Support Open Source - Subscribe to Democracy
getdemocracy.com — An awesome way to support open-source software. Democracy Player is looking to get users to become 'subscribers' to help fund the software.

- bhorst, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13Democracy Player is a really useful application, GPL, and available on OS X, Linux and Windows. It's a great way to view many different video formats and to subscribe to video blogs and organize your own video library. Keep an eye on this software, it is growing quickly and well worth your support!
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8One feature I loved is it does full screen video. Quicktime only does fullscreen if you cough up $30 for the Pro version. That kinda ***** me off.
Then I picked up democracy, and I didn't care about stupid Quicktime anymore :) - mfearby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1$5 a month for a bloaty-app? I don't think so. Strip out the feature-overload and provide a slimmed-down version and I'll consider it...

- jeromeerome, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Democracy is really a great program and I have been using it since it first released a couple years ago. Like all beta software there are bugs and crashes on occasion but recent releases have become much more stable and powerful. I am anxiously awaiting the final release of the official Version 1.0
- Charbax, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19It's the best BitTorrent RSS, video-blog subscriber, multi-format playback, video search and channel guide software.
Well worth subscribing for 10$ per month so they can hire more programmers during the next few months, but I guess it could have been a good idea to let users subscribe and pay as little as 1$ per month or as much as 100$ per month or more depending on how much people can pay instead of fixing it at 10$.- dilema, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6Thats because it's the *only* BitTorrent RSS, video-blog subscriber, multi playback, video search channel guide software.
It's a ***** bittorent client. slowest and most unreliable client I've ever used, and I've used them all. It randomly stops downloading. Other times while "checking existing file" it never recovers and just stays in that state. It rarely if ever gets to a decent speed on even the healthiest torrents. On occasion pausing one torrent will cause all to pause then unpausing that torrent will cause all others to unpause. As far as a bittorent client goes, Democracy is pathetic at best.
Multi playback? huh? wha? Democracy's multimedai'a playback support (or lack there of) is second only to quicktime. It's codec suport is absolutely rechid.
Video search is horrendous. It's a cool concept but falls on it's face. When you go to YouTube you don't sit and wait for a video to load up 100%. That would be ass. Yet you praise Democracy for forcing you to just that? Now toss in an added step of having to delete that video that you had to download 100% of. You may say "wel that doesn't bother me" but you'd be full of ***** and we'd all know it.
Channel guide is nothing new. It's a glorified RSS feed. It's not even that good. It bogs down the application and makes it painful to start up. Yes this is on all machines and platforms. So don't you dare say "not mine". Again you'd be lying and we know it.
Now toss these buggy implementations of ***** and toss them in one single application. Yeah you have Democracy. Have you ever actually used Democracy? Or are you just an Open Source Whore?
I could go on and on about how god awful this app is but I'd get bored. - Markpdotcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have to agree with dilema... this whole post wreaks of spam! Democracy is slow, buggy and claims to do more than it actually does. VLC and azureus/utorrent still rule! :)
- dilema, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6Thats because it's the *only* BitTorrent RSS, video-blog subscriber, multi playback, video search channel guide software.

- skabber, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15I was about to give them money and be a subscriber but the site does not have an ssl cert. I am not putting my credit card into an unencrypted form. Going to https://www.getdemocracy.com/subscribe/ shows a ssl cert but returns a 404.

marked as spam. I know I'll get buried for saying so, but this is just a blatant "give us your money" advertisement.- stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -13/+5Buried as selfish jerk.

There's a bit of a difference. When you donate to FOSS projects, it benefits *everyone*. If I donate money, the improvements made with that money are available to you for free.

- bioknight, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5Hrm, interesting choice in name considering that GPL is kind of a communist/socialist concept.
- peritonlogon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Democracy just describes the way in which members of a society determine their fate.
Whereas Communism, Socialism and Capitalism describe the ways in which property and resources are distributed within the society.
Some might call it simply an "on paper" distinction, but it's not (however, the way governments title and describe themselves does muddy the watter, since their descriptions often bear little resemblance to their reality.) - bioknight, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2I knew that, its just that communism/socialism is usually paired with a dictatorship/totalitarian state, not a democracy.
Not that GPL based projects are particularly run by dictators =) - mournsanity, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The concept of democracy has nothing to do with the economic system a country decides to adopt, you brainless twit.
- jeromeerome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The "Democracy Player" name is about to change to Miro soon. They posted about this last week on their site.

- uptown, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Why not just stick with the metaphor, and call it a tax?
- pinab, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Well it isn't mandatory [insert argument about income taxes here].
- malcam, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Democracy Player's great. I use it a lot these days, just wish they'd give it a less political name. Politics is a turn off for real people, so imo the name will more than likely patronise - rather than entice - new users.
- adarkmethod, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1i'd love to use it, but its not installing on Ubuntu, despite saying its available, when i try to download it, it says the package isnt there.. if anyone wants to help me AIM is adarkmethod, i'd love to see what this is about as well
- Emerica, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I'm working on something kind of similar, tabbed browser, opml directory, videolan, irc chat.
Getting closer to a release, looking for a few people to help test out if anyone is interested.

Looking good. I have two big requests for you:
1) remember where you are in a video if you switch to another video (like Tivo)
2) make it work and look good on a standard def tv
#2 may not be doable in the direction you're going. But I'd love to have a good free media center that looked good on SDTV.
- illegalcortex, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@Emerica
- StarManta, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5When it's worth paying for, I'll donate.
Until then, it's buggy, and the UI, while pretty, sucks.- sancho, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I've never really been interested in trying Democracy Player, but I finally did today. You're right. It's buggy as hell. I can't get through a video without it freezing.
Disappointing, as I've generally heard good things about this, but for now, I don't think it's 'ready'. - illegalcortex, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@StarManta
Now I remember why I uninstalled it after trying it a few months back. I wish people would hold off on hyping it until it's at 1.0. Presumably, that would mean the bugs are few and far between.

I think you need a lesson on how to distinguish spam from legitimate content.
Just because I don't like you or think you're stupid doesn't make you spam.- geekee, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3"Just because I don't like you or think you're stupid doesn't make you spam."
Yes, but the fact that someone is selling it on Digg makes it Spam, or are charitable contributions a loophole for Spam on Digg.
- geekee, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3"Just because I don't like you or think you're stupid doesn't make you spam."
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Tried it, worked a few times and then videos play with just sound, reinstalled 3 different times doing clean installs for the diggnation videos and same problem.
- fishsoda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If only it wouldn't crash on startup under Ubuntu Feisty maybe I could actually use it again. :-(
- Fergy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You are, of course, running beta software. Please try again when Feisty is released.
- FlappinDiddiot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Takes an hour to load and then it takes an hour to load channels and then you might be able to play a video.
- Fergy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The first time you have to wait because it's often bittorrent. After that it will probably get the videos faster than you can watch them.
- macewan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'd like to see more groups do this.
- Fergy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The biggest problem I have with Democracy Player is that I don't have enough time to watch it. I love Diggnation Video, Frederator(cartoons), CommandN etc. Just look at all the stuff thats available for free(and legal) https://channelguide.participatoryculture.org/
- Jimtac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've never had any major technical problems with the player... I guess I'm just lucky there. But it's the variety of channels, or rather the lack there of, and the fact that the feeds that they have in there are not nearly as up to date as the actual feed itself, are things that are keeping me from keeping Democracy installed... Again maybe it's just me.
As it has been said here earlier, when it's worth paying for, I'll donate[/pay for it]. Maybe I'm the only one, but I find it hard to justify paying for "beta" software, beta has become an excuse to put out buggy, unfinished software, that most never intend on cleaning up, let alone finishing development on. I applaud the developers of the Democracy player for committing to it's development, but unless it's going to have a firm timetable for a final release, it's kind of hard to throw money their way. Any software that I've written never sees the light of day until it's ready. Beta's are fun to try, and who doesn't like the bragging rights of being the first of their group to discover something, but come on release a beta when it's close to being ready for prime time...
Alpha is the new Beta. - codeboost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like democracy, but as some have commented, it is very inefficient - it's slow, uses 120MB of RAM and well, I can't really use it much.
As an alternative, I'd recommend LiberTV, which was launched several days ago (www.libertv.tv) - it's still in Beta, but promises much - has a really cool interface, uses just 7 MB of RAM when in background and supports almost any format available. - phytonix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it's even more expensive than spanning sync
- koregaonpark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would, but I strongly oppose the name change to 'miro' or 'mira' or whatever. Dugg nonetheless!
- pledomobil, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Really good. Things like this happen everywhere.
