http://www.lifehacker.com/photogallery/windowsvistamail/486979 - drakethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28See the problem with a post like this is it doesn't tell anyone whats actually wrong with the product. Infact most all of the posts on this article are just "Ah THIS SUCKS! I'm gonna stick with my l337 gmail!" Maybe tell us why you think it sucks and clarify why you think a product that records every message until the end of time (regardless of you deleting your account) is so much better (not to mention its just a client and it can access gmail anyways).
- Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24That ain't the final icon.

That is. - Haohmaru, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18Yeah well, if they came out with a totally awesome mail client that destroyed all comers, everyone would cry monopoly, unfairly leveraging their market share and on and on and on....
- grooviekenn, on 10/12/2007, -19/+32Looks like I'm going to be sticking with my FireFox & Gmail.
- Zero2aHero, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15The guy said he is running RC1... have there been any UI tweaks since RC1? Seems strange to post a "screenshot tour" for a build that old.
- ditoa, on 10/12/2007, -7/+19Windows Mail is a half-assed upgrade to Outlook Express. They integrated it with the Windows Contacts feature that is new in Vista and they added Junk Mail features. Other than that it is still Outlook Express.
- Markie1006, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11What? No three column madness?
I thought their army of usability experts said this was better?
http://www.microsoft.com/library/media/1033/office/images/outlook/prodinfo/outlooklarge.gif - Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I switched from thunderbird to use Windows Mail.
it's good, just the lack on OpenPGP support sucks. - Masticando, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13So what you're basically saying is that you were THINKING about switching from a Mac to PC/Vista, but now that you've seen Windows Mail, you decided not to?
- nwoolls, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11How in the world was your choice of email clients down to Windows Mail in Vista or the mail app in OSX? Was your choice of OS dependent on this one screen shot tour?
- macniatic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I'm sure no one in MS wants the credit of designing Vista UI. Its awful.
When Mac OS X was introduced the UI was glossy, with buttons that looked like candies. Five years later, everything is more flat and matte. Everything looks better and more professional now. But as usual, Microsoft is late and have this "glass" interface that looks like a joke. - ditoa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Luna is ok. It has the same layout as Classic just with a colour scheme designed by Fisher Price. However it is consistent which is good. Some of the applications built into Vista are totally different each other and it is very inconsistent. After stressing how important layout and consistency is between applications I am surprised to see how messy Vista's interfaces are.
- ngmcs8203, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13I would have to assume that icon will be updated by the time the official release hits the shelves. That's a filler icon... right?
- Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7There is you fool.
You can change the colour, sturation, transparency, etc. - vize, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6a few updated vista icons
http://www.winsupersite.com/images/showcase/winvista_icons_final.jpg - OverThere, on 10/12/2007, -1/+73 column madness is great on a 19" or larger wide screen. Besides that, it is barely usable and why I still use Outlook 2000.

- jakem1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I think they may be a bit more worried about people using Windows Mail rather instead of buying Outlook.
- AICkieran, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Its a ***** mail client, what did you expect it to look like? Its not even as if thunderbird was the first mail client to have this type of interface.
- VSLOATHE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Whoever put the screenshot captions up should know that it's spelled "stationery" when talking about paper on which you write. Stationary means unmoving.
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I always have to laugh at these MS articles pointing out how they lag behind. MS caters to a broad base of users. It's their greatest blessing and their worst curse because they cannot and will not do radical changes and updates to their software for fear of the support nightmare when thousands of grandmas out there can't open attachments anymore. They are stuck always having to lag behind and go slow for the remedial crowd. No reason to keep pointing and giggling about it. We all know the score. They're the most popular and so therefore, by default, must serve the lowest common denominator. If you want better, go elsewhere.
- Teaboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3OverThere: You can turn it off you know. And Office XP doesn't have it either.
Personally, I think the three column layout is great. I use it. But then if I'm using a lower resolution I turn it off. - ditoa, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8One of the things I hate about Vista is that the UI is so inconsistent. It really is horrible with all these different application interfaces. One thing I loved about Windows was how consistent it was but that seems to be been lost with Vista. I know they wanted to change the look and feel for Windows but they have done half-assed jobs upgrading old applications and new applications are inconsistent with their interface. It is a mess.
- mutedecho, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9When will they learn that you can't polish a turd.
- kimc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2From the junk mail highest setting:"High: Most junk e-mail is caught, but some regular mail may be caught as well. Check your Junk E-mail folder often."
Aawgh! Isn't the point with spam filtering that you don't should have to go through the junk?? Please, Microsoft, at least add an unsure folder like with SpamBayes! - Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Yes, works fine.
- lordsandwich, on 10/12/2007, -10/+12The more I see of Vista's interface in actual applications, the more it turns me off. Far as I'm concerned, this latest batch of screenshots is proof-positive that Aero is no less childish than XP's Luna theme.
Long live Windows Classic, if that's the only other option. - brendanc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I've been using RC2 Vista (5744) since a day after it was released and haven't had a single bit of trouble running Thunderbird or, well, anything really.
RC2 is so much of an improvement over RC1 it isn't even funny. But back on topic, Windows Mail is just an improved OE. If you use Thunderbird, just stick with it, it truly is not worth the switch. If you haven't gotten used to Thunderbird, give it a try-- you might like it. - Qwfwq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@vize
Those new vista icons look really great! - tunercircle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Don't really like the toolbar aesthetically, may be need time to get used to. Too Graphic for me ...
- Reno582, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2When I tired it, it always ended up with duplicate emails, doesn't happen with Outlook 2k7 through
- Benjin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4can anyone say reskinned outlook express?
- Markie1006, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have 3 x 19" monitors connected on an Nvidia quad card, and it was *still* unusable,
Whoever thought it would be a good idea should be shot. The person who decided to make it the default deserves a special place in hell. - kaffein, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Anyone know if Thunderbird works in Vista?
Not supported as of yet as far as I can see... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Apple Mail (with smart folders and integrated Spotlight search) is easily the best mail client I have ever used.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"Yeah well, if they came out with a totally awesome mail client that destroyed all comers, everyone would cry monopoly, unfairly leveraging their market share and on and on and on..."
Apple's .Mac service is a rip-off, I've no bones about saying that! And I've no bones about saying that this is ugly! - NoHardFelines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow ...and i thought Hotmail was cool
- AICkieran, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Not true.
You can polish a turd up real nice, but underneath its still a turd.
Im not ms hater or anything like this, but im wondering how much of vista is actually written from scratch or if they've just copy and pasted half the code from xp etc straight into vista, i think this using old code is their biggest weakness (like the WMF issue where it affected >98 because it was all just ***** copy and paste code) - guice, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2You're right, they don't .. *cough*IE7.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1but then of course there's http://www.litepost.com
- 07734, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm not a designer, but I know what I like. I didn't go mad for the quasi-glass when Mac did them the first time around, and I'm still not keen now. My screen is just a flat screen, my computer is a functional computer - time spent exploring the route of making things appear to be glass or in 3D on a flat screen seems a little wasted to me. I'd much prefer those talented designers (I'm not being hypercritical here, I understand creating this sort of look and feel requires a talent in a field which I admire) to spend their time reflecting the medium in which their work will eventually be displayed.
Make a computer desktop look like a computer desktop, there is still a huge amount of creativity to be explored within that constraint. - ditoa, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3It worked for me when i tried it on RC2 a few weeks ago. There may be some bugs but it loaded up and checked my mail fine.
- neutrino15, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1OMFG, that is the UGLIEST APP i have EVER SEEN!!!
It freeking takes "aqua"... i mean "aero," and makes it look like some cheap plasticy toy that you'd buy on canal street that falls apart the next day (and probably will.)
Microsoft, you've done it again! - aMiTnaRain, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2my bad, my bad
- oneMadRssn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1this blows. they dont get it. the trend right now is to make it easier to find what you need:
step one: invent computer (check)
step two: write a ***** ton of content (check)
step three: make it possible to search said content ( )
step four: ? ( )
step five: profit ( eh? )
and all i see is the same dam thing that is outlook. 4/5 of the screen is the search menu, and 1/5 of the screen is the search results. thanks MS, that the way i should have to sort though thousands of work related emails to find something.
heres my hint: ***** COPY GMAIL!! you have the money to buy lawyers to be able to completely rip of google. make vista mail a polished vista-ish gmail.
but you dont have the stones to... - pegwole1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Windows Mail is just outlook with a slightly new look, just like Vista it's self, It's still windows and windows mail is still outlook!
- convergent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't like the tool bar at all. I never understood the point of having a program to check your emails when you can go to your browser and view your emails and do other things in the same window (tabs for the win).
- GuidoRosso, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1While the new look is an improvement, it still doesn't look very good in my opinion. All these new skins we're seeing aren't much of a UI improvement and they're not aesthetically pleasing (although I can agree that the latter is more of a subjective issue).
Still it's a shame that Microsoft had to go with the trend instead of trying to come up with a more unique look. All the new graphics seem very trendy and unfortunately not in a good way, they have a very amateur quality to them. - mizraabianz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0iam not a big Microsoft guy but i do use PC all day at work as a developer and i receive tonsss of emails eveyrday and i must say microsoft outlook is the best solution out there once you have over 3 huge department with 200 employee each to keep up with. i cna organize my contacts perfectly by the groups, send mass emails by the group, filter emails by the group, what else you want?? it has great feature of apointments, calendar.. i dont even know eveyething it offer but it works greta for me, so stop bashing MS for eveyr oportunity you get and grow up!
