- DigitAl56K, on 10/06/2008, -0/+43Don't bury him, he's actually correct. VLC *does* allow you to convert anything it can play.
In VLC 0.9.2:
* Media menu -> Convert/Save...
* Choose your files
* Click Convert/Save
* Choose your container format and codecs - cdawzrd, on 10/06/2008, -0/+38SUPER has a SUPER annoying website :-)
- d0ugfunny, on 10/06/2008, -1/+30you mean to tell me that my VCR is obsolete?
- noPCtoday, on 10/06/2008, -2/+25digg this if you hate those ***** 29.99$ ***** converters out there. Open source is the future.
- basye, on 10/05/2008, -1/+22I use Handbrake several times a week and it's always been trouble-free.
- hnazareth16, on 10/05/2008, -1/+17Solid list. I think I'm going to give Super a try.
- bluebirdgm, on 10/06/2008, -0/+14Appropriate that this turns up the day after the makers of my favorite media converter utility, VisualHub (for Mac), announced that they were not going to develop it further. It was both powerful and easy to use.
- drewfusb, on 10/06/2008, -1/+15also, dugg for using Dr Horrible as the associated image to the story:)
- EatingPie, on 10/05/2008, -2/+11I didn't know Handbrake was multi-platform. A good list because sometimes one transcode/reencode doesn't work in one program, but works in another.
I have terabytes of TS files (60hz MPEG2 and 50hz MPEG2/AVC), and just discovered TSremux and TSmuxer -- similar names, similar functionality, different programs.
I convert the TS to M2TS and stream these to the PS3 using a UPNP server (MediaLink on the Mac). The PS3 is a very robust decoder. Lots of TS files that my DVHS decks would glitch on work fine on the PS3, so this has been a great solution. Both programs are simple to use, and provide great results.
-Pie - Ghostalker, on 10/05/2008, -1/+9Super is nice, tons of options. If you misconfigure it, all it does is close itself out with a nice little error message; nothing messy.
- RoboDonut, on 10/06/2008, -1/+8Most of these are only front-ends. FFmpeg is the only real encoder/decoder there.
- ExSlashdotter, on 10/06/2008, -0/+7You know what sucks? Visualhub was just abandoned this week.
Yeah, i know. - Metalcard, on 10/06/2008, -0/+6Its number 5 on the list...
- jodadday, on 10/06/2008, -0/+6Why would you go to all that trouble for the crappy quality of sound you're getting? You could just open up limewire or your favourite torrent site and get the full 256kbps.
- ShadowofAres, on 10/06/2008, -0/+5So, how do I download Super? I'm on the erightsoft super page and can't find a download link.
- NewSc2, on 10/06/2008, -0/+5Read the whole list to look for VisualHub, only to find out it's been discontinued. Why?!? :(
It was so easy to use -- drag any type of video file, click a few options (quality, output format), and before you know it (or maybe after a half hour for movies) your videos were on iTunes, ready to be imported to iPod or iPhone. This makes me sad. - inactive, on 10/06/2008, -0/+5visualhub ftw!
- Apocalyptic0n3, on 10/06/2008, -0/+5VisualHub and iSquint are still tops for me, even if they aren't being actively developed anymore as of three (?) days ago.
- Tubilakken, on 10/06/2008, -0/+4yeah I can't download the program ? help
- b0rg, on 10/06/2008, -0/+4What's the issue with it?

When I need to convert a video I use "WinFF" ...
It's very easy to use and I believe it is better than other programs.... - InspectorGadget, on 10/06/2008, -0/+4Mediacoder violates the licenses of several pieces of software that the developer distributes as binaries with Mediacoder bundles, among them Nero's (free) AAC encoder and ffmpeg. SUPER at one point was Java-based, but I'm not sure whether it still is.
My votes:
DVD Encoding: DVD Decrypter (IFO Mode) -> MeGUI (H.264/AC3/AAC-HE commentary/SRT subs/MKV)
Blu-ray Encoding: DVDFab HD Decrypter -> TsMuxeR -> MeGUI (H.264/AC3/AAC-HE commentary/SRT subs/MKV)
General conversion, cutting and splitting: Avidemux. - ShadowofAres, on 10/06/2008, -0/+3Yes, although I've only been able to do it chapter-by-chapter. But I've only done it a few times.
- sakibomb222, on 10/06/2008, -0/+3I find all the best media converters in the mail.
- haldir2012, on 10/06/2008, -0/+3Because you don't always play video from your computer. I like to go through DVD seasons of House and Firefly when I'm at the gym, so I use DVD Decrypter to rip the DVD and Handbrake to convert it to iPod format. Works like a charm, and completely free.
- inactive, on 10/06/2008, -1/+4Magic Converter is really user friendly and has a lot of formats to convert including AVI, MPEG4
- diecastbeatdown, on 10/06/2008, -0/+3xvid4psp and handbrake are quality apps.
they're all mostly frontends to ffmpeg anyways. - picpak, on 10/06/2008, -0/+2http://media-convert.com/
- Metalcard, on 10/06/2008, -0/+2SUPER website says that it should run on 64 bit, but they dont guarantee it.
- wopbobaloobop, on 10/06/2008, -0/+2WinAvi, just used it the other day.
http://www.winavi.com/en/video-converter/video-con ... - llamarama7, on 10/06/2008, -0/+2I agree, ffmpeg is a great one, though it was a real pain to get started with it.
- werries, on 10/06/2008, -0/+2Because it costs money for more than 100mb.
thats why. - drewfusb, on 10/06/2008, -1/+3i modded my old xbox to xbmc and lost all need to do any conversion. of course, modding xboxes can be a pain. when this port is done for win/mac/linux, the need for this will go the way of the dodo, imho.

- mattcoady, on 10/06/2008, -0/+2Staxrip has always been one of my favorites. It's open source and free. It's easy to use and fully featured.
http://www.planetdvb.net/staxrip/ - moocow1452, on 10/06/2008, -0/+2I think it's the first time Dr. Horrible made the front page of Digg.
- tito13kfm, on 10/06/2008, -0/+2mencoder and meGUI deserve to be at least honorable mentions. Otherwise a good list.
- Chiko, on 10/06/2008, -0/+2For converting avi's to dvd i use ConvertXtoDvd.
If your main concern is quality this does the best within reasonable time.
I tried almost all the most popular converters and this is my favorite. - juicycutlets, on 10/06/2008, -0/+2WinFF is excellent.
- Aloyarc, on 10/06/2008, -2/+4cuando necesito convertar un video yo me uso el 'WinFF' ...
es mucho facil y creo que es mas bueno que otros programas.... - Asianwaste, on 10/06/2008, -0/+2Zoomplayer works great too.
- roxgod666, on 10/06/2008, -0/+2I find all the best media converters online
try http://www.mediaconverter.org/
or http://keepvid.com/ - yeahaboutthat, on 10/06/2008, -0/+2Does anyone know whether all or some of these runs on a vista 64 bit system? Descriptions are lacking beyond basic platform, and I really need a good converter for my new Pavilion
- Metalcard, on 10/06/2008, -1/+3Link to download SUPER since the site is a mess: http://www.erightsoft.biz/GetFile.php?SUPERsetup.e ...
SUPER is great, it converts anything I throw at it. - yeahaboutthat, on 10/06/2008, -0/+1Thanks both of you
