we only wanna shut it down. - Darmichar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23What if a band of roving monkeys escape from the zoo and fling poo at your computer, breaking it.
You can throw the "What ifs" around all day and it boils down to one thing:
If you don't trust it, don't use it. - halc5s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Who shuts down their computer nowadays?
- skatingrox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I do, or rather my parents make me. They're paranoid it will catch on fire; the fire extinguisher is kept in a cabinet next to my desk and the phone next to it has emergency services on speed-dial.
- smackfumaster, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19NEWS FLASH: You can shutdown your PC through the Windows Start Menu!!! Film @ 11
- haloevo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18This is extremely pointless. Does not desirve front page.
- blargsoup, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Hilarious!
Do they make you wear a welding helmet to protect from the radiation coming from the monitor? - Arkz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9im sorry... what? Shut down? whats that? id die without that constant hum
- Judahgabriel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9The reason it can do this is because the GDS desktop software is installed. The calendar is just telling the GDS software to do the real work, as web applications can't actually do anything so priveledged.
As to why one would want to navigate to a website and load up a website in order to shut down his computer, well, that's beyond me. - Dhalgren, on 10/12/2007, -9/+16why?
I can throw my computer in the pool, too, but why would I? - evilTak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@Darmichar
When the monkeys first escape, you use Google Calendar to shut down your computer, thereby avoiding ruinage on the event of its getting coated with poo... - schmichael, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'll just keep using the power button.
- daghostdog, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7While I might not use it, it's definitely an incredible show of what you can do through Google.
- syberghost, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6You want a program that will run on your PC that can connect to your Google Calendar to see if it's time to TURN THE POWER ON?
- HobbesDoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5What about security with this approach? Wouldn't it be exposing your computer too much out there as if it wasn't already?
- GrinningFool, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5You mean these things turn... off?
How remarkable. - skatingrox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4No, I don't, but my parents yell at me if they find me closer than 3 feet to my monitor.
They even got me a wireless keyboard and mouse. Idiots :X. - zootm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Wouldn't it be exposing your computer too much out there as if it wasn't already?"
This is restricted to shutting your computer down, and it works by polling your Google Calendar account and looking for a signal to shut down, as far as I can tell. Therefore, if someone found out your Google Calendar password, they could shut your computer down. As well as mess with your calendar.
This is not a significant security problem. The worst that can happen is an unscheduled shutdown, it seems. This isn't exposing anything, as it's connecting outward. - marksy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3um, you dont need to use Google Cal to shut down your mac... The OS has scheduled shutdown/startup - other wise, you can just mung in some applescript for shutdown, and attach it to a day/time in iCal :)

Common scense tempered with a poo-flinging reference. Good work, Digg+ - DCstewieG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That's a bit overkill when you can just subscribe to an RSS feed.
- fearlessfrog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Wow - this works great!
Um, can someone help me turn my computer back on please - I'm out of town and need my files...
;-) - cyclotron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2*** iCal ***
- bstock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why not just use VNC? Then you can not only shut down or log off, but have full control over the computer (not to mention blasting music while unsuspecting family members are watching TV..). You can also use VNC through a web interface, so I don't see much of an advantage with this.
- hello2usir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Wonderful. More software for people who don't know how to use their computer, made by people who don't know how to use their computer.
You don't need 3rd party software to shut your machine down on a shedule, folks.
RTFM, thanks. - TheCheeks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yes but this is more of a proof-of-concept. who know a freakin calender could do this?
- Quarks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, if I wanted to do something like that, I shure wouldn't use Google Calendar for that.
There a lot safer and more convenient ways to do that (remote desktop, SSH, other safer websites). - f00xx0riz3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Ooooh lame. Five zillion ad elements and then top that with a "we're fuqing poor, please donate via paypal"-button.
Classy! - bstock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sounds like you need a Magic Packet..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wake-on-lan - brownspank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What "computer"?
- rodeo40, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Now, if I could boot the damn thing via Google, THAT would be digg-able!
- disrupter, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Lame
- heydigital, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Any chance to add a wake-up-on-lan feature too?
- treelovinhippie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hmm, I wouldn't want to give Google access to be able to turn off or logoff my computer
- tybris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1shutting down for dummies?
- TheCheeks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3remotely?
- plamoni, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2or on a schedule?
- cobr@, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i use the zoomy dock to shutdown, it has a button
- zootm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"There a lot safer and more convenient ways to do that (remote desktop, SSH, other safer websites)."
Remote desktop and SSH involve opening a port on your system which allows anyone who logs in the full control of a user. Unless your Google Calendar password is significantly less complex than your system password, this is less secure. As for other "safer" websites, I'd have to assume that that was security through obscurity, which isn't really a sound security principle.
Unless there's some security flaw with the Google login system that I've not heard about, this is not a significant security problem. - cbdgr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1now if you could only turn it back on :P
- WhackingDay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Neat. But I'll eat a bullet before I install Google Desktop.
- SinNombre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is silly and not Digg worthy.
- lebel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Gee, ever heard of the command "shutdown" ?
It even exists on Windows and allow you to setup a time for the actual shutdown. On UNIX it's miles and bounds more versatile, but nonetheless. This whole Google Desktop + Google Calender for a SHUTDOWN is way overkill. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3LAME
- gamersedge, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3yeah, what if there was a flaw.
- GreatBunzinni, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That is stupid. In the *nix world there is a tool called cron which does that and more, with the added advantage of not having to log on to some company's server.
- int19h, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I believe that analyzing the security of a program is a better approach than "use your telepathic abilities to check if the program is trustworthy, then wait for the poo-flinging monkeys".
- ESTEBEVERDE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0O RLY?
- YnotMe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Shut it down? What a stupid concept. What will they think of next? My wife, pregnant with our 22'nd, wants to know.
- int19h, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In addition, the amount of user-interaction doesn't have to be different. From the user's point of view, it can be equally easy, or easier, to shut down the computer via web.
