- alext514, on 10/12/2007, -1/+41neat site. Clever way to de-costanza your wallet
- XStatic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29Someone posted a shopper number once to get people to use it across the country and confuse the store. I registered it on Upromise and still get cash back from people using it...

I remember a time when you weren't on digg. Does that make me better? - dezertrat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14....unless the cashier's name is jenny
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Don't use tin foil. That amplifies the signal so they can get to you easier.
Aluminum foil scatters the signal.
The More You Know! - rhesuspieces00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13no, don't dig him down. you really shouldn't carry your wallet in your back pockets. years of sitting on it drastically increases the likelihood you will need a hip replacement when you get old.
thats why i'm bummed cargo pants have gone out of style. form follows function! - fsjws4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Or don't carry barcodes at all. For the stores that take a phone number instead, I just give them "(local area code) eight sixty-seven fifty-three zero nine". It's worked at every store I've tried it at, and so far nobody's caught it.
- dallashigh, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Anyone remember when this was called a FORM, not a "Web app"?
- figz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Do you think there's any risk in sending your numbers to this site? Not sure what damage someone could do with my supermarket card.... Probably just being paranoid.
- dreamlayers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12They could buy things they needed for some crime or terrorist attack and you could be blamed. (This is probably excessively paranoid.)
- Tr3vor, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13incredibly usefull, thanks man
- rhesuspieces00, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10but you can't use the aluminum foil sold at the grocery stores. it has millions of brain wave transducers embedded in it.
you have to mine your own aluminum and make your foil from that. - kutza, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11I prefer to not carry any cards, and give them a fake phone number each time so they can't track my purchases, and tie up their system with excess useless data for making me wait while they enter the info :). I'm sure the advertisers they sell to love people like me.
- AceTracer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Uh, no. Though the markup for forms are written in HTML, but the action that is taken is done in an different language. Even the simplest form elements rely on some kind of server-side (PHP, Perl, Python, etc) or client-side script. So yes, it's perfectly correct to call this a form.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10At first I thought you were just paranoid... then I realized that all the commenters joined digg on average less than a month ago.
- troydoogle7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7At first I thought you were paranoid.... then I became paranoid.... Now I don't know what to believe....
Wheres my tinfoil hat... - danhillmoses, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7You have to pay to be a member of Costco, manfrin. That is part of the reason as to why big bulk stores like them have good prices.
- daveman692, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8What is being stolen? The ability to screw up demographic data when buying groceries?
- NascarShizzle, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9My ass was beginning to hurt with all those cards in my wallet. Thanks!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The barcode/numbers alone are completely useless. You'd have to have access to the store member database to do anything.
- krinn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@XStatic
This one?
http://www.cockeyed.com/pranks/safeway/ultimate_shopper.html - greganalytic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Tomarocco, could you email the stores that are giving you trouble with the validation? Email is on the website. Sometimes these stores put out different versions of their cards using different barcode formats.
- ldkronos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It doesnt need to be all grocery stores.
2 grocery stores, 2 pet supply stores, 2 pharmacies, hallmark, an art supply store and best buy. Thats 9 for me. - kutza, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12Actually, if you knew ANYTHING about web development or server side scripting/programming, you would see the URL ends in .py, meaning it's a python page. A simple form on the other hand is basic html. By definition, this page IS a web app, as it is most likely compiled python (same as java or C).
In other words...
You fail at the internet :). - greganalytic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Works fine for me. I usually have to cover up all but the barcode I want scanned with my fingers. Version 2.0 of the site will have a "sheath" so you can slide a little window to only the barcode you want. Ah someday.
- bob645, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4eight six seven five three oh nah-eeh-ah-ine. Works all the time for me. (480) area code anyway.
Also, you know those self checkout lanes? I've used other stores discount cards at the wrong store and they work too. Makes you wonder where all this data links to. - bonky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@RoboRay:
Nope, there's a big sign that says "Members only" on Costco gas pumps. It's part of the reason why you're able to get gas at often .10-.15 cents/gallon cheaper than any other gas station in town, because if you're getting gas there, you've paid your membership dues.
The pumps won't run without a Costco card being swiped. and the attendants don't have a "spare" you can use. I've tried, when my card got left at home, I was just plain outta luck. - cozinator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4A simpler solution: when they ask for your club card, just say you forgot it. Nine times out of ten, the store will have a club card by the register that they'll scan in for you. (I just did this at Safeway tonight.)
- mrgreen4242, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I didn't realize people actually called these things "loyalty cards". That sounds to much like ... I dunno ... a political party ID card or something like that. I call them discount cards, but I don't have any of them unless they are explicitly cash back programs - stores like Kroger that have a discount price on items on the the shelf will scan a "store card" for you most of the time if you ask.
- fogster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The "phone number thing"? One of the few ways around the Do Not Call list is if the company has done business with you in the past 18 (?) months. It's always seemed to me like that's *why* they ask for your number--because they're then allowed to start phone solicitations to you even if you're on the DNC.
- jriggall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hilarious Jim Gaffigan:
“Are you a member of our secret club?”
“Uh, I’m just getting Doritos.”
"Well that will be $5,000... or you can join our club."
“I can’t come to a lot of meetings, but I guess I’ll join.” - rhesuspieces00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3don't let us stop you.
- RoboRay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Note that due to various laws, you do NOT have to be a member of Costco, BJ's, etc to buy alcohol or use their pharmacy. I think you can use the gas-pumps without a membership too, but I'm not 100% on that.
- InvisionUK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's a very nice idea but as I was happily looking at the site, it clicked. Here in the UK at least, 9 out of 10 "clubcards" use magnetic strips or the smartchips (I know Boots do), so obviously these can't all be popped onto the one card.
In fact, I can only think of one store that does use barcodes, off the top of my head, and that's Somerfield. And they actually stopped their loyalty card scheme a while ago now. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Some stores don't take away the privacy tax (It's not a discount. They simply charge you more for not giving them your personal info) right away. Fred Meyer and Best Buy, for example, send you a coupon in the mail.
- hcjake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I know most of the grocery stores around here do. I work customer service at one and when you get the card from our store, we actually give you a separate little bar code you can stick on anything, so you don't need to carry the actual card with you.
- krinn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you know some working numbers, feel free to post them...
- PimpinOnWelfare, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@XStatic
That is pure genius. - lazyrussian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Too bad for you. This is great. I just took four cards out fo my wallet and replaced it one very useful piece of paper :)
genius idea! - Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2omnicardr?
- quanta88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The consultants who pitched the cards probably called them "loyalty cards"...but as a customer, it's really a discount card to me.
- ooOOjaXedOOoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Check out this barcode/upc generator if you want to make your own cards on a sheet of paper or something:
http://jaxed.com/barcode - Skurt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Pffft... I keep the cards in the compartment between the seats of the car and when I go to that store I pull the correct one out. Don't have that crap in my wallet.
As far as privacy, I've never filled out the forms for the cards, when I got my cards all I did was ask for the form, it has the card stuck to it, I pulled the card off and threw the form away, I still get the discount, and they don't get my data. - dasilva333, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It would be nice if the bar code would be thinner, and the orientation would be landspace, also if instead of having preset stores, just allow a blank text box to input the store's name. Finally (now this may be a hard one to ask for) but if you could put a logo next to each store's name on the card and make it look more 'official' that would be awsome.
Ps. You forgot to add YMCA - tomarocco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1His validation is all screwed up. My cards don't match.
- noripcord7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No Wegmans?
- redrighthand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I used to snip the UPC's off of all my cards and tape them together this would provide a usefull replacement. Ever since they started doing the "phone number" thing I've done that and stopped carrying cards all together but the "swiper" was faster and easier in many ways.
- fishbert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2better to just ask them to use the courtesy card at the register...
signing up for these cards in the first place is stupid. - ntrsfrml, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Multipass!
- DerProfi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@bonky
A few years back Costco gas pumps didn't require a double swipe (Costco card + credit card). All you had to do was swipe your credit card (I'm pretty sure they only took American Express.) They eventually caught on and put the current system in place. -
