buried - dodger2020, on 07/13/2009, -0/+8Windows 7 has the snipping tool built-in. With simple hi-lite and pen tools too. Makes it quick if I need to show something on the screen to someone.
- sneakyness, on 07/13/2009, -1/+5don't forget the OS X counterparts:
Command+Shift+3 - Capture entire screen and save as a file
Command+Control+Shift+3 - Capture entire screen and copy to the clipboard
Command+Shift+4 - Capture dragged area and save as a file
Command+Control+Shift+4 - Capture dragged area and copy to the clipboard
Command+Shift+4 then Space bar - Capture a window, menu, desktop icon, or the menu bar and save as a file
Command+Control+Shift+4 then Space bar - Capture a window, menu, desktop icon, or the menu bar and copy to the clipboard
Pretty powerful. I always loved the little things like this that Apple always throws in. - sneakyness, on 07/13/2009, -0/+4Command + Control (if you want it to be put in clipboard instead of file) + Shift + 3/4 ftw
- inactive, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3not for things like taking a screen shot of a web page that won't fit all the way onto your monitor

<customizable> : Area screenshot. - sneakyness, on 07/13/2009, -3/+4Using a 3rd party app to take a screenshot is like using a tool to open a can of pop (or soda if you're one of /those/ people).
or
Using a 3rd party app to take a screenshot is like eating a hamburger with a fork.
Using a 3rd party app to take a screenshot is like using a hairdryer to blow out candles on a birthday cake.
Using a 3rd party app to take a screenshot is like taking a picture of a photo. - antdude, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1On Apple?
- SleepParalysis, on 07/13/2009, -1/+2The printscreen button doesn't cut it for computer forensics when you need to take hundreds of screenshots. Sometimes one after the other while categorizing them automatically.
- eruanno, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1Typical graphical Linux installations come with a "Save Screenshot" dialog wired up to the {Alt+,}Print Scrn key combinations, that save to PNG or any desired format by default.
- junkfoodjoe, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1Command is the weird little clover leaf symbol right? I could never stand those ridiculous finger combos you have to twist up your fingers for.
- flashcat7777, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1Can PrtSc or the OS X counterpart FTP to your server or record video captures, like Jing?
(no, they can't) - Rinnt, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1Don't some of the tools provide video capture? Isn't Alt PrnScrn only for still captures?
- burnerz, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1Although these are free, if you are willing to spend around £20 you should buy Snagit which is developed by Techsmith. Fantastic product and it now mimics the Office 2007 ribbon. It includes an editor, screenshots of specific windows, auto-scroll down website screenshots, screen recording and much more.
- inactive, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1dugg for screengrab - a must for firefox IMHO
- donotclickjim, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1CamView FTW! Oh wait, we're talking about just screen capture... why not use Ctrl+Prnt Scrn or Alt+Prnt Scrn then crop your heart out in Paint or PowerPoint?
- bjett92, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1LittleSnapper for the Mac is great!
- rnawky, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1I heard if you press Command+Shift+F19, Followed by Shift+Control+Option+Command+F7, and it's the third Sunday in April, then Steve Jobs will laugh at you.
- phaoloo, on 08/03/2009, -0/+1awesome list
- GeekNurse, on 07/13/2009, -1/+11. You soda can analogy is accurate.
2. Have you ever eaten at Fat Burger / Five Guys / any burger joint with monster hamburgers?
3. A fan would be a better analogy. What if it is an ice cream cake?
4. http://www.hammacher.com/publish/74597.asp <-- Seems useful to me. - chaos7, on 07/13/2009, -2/+2FastStone Capture FTW
- chaos7, on 07/13/2009, -3/+3no it's not. there are programs that do this better.
- rnawky, on 07/13/2009, -1/+1Your 5 hours late.
buried. - sneakyness, on 07/13/2009, -1/+1No but if I really, really needed that, it's only a matter of click and drag.
Videos are for squares, if you need a video to show you how to do something on the computer, you don't deserve a computer. - sourceholder, on 07/13/2009, -1/+1Forgot 1:
http://qGrab.com (portable, single .EXE) screenshot app for the minimalist; direct web upload. - dokie80, on 07/14/2009, -0/+0there's also picpick - http://www.pickpic.com
and a little review regarding auto-scroll feature with pickpic and snagit here: http://dokie-piece-of-mind.blogspot.com/2009/06/sn ...

- Strife67, on 07/13/2009, -3/+2redundant post is redundant
- chaos7, on 07/13/2009, -2/+1not using a 3rd party app is being like those guys who brag they've been using WINDOWS NT for 15 years without upgrading.
- B1665r, on 07/13/2009, -3/+1How did they miss Windows Media Encode for sound and video???
- JohnWilsoniv, on 07/13/2009, -4/+2Snagit for windows is my favorite.
