- RuslanZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4All incoming calls to mobiles in Europe and many other civilized countries are FREE, which makes the application quite useful. I think US .gov should do something about the cell market monopoly.
- machambi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I tried it and am using it now. you need a gprs (data) plan with your service provider. i use the t-zones (5.99) plan with t-mobile and it works great. the IM is free.
for phone calls, the service actually rings back to your number and thats charged at .02 cents a minute. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3For those of us with limited minutes but unlimited data plans (Sidekick et al) it might be pretty cool.
- dlichteman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Gtalk works great on this. Thats what Im gonna use it for!
- akira117, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Anyone try it?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3If you dont understand how VoIP works read my site for a quick overview (no not spamming - just making sure people fundamentally understand what VoIP is and why its becoming more popular)
VoIP:

With the appropriate implimentation of traffic engineering based on the QoS parameters among other things, this is what I suggested in another digg article.
In that article I mentioned that I would really love to see the day where we had mobile wireless VoIP. It will truly be amazing.
Just think of the integrated and unified communication potential. it would take smart phones to a whole new level!
It be freggin sweet! - Baorc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah I don't see how you aren't going to be using your existing cell service to connect to the internet to make the VOIP call...
- samgonzales, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is alot like www.minowireless.com or www.talkplus.com - its not really that cost effective unless you are making intl calls where it wouldnt get charged as an intl call..
I dont use these anymore..due to the fact that you have to enter the contacts again..since it doesnt get them off your address book.. www.truphone.com which is a voip service works great on my e61over wifi - PommieZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I do this already with my Asterisk server at home. I have a service provider who charges me a low per-minute rate for incoming and outgoing calls (depending on the need) from Asterisk.
I call my Asterisk server, enter a passcode, enter the number I want to connect to. Then it hangs up on me, calls my cellphone back (free incoming calls ROCK), then puts me on hold while it connects the call.
All told? $0.011/minute to call my cellphone, $0.011/minute anywhere in North America = $0.022/minute ... and I can be calling long distance, or cheap international rates. If I wanted to REALLY get spiffy, I could get my Asterisk a toll-free 800/866 number for $4.95 a month and $0.04/minute.
Phone companies (in general) are ripping the Average Joe off left/right/centre. - 3dom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1erm, I might be wrong here, but dont you need a wi-fi enabled phone for this? otherwise you're gonna have to make a regular call or a gprs connection at least, and it's not gonna be cost effective means of calling
- mmeads, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I installed it earlier today just to get gtalk on my phone.
- finite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"explore all features of VoIP" with callbacks over the cell network? LOL!
Two of the main reasons voip seems attractive to me are (1) because DSL and Cable are actually much more reliable than cell networks in many places, and (2) most people in the US pay absurd rates when they exceed their monthly cellular minute allotments (often more than $0.30/minute!).
These callbacks will still use up your cell minutes, while voip-over-unlimited-broadband is cheap or free. This integrated callbackvoip-chat program might be useful for some people, but the hype in the description is *****.
I digg gizmo project on nokia770 - jeffclark, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2...but why?
- GlassUser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nextel offers (or at least used to offer) unlimited incoming minutes. It would have been killer with this.
- zeero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hooray stick it to cell carriers
- RuslanZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And you also can make voice calls to MSN/Live Messenger users!
- skinnydips, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0check out www.globedialer.com - and you don't have to deal with call back!
- kamilX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2This is spam. Calls that aren't going through a jabber compatible client can cost between $0.02 and $0.06 cents within just the USA...
Read the FAQ, it links to: http://www.gtalk2voip.com/rates_public.cgi - joeczech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0iskoot does same for Skype. So far for free to download. Java applet.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"I mentioned that I would really love to see the day where we had mobile wireless VoIP. It will truly be amazing. "
Id love to see the day when... in case you missed that point the first time you illiterate jackass. - finite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This hardly qualifies "wireless voip", as the wireless connection (from the cell tower to the cell phone) is not "over IP" at all.
