- MCA2142, on 03/25/2009, -4/+64Google... Please buy Skype from eBay.
- jayhawk88, on 03/25/2009, -4/+47Good: Skype handles more international calls than anyone.
Bad: They make no money doing so.
Ladies and Gentlemen: The internet economy in a nutshell. - mikek814, on 03/25/2009, -0/+35word from AT&T: "Time to end net neutrality, they are using our pipes"
- carterx, on 03/25/2009, -0/+26What can I say, I pay $3.00US for unlimited calls in North America. No other phone company will give me that rate and can not touch international charges.
- cubicledrone, on 03/25/2009, -0/+18"Unfortunately for the company, few of these calls generate any revenue"
I'd call this proof that people who use standard phone services are being colossally overcharged. You know, contrary to the claims of the rectangle-heads, capitalism is not "raise prices until the customers walk away." - carlosos, on 03/25/2009, -0/+15Doesn't Google bring out their own voice service with Google Voice (Grand Central + VoIP service)?
- cubicledrone, on 03/25/2009, -0/+13You mean the ones paid for by taxpayer funded subsidies or the ones paid for by taxpayer funded subsidies?
- inactive, on 03/25/2009, -0/+12skype doesn't ridiculously over charge for text either..oh wait...skype texting (chat) is free. ***** you AT&T.
- Knowitallism, on 03/26/2009, -0/+10boop boop boop bop bop boop
- cricketsymphony, on 03/25/2009, -0/+8but what about all that internet money??
- wreckosaurus, on 03/25/2009, -2/+10They make money, I pay about $10 a month so my wife can call her family in another country through skype. Skype free chat is great, but not everyone has a computer, skype has good international calling rates too.
- shaka999, on 03/25/2009, -0/+7How is this relevant at all?
The whole thing shows that the front end of the major carriers is grossly over priced. - cricketsymphony, on 03/25/2009, -0/+7international calling: A NECESSITY
please deflate your sense of entitlement - iamnotyou, on 03/24/2009, -1/+8That's great but at some point Skype has to make money for its owners that equals its investment or it will by bye bye and back to AT&T or God forbid vonage.
- CoD4, on 03/25/2009, -7/+13no, leave it the way it is
Google is already way too powerful - jpop, on 03/25/2009, -0/+6Well, $3.00/month + your monthly internet cost, right? Still beats $50+/month + long distance charges + your monthly internet cost (since you are already paying for it).
- inactive, on 03/25/2009, -1/+7Stop thinking you are important enough for companies to care about.
I love how everyone claims "zomg this is going to be just like 1984!!!" Um, companies could give a ***** about the content of our cell phone calls or our emails to ex girlfriends. All they want is our money. That's it. - dhulser, on 03/25/2009, -0/+5actually skype texting (texting) is 9 cents per message. skype chat, (im) yes, is free.
- inactive, on 03/25/2009, -0/+4I suppose this means that the NSA is all ears.
- Lordy1952, on 03/26/2009, -0/+4google...why dont you just buy ebay....
- WhiskeyThieves, on 03/25/2009, -0/+4What mobile device can use Skypes computer-to-computer calls?
- SohailKhanifar, on 03/26/2009, -0/+4i have no idea why i dugg you up.
- bklny, on 03/25/2009, -0/+4I’m sure if they hire some AIG employees they can become profitable
- ralphodog, on 03/25/2009, -1/+412 cents a text, I'd say that's rather pricey.
- SpookyET, on 03/25/2009, -1/+4That may be true, but Skype do not have the best prices. There are a ton of VoIP providers, some are country specific. Meaning, one has the best deals for a certain country and advertises to the members of the said country in the diaspora.
Using a free VoIP switch service and an ATA ( Analogue Telephone Adapter ), which costs $15-20 at the cheapest, to connect your phone to that switch, you can use the cheapest VoIP service for your call. These switches support configuration. It can automatically use a specific VoIP account based on the number you dial. So, you can just dial the number directly without prefixes such as star (*) followed by a digit. You make rules. If the number starts with +44, dial UK via the cheapest UK VoIP. If the number starts with +67, dial Australia with the cheapest Australia VoIP.
There is no need to spend more than a hundred dollars on a Skype phone. Just use your existing one with a cheap ATA. Also, you don't need a computer open. Furthermore, if you have an iPhone, you can use Fring to connect to the switch via its SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) support as well as SiPhone (ugly, but has more functionality than Fring). Fring also supports Skype. From a computer, you can use an SIP supporting Softphone to connect to that switch.
Granted, this is for voice for Phone to Phone, not video. If you want video, You'll have to use a computer with Skype to Skype. But, I suspect, most people use it for voice. - 7aji, on 03/26/2009, -0/+2There is Skype for Windows Mobile and there is a beta version for Nokia S60 smartphones or for that you can use Fring.
- Zain123, on 03/25/2009, -1/+3Capitalism is "raise prices to just before the customer walks away."
- FDDIcent, on 03/26/2009, -0/+2Ya I pay for the monthly plan and I purchased an australian number, but honestly they could charge more and I would gladly pay it.
- m85476585, on 03/25/2009, -0/+2AT&T probably still handles quite a few of the calls. They are a large Tier 1 ISP in addition to a phone company, meaning that they basically provide part of the internet backbone. I'm not sure how much of their network is international, though.
- aussieNickuss, on 03/26/2009, -0/+2In Australia it's 11.8 AUD cents to send a text through Skype....which is a bargain compared to the local telcos (unless you're on a special cap plan).
- Dugglous, on 03/26/2009, -0/+2Let's worry about that after Google actually owns all the pipes as well.
- ajcates, on 03/26/2009, -0/+2with aim you can send text messages for free, unlike skype.
- Knowitallism, on 03/26/2009, -0/+2is the sound it makes when you call someone lol
- m85476585, on 03/25/2009, -2/+3If they keep buying stuff, soon they will own the entire internet. At some point, they are going to rename it the Google instead of the internet and start charging money for access. By that time, you will be forced to pay whatever they charge because you will be hooked on their products. They will have your email (gmail), your phone service, your TV (youtube), your documents (Google Docs), your data (gmail drive), and even your computer (the rumored Google OS and cloud computing)!
- dross1260, on 03/25/2009, -1/+2AT&T or eBAY weasel business plan. Buy Skype, charge more, ***** your Mother.
- Buelldozer, on 03/25/2009, -1/+2International calling is not a necessary service! Internet is not an essential service!
I'm guess you're a lazy jackass. You want free calling, free internet, free houses, and free food.
I guess from your perspective it *would* be nice to move out of your Momma's basement and into your own place.
Protip: Wipe the Cheetos dust off your fingers and go get a J-O-B like the rest of the adults do. - protodon, on 03/26/2009, -0/+1Where is the god damn Skype App for iphone?!? Fring blows!
- enoyls, on 03/26/2009, -0/+1Methinks Digg needs a sarcasm tag.
- themastersb, on 03/26/2009, -0/+1This world is Google's Monopoly board game and we all just live in it.
- vmanthegreat, on 04/02/2009, -0/+0I'm using Skype on my HTC Touch Diamond and it works great! I can even call other skypes long distance... for 0$ !
even after my contract with Bell Mobility / The Devil is finished I can hook up to Wifi and call skypers...
check out Wired's article about the Free Economy: http://www.wired.com/techbiz/it/magazine/16-03/ff_ ... - endgame, on 03/25/2009, -1/+1***** AT&T! I HATE this company with a passion!
- heystoopid, on 03/26/2009, -1/+1But then again since this software originated from the same makers as Kazaa which had numerous open back doors and assorted open front , back , basement and side windows by default and all those busted and thus fined by the RIAA in the US to date were known to be using this brand of file sharing software .
Thus , one may ask out of innate curiosity , is it like father like son , since it is a closed sourced software just how many open back doors and front , back , side and basement windows exist in this form of software as well possible put in by NSA insistence or other more sinister below the horizon elements ?
Choices or does it contain questionable open spyware by default like it's predecessor Kazaa ? - dkarimi, on 03/26/2009, -0/+0Amen.
- reed311, on 03/25/2009, -3/+3I've used it a few times to make some prank calls, but the call quality is pretty spotty.
- inactive, on 03/25/2009, -2/+1My skype sucks keeps cutting out on calls
- MCA2142, on 03/25/2009, -2/+1never.
- inactive, on 03/25/2009, -2/+0Why am i not surprised...?
- Buelldozer, on 03/25/2009, -3/+1Despite the fact that Skype would go broke and shut down if EBay wasn't pumping in $$$ to keep it afloat?
How do you get from one point to the other? You're making my head hurt. -
