- LordSkywalker, on 03/19/2009, -3/+24Anyone dumb enough to try it out? I wouldn't trust em for privacy or reliability.
- danwallace, on 03/19/2009, -2/+20$50 for 25 gigs for one year? Pass.
- angusm, on 03/19/2009, -2/+14Given my recent experiences with Norton Antivirus, I wouldn't use a Symantec product to back up my worst enemy's data. Wait, what am I saying? Of course I would. And then I'd sit back and laugh and laugh as he tried to recover his files.
- Hercules, on 03/19/2009, -2/+14Is it as slow and overpriced as the rest of their software?
I'll pass. - inactive, on 03/19/2009, -1/+13Its ok, but I'd rather purchase cheap storage and keep my important stuff with me.
I have the feeling that stories with titles like "Company XYZ data center compromised, thousands of customers affected," will pop up in the next few years. - ekboost, on 03/19/2009, -1/+10Use Dropbox, haven't had an issue yet.
- MCA2142, on 03/19/2009, -1/+10http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/12325/dropbox.png
- llopez1223, on 03/19/2009, -4/+12Doesn't Symantec take over your computer when you install one of their products willingly or unwillingly onto your computer?
- inactive, on 03/19/2009, -2/+8Ya like I need symantec to erase my data and they found a False positive after they scanned it with their product
- Icetype, on 03/19/2009, -0/+6I had a 40 gig iPod like 6 years ago.
- divinediva, on 03/19/2009, -2/+7Symantec is using the 128-bit AES encryption algorithm to protect data.
- liquisoft, on 03/19/2009, -1/+6I bet it's slow.
All symantec products are. - maverickapollo, on 03/19/2009, -1/+6Jungledisk, using Rackspace Cloudfiles = 15 cents per gigabyte. No other charges.
- crilen007, on 03/19/2009, -0/+5No, we can't actually.
- crilen007, on 03/19/2009, -0/+5Symantec is actually more like AIG, they take your money and ...
- motters, on 03/19/2009, -2/+6Beware of putting your data into other people's hands. In a recession clouds can evaporate without warning.
- inactive, on 03/19/2009, -2/+6and that is AFTER you buy software from them! So it really is more than $50
Others are way cheaper - danwallace, on 03/19/2009, -0/+4I'm complaining that it costs too much money for what you get, not that it costs money at all. Idiot.
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 03/19/2009, -0/+3We're not going to give Symantec another chance...ever. Most of us in the pro IT sector wouldn't use anything by them even it got the best reviews ever and was free. They've ruined millions of computers over the past decade. This is just karma.
- inactive, on 03/19/2009, -2/+5I think a backup HDD or a NAS solution is a much better idea.
- inactive, on 03/19/2009, -1/+4If my house blows up, I have more pressing issues I think. And 25GB is not much in an era when people routinely have TB's of HDD space.
- dickeytk, on 03/19/2009, -0/+3So does dropbox, but dropbox is free, unlimited computers, and is cross platform
- inactive, on 03/19/2009, -0/+2Carbonite is one (does Linux as well as Windows)
Mozy is another (doesn't do Linux)
Spideroak (I know it does Lin, not sure about Win)
I am not saying they are cheaper as I can't view the sites at the moment, but what you get for your $$ - jrtcs, on 03/19/2009, -1/+3No matter what the capacity, there are only 2 kinds of hard drives. The ones that have failed, and the ones that will fail.
- byronm, on 03/19/2009, -1/+3What others are way cheaper? What other services offer 5 pcs and 25gb of space with a backup software and online repository access? Please explain (as i am shopping around for this type of service)
- billraydrums, on 03/19/2009, -4/+6Norton huh. Think I'll pass.
- byronm, on 03/19/2009, -0/+2Jungle disk looks good but i assume its .15gb/month which is 45/year plus for the software i need to automate it to make it wife and child proof it looks like another 12.00/year.
How reliable is rackspace backup vs amazon? The s3 option is more expensive but i know s3 has several years of history behind it. - mithrasinvictus, on 03/19/2009, -1/+3I'll gladly pay extra to not have to use a symantec product.
- foshizol, on 03/19/2009, -0/+2Maybe it will slow down the internet as much as it slows down individual computers.
- evergrim, on 03/20/2009, -0/+2***** Symantec ... pifts.exe ... never forget.
- maverickapollo, on 03/19/2009, -2/+4Erm, no its not.
- crilen007, on 03/19/2009, -0/+2Who is digging these people down...
- nextekcarl, on 03/19/2009, -0/+1Well, 25 GB on Rackspace Cloud Files would be $45 per year, plus you pay for bandwidth up and down.
http://www.mosso.com/pricingfiles.jsp
That doesn't sound too bad, but it isn't as great a deal as it sounds at first. I'd still prefer to pay for Dropbox (if I needed that much space) for $99/year for 50 GB and a nice, easy interface that works on Windows, Mac, and Linux (which is really important for me) and no charge for bandwidth. - danwallace, on 03/20/2009, -0/+1For 25 lousy gigs? Yeah..
- SystemHasFailed, on 03/20/2009, -0/+1Hey Symantec.. here's an idea. Why not ship a virus scanner that doesn't slow my machine to a crawl? THERE is a product offering for ya!
- crilen007, on 03/19/2009, -0/+1Yes
- crilen007, on 03/19/2009, -1/+2Why is maverick dugg down?
- inactive, on 03/19/2009, -1/+2in 2012 it will become sentient
- DuckSoup1, on 03/19/2009, -2/+325GB is more than enough for the adverage users documents or pictures.
- prodigitalson, on 03/20/2009, -0/+1What software? It mounts like a network drive... drag and drop. And if you want automated stuff there are plenty of open source backup solutions. Hell you could even use the backup tool in windows i would think.
- DuckSoup1, on 03/19/2009, -4/+5Unwillingly? Something tells me you don't read the TOS when installing their Anti-Virus software. And no not all of their software is like that.
Way to judge a company by a single product. - Philogos, on 03/20/2009, -0/+1Symantec's latest software is much faster than previous imo. norton internet security 2009 is working well for me
- DuckSoup1, on 03/19/2009, -0/+1Yeah show me a 500MB Word document on the adverage users computer.
- wynbennett, on 03/19/2009, -2/+3All of you are knocking old Symantec products, that were much like most antivirus programs; slow. However, Norton Internet Security 2009 was a complete code rewrite and is currently getting the best reviews of any antivirus ever. It is certainly the fastest one I have ever used. I think it's a bit harsh to be judging their new products before you have even used them.
- findhostcoupons, on 03/22/2009, -0/+1Good story Lucas and an interesting news!
- 4321234, on 03/19/2009, -0/+1I back up all my critical data on a floppy.
- n00bcake, on 03/19/2009, -0/+1tsk tsk symantec. its sad they resort to virus tactics, getting their crap installed on your system, also the rootkit properties of their programs.
cant get rid of this norton security scanner that i never installed. comes back whenever i reboot.
stay far far away from any of their products. - Philogos, on 03/20/2009, -0/+1try the norton removal tool.
ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe - n00bcake, on 03/19/2009, -0/+1or the TOS when installing something entirely different. they tend to sneak their bollox programs in during other installations.
- prodigitalson, on 03/20/2009, -0/+125GB is not anywhere near enough. I have more music than that, my local SVN Repo is currently 10GB (although thats mirrored to my hosted box), and my Version Que repo is in at about 120GB. And then you have all my other stuff...
Granted you did qualify with "average user" and i dont think that includes me... but as more and more people start importing their home videos and taking more and more digital pictures it gets to be more and more pricey. Not to mention if they actually want to back up their music. -
