- jggube, on 05/03/2008, -4/+46Notepad++ is what I use.
- inactive, on 05/03/2008, -7/+34textmate, it's the real deal mate
- Netrilix, on 05/03/2008, -4/+23Emacs is a great operating system, but it lacks a good text editor.

- Acglaphotis, on 05/03/2008, -4/+17Bah, real programmers use butterflies: http://xkcd.com/378/
- Webwonk, on 05/03/2008, -3/+16TextPad has worked well for me.
- cjnkns, on 05/03/2008, -1/+13I prefer PSPAD - it's so much more fully featured imo to notepad++
- Cloudo, on 05/03/2008, -1/+12Notepad ++ for me
- samuelcotterall, on 05/03/2008, -0/+11I feel the same towards TextMate as I do Photoshop. I use it every day but I know it's got way more to offer than I am getting from it.
- Netrilix, on 05/03/2008, -2/+13I love EditPlus2 on Windows, vim anywhere else.
- SteveMax, on 05/03/2008, -1/+11M-x vi-mode
You know an editor is great when it can emulate its main competitor...
/Emacs guy - stargatesteve, on 05/03/2008, -0/+10looks like vim pwnt emacs... again!
- inactive, on 05/03/2008, -2/+12Umm...if youre running wine (impling a Unix or Unix-like (in this case I detect the strong stench of Linux) OS), why the hell would you ever tolerate Notepad++?
- siim, on 05/03/2008, -10/+19I'm using Notepad.
- secrity, on 05/03/2008, -0/+9A few people wanted to vote for it, but they couldn't spell it, so they said "***** it".
- inactive, on 05/03/2008, -0/+9im a can of soda.
- nixfu, on 05/03/2008, -6/+141) vi/vim
2) emacs
3) vi/vim
4) emacs
5) vi/vim - arduenn, on 05/03/2008, -1/+9WTF? No mention of TextWrangler? Best free text editor for the Mac!
- samuelcotterall, on 05/03/2008, -1/+9Coda is more of an all-in-one web development tool.
I like it too, but I wouldn't open it to write a shopping list. - dark1587, on 05/03/2008, -0/+7I like Smultron for my mac.
http://smultron.sourceforge.net/ - synae, on 05/03/2008, -1/+7Looks like I'll be trying Cream (mentioned in the article as an "ezmode" vim).
Been using SciTE for my plaintext editing though... - RaspberryBarret, on 05/03/2008, -0/+6BBedit seems to be missing.
- zeeneo, on 05/03/2008, -1/+7Scite
- jm1234567890, on 05/03/2008, -1/+7Smultron - http://smultron.sourceforge.net/
- leaflord, on 05/03/2008, -2/+8So you're saying that emacs isn't a good nuff text editor that it has to try be vim?
- knight666, on 05/03/2008, -0/+6***** yeah built-in FTP, MD5 checksums, color selector, color translator, code explorer, bracket finder, numeric base translator, projects and ***** I don't even know about even though I've been using it for over three years.
- blackjack75, on 05/03/2008, -0/+6I don't doubt VI has code completion. I just doubt I'll ever find it.
- SteveMax, on 05/03/2008, -0/+5No, I'm saying that it is so good it even includes vim. Or: the GP ignores the fact that Emacs has a good text editor both for those who like Emacs itself and for those who like vi/vim/etc.
Or, in a juvenile way, "ha!!! you said emacs lacks a good text editor, but it has the editor you like!!! This means you`re saying the editor you like isn't a good editor!!!!1 pwned!!!!!!!11!!!11!11111!!!!`1!one" :) - fluxion, on 05/03/2008, -0/+5just use the vimtutor program and learn to use vim straight up. you will NEVER be satisfied with anything from that point forward. trust me. just give yourself a few hours.
it's like someone learning to type for the first time (but doesnt take nearly as much practice)...it's tricky at first but once it becomes 2nd-nature you cant stand to go back to pecking at keys (i didnt learn to type till i was about 19). - Matt2k, on 05/03/2008, -0/+5I've tried lots of other editors, but I always come back to Textpad
Notepad++ was really good. Then it crashed on the second day and I lost a few minutes of work. I really can't tolerate a crash in a text editor. Someday I'll give it another try
Editpad Pro had a funky search interface. Wouldn't search in files & subfolders. The way the caret moved was odd, sometimes. FTP integration sounded nice but I didn't get a chance to test.
E was just gimmicky, marketing, fancy website buttons and a recorded video. Also couldn't search in subfolders that I could tell
The other test I have is how the caret moves when I'm quickly commenting out the beginnings of lines. If I have to move down AND then back to the left again, it fails. Textpad passes and its what I use and have used for many years. I know that seems like a silly test, but its obtuse enough that it catches other products by surprise most of the time, and it's important - tama00, on 05/03/2008, -2/+6im a fan of coda.
- Fibula, on 05/03/2008, -0/+4I've been using Smultron for about a year or so, and it's been my favorite ever since I discovered it. A nice, clean, uncluttered look that still packs in tabs and support for everything.
And it's free. - fermcg, on 05/03/2008, -5/+9I have downloaded it, but I couldn't test it for more than five minutes. vim seems to be bound to my fingers in a way it won't let me try other editors
:wq - danomagnum, on 05/03/2008, -0/+4If you have the alias set up.
- patm1987, on 05/03/2008, -2/+6*tear* no crimson editor. Notepad++ is still good, but crimson is one of the first things I install on a fresh reformat, sometimes even before visual studio.
- Sheco, on 05/03/2008, -0/+4you mean :x! because the parent used :wq which is saving and quitting, not only saving.
- selrahc, on 05/03/2008, -0/+4Ed isn't on the list? Such a shame.
- tuffy, on 05/03/2008, -1/+4I actually tried switching from Emacs to NEdit for a few months. But NEdit's cut&paste stopped working after a few hour's use on a consistent basis (requiring a quit/restart), and it hasn't been updated in years. So, I switched back to Emacs which is not only vastly more powerful, but even the bleeding-edge CVS version is rock-stable.
- andrewtheart, on 05/03/2008, -2/+5jEdit is epic fail
- SarahC, on 05/03/2008, -1/+4Editpad Pro!
- YamiJim, on 05/03/2008, -1/+4XML notepad is semi useful as well.
I dont know abgout adding this crazy M onto my VI though. - TylerDCA, on 05/03/2008, -1/+4Where is programmer's notepad 2?
- GMorgan, on 05/03/2008, -3/+6Comparing the other options to Emacs and Vim is like comparing the Wright Flyer to an F22. Emacs can do so much more than any of the other editors in the list that it isn't funny.
- camilos007, on 05/03/2008, -0/+3Textpad is amazing for coders. Quick and efficient and not over bloated with lots of crap. Its only drawback? They moved the find command from CTRL-F to F5. Why? Just why?
- musicbear, on 05/03/2008, -0/+3oh my gosh...love the textpad... since... wow... windows 95 days... textpad... awesome!
- ha1f, on 05/03/2008, -0/+3vi is superior to all, but textmate is pretty slick. everything else is 'meh...'
- humbled, on 05/03/2008, -0/+3I'm surprised Smultron wasn't on the list; there are some virtual duplicates on Windows and yet this is probably the best free text editor on OSX, period. A sad omission.
- my8bird, on 05/03/2008, -0/+2Crimson Editor, http://www.crimsoneditor.com/, is the best editor out there. Check it out if you don't believe.
- danomagnum, on 05/03/2008, -0/+2vim has code completion :)
and emacs does too I imagine, but that's madess - DaveMN, on 05/03/2008, -0/+2You can change this by going into the settings and selecting the Microsoft key mapping.
