- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -11/+94It's a freaking beta, this type of 'situation' isn't new to anyone (Who is testing software) and they do offer help, while the beta expires they still let you log in and backup files, etc until August (Though at limited sessions), etc.
Let's not forget that they gave out a free copy to anyone who reported a bug (Who was an 'official' tester of which there were many THOUSANDS IIRC).
And that 'guinea pigs' article is just stupid, almost as bad as the story you submitted about Mac Office users being guinea pigs back in the day. - Yarnage, on 10/12/2007, -2/+41@supermajic, he was just sterotyping the typical Digg responses.
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -13/+41everything before retail was buggy as hell. why is anyone still using it.
(and just to save you the time: "why is anyone using vista at all", "M$ suck", "I love steve jobs", "vista is *****") - chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30those are the comment I was expecting from my comment. I've had no problems with Vista either.
- PlaneLayz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28It did clearly state whilst installing it that it was a Beta and SHOULD NOT BE USED as a primary machine. There is no way to easily go back to XP as far as im aware except a full reformat.
(Lol - Notice I just assumed people will want to go back to XP after trying Vista - Oooops) - ElbridgeGerry, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26Ah, it just wouldn't be a Microsoft story without a buried Schestowitz comment.
- Zeush8su, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22@schestowitz
It was beta software, should it be Microsoft's fault that the user became attached to the software or that a user made it his/her primary system? I ran the beta versions of Vista and had no major problems(Minor hiccups) but like any good party it has to come to an end and all those beta testers have the option to go the Vista route or go back to XP/2000. - nixr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22"now that beta testers have received no real reward"
Not true. Most of the testers who submitted a bug report got a free copy of Vista Ultimate for participating. Downloading and installing a beta product doesn't make you beta tester. You actually need to participate. Quid Pro Quo Clarice. - hambend, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22@schestowitz
Come on, now. Usually I'm on your side, but since when do beta testers get given anything by anyone? Never by nobody. It's pretty well known that beta versions of any software are released for testing only, and if you sign up and install it you should ought to be prepared for it to lock up and eat all your data without warning. If "this software will refuse to work in one weeks time" isn't sufficient, you shouldn't be on a beta test.
Beta testers don't need to be rewarded for their efforts. Most are happy to do it out of curiosity. - GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19"Evil companies" want to keep users hooked, by giving out free license keys to dedicated beta testers who submit bug or error reports with Office or Vista (or other Microsoft products). Microsoft is one of these "evil comapnies" that is giving out free software as a kind of "evil thanks" to the "sheeple" who helped.
Now, I don't see why this is on the front page. You got free software from a company that pays its workers by SELLING software. The free software they gave you came with the clause that you had to at least make some effort to help Microsoft in return. Those who did got a free key. Those who didn't "only" got to use the operating system for a couple of months (or more). - supermajic, on 10/12/2007, -15/+25woah? why is vista *****.. it's been better than xp in my experience..
+ why does this make the front page.. how many people are still using prerelease versions? - Attacus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12REMINDER: The applications that you are using that have a trial or expiration period are set to expire at a the given date! Digg my story! /facepalm
- roosterjm2k2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10If you would have kept up you obligation as a tester (IE, you actually submitted bug reports, driver issues, usability issues) on a consistant basis, you would have nothing to worry about ... MS was very friendly to those who actually helped and understood what a beta was for. Lets just say that my LEGAL copy of Vista Ultimate didnt cost a dime.
If you're just a moocher who was looking for a free version of Vista to play with, but didnt feel the need to actually contribute, then its your problem, not theirs...you didnt "help" them at all... why should they thank you, if anything, you should thank microsoft for giving you something for nothing. - Tetrabiblos, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"It's a freaking beta, this type of 'situation' isn't new to anyone (Who is testing software) and they do offer help, while the beta expires they still let you log in and backup files, etc until August (Though at limited sessions), etc."
Yep, anyone testing software knows the way out of the situation. - shanesemler, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11I'm a Ubuntu user but this kind of comment is idiotic and pointless. Like, for example, a Gentoo user popping up in a Ubuntu thread and saying "Ubuntu is teh sux0rz!111" Find something better to do with your time, like look at porn or install a wing plane on your car backwards.
- ever, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@schestowitz
Jeez. I understand you're pretty obsessed in things like this but seriously you should ease up a little :D.. Going through all the stories you've submitted brings to mind people who post about reptilians, alien abductions and the Illuminati on some freakish new age forums.
Couldn't spot any "newly leaked antitrust memos" about how to avoid Microsoft's mind control devices with a tinfoil hat though.. - salmonmoose, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Update your java ;)
Java 1.6 is optimised for Vista - to the point where it's actually pleasant to use java applications now. - newbill123, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13Oh God, I'm coming dowwwnnn. Next time, I've got to remember the first hit isn't REALLY free. Right now though, I've gotta get another tab before I run out of Aero.
- shanesemler, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10You do realize that Linux does the same thing don't you? Running as administrator isn't a smart thing to do, even on OS X.
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Google desktop is no where near as nice as the start menu search in Vista.
- spyderfreek2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Headsets do work, just need the drivers that come with your receiver, i didn't realize that for a while and had the same problem.
Its windows....if it doesnt work....look for a driver! - cquinnd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7orbit1979, it's called sarcasm. You might notice it in comparison to GawtMilk's other posts.
- sid0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6OK, I'll bite.
You can ctrl-mousewheel on the desktop to change the size of icons, just as you can in a web browser to change the size of text.
You asked for one thing, you got it. Of course, this isn't the ONLY thing. Just the easiest to verify.
Oh, and things like Superfetch are a *huge* improvement over their XP/Linux versions. - cquinnd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Once again, beta testers *who contributed* did get a chance to have a valid license for Vista.
You add something to the process, you get the reward. You add nothing to the process, you get back what you put in (a nice steamy pile). - AcidPhysx, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11DX10. Sooner or later.
- ever, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5We managed to run AutoCAD 2007, Viz, Revit and 3dsmax 9 on Vista in our company but yeah, it's tacky. They need to be ran as admin and with a few tweaks. The Autodesk 2008 suite works perfectly on Vista though :).
- cquinnd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You failed to send one the first time.
- phoomp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Buried for inaccuracty. *Vista* is not set to expire May 31. Vista *Beta* is set to expire May 31.
- GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -8/+11Windows is exactly like a prison, only it's a special prison that earns my income and lets me leave any time I want.
- cquinnd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Two minor things (like sid0's example):
When opening the Computer shortcut (not "My Computer" anymore), the top level view of drives on the system adds a bar graph to indicate how full the storage space has become, and you can sort and filter that display based on name, type, total size, free space, filesystem, comments, network location, and percent full. Filtering is helpful when you just want to see (for example) all the drives that have less than 10% free space, to know which parts of your storage need to be cleared out and optimized.
When downloading a file linked from a web site, if you create a new directory in the file save dialog for the download to go into, the system is smart enough now to automatically drop into that directory without needed extra navigation, and will try to remember that directory as the download default until the user changes it. - sifelltneytandi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why did you guys did GawtMilk down? Because you're idiots?
- thebigkevdogg, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10those RC's were so buggy it's for your own good.
- thespace2, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6GawtMilk - Take a vacation, you deserve it.
- justice7, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5@schestowitz
what are you some kind of open source nazi?
well, judging by your name....................................... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Im tired of all the retards sayin "My apps dont work in Vista so it sux" Its not Vista thats the problem.its your gay ass aps.
- Enlightenment, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1All Microsoft beta's have time lock out, so this isn't anything new!!!
- Enlightenment, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I still can't belive that it is almost May 2007, and lots of vendors don't have their software ported to Vista. During all of 2006 it was obvious that Vista was coming!!! What the hell is your flipping problem???
- Swift2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gee, I guess I can just dump that Vista VM from my Mac, then.
- crazyboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ topgunhomer....

Back to iTunes.
- Incognito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Reminds me when the berlin wall came down
- spyderfreek2k, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4No, there is an RC1 and RC2 fix though......But i dont see why you would use either.....they were worse than Windows ME.
- yoyar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Try Ubuntu on the live CD so that you can see how easy it is. You don't have to dread installing Linux anymore. Please trust Yoyar. You can try it our right now without touching your existing system by using the live CD. http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

It appears that there was supposed to be an update from MS to add those bluetooth profiles. If the device or system manufacturer has provided bluetooth drivers of their own, they might also update the profiles allowing headsets and other devices to work.
Meanwhile, you can also check some online guides for workarounds to get other profiles to work:
http://blogs.tech-recipes.com/seamonkey420/2007/04/17/hp-tc1100-vista-and-bluetooth-problems-and-fix - MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Ew. Going back to XP? It's like going back to Windows 3.11 from Windows 95, totally a step in the wrong direction.
- Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thats why smart People (devs, vendors, gov, people with limited budgets) stick with the old version of windows until the bugs are kinked out
its alot safer and cheaper in the long run
Never buy new stuff when it first comes out - cquinnd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 The Easy Way for anyone testing an OS would have been to dual boot, or install Vista on a separate hard drive altogether.
Or, for those with driveimage, ghost, trueimage or some other products, to restore from the system image you made before installing the beta software.
If you didn't do a Backup first, then you weren't clear on the concept of beta testing. - r3drum, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2back to XP just in time. How can you release an OS with so many major applications still having problems? I am willing to sacrifice compatibility for a much improved OS, but since most of the major improvements are left hanging for the next version, I don't want to have to rely on each of my application companies to release patches. Please tell me one thing I can do on Vista, that I can't on XP?
- cquinnd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Doesn't apply to the beta.
- MrViklund, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2OK? And this made the news...
