- inactive, on 07/01/2008, -2/+75I thought they were gonna link to some of those nifty apps I never heard of but I guess I expected too much.
- tenspeedogbb, on 07/01/2008, -2/+27An article about unknown software and the only one we get is ***** Handbrake? Nice tip, Dvorak. It's been known to everyone but you for well over a year.
- 4ster, on 07/01/2008, -2/+24I guess this comment thread needs to do the job Dvorak failed at--listing cool looking software. I'll start:
http://www.piclens.com/
http://www.stardock.com/products/ObjectDock/
http://getsongbird.com/ - Ustanik, on 07/01/2008, -5/+22ewe Dvorak. Is he still emitting hot air?
- inactive, on 07/01/2008, -1/+15Dvorak is nuts. And this article is useless, where are the links?
- brkhobowriter, on 07/01/2008, -1/+13"There is an endless supply of nifty apps and utilities out there that you simply have never heard of."
Alright... Like what?
Tell you what. Since PCMag likes to make misleading descriptions. Fellow diggers can reply to this post with their favorite software that nobody else knows. - hawksfan03, on 07/01/2008, -2/+13Pidgin is great for anyone who uses GTalk, AIM, MSN, Yahoo, and/or ICQ.
- litkaj, on 07/01/2008, -1/+12It's been a decade since Dvorak wrote anything worth reading.
- nmanguy, on 07/01/2008, -9/+20Dvorak=Lame.
- darkfus, on 07/01/2008, -2/+9This article reminds me of the old Windows95.com when people were really starting to crank out the 32 bit apps for the first time. You could buy the the whole site on CD at computer shows, etc. Lots of shareware and freeware on the site.
BTW, I can't finish this post without mentioning that Dvorak sucks. - gyberedeemer, on 07/01/2008, -0/+6http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html
Super Encoder... I mostly use it for converting pesky .mkv files into something useful, but it does just about any kind of conversion. Everyone may already know about it, but friends I've showed it to have really liked it. - sLydE, on 07/01/2008, -1/+6http://www.compiz-fusion.org/
'nuff said. - irishjays, on 07/01/2008, -0/+3Here is a list of some great unknown software:
DVDshrink: makes DVD smaller, amazing!
OpenOffice: It's like regular office, but kind of bland, but free, it uses open document stands to keep people up to date
gimp: named after a handicapped person, this graphics program, is like photoshop, but all the shortcuts are not so nifty to relearn
Wine: It's an emulator. Like Zsnes
Audacity: While windows sound recorder is great, sometimes you need more tracks, if you don't know what a track is, your probably unhealthy
AVG: anti-virus, but I don't get viruses, but people on cnet tell me this one is good for detecting
Firefox: it's like internet explorer, except not as functional
Google Desktop: The google people make searching your computer just like the web, while I prefer Microsoft's far superior built in search files and folders options, having a little variety is nifty.
Utorrent: - a nifty little app that makes all of these, and many other apps appear out of thin air. - arjie, on 07/01/2008, -0/+3Testdisk, it magically recovered and repaired a partition table that was showing up as 'unallocated space' everywhere. Coincidentally the way it recovered the table, it was arranged just the way I wanted it, which was what I was trying to do when I broke the table. I was foolish to try that without backups but yeah, god bless it.
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk - wonderbriefs, on 07/01/2008, -1/+3Oh God I wish Ubuntu was actually working on my system! I miss Compiz.

- WebfluidDotCom, on 07/01/2008, -0/+2it's nothing fancy but it will do the job. thanks for the tip.
- mrBitch, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2Dug for RocketDock - One of the first things I install on a Windows PC ( as well as utorrent, firefox, pidgin (adium for PC), and foxit PDF - beats the crap out of Adobe PDF reader)
- Slade605, on 07/01/2008, -1/+3You dirty two timing whore.
- stuffradio, on 07/01/2008, -2/+4Betanews is a good source for new programs.
- freebird09, on 07/01/2008, -2/+4Hmmm...same here.
I was waiting for him to mention some of said software, kinda a let down. - BoneStamp, on 07/01/2008, -2/+4Here's a nifty web app that I use when the software I'm working with doesn't have a spell check...
http://www.browserspellcheck.com/ - wonderbriefs, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1Yeah, PicLens is awesome. Try it out on a Facebook profile and you'll see why.
- antdude, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1Back during BBS days before Intrnet became hot, there were a lot of those unknown programs.
- samsoffes, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Dvorak = Stupid

- inactive, on 07/02/2008, -1/+2Buried. Article was crap.
- inactive, on 07/01/2008, -1/+2What the *****
- DaHuuuuuudge, on 07/01/2008, -1/+2Piclens is great. It makes Google Images so much better.
- randomguy132, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1Nice; I'm gonna checkout PicLens later tonight.
- Lemon, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1LiquidMac. 100% pointless, but fun!
- fryguy1013, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1It may work very well, but it has the worst GUI of any program I've ever used.
- ElBeh, on 07/01/2008, -1/+2ObjectDock is ***** bloatware along with everything else StarDock produces; try RocketDock instead.
- Tddupre, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1http://www.PhoenixDoSS.tk/
- Billbapapa, on 07/01/2008, -1/+2I would rather type on the Dvorak keyboard than read anything written by the Dvorak jackass.
- Lemon, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1For Mac, GetTube.
http://web.mac.com/simonvrel/en/gettube/gettube.ht ...
Rips youtube vids straight to mp4s. - giloron, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1It may be the greatest player ever, but that site is scary. It looks so shady, I'm afraid to download it.
- carlosglz, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Just what I was thinking! LOL
- billbugger, on 07/01/2008, -1/+1What happened to the rest of the article?
- inactive, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0Piclens is excellent - songbird still can't handle large libraries
- inactive, on 07/01/2008, -2/+2The more software, the better. The end-user can decide what suits their needs best.
- AdmiralAcbar, on 07/02/2008, -1/+1AVG is BS. Go with Avast.
