- FearlessFreep, on 11/14/2007, -2/+32Hint - to write anything worth reading you have to experience a life worth reading about.
- inactive, on 11/13/2007, -3/+23"By removing the safety net, you have no alternative but to succeed." sigh..... where do people come up with this *****? Um actually by removing the safety net you can fail or succeed. It's actually a very simple concept that anyone with an iq higher than 70 can grasp.
- jwhicks727, on 11/13/2007, -3/+22Wow, thanks, Tony Robbins!
- FearlessFreep, on 11/13/2007, -0/+18My dad once said that a service economy is where everybody is flipping each other's burgers

- banastas, on 11/13/2007, -0/+12how can you be a pro-blogger w/out pro-hosting??
- jdroth, on 11/13/2007, -1/+12Awesome comment, combas. I'm the author of the blog that's been dugg (and downed) here. Blogging is *not* my one true calling. But writing is. I've wanted to be a writer since I was in the fourth grade, writing stories about guys who lived on the moon. I never thought I'd write a blog, especially one about personal finance. Even now it seems strange. But that's what I'm doing. I *am* lucky that it can support me, no question. Who knows how long it can continue to do so? But I'd kick myself later if I didn't at least try to make a go of it. Who knows? Maybe I can turn the blog into a book.
As for the complaints about the site being down -- yeah, yeah. Guys, I'm not dugg every day. In fact, it happens only about once a month. I can't maintain a server just for diggers. I already pay through the nose for this server. It usually holds up fine. Sorry it's down. - scotticus, on 11/13/2007, -2/+13A real service economy is where everybody is tossing each other's salads.
- thundacracka, on 11/13/2007, -3/+14...but if you combine Wordpress and Digg, no one will see.
- inactive, on 11/13/2007, -1/+9What?
- Chompy, on 11/13/2007, -2/+10What books do I have to buy?
- bigthree, on 12/03/2007, -4/+12if i could quit my day job I would love to! Make my own hours - get out what i put in.....a dream come true.
- goldenrule1027, on 11/13/2007, -9/+16The majority of Americans go "through the motions" in our daily work lives and wonder "is this it?" Where is the passion, excitement and danger? Many folks like yourself have quit the "day job" and pursued their dreams while they still have a majority of their life expectancy left. Go for it! By removing the safety net, you have no alternative but to succeed.
- xtc46, on 11/13/2007, -0/+6im sure its actually easier to fail than to succeed..
- xtc46, on 11/14/2007, -1/+7good job supporting your spouse. It would be nice if more people were in a position to do what they love and earn a living doing it.
- kermit4karate, on 11/13/2007, -1/+7I think it takes a lot longer than 6 months to get to where one can live off their blog income....
- inactive, on 11/13/2007, -0/+6Because techpunk has a lot of "friends" that give each other Diggs without having to read each other's submissions.
Are you actually still under the impression that stories make it to the front page based on the CONTENT of the article? If so, what exactly put you into that 16 month coma you've been in. - techpunk, on 11/13/2007, -3/+9I agree...but if you have husband/wife or kids...wow. I think building towards it is a great idea.
- David513, on 11/13/2007, -1/+7They have every right to TRY, but it doesn't mean it's smart. And it doesn't mean they have any reasonable chance of succeeding. With a lot of these people, it's like a typical former high school football player quitting his job for a life of trying out at NFL camps. It might make a cute human-interest story, but it's not a reasonable choice.
- tyler71, on 11/13/2007, -2/+7Just as a side note, don't ever use wordpress if you plan to follow through with this blogging idea. may i suggest having a server that can take a heavy user hit?
- jdroth, on 11/13/2007, -1/+6Bah! My hosting company says there's nothing they can do unless I upgrade to Super Deluxe Server X. Funny. I thought that by paying for *this* server, that was going to solve the problems when diggers came knocking. How come paying $200/month for a server gets the same results as a $20/month server. Anyone have hosting recommendations?
Also -- I write a personal finance blog. It's not some scammy, spammy thing. It's about checking accounts and Roth IRAs and boring ***** like that. If you want to learn how to buy a used car, you can find info at my site. But SEO? Optimizing Adsense? That stuff is a mystery to me. If I knew what the hell I was doing, I'd be making a lot more money.
Sorry about the server troubles. They should settle out in about an hour. - combas, on 11/13/2007, -2/+7I think there is a lot to be said for following your passions, but how many people can honestly say that blogging is there one true calling and love at first site passion. I think most are in it because of the "gold rush" mentality thinking they might just get lucky.
- KSUdesigner, on 11/13/2007, -1/+6Get a job and quit mooching off the system. Deaf people can do plenty of jobs just as well as people with perfectly good hearing can. I'm sorry you're deaf, that sucks, but there are plenty of deaf people in this world that are capable of, and are, holding a job.
- londubh, on 11/13/2007, -0/+5Yeah, we already have enough bloggers. What we really need is more lawyers.
- David513, on 11/13/2007, -1/+5Sometimes, you're not showing "guts" to do something like that. Many times, it's pure stupidity to think you can do it. The number of people who can make a living from blogging is pretty darn small, but too many "me too" writers think they can pull it off simply because they want to.
- cozb, on 11/13/2007, -2/+6i would say "...simply because they want to.." is damn good enough to do it. More power to them.
- MadHarvey, on 11/13/2007, -1/+5Yes, but most people with an IQ higher than 80 decided to take the non literal translation of the post, which boils down to "you'll try a lot ***** harder if your livelihood is on the line"
- airj1012, on 11/13/2007, -0/+4How is this story still getting dugg when the site is down and there hasn't been a mirror yet? Doesn't make a lot of sense to me
- theprogrammer, on 11/13/2007, -2/+6I'm all for the sentiment of quitting one's day job to pursue a passion, but please, for the love of god, do something more useful than blogging.
- BobCock, on 11/13/2007, -1/+5i wish more of the blogs that are out there were written by people who have degrees or experience in writing.
- SuperMoses, on 11/13/2007, -0/+4The world needs both.
- inactive, on 11/13/2007, -0/+4Stuff that they feel like talking about. Theres a name for it it's called blogging.
- lerker, on 11/13/2007, -0/+3Surely you're not serious. *More* bloggers rehashing the same old rubbish? That's the last thing we need.
- xtc46, on 11/13/2007, -0/+3He actually writes about what he is doing. It's a blog about being frugal, and basically talks about how he has gone from extreme debt to a fair amount of wealth. He also has several guest bloggers who are the guys you probably want to be.
- inactive, on 11/13/2007, -0/+3The fun will come when the ad sense bubble bursts similar to the dot com burst of 2000 and all these people now have nothing to show for the last few years of their lives.
- lerker, on 11/13/2007, -0/+3I wish more of the blogs that are out there were written by people who decide to give up blogging today.
- 3tcp, on 11/14/2007, -0/+3Here's a tip for personal finance: don't spend all your time reading blogs, work instead.
- doublehead, on 11/13/2007, -3/+6Glad you added the "not over night" part. Its good to see other honest people :)
- xtc46, on 11/13/2007, -1/+4try reading the blog... then comment.
- upfront06, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2Tip #1: Create a site that can actually withstand being dugg. Guess I'll never know the secret
- airj1012, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2Pretty interesting. I know that AT LEAST 100 diggs came after the site was down (when I checked it). The likelihood of the site actually being down before I checked it is pretty high. So how can a story get 100 diggs when no one is able to access it's content and see what the story is about? I'd say having 600+ "friends" and sending shouts to their profiles is a good start.
Quitting the Day Job: Finding the Guts to Pursue Your Dream by Pro Blogging
-techpunk sent a shout to *friend* 6 hr 1 min ago
-Wouldn't we all like to blog for a job? Please Digg :)
I changed the name of the friend to keep it confidential but if you want proof, just look through some of techpunk's friends.
MORE SPAM, BURRIED. - kirab, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2I see what you did there... and every other article you've commented on.
- inactive, on 11/13/2007, -4/+6Yes it takes time, glad you added that. I have been blogging consistently now for a little over 45 days, and have developed a small following. The key is consistent posting, relevant content, and let it roll. Good Digg!!
- xtc46, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2what if you just get the side salad at Jack in the Box? best dollar ever
- xtc46, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2thats wrong. I think everyone SHOULD save up and plan well so they can retire early or quit their day job to do what they love.
- kirab, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2Dugg for sass.
- xtc46, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2depends on the blog. But yea, it would be stupid to go from nothing to blogging to only blogging for income.
- sineyopitty, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2You've misunderstood me. I say "retire" early because you don't really stop working if you retire early and do what you love, you just switch to a different, albeit, much more satisfying line of work.
- smart394, on 11/13/2007, -4/+6Yeah, I'd rather quit trying to *be* somebody and become someone who just talks/writes about what others are doing.. sure... I'll get right on that..
