- Azimuth1, on 10/11/2007, -4/+30Why would you do that when you can just use a mouse and not have to remember tons of *****?
- Godlesswanderer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14For lazy days, all you need is to press Alt+Shift+X.
That's the random article shortcut by the way. - dtd00d, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14Ugh do you know how many times I needed to hit [tab] to reply to you?
- Idgit, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Another step on the road toward one handed web surfing. One day soon all our dreams will become a reality.
- trogdoor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6It's like the vi of encyclopedias.
- Traise, on 10/11/2007, -7/+13How lazy are we getting?
- fyrehart, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I had to hit [Tab] 73 times to get into the reply box + 2 to submit the comment.
I also had to hit [Shift-Enter] twice.
Yes, I am that bored. - sam991, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6It worries me that you would want to surf Wikipedia one handed. What's next, dictionary.com porn?
- kevets, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5This is a great accomplishment for those with limited hand control or who are blind and have to use voice command software to browse the web.
- bhowell, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5It's not laziness, it's efficiency. As with all keyboard accelerators, the purpose is to give frequent users a faster way to do things they do often.
- hobophobe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4"using nothing but your keyboard"
Okay, so we know what you mean. Still, the literal meaning is some guy sitting naked in the woods with just the keyboard and he's able to access Wikipedia. Wake me up when _that_ is possible. - dougbarrett, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4here is some useless information for you all.
if you have a MySpace (reserver your judgement) when you are browsing your friends pictures, you can press the left or right keys (only tested in Firefox 2 for Windows) to go from picture to picture. - viewdrix, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Is it really worth it to memorize all of these? I mean, it's not even like they assigned letters. A period to open your user page?
- antdude, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Lazy? Our fingers have to do extra work!
- ryannerd, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3What would you do with your other hand :-)
- Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I prefer shift + arrow keys
- Leevi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Apparently if you use Firefox or IE you should memorize them, but Opera shows a list of those shortcuts when you press Shift+Esc and it looks like this http://koti.mbnet.fi/leevi/kuvat/wikipedia_shortcuts.png
- TruthinessSpy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The author of that comment is "Jordan Meeter".
Your reply is to user "jmeeter".
I'm willing to bet they're both the same person. - Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Not to sound like ye olde standard Opera fanboy but...
...Opera already offers very nice keyboard-only surfing features, and they seem much more consistent than what this post describes. - jordan314, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Doesn't work in Safari for windows in any combination. :-/ Still VERY cool though!
- RoboPimp3000, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1But are you really going to be using these short cuts 80 times per minute? If these shortcuts work for you, that's great, but I suspect the savings in time over using a mouse to be much smaller than you think it is. In fact, I think it is pretty negligible.
- jordan314, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Did you try it? Tell me how many times you have to hit tab to go to recent changes as opposed to hitting alt control r.
- subxero37, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I figured it'd be an article about using Lynx/Links (which is a text-based browser...) but alas, I was wrong.
Lynx/Links are among my favorite tools when crap goes wrong and I have no other computers available. I think they're more valuable (by far) than remembering some Wikipedia keyboard shortcuts. - Cyberen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Isn't it called the TAB key?
- myFriendDerrik, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The first thing I do with a new Firefox install is turn on typeaheadfind in about:config. No more hitting ctrl+f. Just type what you're looking for immediately.
- yahoofrom, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1while reading the article i saw something that is shiny and round.
- Whammo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1In Windows you can do pretty much anything you want on your computer by just using the TAB, arrow and Windows keys. No news here.
- Spr0k3t, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2OMG! I just figured out how to use hotkeys< /blog>
lame. - zoom1928, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Because it is faster and more reliable. I can type about 80WPM which corresponds to about 8 key presses per second. How many different menu items can you click on per second with nealry 100% accuracy? Also, you don't waste time by moving your hands from the keyboard to the mouse then back to the keyboard. A bigger problem is if you're referring to something printed on paper or a whiteboard, you'll have to change your eye's focus from the work item to the screen then back in order to use the unproductive mouse. If you work on a computer for a living, using the mouse as little as possible is the best way to get work done quickly.
The only problem I have with Wikipedia is that they capture the F hotkey. In almost every browser (and GUI program for that matter) F is the hotkey for the File menu. It's annoying having Wiki capture and deny your attempt to open the most used menu. - Dochtuir, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Plus, it reduces the risk of an RSI from using the mouse too much.
- RoboPimp3000, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Your joke doesn't make any sense. You don't use two hands to use a mouse. And most of these keyboard shortcuts require both hands.
- airquotes, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Mac users are way more hotkey oriented than windows users, I assume they know this already. screw right clicking..u want system properties? pause/break + windows key. add/remove programs? windows key>r>control appwiz.cpl and so on.
- jordan314, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1These aren't OS hotkeys, they're javascript ones special to wikipedia. Did you RTFA?
- oprahsTITS, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3I can't get myself read the shortcuts on that page. The picture of the wanker in the right column is too distracting.
- navadasha, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Just use Opera and surf *ALL* sites with your keyboard. Use, Shift+Arrow keys, and Enter to follow links/buttons.
- airquotes, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1iida, ever stop to think maybe he was the submitter in both places?? haha
- wmuldoon, on 03/31/2009, -0/+0why the ***** would you use safari for windows? :-/ Not VERY cool.
- CaitSith4343, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2I know what I'll be doing with my free hand...
- jmeeter, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Maybe it's just me, but I think just clicking "History" is easier than hitting Alt+Shift+h.
- tallleah, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0you gotta love power using...
- resplence, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Do people really still "surf" the internet?
- WayOfTheIronPaw, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Testy testy.
- thejackamo, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1doesn't help that i have finals, either
- withoutashovel, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1yeahhh... i'll stick to my mouse thank you very much.
- Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Just get Opera -- as usual, it already has that functionality built in ;)
- Th3KidIsME, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0http://duggmirror.com/software/Surf_Wikipedia_using_nothing_but_your_keyboard/
- mastercheif, on 10/11/2007, -8/+3Too bad Wikipedia has been down today :(
