- praveenmarkandu, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14Crap. it might be just me. but the Final Release crashes when i try to run the app. the beta 7 worked great though
- craftyguy, on 10/12/2007, -78/+13Still no support for video chat... boo..
- praveenmarkandu, on 10/12/2007, -12/+39@craftyguy
your reply has nothing to do with my comment. take your place in line please :| - pifko87, on 10/12/2007, -55/+1stfu diggmaster
- ramd3z, on 10/12/2007, -7/+54You're correct praveenmarkandu. Comment hijacking stinks! BTW I can't print from ubuntu to my epson r200 printer, any suggestions?
- ScottyMo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Mine also crashes.. and it uninstalled my previous version of GAIM so I can't even go back! :(
- cjdaniel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2ScottyMo:

Older versions are still available. - Dolomite, on 10/12/2007, -13/+1ever since they changed the name from gaim this program went downhill. frequent crashes and very buggy... i wish the old devs would come back and make it gaim again.
- pompom246, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17If you're crashing, try getting a crashlog and submitting it to the developers. That's how free software gets fixed and gets better.
- praveenmarkandu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3fixed it. Removed everything. all the old gaim files in application data and all
- nayr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Dolomite: nothing different except for the name. Same devs, same code.
- Pause, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1if you have any gtk+ themes installed, you might want to get rid of them, and also you should put all of your modded/hacked elements back to normal if you have any in gaim.
- jleibowitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Windows builds are up now, along with the cross platform source
- adolfojp, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Does this version have custom emoticons or the ability to choose the spell check language? I would really love to see those features.
- jspath, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@adolfojp
The installer has an option to download and install an integrated spellchecker in a variety of languages. It's very nice.
As far as emoticons go, they have support for custom smiley theme packs, although they can be a bit hard to find. I believe their upcoming site redesign will make it much easier to find, download, and install different smiley themes.
- Theis, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Is it possible to get a .deb file for Ubuntu 7.04 ?
- DevastatorIIC, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21It looks like they only released .rpm-s for the other releases. Someone may eventually do it, and it'll eventually make its way into the repos.
In the meantime,
sudo apt-get build-dep gaim
wget http://superb-east.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/pidgin/pidgin-2.0.0.tar.bz2
tar xf pidgin-2.0.0.tar.bz2
cd pidgin-2.0.0
./configure && make && sudo make install - motang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11@theis You should get an update in a few days, so just wait for it.
- heathenx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4download the rpm and use alien to convert it to a .deb file. give it a try.
sudo apt-get install alien (install alien)
sudo alien -k package_name.rpm (convert rpm to deb) - kazamx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1thanks for that. I always wondered how to make a .deb
- Kagarrache, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've compiled it myself without many problems. I only needed two dev files and go.
I've installed it with checkinstall instead of "make install", and I still have the file, so, if yo want a deb file for AMD64, I could send it to you. But believe me, it's not the hardest one to install. - hotsake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@Devastator,
Thanks for the note about build-dep. I initially tried to configure the source and got this error:
"checking for perl... /usr/bin/perl
checking for XML::Parser... configure: error: XML::Parser perl module is required for intltool"
and had no idea what to do at that point. I'll have to remember to check my build dependencies in the future. :) - macoafi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://rapidshare.com/files/29533296/pidgin_2.0.0-1_i386.deb.html

Feisty builds - Megaqwerty22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Out of curiosity, how did you get it to work with checkinstall? I keep getting this error when installing the package:
dpkg: error processing pidgin_2.0.0-1_i386.deb (--install):
trying to overwrite `/usr/bin/ld', which is also in package binutils
dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe)
Errors were encountered while processing:

- tinker123, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?sourceid=Mozilla-search&va=pidgin
Main Entry: pid·gin
Pronunciation: 'pi-j&n
Function: noun
Etymology: pidgin English
: a simplified speech used for communication between people with different languages - tinker123, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I remember years ago I discovered that on windows you can't have cygwin in your path, gaim installed, and have both work. I asked the developer about it ( quite nasty fellow ) and he said that both projects had a DLL of the same name. I used cygwin a lot so I uninstalled gaim. Since he went to all of the trouble to rename gaim I hope he renamed that DLL so fans of his software can use it on their windows boxes without sacrificing cygwin.
- patik, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4Sounds like you should run Linux. Seriously, if you use cygwin that much, just run Ubuntu so those tools are a bit more native, and run your Windows-only apps in Wine, Crossover Office, or a virtual machine (Virtual Box is free).
- litolist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I've always had both installed...what version Cygwin do you use?
- karmajunkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I think they've fixed the issue several months ago... I've got both installed with no problems. If that still causes problems, install the version of gaim from http://portableapps.com, it's self-contained.
- ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7@patik
Why should he run Linux? I run Cygwin on all my windows (Vista) boxes too, and there's no way in hell I'm converting them to Linux. Why? Because they're expensive gaming rigs, and I love iTunes, and windows media center, and tons of other things about the Windows/Vista world.
I run cygwin because it gives me the tools I am used to from Linux, which I have also been a user of for a long time. With cygwin, I can run Vista, and still have bash/perl/python scripting, wget, rsync, diff, etc. - meatloafsurpriz, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2I use both on my laptop without any problems. Are you sure you're not a dumbass?
- Agrajag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You can have both installed, just keep cygwin out of windows's %PATH% environment variable. If you want to run cygwin programs, do it from bash.
It's not up to the developers of pidgin to rename the tcl library, it has a standard name so you know what it is. - spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"he said that both projects had a DLL of the same name"
Windows devs know this as DLL hell. Cross-platform devs whose main focus is not MS OSes rarely care to jump through hoops to avoid this. - tinker123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@patik - I do use linux....AT HOME. I have no choice about what I use at work.
@karmajunkie
- I laughed when you told me that fixed the DLL situation a few months ago. The problem existed for years.
- gniess, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4Is there an option in Pidgin for windows to not display a tab for the buddy list in the taskbar?
- bwzippy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@ gniess
Tools, Preferences, Show system tray icon...set that to Always, then hit the X to put the app in the tray. - imjosh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The solution by bwzippy isn't what I am looking for and I don't think it is what gniess wants either.
With Pidgin can you have your contact list showing and not in the taskbar, similar to how trillian works? - combatchuck, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10trillian works?
- bigdoof, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Download Extended Preferences from the Pidgin plug-in page. There's an option for "Show buddy list entry in taskbar"
- gniess, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thanks, the extended preferences plugin is exactly what I wanted.
- vh1`, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2check out devilspie. it allows you to do that sort of thing for any application
- bwzippy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@ gniess
- falcon1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Anyone know if it is possible to have 1.5 and 2.0 installed at the same time? I prefer 1.5's interface, but file transfers only work with 2.0. Thanks
- snipes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I still use an old aim for transfers...they've been spotty up until Beta 6 as far as I've seen, so maybe I'll be able to get rid of Aim soon.
- bwzippy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Are there any encryption modules yet for Pidgin 2.0.0? I used the gaim-encryption module and it worked well..
- ahill7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@bwzippy
Perhaps OTR will be compatible? - evands, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OTR will be updated for Pidgin 2.0.0; someone has already commented on the OTR dev list that they got it working on 2.0.0b7, so a release shouldn't be too far behind.
- ahill7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@bwzippy
- bambala, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22finally. Now in 10 years maybe we will see Pidgin 3.0
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So true....the damn thing was in beta forever... and was essentially stable and complete as of beta 5.
- nullx42, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9I'm sticking with Gaim 2.0 b6 as my little way of saying "***** you, AOL"
http://oldversion.com/program.php?n=gaim (only back to beta 2 but ***** it) - MrSpontaneous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What's new in version 2.0? I can't seem to find the changelog.
- isleshocky77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Two really nice features I've notice are:
1.) They added an option at install to allow you to have the URI's aim:, yahoo:, irc: actually open up in gaim (pidgin, on of these days I'll stop calling it gaim).
2.) They added a pluging to go with Buddy Bounces so that it now has the same functionality of the newest aim where if you send an im to someone who is offline, it saves it as a bounce and sends the message again automatically when the user signs back online.
I also have been using only gaim for about 3 years now. I believe since Beta 6 of gaim, file transferred have worked. Sometimes it takes a minute to get started but it does go through. Also in pidgin they've done a lot to make all the services on your buddy list look uniform. Overall I'm pleased with the new "Pidgin".
As for a comment above the newest 2.0 release worked fine for me. - evands, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A ton! See http://developer.pidgin.im/browser/ChangeLog for the full list.
- isleshocky77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Two really nice features I've notice are:
- ahill7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I just finished the install, and I am very impressed that it retained all my settings and preferences from GAIM. Even remembered my previous Status message.
- cphuntington97, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Ars Technica review: http://feeds.arstechnica.com/~r/arstechnica/BAaf/~3/114047986/pidgin-2-0.ars
- Jotaro, on 11/01/2007, -1/+5Do aim chat rooms work now? They haven't in GAIM 1.5 nor in the Pidgin 2.0 beta. This is really the only thing stopping me from using this full-time.
- gr4yscale, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22aim chat rooms? why, seriously, why?
- bobothn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17@gr4yscale
How else can he get on to catch a predator. - iSEPIC, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5"aim chat rooms? why, seriously, why?"--- Number one way to find girls!
- MrSpontaneous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@gr4yscale: you want to talk to group of friends - best way to do that is invite them into a user created chat. Its great for collaboration (seeing as everyone has AIM and you don't need to install software/create accounts on websites).
- b3mus3d, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2A/S/L?
- JSchwage, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Until there's video and audio support I'll just stick with Meebo. This really just ticks me off though. They promised audio and video support in version 2.0, but of course it isn't in 2.0.
- coyotejones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4While I totally sympathize with the expectation of getting Video/Voice support, it's hardly a trivial feature to be added. There is still ongoing work to try and support this. As an open-source project, Pidgin has more limited resources than Yahoo!, AIM, etc, and often have to reverse-engineer a lot of things to make a compatible client.
- macoafi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They were too busy trying not to be destroyed by AOL's vulch--uh, lawyers.
- nick0909, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8***** finally.
- jaytee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Am I missing something, or is there no way to add a Jabber account in this version?
- DAMU, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Crap! you're right, what happened to Jabber?
dam - DAMU, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Nevermind, XMPP is Jabber.
dam - f0ad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4jaytee & damu:
XMPP ....IS jabber. It's the name of the protocol.
They started calling it XMPP because Jabber isn't the only system to use it, Google Talk also use XMPP.
Since instead of adding Jabber and Google Talk, they started calling it by it's protocol name. - praveenmarkandu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Jabber is listed as XMPP. all your contacts should load fine
- DAMU, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Crap! you're right, what happened to Jabber?
- Rethcir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Did they fix the thing with the green dots yet? I really liked being able to see my contacts based on the service they are running
- Malachai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't think they're planning to. This bothered me at first, but I've learned to like it.
Of course, when you hover over a contact, it will show, and you can always set the alias to "John Doe (AIM)" or something. - macoafi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Fix" it? It's a feature, not a bug, though I suppose you could argue misfeature.
- Malachai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't think they're planning to. This bothered me at first, but I've learned to like it.
- chr1831, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1how do I install ssl support for pidgin?, msn wont connect :'(, and there site is down :'(
- xoai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sudo apt-get install libgnutls-dev
download nss-3.11.tar.gz nspr-4.6.tar.gz from mozilla
Copy SSL library files to proper locations /usr/local/lib
Then
./configure --enable-gnutls=yes --with-nss-includes=/root/downloads/nss-3.9/include --with-nspr-includes=/root/downloads/nspr-4.4.1/include --with-nss-libs=/root/downloads/nss-3.9/lib --with-nspr-libs=/root/downloads/nspr-4.4.1/lib
And make && make install as usual - foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1LAWL!!!
well, that sounds easy; and it's a wonder why more people don't use linux!
btw, gaim (or pidgin or wtf ever they want to call it) hasn't worked with msn in ***** AGES!!
do yourself a favor and get trillian. ;)
- xoai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sudo apt-get install libgnutls-dev
- Megatog615, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is it just me or did their site just bomb?
- NovaPrime9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Is there no way to adjust the size of the fonts? I know you can use larger formatted fonts, but that just sends your 'buddies' HUGE messages. What I need is a larger font just on my end. My eyes suck. I've had this problem with GAIM, too, and I would keep trying until finally giving up and going back to bloatware/Trillian. Any help? Please?
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Assuming you're talking about Windows, for some dumb reason you have to modify some text files in the GTK directories. You can't change the font through the GUI. You'd think this would be a feature of 1.0.
Miranda IM FTW if you use Windows! It's modular and full of tweakable options. It's the FireFox of IM clients. - NovaPrime9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks for the recommendation- I'm actually trying Miranda out right now. I've attempted the GTK edits in GAIM with no luck. What a PITA.
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When I used to use GAIM my default font size was 6pt so I know where you're coming from. A man can only squint for so long.
- aoyamamotoko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I believe the "GTK Theme Control" plugin will do what you need. Just enable it and hit the configure button to adjust sizes of everything.
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Assuming you're talking about Windows, for some dumb reason you have to modify some text files in the GTK directories. You can't change the font through the GUI. You'd think this would be a feature of 1.0.
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is Pidgin much better than the recent GAIM betas? I've moved on to Miranda IM and see no reason to switch back unless I'm using Linux.
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Having just read the Ars Technica review it actually looks much improved over old versions. I'm still happier with my current client but I'm glad there's such solid competition out there.
- MCDupree, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Miranda is ridiculous. I'd consider myself a pretty advanced user, but doing something that should be a simple task, like applying a theme or skin, is giving me a headache. I need 15 other "add-ons" before I can get one skin to work.
- rwong8, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1anyway to turn the green circles to actually something representative of which IM service the screennames belong to?
sticking w/ 2.0 beta 6 til they fix it.. - riffic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2the new website is up. congrats to the pidgineers
- hotsake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Doh.. bury, please
- geeke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1looks very nice.
way to go. - clos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1mmmm shiny
- kirkio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1digg +1 for the rhyme in the description
- Sprinky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh man! I've been waiting for this since version 1.5! I wonder when it'll hit Gentoo-Portage...
