- garfonzo, on 02/15/2008, -4/+41I wish there was adecent alternative to iTunes for Windows. I HATE how slow it is, I don't like Media Monkey (too many options), and I find WinAmp, well, clumsy. I would like to use WMP11 but, surprise surprise, my iPod won't sync with it. I could buy a plugin to make it work, but, man, more money? I might buy a Zune... seriously...
I'm really not liking Apple these days. - ilikechaitea, on 02/15/2008, -4/+26how? heres how:
1. Resource intensive
2. Gimme an easy way to delete duplicate entries, geez!
3. It doesn't monitor folders like WMP does (not that I use WMP, but that feature is cool)
4. When I add a folder to the library, it doesn't work out what you've already added from that folder, and so adds duplicates, dumb ass itunes!
5. The whole shuffle function is retarded. I can't quite explain why but I don't know why it just doesn't work like the iPod's shuffle function, which is cool.
I guess general library maintenance is my biggest problem with iTunes. Having said that, one the reasons I like my iPod so much is because of iTunes....iTunes awesome points:
1. Ok, I actually like the 'let iTunes keep things tidy for you' option. Thats kinda cool
2. For me, it integrates with the iPod better than any other music software integrates with any other MP3 player. I used to have a Zen Touch creative...***** off. Oh, and don't start me on the Sony players.
3. I love love love the whole podcast stuff. Has anyone seen the new Zune software...jesus christ, it looks like a MySpace page...podcasts are an open standard feed, why can't anyone else get it right??
4. I love how it remembers where you stopped listening on podcasts, and integrates that into the iPod, awesome.
There's more like dislikes but I can't think of anymore.... - Whaines, on 02/15/2008, -1/+20"It doesn't do a thing for system slowdowns"
Damn, doesn't fix the biggest problem with iTunes (for Windows). - anonymousT, on 02/15/2008, -3/+21amarok FTW!!!!
amarok 2.0 coming to windows and mac os X - TheNeptune, on 02/15/2008, -2/+19I'm a mac user, and would suggest everyone get a mac, but let's not be douche bags okay? Seriously, some people have legit complaints / concerns about switching to mac hardware / software. Namely the expense, Mac's pricing is on par with other high end consumer computers, but it is and will always be cheaper to order parts and build your own box.
Also, the iTunes experience isn't much different on OSX vs it's Windows brother, the only difference being the blending UI and stability.
"Get a mac" isn't really a solution to their problems and concerns - and is a negative reflection of mac users. - obliviousfool, on 02/15/2008, -4/+20It's very RAM intensive for a player. Especially for PC users. I'd personally like a folder view option, since that's the way I tend to put music on my PC, in folders. Getting phantom entries when you move things around is annoying. There are other things, but those are the ones that leap to mind.
- Superperson, on 02/15/2008, -4/+19The actual store=awesome, but the software itself has long been sucky because Apple can get away with it, it being the only iTunes store client after all.
- tcardone05, on 02/15/2008, -2/+13Or MediaMonkey?
- rishid, on 02/15/2008, -0/+10It has been "coming" to Windows for years.
- RuthlessPirate, on 02/15/2008, -2/+11iTunes is the slowest media player I've ever seen. My PC can run Crysis at a decent framerate but iTunes still freezes up.
- fkr3, on 02/15/2008, -4/+13I use iTunes as a media player and it frequently chews 100+ meg of ram and a bit of cpu just to play songs minimised to the system tray.
- inobla, on 02/15/2008, -1/+9Seize Control Over iTunes... DELETE IT.
- phoomp, on 02/15/2008, -0/+8I've no doubt that iTunes is sluggish in Windows by design.
- Jakerius, on 02/15/2008, -3/+10So... you're clambering for credit in the development of software you think sucks? Jesus, your self-esteem must be terribly low.
- ridethefire, on 02/15/2008, -0/+7This plugin turns itunes into a virtual clone of foobar. (minus the huge memory footprint)
- ZiggityZhang, on 02/15/2008, -0/+7digg circumsized ur link. Here it is again.
http://www.download.com/iTunesControl/3000-2169_4- ... - swrostmore, on 02/15/2008, -2/+8Is there a single decent lightweight media player for OSX that isn't iTunes?
- DeFex, on 02/15/2008, -0/+5used to be good about 3 versions ago. now its a bloated turd.
- mal5305, on 02/15/2008, -0/+4i always recommend VLC player. it plays any filetype or codec under the sun
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html - bdbr, on 02/15/2008, -0/+4I wish there was an "iTunes light" that would be just enough for me to drag music onto my iPod and maintain some playlists. I actually liked iTunes back around 4.5, but with every new version its just more bloated. Its only plus is that its more reliable than 3rd-party apps for putting music on an iPod.
- mrgono3, on 02/15/2008, -1/+5ever try songbird? or musikcube
http://www.songbirdnest.com/
http://www.musikcube.com/
i dont know if they sync with ipods though but they are less ram intensive - Whaines, on 02/15/2008, -0/+4What ACTUAL use do you have for cover flow?
- iamthejeff, on 02/15/2008, -0/+3I have about 30gb worth of music on my itunes at any given time and it usually uses on average around 100mb of ram. When you got 2 or more gigs of ram in your system, its not really that big of a deal. If you have cover view on, though, scrolling through the music gets a little sluggish. Also, I have found it eats up the most ram if you are using the cover flow view. It loads all your covers into the ram, and I've had it eat up over 700mb once. I never use cover flow, though. It has no functional purpose for me.
- fkr3, on 02/15/2008, -0/+3There needs to be a plain old 'media player' version of iTunes for all the times where you just want to listen to music.
- inactive, on 02/15/2008, -0/+327gig ? Tiny.
- gmprunner, on 02/15/2008, -6/+9How has the software been sucky?
- thespiff, on 02/15/2008, -0/+3iTunes is cool but it definitely has flaws, none of which are fixed by this tool. My top 3 are:
1) Slooooow a lot of the time.
2) New updates come out monthly, and require you to hit the website, download the exe, and install. I have apple software updater installed but it seems to do absolutely nothing.
3) Find album art doesn't do its thing automagically. - KungFuJesus, on 02/15/2008, -0/+3Yes but now there are pre-beta binaries for windows. Buggy as hell, but at least it's really coming
- iamthejeff, on 02/15/2008, -1/+41) Personal preference honestly
2) If you select all the songs that are part of a compilation, right click and go to "view file info", you can tick the box that says "part of a compilation" and you won't get all those extra folders.
3) Again, this is an option that is OFF by default
4) I don't know where you got this idea, you can drag multiple FOLDERS into iTunes and it will import all the songs just perfectly fine
5) See my response to #2
Please, do a little research before blindly bashing something in the future. iTunes may be a ram hog on the PC but it has lots of handy features and customization options.
Also, this app would be a whole lot better if integrated with iTunes rather than being run as a separate process. - dood, on 02/15/2008, -0/+3I'll download the occasional mp3 preview before buying it, and when I accidentally let iTunes take over for .mp3, I really "suffer." After the preview is finished, iTunes locks up for about 15 seconds. Who knows what it is doing. It doesn't do this while playing other mp3s, although it does skip and stutter once in a while. It's not a slow system, either. 2Ghz AMD64.
- Duathryn, on 02/15/2008, -0/+3Agreed, ever since I found Amarok I havn't wanted anything else. It's lightweight, easy to use, has a wonderful layout, and feature rich.
- KungFuJesus, on 02/15/2008, -0/+3Foobar2000
download it, customize it - eldridgea, on 02/15/2008, -0/+2VLC!
- thespiff, on 02/15/2008, -0/+2Do you run it while you do anything else aside from surf the web? Try running it while you're gaming. It can suck.
- obliviousfool, on 02/15/2008, -1/+3I thought of another biggie for me. No native support for FLAC. I just don't understand that.
- tabledesk, on 02/15/2008, -0/+2The only alternatives are hideous trolls: functional but terribly unkempt.
- solidus636, on 02/15/2008, -4/+6Direct link to download...link:
http://www.download.com/iTunesControl/3000-2169_4- ... - secleinteer, on 02/15/2008, -0/+2Winamp is the way to go on Windows right now, if you want library management. Otherwise, Foobar. But soon enough, Amarok will be available on Windows, and Amarok > *. I'm not even going to comment on *****; that's how bad it is.
- Lixie, on 02/15/2008, -1/+3Meh. FoxyTunes is good enough for me.
- meshman, on 02/15/2008, -0/+2Inaccurate. Apple products are perfect and don't need programs like this, right?
- fkr3, on 02/15/2008, -0/+2The update sucks. It's not even an update it's a check for a new version then download and install the entire new version over the old one.
- sewerhobo, on 02/15/2008, -0/+2Check out Play. It supports many more formats than iTunes will ever and is overall very simple to use.
http://sbooth.org/Play/ - MutatedNantuko, on 02/15/2008, -2/+4Or Winamp?
- bdbr, on 02/15/2008, -0/+2You might try futzing with your virus protection, if you have any. I found that if I dsable McAfee, iTunes starts a lot faster.
- fkr3, on 02/15/2008, -0/+2Sure, there is a super trivial solution to this.....some form of simple if statement.
- DeFex, on 02/15/2008, -3/+5add/remove programs > itunes
- dawnraid101, on 02/15/2008, -0/+2pfft not with ***** speakers. (which i dont have)
- PainToad, on 02/15/2008, -1/+3Songbird is almost there...
- rdoger6424, on 02/15/2008, -0/+2Looks like apple doesn't care about windows programming.
- fkr3, on 02/15/2008, -0/+2The distinction lies in the physical path of the file.... if that file is in your library then under no circumstances should it be added again. If the same song exists but in a different file on a different album then it should be added.
