- jkmyoung, on 02/12/2009, -3/+34Buried for inaccurate title. Just because someone upgrades to a new version doesn't make them a new user.
- Tddupre, on 02/12/2009, -1/+19By business purposes they mean spamming me sex cam affiliate links
http://i43.tinypic.com/72akoz.jpg - DefaultGen, on 02/12/2009, -0/+16The population of Singapore. How... relevant.
- inactive, on 02/12/2009, -4/+19190,000 are people signing up again for the 5 minute free trial.
190,000 are porn site bots. - Nintendesert, on 02/12/2009, -0/+14Yeah, it sucks when you're really close and then her camera shuts off.
- inactive, on 02/12/2009, -1/+14You could just... you know, switch off your phone.
- YME1280, on 02/11/2009, -3/+13When my friends/contacts become more involved with this (which I hope is soon) I'm ditching my cellphone. Paying for air sucks.
- hiriumi, on 02/12/2009, -1/+11Skype is great. I couldn't have imagined a free video phone with my parents in Japan like 10 years ago. Skype is definitely revolutionizing the communication industry.
- tjex, on 02/12/2009, -3/+12Still prefer Skype 3 and get Skype-In into Canada already!
- hbyrne, on 02/11/2009, -2/+11That'll be 30.4 Singapores by year end.
- sladek, on 02/12/2009, -0/+9I use it for business with a skype phone that plugs into my router instead of my PC, so it doesn't require the PC to be on. This is the best way to use skype I think, the phone is pricey though (netgear, £100)
- kruykaze, on 02/12/2009, -4/+12Update skype for linux already! we're still suck with 2.0 and no support for pulseaudio.
- EmperorChow, on 02/12/2009, -0/+7Still no multivideo conference =\
- mmittimm, on 02/12/2009, -0/+7Skype is pretty great. It's the only chat service I've found with truly reliable file transfer abilities. The webcam service is incredibly reliable too. It doesn't die every 15 minutes like MSN always did for me.
- thejokker, on 02/12/2009, -1/+8so how do you get phone service when there isn't wifi nearby? I see it replacing land-line home phones, but until wifi is as widespread as a cellphone network i can't see it being comparable to a cellphone.
ie, road trips, parks, beaches, etc.? - zedj, on 02/12/2009, -0/+6Dugg you up. Even though I'm from there, I can't see how it is useful to the article at all.
- savocado, on 02/12/2009, -0/+6captcha got cracked
- Nicoon, on 02/12/2009, -0/+5@johanneshint: You are incorrect on both accounts. Skype is developed by Skype Limited, which is based in Luxembourg. Although it is true that it started off in Tallinn, Estonia.
Sweden is the least religious country in the world, whereas Estonia is on 10th place.
The list goes as following:
1. Sweden (up to 85% non-believer, atheist, agnostic)
2. Vietnam
3. Denmark
4. Norway
5. Japan
6. Czech Republic
7. Finland
8. France
9. South Korea
10. Estonia (up to 49% non-believer, atheist, agnostic) - noBananas, on 02/12/2009, -0/+5The price is right but, remember, *no 911 service* with Skype. I use the Skype plan for most calling plus have a pay-as-you go cell phone for emergencies and backup. Verizon is history.
- inactive, on 02/25/2009, -0/+5I'm not surprised one bit. I paid 7 bucks in total for three months of 24/7 service non-stop. I can call anyone's cellphone or landline totally for free and talk as long as Skype doesn't go out of business. I'm soon gonna get a fixed number for people to call me to by paying 30 bucks a year only. Beat that verizon. Oh wait I know you can't
- stupidfilters, on 02/12/2009, -0/+4why is he being buried?
i've gotten almost as many of those skype messages as i have from my actual friends, and quite frankly its making me hate skype with a great passion. - inactive, on 02/12/2009, -2/+6Cause you know about the sex change before hand?
- Rotzooi, on 02/12/2009, -1/+5Sssst! Skype is trying to gain market value beyond all reasoning, don't disturb the investors!
- Medicamusic, on 02/12/2009, -1/+4Agreed, one of my best friends just moved to France to play sports so Im able to keep in touch. Makes the coming-home reunion a little less awkward
- JoshuaSciarrino, on 02/12/2009, -2/+5It's probably because they are on Oprah like every day. Seriously. I wish I owned Skype cause of all the Oprah love they are getting.
- Chompy, on 02/12/2009, -0/+3My wife is in Korea for work atm, and I'm in the US; we've got it set up so that I can call a local # and it forwards to her Korean cellphone, and vice versa. On her end we can even use it as a videophone, since cellphones there don't suck. The forwarding isn't free, but it's only about $5/month.
The best thing about Skype, however, is that monopoly-protecting governments can't block it. Nor can the US Army, who certainly blocks everything else (like Vonage) on certain bases to protect AT&T's monopoly. - AndrewWiggin, on 02/12/2009, -0/+3Not the point.
- Meocross, on 02/12/2009, -0/+3Which is sadly the pathetic truth.
- DyceFreak, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2because 90% or more of the people who dugg this article are in denial that the 380K new users a day are legit and were just looking to re-affirm their choice in internet communication instead of actually considering what it is.
- tuxidomasx, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2sometimes i jokingly chat it up with spam bots like that too
- spookyttws, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2I'd love to transfer to Skype or a similar service but by internet is so unreliable that I would hate to find myself in an emergency and can't dial out because I need to wait 3 minutes to reset my cable modem.
- ejde, on 02/13/2009, -0/+2Everything has cycles of growth and atrophy. It's a good point to make, though. Too many business plans have been based on unsustainable models of growth and greed, especially lately it seems.
- carlosos, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2I never really understand the worry about 911. Can't you just use the local police number instead of 911? Just program that into your phone and you should be fine, right?
- Frostek, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2ALIAS was an exceedingly useful and brilliant command, which I still miss to this day.
It would be nice to see into an alternative universe where the Amiga hadn't been killed off, and had got some decent cash spent on it.
I wonder what it would have turned into? - Taomyn, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2Article was not strictly accurate as Skype had it's 5th birthday August 2008
- slipkn0tz23, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2Nice to meet you.
- Myztry, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2I liked the Amiga filesystem where every stream device (be it file, serial, console window, joystick, etc) used the DEVICE:ARG format and a common I/O API. Pity it predated the Internet, as HTTP: or FTP: fit that as well.
You could do "Copy readme.txt > CON:xpos/ypos/width/height" instead of using more (or whatever)
Additionally, you could alias devices (alias SOUND: /dev/dsp) even in a nested (alias BOOT: SYS:) manner. Furthermore, when using a Volume alias, you really good "Insert disc in ANY drive"
In so many ways, computing has gone backwards since 1985... Took the author a whole week to write in BCPL ! - Taomyn, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2Yeah, simply make sure that none of the privacy settings are set to "Anyone" and you'll not get any direct pings.
It won't stop people trying to add you to their contacts, but spammers generally don't try that route as it's a waste of their time. - johanneshint, on 02/12/2009, -3/+5Skype is a Estonian company. Which also happens to be the least religious country in the world.
Not that it has anything to do with... umm.....? - SwabTheDeck, on 02/12/2009, -1/+3I find this hard to believe. They're saying that 405 million people use skype. That's about 1 in 16 people in the entire world (that includes tons of people in underdeveloped countries, etc.). I know way more than 16 people, and a good portion of them are techies, and none of them use skype. I'm not saying skype is bad, I'm just saying that this number has to be somehow inflated.
- pamuckraker, on 04/10/2009, -0/+1Skype is the type of product that doesn't jive with either Apple or AT&T's business plans of monopolization. Neither will talk about the alleged federal violations. For more information on this issue, here is an article to read: http://www.yourlawyer.com/topics/overview/Iphone-S ...
- mmittimm, on 02/12/2009, -0/+1Amen to that.
- bbliss17, on 02/13/2009, -0/+1It is a good program. I use it.
I wish google would buy them out. - lodwar, on 02/14/2009, -0/+1i,m playing the numbers game
- Solan, on 02/12/2009, -0/+1Of note is the fact that Skype is a closed protocol. There are thousands of VOIP providers out there who use open SIP protocol which is incompatible with Skype meaning a Skype user cannot make or receive calls to the customers of these SIP VOIP providers which is pretty sad. Unfortunately this is a deal breaker for me. I will take the open SIP protocol any day.
- thejokker, on 02/13/2009, -0/+1i didn't see anything about Skype basing it's business model off this growth, it's just mentioned in the article. The mention of non-sustainable growth seems like someone trying to use a $10 word with a $5 understanding.
I remember when vonage was going public they loved to tout their new membership rate, but never mentioned that more almost as many customers were leaving each month. - drexl, on 02/12/2009, -0/+1I hate stats like this....total *****. If it were the case that 380,000 people joined Skype everyday, then every person in the world would be a Skype user within 43 years. That is, if the population stays at a constant rate of 6 billion people.
Also 63.2% of stats are made up on the spot. - ted510, on 02/12/2009, -0/+1Are you kidding me with file transfer, you get about 1 kbps on Skype, you have to pause then resume then you get about 56 kbps, crazy!
- depro9, on 02/12/2009, -0/+1Opera & the today show, almost every day they talk about skype.
- lodwar, on 02/14/2009, -0/+1i will allow myself to be bamboozled. Those kids need a chance
