- carbbomb, on 09/04/2008, -1/+50September is officially now Googtember.
- efl14, on 09/04/2008, -6/+48I ♥ Google
..ok that was gay - TheClassic, on 09/04/2008, -2/+33Inaccurate headline, Picasa Web Albums has name tagging, Picasa 3 does not.
- crombenevolant, on 09/04/2008, -1/+19If google really wants to make Picasa better, eliminate the 1GB limit. Of course they will allow you to pay for more space, but if you can afford to give me 7GB for email for free, why am I limited at 1GB for pics? If nothing else let it grow over time like gmail did. With a 10mp point and click it does not take very long to fill a gig.
- Mithivh, on 09/04/2008, -13/+29Mac OS X version please
- Oztog, on 09/04/2008, -1/+15Yes, it was.
- Avian00, on 09/04/2008, -2/+14Even the people at Ars are begging for a Mac version! Why the silent treatment, Google?
- neomits, on 09/04/2008, -0/+9The photo preview windows integration alone makes it worth installing. This is what Vista should have had.
- rjinswand, on 09/04/2008, -1/+8i really think that facebook should try to implement some sort of auto-tagging feature... just my 2c
- minorgods, on 09/05/2008, -0/+7I Tried this out yesterday and was shocked at some of the results. At first sight of my daughter, it asked if it was her mom or her brother (freaky), but after tagging her, proceeded to locate her accurately about 80 more times with zero effort (easily spanning about a 6 year time span). The recognition even picked my parents faces out of a portrait hanging on a wall behind a pic of another family member! My only wish is that there was a way to sync the face info back into my local app (would make it a bit more personal), and share unpublished content to select people (the way docs does).
All that aside, FREAKIN' SLICK. - salmonmoose, on 09/05/2008, -0/+6because 7 gigs of email compresses a LOT better than 7gigs of already compressed images.
- mV0G7, on 09/04/2008, -4/+10Oh boy. And I thought my day couldn't get more exciting.
- stoanhart, on 09/04/2008, -4/+9It is native. Winelibs is the Win32 API implemented natively for Linux. When you compile a program with winelibs, it is a native Linux program. Wine is NOT running while you run Picassa.
Maybe what you mean is they should use a "traditional" linux graphical toolkit like QT. - darkNiGHTS, on 09/05/2008, -0/+5They might offer 7GB of storage space on GMail, but how much space is the average person using up? On the other hand with pictures, 7GB would get filled in no time.
- estvir, on 09/04/2008, -11/+15Pfft, use your glorious iLife apps.
- Mononuclear, on 09/04/2008, -0/+4Yeah I don't use the web album. I was really hoping that the desktop app had facial tagging so I could search for people in pictures on my HDD.
- donsherio, on 09/05/2008, -0/+4At least you have Picasa for Linux... there's nothing for Mac.
- mdoom, on 09/04/2008, -0/+4Good idea..but more people would spend time removing tags from photos they don't want tagged
But when you upload a lot of photos, sure would make it a lot easier to tag your friends. takes awhile otherwise - donsherio, on 09/05/2008, -0/+3YEAH! Im actually glad Ars added that lil blurb about the Mac version. At least it shows OTHER people are wanting this too!
- Daniel591992, on 09/04/2008, -1/+4iPhoto is useless for people who organize their pics using tons of sub-folders that go 3+ times deep.
- waynehoggett, on 09/05/2008, -0/+3HINT HINT!
- Daniel591992, on 09/04/2008, -0/+3Huh? Okay, go to folder manager, select what you want. I don't think it imports pics from a camera automatically. Plus, you can select the ones you want to import.
- tenio, on 09/04/2008, -1/+4http://apps.new.facebook.com/picasauploader/
A useful app that allows you to upload pics to facebook right from Picasa, works with 3 too.
[I didn't make this, just thought it was very cool and useful] - se7en11, on 09/05/2008, -0/+3I agree, but not for free. Flickr offers a one time fee for unlimited usage which I happily pay because I use it as a cheap way to backup my photos.
If Google, would offer a similar pricing plan, I would change today. But they offer the same price Flickr wants for a whole year for just 7 GB of storage. (https://www.google.com/accounts/PurchaseStorage?hl ... - donsherio, on 09/05/2008, -0/+3Exactly. iPhoto is WAY different compared to Picasa. I don't like how iPhoto has to keep all of the photos in 1 special folder in 1 single location. I have been moving files around just to keep enough hard drive space open to do anything else and its ridiculous that I can't keep photos anywhere else. I have been waiting for Google to release its Mac version ever since the rumor got out... but this is ridiculous that its now September, and nothing, just a new version for windows...
- bluemist, on 09/05/2008, -0/+3"Sync to Web" will be revolutionary! This is true cloud computing at work. Some may never really appreciate this kind of power until you need to deal with thousands of photos and worry about duplicates, multiple photo edits, reuploads, etc.
- Mononuclear, on 09/04/2008, -0/+2Mine doesn't import anything from my camera until I tell it to. You can select the folders it monitors for new pictures. I only have my photos folder in there because I don't want my web design graphics and wallpapers etc in there.
- bl4k3r, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2Web Albums has name tagging, Picasa 3 has face recognition, though.
- leamanc, on 09/04/2008, -1/+3Linux version of 3.0 would be nice. I was all excited about the 3.0 announcement, but bummed to find we're stuck at 2.7.
- meetjal, on 09/04/2008, -0/+2i always love face, voice and fingerprint recognition systems... Hail Google!
- mapledell, on 09/04/2008, -1/+3I'd love to have face tagging in iPhoto.
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -1/+3It's true that there is Picasa for linux, but it's ugly because it runs on a modified version of Wine. WE WANT NATIVE PICASA NATIVE TO LINUX! :(
- MaxMWood, on 09/04/2008, -3/+5The thing I hate about Picasa is the way it automatically imports my new photos everytime I use it when really I just want to import the 30 I just took on my camera, but you cant add a file/folder while its searching your PC. Is it just me or does anyone else find this incredibly annoying?
- jorisb, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2quit your wining
- BrainCore, on 09/27/2008, -0/+1and now there is!
http://www.new.facebook.com/apps/application.php?i ... - ivantalboys, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1I have a free Flickr account and they will only show your 200 most recent uploaded pictures.
- cLamm, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1not gay if the balls don't touch
- Avian00, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1Yes. That makes sense. Mac users only use the software that comes with their system. Nothing else. That must be what Apple means by, "it just works." What an insightful conclusion. I'm sure the millions of incredibly satisfied Mac users would be the first to say they feel their freedom is limited by their Mac. (sorry if the sarcasm isn't obvious enough)
But getting to the point, the only time "freedom" really exists is when I can use the software I love on the operating system I love. Google isn't obligated to make a Mac port, and iPhoto is still a good option. But it would be incredibly nice of them to finally port it to the Mac. If only to give Apple some competition to keep improving iPhoto. - relentless1914, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1But the difference is that flickr is free for unlimited photos. They limit uploads to 200MB/month for the free account, (and only 3 sets). Once you get the pro account, you have unlimited storage.unlimited uploads/unlimited sets and collections.
Picasa has a long way to go to match that offering... :( - Spoomeister, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1The first person to incorporate the face tagging feature into a malicious virus / worm is going to do some serious, and hilarious, damage.
- Calslim, on 09/08/2008, -0/+1I always resize the images before uploading and I limit them to between 150 and 300 KB. That way it will take a long time to fill out my allotted space. Upload your originals and watch your space dwindle fast! If they need to see those, there are other services that offer larger or unlimited uploads for free.
- Tenoq, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1Now all we need is decent upload bandwidth.
My 256kbps isn't going to cut the mustard, Mr Rudd. I'd like your National Broadband Plan about now, kthx. :p - Tenoq, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1Psst - Lightroom costs $300 more than Picasa. :p
- Mizzike, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1won't you please show your support with a green thumbs up?
- ptFoe, on 09/05/2008, -2/+3go use iPhoto
- aliguana, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1the face-tagging thing is scary, but very cool. The big reason for the upgrade, for me, is the Windows preview, which - if it was just a product on its own - would be worth paying for. Fantastic.
- mrBitch, on 09/05/2008, -1/+2RE: " If you want the freedom to download and use all types of software, get a PC. "
But if I get a PC, I am NOT able to have the freedom to use all types of software -- there is just so much software out there BETTER than their PC counter-parts. - SonicNirvana, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1I'll say it, I'm gay for Google.
- mrBitch, on 09/05/2008, -1/+2I don't know what version of iPhoto you are using, but mine sorts photo sets into "events", and when I plug in my camera it automatically creates "events" sets based on the dates the pictures were taken.
- BradMurray, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1If you've used Riya enough you would suspect like I do that Google has bought or licensed the technology. It has the exact same quirks and interfaces.
