- dimes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Hi all, glad you like the app, also happy to get the feed back from those of you who don't =)
Just to cover a few things:
Its a valid web page and no we aren't collecting addys for spam or anything else nefarious =) We have been trying to stay a little under the radar and have been "trying" to slow the influx of users by having people sign up for the beta. Which hasn't stopped people from being more resourceful and getting it elseware(as posted above =)). If no one has replied yet, its because its chrismas/new years week here in the states, so replies might be a bit slow =)
Also, there is a Mac OSX client also! Works great, and is what I use.
You can stop a file transfer and resume it later(as mentioned above).
Yes, the person you send to does have to have the app too, but they can use it without registering. Registering is only required to send files.
As for registering: We aren't collecting for spam or anything else, but when we do upgrades or have any real problems we like to be able to keep you informed(heck, we don't even send emails about upgrades, the app notifies you itself).
As for the app, it is 100% addware, spyware, slowyourboxdownandkillitware free. We are a small bunch of geeks and the like and we hate that stuff.
Hope this info is helpfull
Dimes
PS: If you haven't figured it out yet, I am a Pando employee =) - doctapeppa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Something scares me about a site that asks for my email address and says right on top "Thanks for Sharing"

Your username and record tells me that I shouldn't trust you. - unexplainedmilk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I don't see the point. www.yousendit.com is basically the same thing (1 gig file limit), but you don't have to install any type of app."
If your browser crashes or you accidentally hit the stop button, you have to start uploading that huge file again from the start.
"Good idea, it still represents the problem of people not being able to receive files that are bigger than 10MB (or some other size) though"
How so? The recipient gets a small .pando file (like a torrent file, since the system has BitTorrent behind it) in their email which just tells the pando client to start downloading the actual attached files.
"Does the user at the receiving end need the software installed?"
Yes, there is a link in the email to the recipient to allow them to download the app. - nasium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Pando is worth the try, i have been testing Pando for some time, never had any problems. I like the product, but the product is very niche specific. I could see this app being implemented into other desktop apps, such as photo applications for sending photo or an IM client for file transfer.
Here is a little history about Pando.
http://www.zeropaid.com/news/4825/Ex-KaZaa+Engineer+Back+With+Funding
http://www.zeropaid.com/news/4743/Ex+KaZaA+employee+going+places,+J.+Cain - paroxsitic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Pando is like a personalized bit torrent system.
It will 'package' (compress too?) everything your trying to send, the package uploads to a server, and the .pando (like .torrent) is sent to the email address you specified.
The receiver downloads and opens the .pando file. Pando starts downloading the file from multiple places to maximize download speed. (I downloaded at my maxmium download speed (750KB / 6Mb)
------------------------
This will resume downloads AND uploads if the connection is lost. I ‘ctrl alt deleted’ the process when uploading a 30MB file and it resumed with no problem.
The file also stays on their server for a good length of time (not sure how long).
I did send the 30MB file to myself. Then I deleted the upload history to see if the package stayed on their servers after I said I didn’t want to send the file anymore. I then tried to re-upload the same package and it was an instant upload (meaning they found that this file was already uploaded by me).
Some of you might test this program out by sending and downloading the same package to yourself, and notice that the file is not giving you an option to download. Instead, it will automatically open the .pando package when you try to download it. This is because Pando realizes your trying to download something that is already in your upload history, and skips the download. Simply delete the upload history and then try to download the pando package to test-drive the download process.
This is just what I get from the program and how I understand what it does. If I am wrong, please correct me. - invader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2>ummmmmmmm it's the EXACT same thing as just using an SMTP server on your computer.
>But I dugg because it's easy and a novel idea to bring it to the masses. Just saying... if you set up an >SMTP server, you can send whatever you want, wherever you want.
you obviously don't know how it works. i didn't even have to follow the links to know (but i did anyway just to make certain) that it doesn't install an smtp server. that would be ridiculous to deploy to countless end-users. it's built on bittorrent technology, meaning you upload the file to a network of peers (hopefully servers as well, for stability) and the recipient gets a torrent file *.pando that is used for downloading it.
it's an interesting concept. i don't think i would have ever thought of mixing bittorrent and email. novel concept, madd props - goodbyepolar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does the user at the receiving end need the software installed?
- katmai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey you should NOT believe that you get SPAM from signing up for Pando. How do I know? I work at Pando too in PM/M - ie, I'm one of 2 people in the group who put the email input there. Sorry if it's caused some worry. The only one reason we did it is so we could email some short surveys out about the UI, reliability, the experience, etc. Email addresses do not leave the vault, I guarantee you.
Thanks to all who are trying the app!! Please be patient though - having a little erratic behavior here and there as we add capacity. This just means a slow DL once in a while, most often we're really fast. Overall the feedback's been great. Let us know what you think. - amitrix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i hope its not a bogus site...just submitted my e-mail address and never heard from 'em again.
- pandemia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Beta link (in english) here: http://luca.wordpress.com/2005/11/03/pando-the-web-power/
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm sure many people have heard of this, but for those who haven't, http://www.dropload.com/ is a free web based file sending utility that lets you upload any sized file for free for an email recipient to pick up.
- Horizons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Although I doubt I'll be using it, ahron:
" * Macintosh System Requirements: Pando is less than 2Mb
* Mac OS X 10.3.9+
* 256MB RAM
* Broadband Internet connection"
So, where did you get the info that there was no OS X binary? - aforonda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1y install anything http://www.dropload.com/
- dimes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1vomer,
We use a modified bittorrent protocol, all custom code. When sending, it uploads to one of our servers, the file/s are fully encrypted before the send so we have no way(or at least easy way) to see what you are sending. The person receiving can start downloading even before you are finished. That being said, they don't have to be even online for you to send something to someone else, as our servers store what you sent for a period of time before it expires.
Dimes - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder if this works better than Gmail Drive Shell Extension AKA gmailfs or does it work differently?
- paroxsitic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yousendit doesnt allow for automated packaging and compression.
yousendit also does not allow you to continue a previous upload or download.
yousendit may also suffer from server and bandwidth resource consumption. Where as Pando uses a bit torrent like system and breaks the file/files into smaller pieces and then uses multiple servers.
yousendit doesnt offer GUI that displays files you've uploaded and recieved. - senzafine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@ramibotros
"what's bad about www.yousendit.com or www.youshareit.com or the other file hosting services?"
I agree. Emailing large attachments is the most annoying thing ever. I hate waiting for a 10MB file when checking my email...much less a 100MB file. Yousendit is a much better way to do it. Email was never meant as a file sharing protocol...damn whoever added "attachments" to email. - Lorian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good idea, it still represents the problem of people not being able to receive files that are bigger than 10MB (or some other size) though
- invader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Yeah, it was stated above that you can."
awesome.. didn't have time to read everything in all 4-5 locations.. i'm definitely going to try it out then
thanks - mrslick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I tried it and it didn't work for me, but maybe I did something wrong.
- Thorpe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I submitted my e-mail address. I ain't too bothered because I get a lot of spam already anywhere but I highly doubt they are going to sell them on.

- Chicken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"i do have a question about the software, in case anyone knows..
i've used yousendit.com and the ONLY problem (yes, i only have one problem with it) is having to restart the upload if something happens. i'm on wifi 99.9% of the time, and 2 second long disconnects happen occasionally, and stuff like that.
does pando protect from interrupted uploads? can you stop the upload, then resume where you left off? that feature alone would make or break whether i even test out the app."
Yeah, it was stated above that you can. - elitexero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's juat a fancy interface for file transferring.
- amitrix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1just tried it and for some reason, mine is painfully slowwwwwwwww altho im in a LAN with peak speeds of 3mb/sec!
so no DIGG----- - theOster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yousendit.com allows up to a gig file and does not require your email adress. just give the email of the person you're sending to and they get a notification that they have something waiting for them on the yousendit servers. yousendit deletes anything after 7 days.
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0unlimited size?!? says up to 1 gig!!!
- eschatonik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Where do you guys see that it is based on bittorrent? I can't seem to find anything that lays out the acual tech specs. From reading the "how it works" and "about" pages, it looks to me like the app leverages exiting email accounts by automating the process of producing a RAR-type type file that is broken up into chunks.
For sending files like this, bittorrent makes no sense...who is going to help you seed a giant WMV of your wedding or kid's first birthday or whatever?
Maybe I'm missing something? - invader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i do have a question about the software, in case anyone knows..

- pseudojd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0someone please bring me bt enabled podcasts
- jonshipman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What Pando needs to do is get into deals with MS and Apple to get this thing pre-installed on all machines. That would help it become the defacto standard in file sending. BTW, the legal reasons far outway the illegal reasons. I have countless huge files that I occasionally need to send people and etc.
Oh, if Pando could get rid of the having to register part then it'd become more popular. - dusan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm using pando for a few weeks and it's really, really great.
it can pause/resume "emailing". i never had a single problem with it.
and if you worry about privacy, you can always password protect package. - Toecutter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So this is bittorrent in a different wrapper.?
- wizpig64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Privacy policy:
http://www.pando.com/beta/privacy - tosinoff, on 05/08/2008, -0/+0you can only send around 8MB... with pando you can send upto 3GB
- xil3nt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is it just me or are the speeds EXTREMELY SLOW!!!:| im getting 4 kb second..
- dimes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0crapiolio: =)
We have been working pretty hard at staying under the "radar" while we are in closed beta.....mostly because we are still ramping up our hardware to be able to handle the demand.....so when our web hits make a big jump in a day we look to see where its coming from =) Which today led us here. And since we are a small company, we try to stay in touch with our users, let you know we are out here and listening to your opinions on the app. We have worked hard to make something we think people will really like and want.....and we want to make sure we get it right.
The input off this board is quite usefull. To see how people react to it and us.
Thanks
dimes - dimes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0pseudodj: podcasters need only pando their casts and post a .pando, it will functionally work like bt when using the pando client.
Toecutter: It is a modified bt protocol, so its not "just" a wrapper. they don't currently intereact with each other. (i.e. .pando wont work with a bt client, .torrent wont work with a pando client)
Jammer: We are currently in early beta, so we limit file size to 1gb. Whenever we make it out of beta the limit will more likely be OS dependent. tbd. - crapiolio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why are there so many Pando emplyees here?
- AndrewMB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have seen other programs like this before, but I cannot recall the name of it.
- katmai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Love the site. Love the huge spike in traffic - the digg effect - too. This is just about the first U.S. site to pick us up. Dimes and I were like the only people working last night, trying to figure out what the heck was going on!!! He figured it out. So instead of just lurking we jumped into the conversation. Hope no one minded. So Goodbye! Thx to all.
