- kevinfell, on 10/11/2007, -9/+22Yea, companies would like to store all their confidential data on others' servers.
- conradovina, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Did you read TFA?
Most systems mentioned (MediaWiki, SMF) are for installing in your own server. That is exactly the opposite to using a service like, lets say, Google Docs. That way you store your data in your servers, under your control. - cheech_sp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10That picture has everything
- 7 yr old cell phone, check
- 9 yr old laptop, check

- meshman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I tried rolling my own online office once. Didn't even catch a buzz. Won't stay lit either.
- dark_ryan, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Yeah, but it's probably insecure. I do not trust other companies with corporate documents :(.

Now thats a pretty cool tool/site! - dako, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Katamari Damacy: Office ?
- Cerealkillr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I thought this would be a game where you roll a office online with Toilet paper.
Excuse me while i head over to Flash. - kungfoolou, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Most companies already do. They host their websites in others' datacenters on others' webservers, using their providers' databases and credit card verification systems. Companies like godaddy and web.com specialize in hosting material and content that requires PCI compliance. I think they can handle some private forums, file shares and email.
- se7en11, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2- laptop off, check
- Destroytoy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Never roll an office with cheap papers. It's the only advice Dad had for me.
- wiredb, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Maybe you should start considering a source version control (SVN maybe), even free online solutions. It's helps a lot this distributed development activity.
- andrewmp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I don't see how using other companies online services are "rolling your own"
- Stonekeeper, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1alternative to basecamp you can install on your own server:

Sensitive information is better to be placed on a wiki you host on your server. All else is just random messages, be carefull, maybe use encryption as well. - chrisxkelley, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1that's what she said?
- DrIce926, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3To be fair, I'm an intern at a company right now that requires me to understand all types of compliance and governance regulations, like SOX (section 404, primarily) and HIPPA, PCI DSS, etc. So I do know what I'm talking about - and I agree to quite an extent.
I was referring to small businesses; I used the word "corporation" when I should I should have used "startup". I stand corrected.
The target audience of this article was bootstrap entrepreneurs who don't have a ton of cash to blow. - superpixel, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1apparently you can also do this with ones and zeros
- zxcv12, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0The article's author has had a different experience then me. I agree with some of what he says, but some of what he says is just incomprehensible to me. Okay, first I agree that forums are a great collaborative tool. So are things like google office. I have to disagree on email. I work in a big organization and we suffer horribly from email abuse. Email just makes it too easy for bureaucrats to bother you. As far as IM goes - who is he kidding? Instant messaging is a tool for needy girlfriends, not professionals.
- DrIce926, on 10/11/2007, -5/+4Do you own a corporation? If not, I'm not sure if you're an authority here.
- bobcrotch, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Well instead of being wrong you were just off topic then, I guess that still makes you wrong though doesn't it?
- KibibyteBrain, on 10/11/2007, -9/+5redrock34 smoke: don't breathe this!
- theOster, on 10/11/2007, -10/+3your mom blends...
- redrock34, on 10/11/2007, -32/+3But will it blend?
