- agentsrecord, on 03/17/2009, -0/+13Wikis are awesome as long as they are regulated. One time I was on Wikipedia looking up Spiderman facts and one of them was 'spiderman is a fag'.
- rationalist, on 03/17/2009, -0/+7Wikis are wonderful - but this PCWorld piece is a puff PR piece for a particular vendor.
- Chairboy, on 03/17/2009, -1/+3I've set up a couple of Wikis at work that have been moderately successful with the management concern issue being the biggest roadblock. There's a real discomfort in many organizations with the perception that they're giving up top-down control.
The first managers that really got behind it are the ones who realize "Hey, we're paying people for a certain level of competence, right? Why try to do all the work ourselves when we can be getting more value for those skills?"
The next group of managers said "Hey, the employees know MORE about a lot of this stuff than we do. Let's do it!"
Different motivations, but the same end result.
Interestingly, the most succesful wiki I set up was just a few days ago for a computer game I'm passionate about. It's amazing how quickly it grew compared to the work-wiki. When you really care about a subject, motivation can really make a difference. - Shmebber, on 03/17/2009, -0/+2Did you even read the article?
- andyroo316, on 03/17/2009, -0/+1Didn't you see her television show?!
It was AWESOME!!@! - findhostcoupons, on 03/22/2009, -0/+1Wiki is told to be a good software, but we are still using Active Collabe
- CodeMaster123, on 03/17/2009, -0/+1BTW wiki is not a silly name
- efeaheny, on 04/12/2009, -0/+1All wikis, simply, are not the same... there is a wide spectrum - Wiki platforms vary GREATLY in capabilities, features, methodologies, ways to solve some of the management issues described, etc., etc.... So, if you are going to invest time into creating content on a wiki which will grow in value, then get the right tool for the job. Don't waste your employees time using a wiki that is not feature full enough to do an enterprise-level job. You are building intellectual value in that content - do it well.
- chriscalifornia, on 03/31/2009, -1/+1I thought it said 'Put Kiwis to Work'. About bloody time...
- mycoplasma, on 03/17/2009, -1/+1No, forcing them to be in the Star Wars Christmas special is cruel.
- Hodor, on 03/16/2009, -2/+2On my projects, I've been trying to get us to use wiki's more. The question I get most often is "What if somebody changes something on me?" I /facepalm, usually.
- judicar, on 03/17/2009, -4/+3I read it as "Putting Whoopi to work" and I was all like "DAMN, that bitch hasn't done anything in forever".
- scamper22, on 03/17/2009, -2/+0Wikis are amazing.
But the biggest issue we run into at work is where to put information.
Old document management system?
Wiki?
Notes in source control?
Run now, we're underusing wikis as far as I'm concerned. Someone made the decision to only put stuff that changes often on the wiki. It ends up resembling a newsletter.
It all looks simple until you get multiple teams and ideologies involved :P - 1x253, on 03/17/2009, -7/+1Putting wookies to work just sounds cruel! They are NOT beasts of burden; they are God's creatures! This nonsense must be put to an end!!
FREE THE WOOKIES!!!
Emily Litella - syntaxgs, on 03/17/2009, -7/+1I don,t real lee see the point of having dictionary for collaborate??
