- Daisuke, on 10/12/2007, -4/+71the encoding can easily be done with another free, and _open source at that_, program, MediaCoder. Now, I'm not purporting that it is perfect, but neither is that software. Both products have their strengths.
available at http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/
just offering you options ;) - jrblaze, on 10/12/2007, -3/+42Here is a direct link to download the SUPER Video Converter:
http://updat.free.fr/AF026FC69AC92B96B367CB/SUPERsetup.exe - kimos, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20Thanks, because the site is SUPER down already...
- jaybones1515, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15Wow! a whole message board that hasn't had one comment posted yet buried by "anti-diggs"?!? I feel such love and cohesion now. (I know i know...this will be the one comment with -20 diggs :(...)
- jgee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10If you want simple go with this, but you'll find that these simple tools often aren't good enough and wil make mistakes. Personally i use different encoders for each format, gives you more control. I would recomment TMPGENC to anyone converting divx/xvid to mpeg1/2 for DVD/(S)VCD authoring does a great job, fairly simple yet comprehensive toolset, you'll get better results that wiht an all in one encoder
- tMac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8MAC Users - Check this one out. (it's free) Convert formats, encode with H.264,etc.

Here is a set of tutorials I found helpful as well:
http://www.sjoki.uta.fi/%7Eshmhav/SVCD_on_a_Macintosh.html
These specific tutorials are found on the same page:
Like - How can I extract a frame from a DVD?:
http://www.sjoki.uta.fi/%7Eshmhav/SVCD_on_a_Macintosh.html#extract_frame
How can I edit MPEG or convert DVD or MPEG to DV [back to Contents]
http://www.sjoki.uta.fi/%7Eshmhav/SVCD_on_a_Macintosh.html#edit_convert_MPEG - minion2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7You sir, are an idiot. From the page (with some editing to clean up the large number of acronyms):
Supported input source file formats are:
- Video format: 3gp/3g2(...) asf, avi (...), dat, fli, flc, flv (used in Flash), mkv, mpg (Mpeg I,Mpeg II), mov(...), mp4(...), ogg, qt, rm, ram, rmvb, str (Play Station), swf (Flash), ts (HDTV), viv, vob, wmv
- Audio format: ac3, amr, mp2, mp3, mp4, ogg, ra, wav, wma
Notice that ogg shows up in both the supported video and audio in formats. And later:
OGG converter Convert any input video format to OGG. Convert an OGG file to any other video format.
So... somebody had a knee-jerk reaction without looking at the page. Nice try. - snoble, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12If you need a simple, yet very efficient tool to bring down websites, without reading manuals or spending long hours training, then digg © is all you need.
- prothall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4See, THAT's what we need. I was going to suggest mencoder, but this looks like it won't scare as many people away with command-line-ness.
Even runs under Wine, apparently... - Chakz, on 10/12/2007, -9/+13If you don't use Windows you should be used to the fact that 90% of programs won't work with your OS, no surprise.
- kidlinux, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Sure it's been around a while.. someone just made it usable.
- Namain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I personally like VirtualDubMod, it takes a little to understand and has a problem with ogg audio but it can convert everything I need
http://virtualdubmod.sourceforge.net/ - 8ight, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5i found mediacoder just this week off the latest open source best of link here on digg. i love that program! i can get rid of the xillisoft audio converter i pirated and use mediacoder instead... plus i can finally covert all those old mpg tv releases to xvid easily. love mediacoder. no comment on this app though, mediacoder has won my heart.
- darkdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If you want.. you could use PocketDivXEncoder. (http://divx.ppccool.com/)
I use TCMCP (http://tcpmp.corecodec.org/about) to play videos on my PDA. - cessax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3this app was so made for win95....at least it looks that way lol
- itistoday, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Wow. Is this like the first the ffmpeg has been used in a Windows application or something? What's so special about this? It has been around for a while folks...
ffmpeg, the library this application uses to do its enocoding, been around for a while: http://ffmpeg.sourceforge.net/index.php - jumanous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3that program is so damn cool. I'm sick of using 100 different programs to encode and convert video.
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It can handle TS and MPEG-2 (HDTV) too.
- matt.rubin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i love pocket divx encoder u don't even have to install it then it convert for all of my archos
- Artifez, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It crashed 3 times since I downloaded it.
- jrblaze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well I will put a disclaimer in right here. I am the one who posted this story and I have no affiliation with the website or the company that supplies this software. So I would like to say that the comment "Just another commercial software product using Digg for advertisement." is completely false. Also if the company was trying for self promotion don't you think that they would have prepared for the *DIGG EFFECT*???
- mike1979, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So does anyone know of any (FREE!) programs that play friendly with DVR-MS? That'd be a lifesaver for us Media Center Edition folks :)
- diskopo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This doesn't convert from DVR-MS to anything, does it? I was hoping this would convert from DVR-MS to DivX or XviD.
- tmcleroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2this owns mediacoder all the way. great way to convert videos for my gp2x
- scbysnx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2the digg/slashdot effect reminds me of flashmobs that tribe.net facilitated a few years ago
- dexim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2.m4v is a MPEG-4 video file. The official extention for MPEG-4 is .mp4. Try renaming the file with the official extention, this is what I have to do to get them to play on my Xbox Media Center. Media Coder supports .mp4 files, give that a try. Also try serching for an MPEG-4 video converter. I hope this helps, or at least gets you started in the right direction.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Anything to anything right? Doesn't convert WMV to anything so... yeah.
- canucksin2006, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Nice...froze my virus scan and gave me the blue screen.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Totally worthless software.
I encode my files to vp7 which is much better than divx, xvid or h.264 etc. This one supports only limited no. of formats.
So the poster has clearly misreported.
One software that does support every format (as long as the codec is installed) is Virtuadub.I will continue using that.

www.pallab.net - yesonoter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I want to convert google video to AVI or MPEG. Anybody know this software works or not? http://www.dvd-tool.com/gvi-converter.html
Or super can do this? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This Super program is really good. I've tried the MediaCoder before but couldn't get along with its interface and bugs. (Yea, call me stupid) Super (C) has it all.
- monsieurgrand02, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cool! Now I just need to figure it out.
- mike1979, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was just about to post the same thing about DVR-MS files - a frickin pain in the ass if you ask me - you can strip the XML off of them to create a plain vanilla MPEG-2 file, but it's a bit of a pain really, and there is no program that I've found that does everything. You may want to try dcut, which is pretty sweet, has a 10' UI and everything for editing and compression but unfortunately only compresses into wmv :P
And you have to set up a prifile (.prx file) 1st, or it uses the defualt profile which is 320x240 at like 100kbps, looks like crap. So get Windows MediaEncoder as well to create your own graph.
http://www.inseattle.org/~dan/Dcut.htm - sinembarg0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Virtualdub is decent as well, but I'm not sure if its open source, although it is free.
and the download for mediaplay is getting s little bit of the dig effect. both of the US download servers i usually use aren't working. - jrblaze, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Thanks! The more options we have the better.
- Omicron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2this has been posted on digg before, but i'll digg it anyway. this is fairly good conversion tool, especially if you want to convert google video. it EASILY converted a google video file (GVI) to Windows Media (WMV) w/ no quality loss and it actually made the file smaller.
- iBrent, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Can this convert mpeg-4 to wmv? If not, anyone know what can?
- jhuebel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1TechknowPagan: I agree. How is this worthy of the front page or (at the time of this writing) 1300 diggs?
- alchemista, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1btw- MediaCoder worked once I converted MOV to WMV8 format AVI
- Muss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have been trying to find a program to convert my Itunes videos for a while now. This program didn't recognize the .m4v files so my guess is no it won't work. I don't know if a program exists that will convert the .m4v format, but if I am mistaken please someone point out my folly.
- sk545, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"i found mediacoder just this week off the latest open source best of link here on digg."
But mediacoder can't convert a avi to a VCD/SVCD compliant file, can it? - alchemista, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This gives me an error when I try to convert a MOV file to anything else, sucks.
- mary87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ok I made the same mistake as others, DO NOT ADD the #Dnload, use only
http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html - unikorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone know of any freeware programs that convert PAL DVD to NTSC DVD?
- petethechop, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Instructions on how to download Super http://blog.gilluminate.com/2007/01/27/how-to-down ...
- tomdigid, on 02/22/2009, -0/+1http://www.dvrmsconverter.com/
- GlenL22, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I wonder how many ppl dugg this w/o even trying out the software. I doubt 1400 people downloaded and used it. I won't digg it until I go home and test it out and like it.
- gumpy5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The GUI looks awful, and it doesn't tell you what the status of the encode is (percent complete, FPS, estimated file size, etc.) I'll stick with mencoder.
- cyberghost232, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah anything from tsunami works great for me.
- GlenL22, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Why don't you give an example instead of throwing out a blanket statement? Of course there can be bad results, as with any program, opensource or not.
