- Retrospekt, on 11/11/2007, -0/+26Best torrent application around.
www.utorrent.com/download.php - amprancid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+21But Azureus is a resource hog. µTorrent provides all of the necessities in a simplistic, usable gui that is not bloated with crap.
- justhim, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18Finally. The missing webUI was the only thing I didn't like giving up when I dumped Azureus.
- PsychePsyche, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Saw this on uTorrent's website but could never figure out how to use it. Good tutorial!
- pianomahnn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9I have 140 torrents seeding right now and uTorrent is barely using any resources. I used azureus....before I knew about utorrent.
- DomZy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Welcome to last year
- pianomahnn, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9I've been using this for a while now. Wonderful little tool for when I'm at the office. :D

That just not true. I disagree that webui is obsolete because of RDP. First of all webui is focused and fast. You can literally use this over dial-up if you had to. No need to launch RDP just to check your up/downloads. RDP is a dog on anything but a broadband connection.
Also about security, having an RDP port open is much less secure than opening up a webui port. With rdp, if its exploited or your password is stolen, your entire system is compromised. If your webui pw is compromised, the rest of your system is relatively safe.
I used to use RDP/VNC to control my azureus downloads but now am using Webui. It does what it does well. - kinkysexradio, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6There is a scheduler. Is that what you meant?
It's under "preferences". - justice7, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9remote desktop is a WAY more secure method of doing this -- not to mention you'll have full control over your entire system.. not just uTorrent
sure its cool in a way, but its really made obsolete by RDP. - Seancarl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Same here, I love starting a torrent from work and having it done when i return home.
- bendedavis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I've just recently started using uTorrent's RSS Downloader feature and it's really great.
- RHEEK, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4THANK YOU.
I've been scrolling down forever trying to find someone who knows about things within six months of their happening. I'm pretty sure that WebUI has made front page a dozen times before too. - AnteChronos, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3If you want a µTorrent-like client for linux, try KTorrent. I actually prefer Azureus, memory hog that it is, but I can definitely see the appeal of µTorrent.
- majin23x, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3It has a scheduler.
I run mine at work, so I throttle the bandwidth down from 8-5 and then go balls deep after 5.
I also use the webUI to access it and add downloads from home. It's really not that hard to use, I've even taught my wife how to add torrents. - kinkysexradio, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Took about 6 minutes and was a breeze to install. I even grabbed the firefox extension he mentions... both are sweet little programs.
- captbaritone, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I have a pretty slick setup using uTorrent and its web UI.
I set up Firefox (on my macBook) to associate .torrent files with a Transmit (ftp client) "droplet" which automatically uploads the torrent file to the ftp server on my home windows machine. There, I have uTorrent watch that directory and automatically download them. So, if I click on a torrent, when I get home, the file is waiting for me on my server! - ahhell, on 10/11/2007, -7/+9@indoloony
Is it really necessary to post EVERY damn thing from Lifehacker? - pHr34kY, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2TorrentFlux on Linux has been able to do this for quite some time. Good to hear that Windows applications are finally catching up :)
- DeejayKnight, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2And a Mac client... *preps for the inevitable dig-down*
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Why don't you go ask Justin Long to program one for you ;p
- Eisim, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1What Digg needs to do as fast as possible is to add a section for "OLD *****". For people not refreshing anything anytime to check for updates - "we like ***** being posted again in 1-2 months, cause we missed it last time it was up, cause we have a life outside digg blablabla" - So, pleaaase Digg - create a nice little section where old stuff can be added once every 2 months, and 6-12 months old news can be added as well - those who actually have a life will be pleased.
- next, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2@eggstylin:
Actually, uTorrent runs just peachy in Wine.
BUT, you know the best torrent client around DOES run on Linux, and it surely isn't uTorrent.
rTorrent is the ultimate client for obnoxious power users. The GUI uses ncurses, so you can ssh into your PC and have full control of the client. And when it's running on your system, you can leave it running in its screen session. Even if you restart your window manager, it stays open. It supports protocol encryption, and it has a lower memory and CPU footprint than even uTorrent. I have 300+ torrents open, 100kB/s traffic either way (yay college), and yet on my little Athlon 64 3800+ it uses 0% CPU and 22MB of RAM.
uTorrent is a great client. But if you take the time to look past rTorrent's lack of a standard GUI, you'll find that it IS the best BT client you can find. ;) - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"THANK YOU.
I've been scrolling down forever trying to find someone who knows about things within six months of their happening."
Meh. Relax, not all of us are refreshing utorrent's website every 5 seconds to check on updates. - kakti, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1VNC FTW! Why control only parts of one program, when you can control your entire computer? Encrypted to boot. Unless you're running on a 28.8 your bw should be able to handle it...
- Ashex, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I was running utorrent with the webui for a few months. It worked fairly well, I never used the webui personally, I had my roommates use it so they could check on their torrents.
If you want a real torrent setup (fyi: I'm not being a linux fanboy) that allows you to setup users with quotas and intergrated search along with a messaging system, check out torrentflux. - meshman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"Utorrent 1.6 Standard, the last final build, was done before the company was purchased and the new code written. That version should be safe I believe and is still an excellent client.
The fact that Utorrent is now owned and being updated by people that have signed agreements with the RIAA and MPAA and NOT the original programmer, should give anybody pause.
If you wish to use Utorrent, I'd simply say stay with the 1.6 Standard final version and do not use anything after that release.
I for one do not wish to support ANY effort by someone so chummy with the RIAA and MPAA, period. I don't see why anybody would want to, especially with the original author no longer coding the program. He cashed out and he's done. Whatever happens from this point forward is no longer something he's involved in, I believe. " - kennyGS13, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1man I wish it worked with the wii, it says software not supported :(
- TVarmy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It runs nearly perfectly under WINE, with similar low resource use. The GUI has a tendency to flicker for some odd reason with me, but otherwise it is perfect.
- MonkeyFit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I agree. I have a small file server running Ubuntu and it would be nice to have it download my torrents there without actually jumping on the server. I much prefer uTorrent to azureus. Looks like uTorrent is in the WINE AppDB, so I'll have to try that when I get home.
http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?iAppId=2760 - jsully, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Also really useful once you have this is the uTorrent Vista sidebar gadget thinger:
http://torrentfreak.com/utorrents-vista-sidebar-gadget/
I find this nicer than always having the WebUI open in a tab. - Cimlite, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1This works great... I remote control uTorrent from the Xbox with a XBMC python script all the time.
If you have that setup I highly recommend you get that script from XBMCScripts.com. It's excellent. - TaterSalad77, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1This will be great while I am at college since torrents are blocked.
- kjlowe, on 04/13/2009, -0/+1Thanks for the tip.
- drummerjed, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1digg needs to add a lifehacker section as well as and engadget section.
- NinjaBoy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3utorrent needs a linux client. And the ability to schedule. So from 3:00am - 5:00pm it download and then stops after that.
- 350Zed, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Great idea! I'll open a hole in my firewall, let uTorrent act as a Web server, then open an unencrypted session remotely to my PC.
Buried as STUPID and DANGEROUS!
Play safe on the 'net, kids. ALWAYS encrypt (e.g., SSL, IPSec) your remote access to any PC. - tiwest, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0@ninjaboy: Go and apt-get wine! uTorrent runs fine on linux via wine!
- dagamer34, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Still needs a Mac version. -_-
- chubbstar, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1uTorrent for LINUX! NOW!
- uptownhr, on 06/24/2008, -0/+0Check out www.piratersblog.com for Linux uTorrent guide and a uTorrent webUI setup guide.
- stonebear, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Meh. Just a couple of years too late; it took so long to implement this feature, remote desktop filled its niche long ago. Only fanboys and noobs will bother with it now.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Sorry, but I have to digg this down for one reason. The author's laughably lame "Hit the jump and I'll show you how to set it up." The phrase "after the jump" is pathetic enough. But trying to make it sound cooler with "hit the jump" doesn't even make SENSE.
- kyn2k, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0cant believe this has 700+ diggs, its about a year old....
- macinfloydvolk, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1eh Azureus get WeUI plug ins and run it on both windows and Linux blah
- darwin81, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Why are you digging this comment down? He was just making the point that Azureus can do the same thing.
- EricJD, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Yeah, OLD news.
- AmazingAndrex, on 10/11/2007, -6/+4uTorrent is pretty much automated as far as I'm concerned. I suppose this is useful for stopping me from seeding too much and saving my bandwidth, or checking how far my torrents are along, but like you said, the usefulness is pretty limited.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2Mac version? Pretty please?
- smackhero, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1100kB/s for 300+ torrents? you either have a really slow connection at your school or you've only got 2 torrents open and the rest are just sitting in a queue.
