"This is 2 you moron." - OrganicDeb, on 03/06/2009, -0/+51This is one of those times I wish I had a time machine...
- AlmightyCushion, on 03/06/2009, -0/+49"IBM did not get its www.ibm.com domain until 1986, some 90+ years after first coming into existence."
I imagine it was a little hard to get a domain name back in 1896 so that's probably why they waited 90 years or so. - thedcam, on 03/06/2009, -1/+50porn.com isn't there, shocking.
- UberNick, on 03/06/2009, -0/+45Some friends of mine tried to register "*****.com" in the early 90's. An Internic admin said "we can't have obscene things on the internet! Absolutely not."
- Shambla, on 03/06/2009, -0/+44Symbolics Marketing Director: Guys, now that we're on the tubes, we need a logo.
Marketing Grunt 1: Well I'm pretty good at shapes...I could draw a triangle, a circle, and a square or something... - filemeaway, on 03/06/2009, -0/+33Adobe was a company then, they developed Illustrator 1.0 in 1986, released it in '87.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adobe_Illustrator - infermon, on 03/06/2009, -0/+32I wish we could find that admin now, and show him 4chan
- avianeddy, on 03/06/2009, -0/+29DAMN Symbolics, get updated already!
- PeterNorton, on 03/06/2009, -5/+32Fascinating!
- PhonicUK, on 03/06/2009, -3/+27If I see this on Digg too many more times, I'm going to be able to recite this list from memory...
- SpykerSpeed, on 03/06/2009, -1/+25I was looking at brightly colored shapes and burping up my lunch. Much like I do today.
- darylspong, on 03/07/2009, -0/+23ALL GOING ACCORDING TO PLAN I'LL MATERIALISE HERE RIGHT HERE AT 11:37 AM ON SATURDAY. THIS IS JUST A COURTESY NOTE TO MAKE SURE YOU'RE NOT STANDING IN THIS SPOT AT THAT TIME. THINGS MIGHT GET QUITE MESSY IF YOU ARE. ALSO, I WON'T BE ARRIVING IN A DELOREAN, BE NAKED OR BE HALF MAN HALF FLY, THIS ISN'T THE MOVIES, YOU KNOW.
- jockc, on 03/06/2009, -1/+24There were no web pages in 1985, people.
- OhTheHumanity1, on 03/06/2009, -1/+24Equally as old!
- misternils, on 03/06/2009, -0/+22Adobe started in 1982
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adobe_Systems - peestandingup, on 03/06/2009, -1/+22And its down.
- calon9, on 03/07/2009, -1/+22I went online for the first time in 95. I bought some software a few months later and thought ordering stuff online was incredible; the future. A couple weeks later I started surfing porn....
there is no ending to this story. - ShooterMcGavin, on 03/06/2009, -0/+17Not the "first"... but pretty old, and hilarious:
http://web.archive.org/web/19961220153812/http://w ... - VegaObscura3, on 03/07/2009, -0/+16That domain name would be worth billions now.
- kevro, on 03/06/2009, -0/+16http://www.archive.org/web/web.php
now you do. - pathouston22, on 03/06/2009, -0/+15Stupidest comments:

3. ? - MasterGrief, on 03/07/2009, -0/+15-- CRAIG
- MarkusX, on 03/06/2009, -3/+18I didn't think Adobe existed in 1986 already, much less have a registered domain on the - what?, the... Internet?!
- marlinc, on 03/06/2009, -3/+17Sorry to sound pissy, but has anyone noticed that DIGG is becoming a webpage of lists? Are people really that edified by lists? Maybe it's just me.
- zydeco, on 03/06/2009, -0/+14And Telnet. And FTP. And gopher, for chrissakes! Get off my lawn!
- PeterNorton, on 03/06/2009, -1/+14I am not sure what I was doing in 1986. I certainly did not think about the Internet, much less about Adobe. Did we have those Nintendo portable consoles back then already?
- benderillo, on 03/06/2009, -6/+19God Bless Al Gore.
- foxmuldr, on 03/06/2009, -0/+12Big turning point in history. Lots of beginnings. And its interesting to see where they still rank in the top million websites. Looks like not many of the corporations made it. All of the schools are still there.
- dpcwarehouse, on 03/06/2009, -2/+14I remember getting my first modem- it was for a Commodore 64 around 1984-1985. I could use it to surf the net for 6.95 a minute lol. We've come a long way but isn't it interesting that those companies alreadynew that having a web presence was going to be important!
- inactive, on 03/06/2009, -0/+10No. There was no web back then. Those companies have domains for business-to-business purposes, similar to a credit card processing network. It was for infrastructure, not commercial or PR purposes.
And if you really don't believe me, just look at CompuServe or AOL and how they both used keywords and tried to establish their own directories. More businesses were on AOL than had domain names, because AOL was consumer-friendly. Domain names and IP addresses were too technical at the time, and still are to quite a few people. - darthvalium, on 03/07/2009, -0/+8actually google doesn't index all the websites in existence.
- snowshoeless, on 03/07/2009, -0/+8symbolics is probably completely confused why they suddenly have a huge spike in network traffic
- flyingclutchman, on 03/07/2009, -0/+8billions? how can you put a price on something like *****.com
- mrrivera, on 03/06/2009, -0/+7did too!
- jcc6655, on 03/06/2009, -0/+7I do think digg is a bit list happy. This list however IS pretty cool.
- roebeet, on 03/06/2009, -0/+7Microsoft was very late to the game. No built-in IP stack in the 3.x days (they had an add-on, later). Ah, the days of Trumpet Winsock.
- stix213, on 03/06/2009, -0/+7symbolics.com still looks like the oldest website as well.
- ModernGeek, on 03/07/2009, -0/+6Subnets/IP Blocks were also free, my dad used to own a Class A back in the day. Back then, getting a domain was as simple as a, "Hey, add me to the hosts list!"
- Meyithi, on 03/07/2009, -0/+6And how many times has this been dugg in the last 12 months and hit the front page now? 3? 4?
Should change the name Digg to Dejavu. - angrykeyboarder, on 03/07/2009, -0/+6The "Web" didn't exist exist for the average Joe until 1992.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_World_ ... - Halfempty, on 03/06/2009, -0/+6Seeing those old sites I think.. damn, if ONLY I added a slight gradient and a link to "add comment" I would've been the father of 2.0
- chumscrubber, on 03/07/2009, -0/+6They're thinking it's the "MACSYMA upgrade special offer".
- Solstice, on 03/06/2009, -1/+7I think that it's kind of interesting the Microsoft isn't up there. This is another indication of just how far they were behind in embracing the internet.
- allfatherblack, on 03/06/2009, -3/+9Adobe was #42. THAT explains their success
- TJSnodgrass, on 03/06/2009, -0/+6Spoiler Alert
- Kyan, on 03/07/2009, -2/+8I guess people burying you don't know 42 is the answer to the life, the universe and everything.
