- cmsimike, on 03/20/2009, -4/+62It's speedy because it lacks features. That is what I like.
- Mutiny32, on 03/19/2009, -6/+51No adblock + no Linux = No Chrome.
- dujkan, on 03/19/2009, -4/+42chrome lacks extensions, broader plugin support, tighter integration with google services and better privacy features and a decent bookmark manager that sync with the cloud.
until that happens, it will keep falling behind... - Tob3z, on 03/20/2009, -4/+40Firefox + Ad Block = Awesome
- leetleo, on 03/20/2009, -0/+21Yeah, I love firefox, but chrome just flies.
- Bainemo, on 03/20/2009, -2/+19Chrome has consistently been faster than Opera, Firefox, IE, or any other contenders out there for me. It starts up faster, loads sites faster, and has none of the issues Opera seems to present when viewing certain sites. The only problems I find is that it doesn't work well with YTMND (a site I rarely visit any more because of how ***** it is now) and sometimes freezes on GameFAQs. No, it doesn't have a plugin that lets me sync it with my PS3 or whatever the hell people are asking for, but it's a browser. I use it to browse. If I wanted an application that acted as a base of operations for my entire life I'd get an iPhone.
- johnnyblazepw, on 03/20/2009, -4/+21yes you are the only one who couldnt give a ***** about extensions on firefox
- stresslife, on 03/19/2009, -1/+15I wonder what will happen once that Chrome really implements those features.... can we expect your piece on Google becoming Microsoft of Cloud Computing and should the company be split into several business units :-P
- MarkusX, on 03/19/2009, -2/+15I think Google might be a bit too hasty with their version numbers.
It seems to me, that they feel like they have to play catch-up to be taken serious as a competition for FF3, Safari 4 and IE8.
If they stay true to their product and the develop real features, they will have success, but not by rushing it. - stockjones, on 03/20/2009, -0/+11I do dig the speed of Chrome its very fast. But I constantly find myself jumping back to firefox for various features. noscript, firebug, fireftp, etc.
- noumuon, on 03/20/2009, -0/+10this is the nail on the head. people bitch about how firefox is becoming bloated, but praise all its features. they praise chrome's speed, but bitch about its lack of features. all the while failing to see the relationship between a program packed full of ***** that's chugging along, and an anorexic program that's speedy.
- renegadeafk, on 03/20/2009, -0/+10use adsweep. it's a userjs adblocker that works with chrome.
- CarzorStelatis, on 03/20/2009, -0/+9No Adblock = fail. To those saying "only geeks want to block ads, and geeks aren't Chrome's target market" I ask one question. If geeks (who want ad blocking) aren't Chrome's target market, then why does Google's promotion of it focus almost exclusively on its standards compliance and the speed of its Javascript engine? Those are geek concerns, the average web user has neither heard of nor cares about thw W3C.
- rieuwa, on 03/20/2009, -0/+7I'm a big fan of Chrome, and its speed. Everything just seems snappy for me with Chrome .
Then again, I can appreciate that some people like to have ads blocked (I have no inclination and tbh don't really mind them) and am not hindered by non-availability on my OS of choice (on win 7 atm),
I think people's appreciation is also dependent on your approach to browsing. Many people I know never close their browser and enjoy 10s and 10s of tabs simultaneously open. That doesn't work for me, so Chrome's virtually instant program load is a huge benefit for me compared to IE and FF (FF and IE persistently require ~2-3 seconds to be fully loaded. Not noticeable if unlike me you load your browser once and go from there of course) - jerstud56, on 03/20/2009, -3/+10It doesn't ignore ads. It blocks ads, spyware, and pop-ups. I can also customize it to block pictures/things I want it to, also. I never see any advertisement anymore. Haven't for years...
- kevnaca, on 03/20/2009, -0/+7Not to mention pages load way FASTER because your not pinging countless ad servers.
- AirRaven, on 03/20/2009, -0/+7It's called "Tracemonkey".
"JIT"'s part of the technique they're using to speed up the Javascript performance.
Chrome's drastically different from the latest Firefox Minefield build- the UI's far slicker, the browser handles heavy loads better, it crashes less often, and, best of all, doesn't lock up your entire system for five seconds whilst a PDF File loads. They take entirely different approaches to solving the problem. - iritegood, on 03/20/2009, -0/+7I have to agree that Chrome lacks functionality, but it's a great browser. Hating it becasue you hate Google makes you worse than fanboys.
- roxgod666, on 03/20/2009, -1/+8I need adblock plus. I don't give a ***** about the other addons.
- sh4rkb1t3, on 03/20/2009, -3/+9What I need in a web browser is more speed, more simplicity, and fewer redundant gimmicks. Chrome 2.0 is a solid upgrade that gives me just that.
- housemaster49, on 03/20/2009, -0/+5chrome is definitely fast, but minefield, a FF3 alpha browser, has literally the same features as FF3, but with a faster javascript (I believe it's called JIT). The only thing lacking from minefield is themes and plugins that work "out of the box" (without modification). things like adblock, flash, and some other plugins work perfectly fine
- nsdjoe, on 03/20/2009, -0/+6I just use chrome for porn mode.
- veganpa, on 03/20/2009, -5/+11Yup -- no adblock, no flash block, give it up.
- Rally603, on 03/20/2009, -0/+6I do not want Chrome to become a Firefox knockoff; keep it slim, breezy, and clutter free.
If you want Firefox for its features, then use it, but don't claim that Chrome needs to be more like Firefox. Just use what works for you and get this idea of one perfect browser frankenstein that has every feature known to man and loads things before you even ask for them. I like that I have a choice. - tidu, on 03/20/2009, -2/+8It lacks Mac too.
- WL92, on 03/20/2009, -0/+6I read the full article; while it was good, what's the point of crying over version numbers. They can call it Chrome 1234.567 for all I care; it's *****' fast.
Otherwise, it was a damn good article. - 9bpm9, on 03/20/2009, -25/+30Am I the only one who couldn't give a ***** about extensions on firefox?
- mediaphile, on 03/20/2009, -0/+5I prefer not having loud, obnoxious, annoying flash video advertisements automatically load and startle the ***** out of me.
- amfantasy, on 03/20/2009, -3/+8I can live with out adblock (there are other ways around that) but no Linux version after this long is just bull
- Nephersir7, on 03/20/2009, -0/+5Its not a bug, its a feature.
- Greyh0und, on 03/20/2009, -0/+4I like both Firefox and Chrome.
Firefox for it's extensibility and Chrome for it's speed.
I mostly use Chrome (for it's speed) but sometimes I HAVE to use Firefox, because I miss a few functions (Firebug), and no, Firebug Lite is NOT a good replacement :P
I think that when Chrome has "Greasemonkey for Chrome" it's extensibility would be MUCH better, since you can create an extension simply by writing a Javascript script :) - jlimon, on 03/20/2009, -1/+5http://www.downloadsquad.com/2009/03/17/google-chr ...
It's in testing - quit your bitchin' - spiralspirit, on 03/20/2009, -0/+4adblock plus, download helper, and flashgot.
- rdmorley, on 03/20/2009, -0/+4how is babby formed?
- Elranzer, on 03/20/2009, -0/+4There's a lot of crap plugins for FireFox, but there's always AdBLock Plus (that EVERYONE uses), and then there's always the few that you love. Tons of people seem to like GreaseMonkey, too.
For me, I love Locationbar2, Download Statusbar and Chromifox.
Also, I just CAN'T use Chrome, IE or Opera due to no AdBlock. - Mutiny32, on 03/20/2009, -0/+4I know all about things like privoxy. I like adblock because it is made specifically for the browser I am using. And it collapses elements.
- kevnaca, on 03/20/2009, -0/+4Still no OS X or Linux support so no go yet.
- Compactman, on 03/20/2009, -0/+3It needs foxmarks so I can switch!
- Elranzer, on 03/20/2009, -1/+4Internet Explorer FTL
- choopie911, on 03/20/2009, -0/+3It's webkit, but still no mac version.... nice
- P5ycHo, on 03/20/2009, -0/+3I was hoping for the os x version, But Safari 4 already does it for me.
- johnleemk, on 03/20/2009, -0/+3Actually I always have at least a dozen tabs open at any point in time and never close my browser, but even then, Chrome is still by far my preferred browser. I love Firefox and Opera, I've used both of them extensively in the past, but Chrome is just by far the fastest browser I have ever used. There are days when I get mad that I don't have AdBlock on Chrome, but Chrome is really so much snappier than Firefox that it's worth the hassle. Firefox slows down tremendously when you have a lot of tabs open.
The other thing that seals the deal for me with Chrome is how each tab and plugin is isolated with its own process. When Flash hangs in other browsers, or when one website ***** up my browser, I lose everything (there is session saving, true, but Firefox is slower than Chrome at starting up again, especially when you've got a ton of tabs open). With Chrome, I kill the offending process, and keep going. It's amazing. - zafayar, on 03/20/2009, -1/+4Lot of people are complaining about absence of AdBlock on Chrome. If Google ever allows it on chrome, would that not be in direct conflict with their revenue source? Hell, the first thing I block with AdBlock is all Google related tracking cookies, and all ads coming from google. Hell I even block the Analytics js from loading.
Just wondering... - Bub978, on 03/20/2009, -0/+3I've been using Chrome since release and I love it. The only time's I miss Firefox are when a Chrome compatibility issues crops up, which is unfortunately rather often.
I downloaded the beta after reading this article, and I'm already getting hooked on page zooming. I used to have to lean forward to read some of the smaller text. I have a 21" monitor and I sit about five feet from my screen. It's nice to not have to squint. - dtfinch, on 03/20/2009, -0/+2Getting close (randomly either 99/100 or 100/100 for me), but in a failing sort of way.
http://mytsoftware.com/misc/c2acid3.png - Akufen, on 03/20/2009, -0/+2Yeah lets digg down the chinese guy for his lack of english skills. I'd like to see those who've dugg him down makes as much sense in chinese. ;)
Dugg up for the effort! - SilverRocket, on 03/20/2009, -0/+2As a web developer, I need new browsers to behave the same, not interpret javascript/css differently. Chrome is a quirky browser that requires its own additional code workarounds. I expected MUCH more from Google.
- farfromsubtl, on 03/20/2009, -0/+2LOL, Dugg down for a very legitimate and relevant question.
- Trent0090, on 03/21/2009, -0/+2http://www.mychromeaddons.com/ your welcome, chrome addons including ad blockers.
- p13t3rm, on 03/20/2009, -1/+3Hahahaha.
Always fun to pick on Opera users. -
