- sigmatic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you find the title offensive, go ***** yourself.
- vkkim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it doesn't matter if you think all asian women are whores or not. The fact of the matter is that the joke was offensive, and you should be respectful of others.
If you moved to China on business and everyone around you cracked a joke everywhere you go about how your wife, mother, and daughters back home are stupid, ignornant, backwards, uncivilized, dirty whores and the entire country collectively laughed in your face and (figuratively) ***** on your family, how would you feel? How would you feel if after you objected, everyone shot you down because "couldn't take a joke" and you were "too politically correct"?
Please, grow up. Oh, and growing up does NOT mean letting other people insult you and laughing it off just to fit in. - vkkim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thank you for understanding, Gtu. And I am 100% Korean, as a matter of fact. Sorry to spoil your fun, but in my country (as well as many other Asian countries) the population is almost 100% homogenous, with almost no interracial marriages at all.
- Swipe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2South Korea should be happy they can view North Korea's nuclear silos. It works both ways.
- vkkim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I'm in a minority group and it's painfully obvious that we have it much better now than we ever have."
I totally agree with you. Of course the US has improved dramatically.
However, I'm just afraid of the dangerous mentality that many people have: they think racism has been totally eradicated, and write off racism complaints as exaggerations. At least back then everybody knew racism was happening. Thne many efforts to control it has just made it harder and harder to accurately pinpoint these thinly veiled acts of racism--racism which is still there, but are no longer dealt with as a problem.
"Most multi-cultural young people have never experienced anything even remotely close to the racism that occurred 20-50 years ago."
The difference between backt hen and now is that back then the victims knew it was racism and had something to fight against. Now many people (even minorities) believe it is no longer an issue and think it has nothing to do with racism, even when it does.
Asians have the special problem of being the "model minority," which comes with its own problems. It's much harder to deal with than racism against African-Americans, which is much more prominent in the collective public mind. - vkkim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2""Someone should go say this title on their one free minute of anonymous public speech. That should piss some people off."
Done. In my best Asian accent."
Do you want a cookie? Or how about a fortune cookie, since that's all we eat in Asia. - vkkim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"You are quite possibly one of the biggest idiots I have ever seen."
Care to explain why? - generalleoff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2you mean they aren't?
- shawnanigans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The title is friggen awesome.
- Saxonx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1America Open-minded! *laughs feverishly while dogs takes a large dump in mouth*
- vkkim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh, sorry for trying to point out my views after accepting yours. But I guess it's too much to ask you to actually understand what I said, right? Again, sorry for thinking you could act mature.
- TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah. I'm digging it just from the title.
- vkkim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1generalleoff, you don't care because you don't live in Asia. Racism in America is a totally different issue, especially since there are such large minority groups. You generally don't see problems with racism in Asia, simply because the society is very homogeneous.
You watch Dave Chappelle because you are in the majority. No sane white person would ever see the black minority as a threat--you know for sure that you have all the power, and that (at least in your lifetime) blacks can never take that away from you. You can smugly say this because you are the dominant race. You never feel threatened. You have never been fired, had your housing prospects limited, been kicked out of a restaurant or been treated differently because of your race. We (as in all minorities) have, despite the popular viewpoint that America has moved on, and you can never understand it.
The race card has never been so important in America. Especially since most white people (like you) think it's no longer a factor.
I understand that this can be humor. But I did nothing to turn it into a race issue: the general white population did, over several decades. - Guano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Excuse me for trying to console your upset little head.
- Corny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Me love title love time.
- vkkim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just think the title was totally unnecessary--the article had nothing to do with the movie other than it had to do with the Republic of Korea, which just happened to be on the same continent as Vietnam. So why was the joke made? One must assume that the OP thought, "Since they're both Asian countries, my readers will make the connection--since everybody thinks all Asian countries are alike."
Most people would never make the same connection between the US and Mexico, so why would you do that with South Korea and Vietnam? - shanediesel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1haha great title
- alexcharlie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Aside from the title, the article is interesting. I hope in the future that ignorant titles aren't dugg though. And for those thinking that we are just being overly sensitive, please try to walk a mile in our shoes before you tell us to take a joke.
- J3Holaday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think North Korea could have gotten the pictures without Google's help. lol
- vkkim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1gtu101: Actually, the only reason there was racism was because you wrote the title.
- KidVicious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Care to explain why?"
Lol. His analogy has no relation to why people find this story funny. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You're all full of *****. Complaining some dumb ass title, who gives a *****? And the Digg crowd calls Slashdot bad? What's it like eating your own foot.
- peerk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As a man who dresses up and pretends he is a petite asian woman, I am offended by the title.
- Guano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I blame Stanley Kubrick.
- Guano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1vikkim, I really don't think most of the people who found this funny did so becuase they are racist. It just reminded them of a great movie and the satire of the time. That's the way it was for me, anyways.
- generalleoff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cuz it's a stereotype and stereotypes are ripe for parody true or not. People that understood it as a joke saw it as so but were still able tot tell the difference.
Another stereotype is all Americans are rich, all white people have power. I lack both. Also I'm a minority here in Detroit. But I understand what yer saying but I just don't 100% agree with it. Especially the bits where you say I do this and that because of this or that. I do what I do because I chose to do it and I am where I am because I made choices to got me here.
I wont say I suffer as much as some of the others in the world suffer, and they shouldn't have to as far as I concerned, but I sure as hell don't get anything handed to me on a silver plate. - vkkim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Lol. His analogy has no relation to why people find this story funny."
Yes, but it explains why some people find it offensive. - alexcharlie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Watching Carlos Mencia who is on Comedy Central is quite another thing than going to Digg. People are free to think and say and laught at whatever they want, but celebrating how funny the joke of a title is here in the comments section rather than commenting on the ARTICLE is just not what people come to digg for.
- jimmyM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1google earth is too beaucoup. maybe google can give south korea some alabama blacksnake to calm their nerves.
- Guano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Either him, or ANY OTHER stand up comic.
- vkkim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And most stand up comics make fun of themselves, not others.
- KidVicious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Watching Carlos Mencia who is on Comedy Central is quite another thing than going to Digg. Lol you didn't comment on the actual article either, dude. - vkkim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Actually it is funny. Just like its hilarious when I tried really hard to learn French for 3 months. Mastered my tapes then went over there and realized I couldn't understand a damn thing people were saying because there is slang and dialect that you just can't get from studying. The all smiled and had a little laugh at my expense but seemed pleased that I had made the effort. I surely hope they thought it was funny and didn't think "That poor American must just be too stupid to get it right no matter how many late nights he spend or how much money he spend on his tapes.""
Except that you don't need to speak French to get a good paying job in the US, while Koreans who cannot speak English lose out to people who can speak both English and Korean.
"You act like you speak for every Asian who speaks poor english, yet your english is excellent. The only person you speak for is yourself. The only person I speak for is myself. The poster may have been making fun of people who speak poor english, but you are patronizing them by assuming you speak for all of them. If I were on the receiving end one of those 2 actions I'd take the humor any day. If you can't laugh at yourself then you really should not take the risk of leaving your own home."
You're right. I never claimed to speak for anyone--I am only speaking for myself, and I am offended when anybody makes fun of people of my country, for I am one of them. The OP not only made fun of people who cannot speak English, but the entire country of South Korea.
It's great that you can stand by and laugh when people insult you. I'm not like that, and I think people should respect that, just like I respect that you may enjoy being insulted.
Oh, and I'm still at home. ;) - stilesja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"And it is NOT okay if they don't hear about it. "
Seriously dude, that was another joke. Amish people don't watch television and they understand very well that it is humorous. I bought a Chest of Drawers from a local Amish furniture market and when I commented about how everyone should be getting this stuff it was such high quality, he said "I agree, if only there were some way to allow people to know about our fine furniture and reasonable prices without having to drive all the way out in the country to reach our store". I looked at him with a sort of confused look, then it hit me. He was making a joke. We both laughed. I assured him I would tell all my friends.
"Actually, it's not funny. A lot of people in many countries (Korea for example) try very hard to learn how to speak English"

Referring to people in groups only leads to generalization. Generalization can either be funny or racist depending on your state of mind. Me? I judge people individually as I meet them. So when I hear a generalization and its funny I understand that it cannot possibly apply to all those people so it must be humor and not racism. You should try a similar outlook. You'll find it much easier to live your life with a positive mental attitude rather than a defensive confrontational one.

Hilarious. So original. So mature. - vkkim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"This joke isn't targeted at any particular ethnic group, its targeted at people who don't speak english well. Even if they read it we don't have to worry about them understanding it. Its like making Amish jokes on television, they never know about it, so it is OK."
The original joke was. However, when made in the context of this article, the OP associated the entire country of Korea (or at least the government) with people like the prostitude in the movie. Many people in Korea CAN speak English very well, including myself. And it is NOT okay if they don't hear about it. That's called "talking behind one's back," and is generally frowned upon in most social circles.
"Now, seriously people stop getting all outraged for other people. If you are a from Korea, Vietnam, or another Asian country and you can speak english well, then you pretty much know that people who are just learning make those mistakes and it is funny."
Actually, it's not funny. A lot of people in many countries (Korea for example) try very hard to learn how to speak English to participate in the global business community. Many spend the equivalent of tens of thousands of US dollars on tutors and prep schools and thousands of hours late into the night trying to learn and still can only say "Me love you long time." It's not funny for them, nor should we make fun of them. - cyriver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0KidVicious,

I didn't read them all. I feel you guys are playing on Korean though. Yes,I'm a Korean.
Instead reading all 103 comments, I read the article that this digg is referring.
I just want to point out that the half of the story is true the rest is not true. I may have to say as a whole it's not true at all.
What is true is that there was a Korean journalist (I might say a stupid one) who allegedly reported that Google Earth may be a security offend to Korea. It is also true that the Korean spokesman had a comment with regard to the issue that was raised by the journalist. But what the spokesman talked about was not actually about the issue that Google Earth might be a security offend. It was about whether it is possible to defend Korean law or not because we have the law that no one can take a close look picture on security related installment. According this law, Google Earth is violating the restriction. In other word, it was the matter of conflict between domestic law and international law. However, we do know Google Earth is not under Korean law.
This is what I can tell you about real story.
If you play on the journalist, I think it's fair. Indeed I regard him as a stupid journalist.
If you think it's ridiculous to have such a law that restricts the freedom to take a picture on security related installment, I can understand more or less, you might have understood that North Korea and South Korean have been technically at war since 1953 though.
But if you think Korean are ridiculous because they think Google Earth can be a security offend, it's not fair at all. Because we do not think it can be. A few people may be. But the majority of us do not think like that.
Hope my comment helps you understand what the real story was.
And please stop playing on Koean. At least with regard to this digg, it's not fair. - mopenstein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0let's do it this way:
"SHUT UP YOU BICTHES!"
You made a good point in your last response mevsyou and I'm glad you clarified what you meant. I appreciate your intelligent thought out response and hope Digg starts seeing more discussions in the comments like this.
Cheers.
there we go much better. - Gtu101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0HEY! generallgay, did you not witness the touching moment in which all racism (at least on this posting) was eliminated. so zip it.
