- PiGuy, on 01/30/2008, -10/+86Just what we need, more Flash websites.
- jggube, on 01/30/2008, -2/+48I beg to differ when you say teaching people HTML is useless by itself. At the very least, it's a great and easy starting point to get familiar with how web pages are rended by your browser. At the most, it allows you to hand-code pages from scratch.
My development is usually in Dreamweaver, with split view on, with the code view panel larger than the design view panel. Although Dreamweaver and other tools such as this are helpful in significantly speeding development time, using it without prior understanding of the markup will result in poorly-developed web pages. - Jyaif, on 01/30/2008, -0/+22Looks like someone has had a bitter experience with programmers...
- brayn80, on 01/30/2008, -1/+22Too bad they're in closed beta now.
- FirstDigg, on 01/30/2008, -3/+21I tried it out and its pretty cool. I created a very basic widget in just a couple of mins: http://firstdigg.blogspot.com/2008/01/sample-sprou ...
- MindTrigger, on 01/30/2008, -0/+16I agree, and it's also a "gateway drug" for learning real programming languages. I started off in HTML, anded up transitioning into ColdFusion, and now I am learning C#, C++, Java, and Python.
- TheKingInYellow, on 01/30/2008, -0/+15so people should stop using programmers altogether because it costs them time and money? this is how errors happen. so we can expect an outbreak of poorly coded flash based sites to spread across the internet? ok.
you use a designer for design. you use a programmer for programming. in my profession it's best to be really good at one thing rather than being mediocre at many things. i'm sure that concept transcends to other professions as well. you wouldn't go to a mechanic to get a website however many people do cut as many corners as possible when dealing with anything creative. if their teenager nephew has a bootlegged copy of CS3 chances are that kid will get the job (based on cost) over a freelance designer or agency. one thing i love to say to people when they turn down my services is "you get what you pay for" and it's true. - BingoPower, on 01/30/2008, -2/+17"HTML, which is pretty much useless by itself these days"
Sorry, but you're ***** retarded. - loginname, on 01/30/2008, -0/+14PBS will sue... http://www.sproutonline.com/sprout/home/default.as ...
- JimmyIkon, on 01/30/2008, -1/+13Google seems to like HTML over flash, and as long as that's the case it won't be useless.
- AirRaven, on 01/30/2008, -5/+16*Their.
*THEIR*, damnit! How is it so difficult to comprehend a difference that most people grasp in second grade? - acatzr800, on 01/30/2008, -0/+10Notepad for life!
Not really, DW CS3 for me, although with gobs of php, the design and split views are useless - redivider, on 01/30/2008, -1/+10Based on the description on their site, this Digg title and description is very innacurate.
It's not a WYSIWYG editor, it's more of a "widget" builder and it's certainly not gonna be the end of designers and programmers working together. But if it works as advertised it sounds like it could be pretty useful for what it does. - reecon, on 01/30/2008, -7/+16Woohoo! Web standards down the toilet! Yeah! Just make it all Flash!
/sarcasm - inactive, on 01/30/2008, -1/+9Hey, someone who knows nothing about web dev, and who actually admits they know nothing about web dev. Wow, I've never seen such a thing before.
http://www.w3schools.com/
Knock yourself out. ;) - inactive, on 01/30/2008, -3/+10Great that's just what we need, more flash turds splattered all over web pages. Thanks Sprout!
- FirstDigg, on 01/30/2008, -1/+8As of right now you can still try it out via http://sproutbuilder.com/techcrunch
- moktoipas, on 01/30/2008, -4/+11Ideal for people not too stupid to pay to use the real version of Flash.
- BlindingDawn, on 01/30/2008, -2/+8Very nice.. very nice.
- evanbooth, on 01/30/2008, -1/+7You wasted some perfectly good sarcasm for something that doesn't make sense. If everything was Flash, we would actually have web standards since it's a closed spec that can be built to be fully 508 compliant. I don't even know why I bother, you've probably been thrashing the "web standards" donkey since the 90s.
- Atomic1fire, on 01/30/2008, -0/+6Ideal for people not stupid enough to break the law
- inactive, on 01/30/2008, -0/+6I agree. I think tools like these just give people who know nothing about web design the idea that they know everything about web design. I have a couple friends from school who have MySpace accounts, and who seem to think that websites are made entirely with layout generators, from start to finish. Or they used to. I've 'enlightened' them. Actually, they're coming along quite well. They now know the difference between HTML and CSS, as well as some bare bones JavaScript. I have hope for them yet.
- leerayIG88, on 01/30/2008, -0/+6I like turtles.
- MrTankJump, on 01/30/2008, -2/+8I got in! Now if only I had the slightest ability for web design.
- flickrdoodle, on 01/30/2008, -0/+5"if you can't speak english properly you shouldn't be making websites. "
I live in South Texas and even I know the internet is not just for the English speaking.
Agreed, html understanding is always needed, but damn... "speak english properly??"
Sheeesh. - RoadWarriorX11, on 01/30/2008, -0/+5I had to digg you down because I think that is really arrogant of you to say, we all need to start somewhere.
- FirstDigg, on 01/30/2008, -0/+5There's a link in the story that gives invites to the first 200 people. Try it out and see if there are still invites left. =]
http://sproutbuilder.com/techcrunch - flarn2006, on 01/31/2008, -0/+4It SHOULD be View -> Page Source (Ctrl+U).
- SSUK, on 01/30/2008, -0/+4I'm not surprised, us Flash developers are right arses. =)
... Well, I am anyway. - s0nicfreak, on 01/30/2008, -1/+4Actually learning to use flash would obviate that need as well. But if you prefer to use online WYSIWYG editors, more power to you... I mean look at all the great sites that were created on geocities back in the day! ... ...
- hydrodev, on 01/30/2008, -1/+4OK so i got all sorts of ridiculous errors just going to the page. then when i go to try it out it says they are in closed beta, but next to that it says 00.00.00.00 till full bloom.
Not a very impressive start. - jrowny, on 01/30/2008, -0/+3I'm getting tons of run time errors on all the sprout cap.
- redxxx, on 01/30/2008, -0/+3dugg for linking the single greatest web design resource in existence.
- orcusfelinus, on 01/30/2008, -3/+6Arrrrghhh.... more vaporware. Closed beta. Yeah. Get back to me when they have a product to offer, not just a c*cktease.
- petemorley, on 01/30/2008, -1/+4gklitt, that's easily one of the dumbest comments I've read on Digg. Did your parents teach you to run before you could walk?
What good is flash if it's not backed up by easily updatable, accessible, solid, semantic html and css?
As JimmyIkon said. If search the engines can't find your site, how are your target audience? - topgigmedia, on 01/30/2008, -7/+10Actually - I do not see the harm is a correctly implemented Flash website. It seems that your bigotry is a bit dated.
- TH3W1R3D, on 01/30/2008, -1/+4Closed beta :(
- Atomic1fire, on 01/30/2008, -1/+4Besides
Flash is supported on every platform and doesnt have the browser problems that doing it in css/html/javascript would have
such as needless hacking to work in explorer - EricAnderton, on 01/30/2008, -0/+3Honestly, the *wow* part of this isn't the WYSIWYG part. It's the comprehensive, yet transparent, distribution and tracking of your 'sprout' widget. It's a neat idea.
- carnet, on 02/03/2008, -0/+3Thanks for all the Diggs... here's a private beta invite for you all.
http://sproutbuilder.com/friendsofsprout - Atomic1fire, on 01/30/2008, -0/+3The myspace users will have fun with this...
- Orb9, on 01/30/2008, -0/+2I haven't tried CS3 yet but if the timeline and dealing with keyframes is anything like the older versions then my comment stands.
- tringtring, on 01/31/2008, -0/+2I'd definitely be a customer for Sprout...while I have had the satisfaction & pleasure of working with excellent desigers, face it, great designers are difficult to find and even more difficult to keep...whether a software can ever substitute a Class A designer is a million $ question, but for now, Sprout will do
- jggube, on 01/31/2008, -0/+2First, I never said it was programming language, as indicated by this snippet from my original post: "using it without prior understanding of the MARKUP".
Second, I'm a professional web developer, meaning I work in PHP, PERL, JavaScript, AS 2.0 and VB.NET. I also know C and C++. I'm an expert in XHTML and valid markup. You don't have to tell me the difference between HTML and a programming language.
Third, your satirical example -- (table+td+tr) != (div+style) wtf.. read up on what the difference is between conditional and assignment operators.
Lastly, it's algorithm. kthankz! :) - FirstDigg, on 01/30/2008, -0/+2As of right now the TechCrunch invites from the story still work: http://sproutbuilder.com/techcrunch
- TedTschopp, on 01/30/2008, -0/+2ok...
Back to Second Grade. Get the following 3 rules correct and you will not make this mistake 999/1000.
There think of T(here) think of it as a place as in HERE.
Their think of T(heir) think of it as someone's heir as in a PERSON or other PERSON Type.
They're think of They are. - ElRaval, on 01/31/2008, -0/+2Interesting, original idea?
- jjb123, on 01/30/2008, -0/+2In your browser goto Edit -> View Source and then tell me it is useless.
- Orb9, on 01/30/2008, -0/+2"if you don't understand how something works, that's not the IDE's fault."
True, but I can still blame it for being completely non-intuitive. - inactive, on 01/30/2008, -1/+3I dunno, Flash CS3 is pretty easy to pick up. "ScriptAssist" came from the abyss, though.
