C:/Windows/System32/paint.exe - Anrkist, on 10/11/2007, -5/+122I can see someone going for an interview now... "So, what software are you proficient in?" "Paint.net!"
- MemeWarrior, on 10/11/2007, -9/+118I've never had any problems with CS3, but I was willing to hear him out on his complaints. But after reading his moaning and bitching about off the topic subjects like him being sick I just gave up and came to the conclusion that the writer is just one of those overly dramatic people who likes to complain. I hate whiners. Next time, just get the the point without all the unnecessary drama.

- allywilson, on 10/11/2007, -9/+86Slashes all wrong. Don't try to deny your *NIX heritage. The thirst always wins.
- byronm, on 10/11/2007, -9/+75How can you take anything seriously when it starts out with "i wish apple would buy it". For those of us who are not Mac Users i think the relevency of that statement immediatly implies a self limiting and self centered approach to computing irregardless of what anyone else would have to say as if you already know it all.
- YodaGuy5, on 10/11/2007, -37/+99What about Paint.net? Its free, easy to use, and and gets the job done for most user. It may not have all the features, but hey.
Here's a link:
http://www.getpaint.net/index2.html - BrandonMills, on 10/11/2007, -6/+65Gimp is still RGB only last time I checked. That alone makes it unsuitable for a Photoshop replacement.
- BrandonMills, on 10/11/2007, -4/+62I think they mean something that is actually on Photoshop's level with respect to professional photo editing. For most people, Paint.Net is fine.
- thedonga, on 10/11/2007, -10/+68photoshop CS3 rocks....the black and white conversion is fantastic, the smart sharpen is phenomenal, head and shoulders above all the other photo manipulation software out there. This guy just likes to whine.
- HunterTV, on 10/11/2007, -5/+54For Mac users reading this, it's not out yet, but it looks promising: http://www.pixelmator.com/
- geekchic, on 10/11/2007, -5/+51I tend to use PaintShopPro - as I only do basic stuff, I can open PSP - do the work and save the file in the time it took me to just open Photoshop.

- RyeBrye, on 10/11/2007, -1/+31"I've used Photoshop since it had a year in the title"
Photoshop never had a year in the title. Illustrator 88 did, but Photoshop 1.0 didn't come out until 1990 on the mac. It had version numbers up until CS.
Yes, I HAVE been using Photoshop since version 2 so I do know a thing or two about it :) [that's not to say I don't want to see some form of competition... it's definitely gotten stale and very pricey] - futureb, on 10/11/2007, -6/+33good luck avoiding adobe.
*cough* FLASH *cough cough* - alexw, on 10/11/2007, -6/+31What's wrong with GIMP? The interface *is* what's wrong. It might be a powerful image editing program, but it's useless if you can't navigate it easily.
- coldphoenix, on 10/11/2007, -14/+37What is he rambling on about? Photoshop, in its entirety, has to be one of the most phenomenal pieces of software in the world today. It's one of the very few applications I find to be absolutely worth its enormous price tag. The wealth and maturity of its codebase, and plethora of features, clean and intuitive interface...is enough to make any competitor tremble in the tracks at the sight of such a daunting task. Its not that I'm against competition, its excellent for the market, but I just don't see anyone catchin up anytime soon.
- foooey, on 10/11/2007, -1/+23Print will be around for far longer than any of us will
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+28The closed source nature of CMYK is getting in there way there, if they included it in Gimp then they'd have to charge for each unit.
However this only affects print media, Gimp works just fine for all web design and multimedia presentations. - Kazbaeden, on 10/11/2007, -6/+28But the people who use use photoshop professionally (read: they actually paid for it) will typically want to print out what they create. Again, we're back to GIMP being a gimp.
- awhiteflame, on 10/11/2007, -3/+24What's that supposed to mean?
Flash really needs to die. I don't know why people keep using it. - stevenmu, on 10/11/2007, -3/+23One problem with the GIMP is that it doesn't support the colour formats needed by a lot professionals who deal with printing (CMYK I think it's called). Not being anywhere close to a pro, and not ever beign likely to need to get anything I do printed professionally it doesn't matter to me and I love the GIMP, but for some it's an absolute must.
- DesScorp, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20The GIMP is nice for a free product, but is nowhere in Photoshop's league for professional work. For one thing, it doesn't have the color range that professional apps do (IIRC, GIMP has 8 bit color...or at least it did). The GIMP is great for personal, amateur image work, but most professionals would never rely on it. Plus, GIMP for Windows is absolutely horrible (and unstable).
- MioTheGreat, on 10/11/2007, -6/+23"Yeah but it performs really poorly on a mac. People still use Windows?"
Yeah. Only, you know, like 90+% of the world.... - Smuikas, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17For professional illustration and design, especially for print work (CMYK color support), GIMP is sorely lacking. For amateur design, illustration, photo manip, etc - it's absolutely perfect. But as the poster above said, it's like comparing a moped to a car. They're both great to drive around town, but only one of them is useful for driving a couple hundred miles.
- fpcyber, on 10/11/2007, -4/+20I like Corel's applications, Paint Shop Pro to be a little more specific. Pretty powerful stuff, Photoshop plugins work with it and not as much of a memory hog.
- twinklyJesus, on 10/11/2007, -3/+19Superwienner:
"However this only affects print media, Gimp works just fine for all web design and multimedia presentations."
The majority of Adobe's business is still the printing and digital printing industry, not web design.
sorry. - Scruffydan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17and i guess open file formats that interoperate well are too much to ask for
- BrandonMills, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17I think it's more of a pricing complaint. Same could be said for Microsoft Office, really.
- Salgat, on 10/11/2007, -10/+25GIMP doesn't count because its free, and we all know free software=inferior(I hope people can detect the sarcasm here).
- ahecht, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17I use paint.net regularly, but until it can do soft brushes and can feather selections, I still have to use Photoshop on a regular basis.
- maxsunset, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14he didnt even have anything to say about the program itself, just his experience buying it. lame.
- chris9902, on 10/11/2007, -3/+17just a side note: ever notice how god looks like he is sat in a brain, as if to say god comes from the mind.
- puelocesar, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16Gimp 2.3 has CMYK and some Photoshop features, like ']' e '[' hotkeys for resizing the brushes (the last one was critical for my wife)
It has some glitches and usability problems yet, but it's much better than actual release. - inajeep, on 10/11/2007, -8/+22Ok, why the Gimp hate? I've used Photoshop lightly for the last 5 or so years. I can't get it in my current department because of a combination of budget and politics. I tried Serif Photoplus 6.0 which is free and fine for resizing and minor things. Someone suggested Gimp so I tried 2.0 version and I'm happy w/ it. It loads much faster that Photoshop did (I haven't tried CS3) and can use it at home without feeling like a pirate. I needed a plug-in to open RAW images from my Canon 30D and it opened and was able to edit them directly. I have no complaints so far and recommend it.
- Ninjab3ar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13What annoys me about CS3 is the amount of hard drive space it takes. Where CS2 took about 3 gigs, CS3 takes 6!! Im on a laptop, and sometimes things like that matter when you dont have the luxury of having an internal 500GB hard drive
- Dorkbot101, on 07/15/2009, -4/+17Competition would be good: The price would go down and they would listen to the users more closely.
Why not? No one really wants to complete with a codebase as mature and well developed as photoshop.
The Gimp is on it's way to becoming usable in a production environment though. A massive UI revision and cmyk support would definitely give it that 'edge' - noverflow, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Prices higher? Like when they bought shake? It went from being 10K with a yearly license to $2500 with no yearly. But I do completely agree that it would kill it.
- dbr_onix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Nope, it just doesn't escape them before making the comments "safe", if you double the back-slashes up it works fine..
C:\WINDOWS\System32\paint.exe - pxlpshr, on 09/04/2008, -14/+25sorry but you're incorrect. CS3 is the best version of photoshop and their entire suite to date. flagged for lameness.
- drakaan, on 10/11/2007, -14/+25Yeah! If it won't run on a mac, it's not real software. Please.
Witty retort aside, Paint.NET has improved by leaps and bounds over the past 2 years (time between my first try at using it and my most recent). It's got a decent interface, it's fairly intuitive, it uses a very open license, the source code is available, and there's an active user community ( http://paintdotnet.12.forumer.com ) developing plugins, tutorials, and art using it.
If you happen to have a PC that runs Windows XP or Vista (32 or 64 bit), giving it a try won't hurt. Absolutely unbeatable at the price. - awhiteflame, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13"Apple would make prices go high,"
You obviously have not seen Adobe's prices. - lengau, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12That's because the church had to draw over the original painting, because it didn't follow what they believed. An image of what is believed to have been there originally is at http://www.venganza.org/images/wallpapers/noodledoodle1280_1024.jpg
- doshindude, on 10/11/2007, -7/+17the REAL world uses Windows.
- PRlME, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10what should they use then?
- migitalwarfare, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9you have to go through the alpha phase before you can get to beta testing
- TheG2, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9You are missing the point of CMYK if thats all you can come up with.
http://en.allexperts.com/q/Adobe-Photoshop-1028/CMYK.htm - noverflow, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Actually, they could. Apple is worth almost 5 times adobe right now. Adobe's market cap is only about 24billion right now. And if a 20 billion dollar company can buy a 4 billion dollar company(macromedia) why couldn't apple buy adobe?
