- oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+302you'd pay to use digg? i'm not trying to bash digg, i'm here daily, but there's no way in hell i'd pay for it.
- Blackmane, on 10/12/2007, -1/+73I wouldn't pay either, i would move to Del.ic.ous, then regdit, so on and so forth. On the internet you can find anything for free..
- rudy23, on 10/12/2007, -5/+46yahoo pipes????? wtf?
- Tyr7BE, on 10/12/2007, -2/+39"When slashdot was a little better I became a paying member for awhile (I actually really like their membership model, based on pageviews). There was minimal benefit to do so, but it was just a way to support the site."
Funny, I still see Slashdot as high-ranking among news sites. Since the stories are actually filtered by editors you get more stories with some actual content that are related to science/politics/news for nerds, and fewer stories with the headline "BREAKING: MAN GETS KICKED IN THE NUTS BY A HORSE (SOOOOO FUNNNNYYYYYYYY!!)".
I acknowledge that Slashdot may not be what it once was, but it seems strange to be using Digg to vent about the quality of Slashdot. - FearlessFreep, on 10/12/2007, -4/+35Now *that's* irony. Pay for a service to get stuff you won't pay for :)
- cds0528, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33here's the list from the article:
1. netvibes- disagree, there's enough alternatives out there that do just as good a job if not better (google ig, and my personal favorite protopage comes to mind)
2- google calendar- disagree for personal use, but if you need an online calendar for work then yeah it'd be worth paying for. (30boxes.com is another really good one that I think is a bit better)
3- wordpress- totally agree
4- google maps- ehh... only if you're a traveller
5- yahoo pipes- maybe i'm the only one who's been slightly underwhelmed by yahoo pipes... disagree on this one
the runners up
1. joost- to early to call... if they get some good content (they're off to a good start), then definitely yes
2- techmeme- lol, i've never even heard of this...the site hurts my eyes, so i dont think i'll ever use it
Overall... not that impressive of a list, the only one's thats spot-on is wordpress. if firefox and opera were both paid services, i'd pay for one of them. i'd pay for gmail (how did that get missed?).
whats everyone else's thought on this?
edit: i'd probly pay for flickr's low-end service too (i dont need a pro account) - washcapsfan37, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30"Dudes......push away from your PC, get some sun. LOL!"
Says the guy who is still checking the approval rating of his comment 2 hours after it was posted... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+30Not one of those utilities is worth paying for. In fact, I probably wouldn't pay for a single thing on the internet.
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -12/+36If we had to pay for Digg, there's a good chance that the types of users who have changed it from what it once was would disappear. That sounds good to me, where do I send my money to?
- themarq, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21I tend to agree. I would pay for Firefox and Gmail..... maybe picasa (if it were cheap).
And no offense to digg, but even a $1 a month fee would not be worth it. There are enough free news agragattors out there that there is no need to pay for news feeds. - WarpFox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17@frank
tell that to the opponents of net neutrailty - WarpFox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Because it's a lot hard to repost the content here -after- the site goes down, fool.
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13*Pay* for Google Writely/Spreadsheets? Free is the only thing its really got going for it, as it's quite basic. If they started charging for it, I would just stick with OpenOffice portable (for Flash drives), which at least is feature-comparable to Microsoft Office.
- keyboardduder, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16BITTORRENT!~
- FyreGoddess, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Yep. There it is. While we all have our list of what we think is "best", there's almost always going to be something comparable that's still free. I truly believe that even if you polled most internet users, only about half (if that) who *say* they'd pay for a currently-free service would actually follow through.
Altruism is all well and good, but human nature and "bargain hunting" usually wins out. - cryptoz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I find it odd that many of the comments on the site said people would pay for Firefox, but I distictly remember there being a huge outlash against Opera for being a pay browser back in the day. Have times changed? Will people pay for web browsers now?
- oddmanout, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10what he means by switching isps is that some isps offer an email address... as in every aol account and even yourname@bellsouth.net.... which would explain why he uses yahoo instead of his isp's email... although it doesn't explain why he pays for it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11You can't force people to 'pay' for a protocol...
- ryodoan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Rather than paying money for yahoo, why don't you just switch to Gmail? I am pretty sure you can get all the benefits you pay for in Yahoo free in Gmail, plus more.
As for the switching of ISP's, I think he was referring to emails that come with your internet service, aka, Blah@fuse.net or something like that. - AncientWeird, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14modded down b/c
A: you think that switching ISPs has anything to do with your email
B: you needed customer service for one of the easiest websites to use in human history - Apreche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I can't think of a single thing I use for free now that I would pay for. Even if Digg started charging, If YouTube weren't free, another site would take its place, and a new community would for there. If Digg became non-free then another site would take its place. If Ubuntu became non-free, which is impossible, I'd use another distribution. If all of Linux became non-free, also impossible, I might actually use OSX or Vista instead, out of outrage. If every blog platform became non-free, I'd write my own.
If there is a service out there that I use, and somebody provides that service at a reasonable quality for free without any unreasonable strings attached, then that is the provider I will choose every time. Gladly, open source is here to stay, and no dam can block that river. Even if every open source developer called it quits the source is still out there and protected. A new group would just pick up where the old left off. You can't stop the freedom. - Homunculiheaded, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5rudy23, I would arguably pay for a product like yahoo pipes, but it would have to be an application that I could download. I think pipes is very cool, but I'm hesitant to put too much time into building any tools since tomorrow yahoo can decide that they're really not all that interested in supporting it and *poof* there goes everything you built. If I'm not will to risk putting too much time into it, then I certaily wont' risk putting money into it.
Although I agree with the author that it has the potential to become much more useful. - tont0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5While i use them because they are all around good programs, the main drive is that they are free. If they werent free, I'd probably find something else to use.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Hmm I would pay for none of them. They do make huge money from advertisements. Most of them thrive due to contributions from people like us.So if you aren't going to pay for a open source software - then why do these sites deserve payment? Meaningless and senseless...
- subarusqueege, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9ummmm I guess I should start paying for air cause I cant live without it
- mattUSA, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@ Retral
The only reason anyone would pay for newsgroups would be to access huge binary groups. What're they used for? The two P's: Pirating and Porn. Sometimes specifically Pirating Porn. Heh. - nogami, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I don't like being asked to pay for a browser, but if it's offered for free... like many open-source projects, I will donate to support it.
- HarleyQuinn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Be careful what you wish for.
I really do not see the point of putting this "out there". If something is free, lets not put thoughts in people head to start charging for it. - celestial, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Analytics
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7I would pay for Netvibes on the principle that its a good product and they don't have any ads on it at the moment.
Digg is dog slow all the time and is covered in ads. Maybe if they made it load inside 5 seconds people would pay just to save them some time. The fact that most people here spend a lot of time on Digg but wouldn't be willing to pay anything to use it kinda shows how loyal its audience is.........
Gmail: I would pay for that just because its the best email application. - totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is somewhat similar to the whole movie/music "piracy" issue. How many people would really pay to see/watch 90% of the stuff they download, if Bittorrents/(original)Napster/Usenet didn't exist? A lot of this stuff we use ONLY because its free and easy to try.
- thomasjordan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3So your plan is to:
1) Increase overhead with mortgage
2) Pay for online services
Makes perfect sense to me. I was thinking taking another approach:
1) Quit job to decrease income
2) Pay for online services - wastern, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4don't open up this can of worms.
I always have nightmares (not literally) of someone bringing up a topic like this and then whoever runs that company seeing it. They then say to themselves, "hey people will pay for this.....sweet." Then they start charging money and its a pain in the ass
Something like digg you don't want to have to pay for. When I'm on a public computer or work, or wherever..I don't want to have to log in just to see whats going on. Its nice to just have the content out there for everyone - FearlessFreep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This would be more effective if some of the $40 went to the companies or organizations behind the web services you use, not just your ISP
- violentvinyl, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I probably would have skipped right over your comment, but you proceeded to reply and call everyone who dugg you down a loser instead of taking that opportunity to clarify as to why the hell you would pay for Yahoo webmail (as if it would have mattered).
So I buried both your comments.
Come back when you've figured out how to use webmail. - Stunn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3FARK's TotalFark is a nice thing to pay for. I like the TotalFark community. There are a handful idiots on it, but for the most part A LOT of TotalFakers are very helpful. There are some debates that go on for a bit on TotalFark rather than the "I don't like what you're saying so I'm digging you down so other people won't read it" digg attitude. TotalFark even has a section where people ask for help, discuss politics, organize secret Santas, give advice, and even try to get people together locally at a bar. It is quite fun. TotalFark doesn't even have to take itself seriously and it is still fun to go to. If digg could do something like that, I'd pay for it if the diggers who were paying were all mature. I enjoy digg for the tech news and I'd enjoy talking to more mature people about it. I'd pay for a digg site that only allowed people over 21 to join. Not for porn, I can go elsewhere for that, but I think it would cut down on a lot of stupid stories and spam postings.
But the regular FARK site's comments can get worst than digg's. TotalFark is a bit better. Regular FARK users can be full of themselves as they post useless pictures of cliques and things that don't have ANYTHING to do with an article. Digg kind of has the same problem but to a lesser extent. - shosterman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You could donate.
http://www.twit.tv/ - SteelChicken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2nothing on the internet is worth paying for.
pay for access? yes.
pay for anything web 2.0? not a f*cking chance. theres always another site out there to get info or attention whores or whatever is it your looking for.
even pr0n is free if you look hard enough. - awhiteflame, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"If Ubuntu became non-free, which is impossible, "
Says who? They couldn't close the source, but they could certainly charge for it. - markdr123, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Honestly, the only one for me would be Gmail.
- demonicume, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@mad5 - FF + adblock?
- batv0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This article is very ambiguous. Keep in mind that we use these services because they are free.
- thomasjordan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's funny. I love the line about "researchers" teaching chimps.
- washcapsfan37, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Mite [sic] I suggest you invest in Microsoft Office for the Word spell-checker?
- Homunculiheaded, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2With shared hosting so cheap couldn't you just get your own domain and email server for the same price. With the added benefit that you actually own your email address, and have full control over the account. With good, shared hosting at around $7 a month I'm surprised more people don't do this.
- CanceledCzech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm pretty sure I wouldn't need to change my life if any of these stopped being free. Yeah, I'm pretty sure I could survive without them.
- Umberhulk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You should just support the services that are free that you use on the Internet by not blocking their ads and actually clicking on them once in a while. That will help them stay free and stay in business. Unless of course the site is resorting to annoying ad tactics, feel free to block those :-). I think more websites should offer an optional ad free version that has a yearly subscription fee. The subscription then gives people icon badges for their posts and no ads. It seems like free money to me, and the user can feel a little pride by showing off their support of the site. Of course that introduces e-commerce to a site that would otherwise not have to worry about payments, but the site could use a service for that too.
- SirBotchness, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3sex
- LGgeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2dugg you up because of the flickr' comment, online photo sharing is the only thing I would pay for.
- Splizxer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I would use heathcare if it wasn't free. Sucks to be you!...S

What is Digg?
The Digg Toolbar for Firefox lets you Digg, submit content, and keep track of Digg even when you're not on the Digg site. Download the official
