I wasn't willing to I simply turned the File menu back on and went File -> Export
Fourth yeah glass is cool and pretty but Jesus Christ its horrible from a usability perspective. It kept my Ge-force 8800 GTX whizzing loudly the entire freaking time also, not to mention the horrible driver support mentioned in the article! Oh and they really don't do justice on how bad the driver support really is, from Vista to XP its a world of difference with NVidia products.
Fifth UAC is lame, although I want to mention the black screen the article mentions is a video card driver glitch. Its suppose to smoothly transition like the shutdown screen does but it doesn't at the moment so you get this FLASH, BLACK, FLASH FLASH BLACK, thing going on which is so irritating I disabled UAC within 1 week.
Sixth everything feels awkward, not sure really how to explain it but I never feel like I am using Vista properly and I have been using it since Beta days (legally I was a Beta tester) and I still don't feel comfortable with it. Especially using IE7, the interface is so awkward not to mention the various random hangs and smooth scrolling glitches it has that are SO very annoying.
Seventh, multi monitor support is the EXACT same as in XP, what the hell? So they claim this is a leap forward but they didn't touch the multi monitor support, oh and Ultramon doesn't work correctly with Aero enabled. For me this was one of the huge deal breakers, I use my multi monitor setup so often that at work I find myself trying to instinctively drag things onto a non existent screen.
To me these gripes are worse than anything else I have encountered so far, and are more personal in some areas. For those people that list DRM as annoying, I don't support DRM and I think Microsoft caved into the bullies by adding it in but I can honestly say I never encountered it. I watch movies on my computer, play *music* if you know what I mean and I never encountered a single DRM problem the entire time. In fact unless someone told me DRM was on Vista I wouldn't even know it.
My overall opinion as a hardcore technology enthusiast and Microsoft's Technologies Developer for nearly 12 years, Vista simple isn't ready for the hardcore user. I think my parents would be more than happy with Vista since they typically don't do everything we do on an average day, my parents may install software 2-4 times a year, once its installed they are pretty happy with it and never really touch it. I setup my parents XP machine with Live One Care and its been humming happily for nearly 1 year now, previously I had to stop by regularly to disinfect it, update it, rework it. I think Vista is a step in the right direction, but its only that, simply a step. Microsoft has a couple more steps to go before they are truly and surely walking. - shmatt, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15Ubuntu = $0
OS X = $129
Vista with comparable features = $400!
now THAT is some economics. - goat2, on 10/12/2007, -11/+20informing the consumer, oh ***** you
- se1zure, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10@GoatBnn
"People just need to give it a fair chance."
I gave it a fair chance. My ati driver apperently didn't work with Vista, and every time it turns of the monitor for powersave, vista restarts.
Camtasia studio doesn't work... period.
My programs run slower on a fresh install of vista, than on a fresh install of xp.
Until there is vista only app's (or 64 bit optimized, since i have a core 2 duo), there is no reason to get vista, becuase programs run in some cases 20+% slower! - josegutz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12One of the MOST annoying thing about Vista is that you Have to succumb to their minimum operational hardware upgrades... And to top it off, it's not that much of an "affordable price" BLAH.
- mystagogue, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10@bony
they do have a new research OS that is really interesting called Singularity. google it and read about it. i think ms would love to start over with a fresh kernel designed with everything in mind that's been learned in the past 20 years, but unfortunately they've painted themselves into a corner because they _have_to_ support legacy software. few people would upgrade to Vista if their Win2000/WinXP apps didn't work on it. personally i think they'll eventually move to a managed kernel like Singularity's but it will be a slow transition. they'll run Singularity and Vista in a hypervisor, some drivers and services will be hosted in Singularity and will communicate with proxy code running Vista somehow. more and more things will move into Singularity and then it will flip: Singularity will be the main OS and old Win32 stuff will run behind the scenes as the world moves to the new API. we can all cross our fingers, at least. - Keitosha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Another annoying thing: MS has removed DirectSound in Vista aka HAL, used for EAX. A huge problem for all X-fi owners like myself unable to enjoy their soundcard like they should.
There's a "solution" called ALchemy, but it's still a workaround. - sleepwalkers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@crass: The logic is that with XP, you were able to just verify your original install media (ME, 2000, and 98 SE were valid, I believe), and if you proved that you owned a copy of a recent previous Microsoft OS (therefore you were UPGRADING to a new OS [wow!]), you could do a clean install, which has long been regarded as the "way to go".
- DarkJC, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Not if you do it too much. I've left it on for the sake of taking advantage of "increased security" but honestly it happens so much it gets to a point where your automatically clicking "Continue" and "Allow"
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"What they really should do is have a checkbox -- 'don't ask for this application again' or allow users to setup trusted locations."
Absolutely not. That would defeat the purpose. What if a trusted application was to execute malicious code? That's why explorer doesn't run elevated, ever. It can load extensions. - jared92, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8geez man
chill pill... - DeepDoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I have the Ultimate version on a new laptop.
So far, its a mixed bag. Everyday tasks are easy enough to get accomplished, but troubleshooting has been crazy.
Like yesterday, I had an application that had a problem that had to be solved by regediting. Vista fought me tooth and nail on that and I had to do a lot of permision changes.
I also do not like the way it handles wireless connections. I liked XP better for that. Vista tries to make wireless too easy with wizards and ends up hiding advanced settings that one might need from time to time. - auburnguy1000, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Amen to that. Windows 2000 Pro for life, or until windows comes out with an OS that is actually worth the money they are asking for it.
- dw2005, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9What they really should do is have a checkbox -- 'don't ask for this application again' or allow users to setup trusted locations.
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -3/+9A PhD in Computer Science, eh? Why don't you start working on your own OS?
- replica, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12What are these people doing that they see UAC so much? I have seen the prompt once in the last 2 days and that was when I was uninstalling a program. Under normal use you will not see UAC very much.
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7No, you just screwed something up, Desktop Composition works fine with UAC disabled. You need to have the Aero theme running to get those things. If Flip3d doesn't work, that means you aren't running Aero Glass.
- Jimzip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's gonna happen for at least another year. Trust me.
Especially because it's been in development for so long, there's been a collectively held-breath. Plus there's always gonna be complainers I guess..
Maybe it's time to use that handy digg filter... *thinks*
Jimzip :D - DarkJC, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12For all you guys who are ignorant about how much DRM is actually in Vista (read: the ones who are being dugg up by ignorant Digg users) perhaps you should read this article.
http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut001/pubs/vista_cost.html - daborg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I'm now running OS X and Ubuntu on my computers because Windows is so damn annoying. It's not even because M$ is evil, it's just that I find (and always have found) Windows to be so damn painful to use. I'm glad I made the choice to drop it a couple of months ago.
Of course, I still have Win XP boots and VMs around for the odd time that I need to do something Windows-only at work. And I have to say that running both OS X and Ubuntu helps in covering all Windows usage areas - it would be more difficult if I could only run one of them. - loconet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Here is another article that may shine some light to all of you ignorant of how much control you've lost over your PC with Vista's DRM.
http://www.forbes.com/security/2007/02/10/microsoft-vista-drm-tech-security-cz_bs_0212vista.html
It is a major problem, it is not lies. - shmatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5He's saying that Home Basic is made for those who can't run aero, but since HB has so little to offer you should save your money for a new PC. You're twisting the argument.
- replica, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13You have no idea what you are talking about. What DRM besides HDCP (which will be in any OS that wants to play HD Movies including OSX) does Vista have?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Features_new_to_Windows_Vista - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7ATI and nVidia have been tweaking XP drivers for years, after all--but the number of games that are flat-out unplayable is just ridiculous. And we're talking popular games here, too: Unreal Tournament 2004, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and Need for Speed: Most Wanted, to name just a few.
Thank you finally someone with balls to point this out !! I was pin pointing this since the first Vista Beta !!! Make pissed that devs weren't ready for this !!
I mean this is a serious issue sound sto me MS got their hands into to many pies !! Maybe they better focus on eating supper before thinking about a rewarding dessert !!!! - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"t's not that the new names and locations are harder to use, it's that there's no particular need for the changes. And the new names tend to be vaguer than the ones they replace."
Amen. Microsoft needs to stop it already. It's ridiculous how they arbitrarily rename things. Consistency is the most important part of GUI design. - shaftarene, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Head to the User Accounts section of the Control Panel and click Turn User Account Control on or off. Uncheck the box labeled Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer, and then reboot your system. The UAC prompts will be gone.
So we still live in the days where every configuration change requires a reboot? And the fact that we're still constantly rebooting didn't make the list? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I actually think the camera wizard is SO much better. I dont want to take 15 minutes to download my pics. I just want it to happen. With vista, its one click; the way it should be.
- bolman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Are you kidding? Vista requires a pretty nice machine too, and guess what? You have to get hardware for it too. You're niggling over a few dollars."
I am not talking about how much you *end up* spending on similar configurations... My point is, Apple sells the OS *AND* the hardware to run it... How difficult is it to grasp the fact that they are passing the cost of OSX to the macs that they sell. C'mon it's a win-win situation for them. 1)They make people (like you) believe that OSX is inexpensive and make them blame M$ for their greed, and 2) Force windows prices down which, in turn, lowers M$ profit margins.
Don't get me wrong. I'm a mac user and I love it. But $129 price tag for OSX is just not realistic. For god's sake Apple sells iLife is $79 for single user and $99 for family. Do you really think that the technology and development cost behind iLife and OSX is only "few dollars"? -
