- zachlipton, on 10/12/2007, -10/+56Also, this blows IE 7's three million downloads in the first FOUR days out of the water.
IE's figure according to: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/10/24/ie7-hits-the-street.aspx - wvdavis, on 10/12/2007, -3/+441 download... installed on 8 computers and a thumb drive.
- stisaac, on 10/12/2007, -7/+38That's because the people who have firefox choose to get it because it's better rather than the stereotypical indifferent IE user.
- itanshi, on 10/12/2007, -5/+34yeh firefox wasn't a controlled delivery, ie was.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+32Nobody's been forced to downoad IE7.
The only thing 3 million manual IE7 downloads and 2 million manual Firefox downloads suggests is in the whole world, only 5,000,000 people give a *****. - Dested, on 10/12/2007, -24/+50Thats 2 million WILLING downloads in a day, as opposed to 3 million FORCED downloads over the course of 4 days. I think we know who won.
- zacmccormick, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18@Dested:
Forced download? IE7 isn't a forced download, I don't know where you got that information. IE7 is on windows update, but it is only available right now for people who already have some version of IE7 installed (which would be beta or pre-beta which are definitely not forced downloads). I went on windows update from an IE6 machine and it didn't show up and the only way to install it was to go to the download page and download the installer. In other words, IE7 hasn't been released to the masses (IE6 users) through windowsupdate yet. - rflint, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Wrong. We're not pushing Fx2 via the update system until some time after 1.5.0.8 is released (1.5.0.7 doesn't support major updates). No update notice has been presented to users yet, so those downloads are all organic and don't even include those who jumped the gun and started linking to random FTP mirrors on monday.
So do try to get your facts straight prior to posting garbage. - theamazingboo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12For my PC I do prefer Opera. As for my powerbook I usually use camino. Firefox 2.0 is a nice release, but on the mac side it still 'feels' like a windows port. Maybe that will change in future versions. As for my pc, I just prefer opera.
Nice release, though. - djbutnot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12@sleepyness, insinuate, Dested:
There will be more downloads in a couple of weeks when Windows Update kicks in and tells people to upgrade.
To be honest, while I dislike IE, I still think that people need to upgrade to IE7 if they use IE6 as their browser. IE6 is such a pain to program for! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18Opera still kicks Firefox's ass.
- Drehmini, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9For Firefox use this -- http://www.foxytunes.com/
- d03boy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9You can't compare 3million/4 days to 2million/1day... not unless you accurately understand the law of diminishing returns at least
- thecommish, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I downloaded Firefox 2 on both my Macs last night and I had to switch back to 1.5 after. When I open firefox it looks normal except that the portion of the window that actually show the webpage is smashed into about .5 inches on the left side of the window. This includes the scroll bar on the right. I can see about .25 inches of the webpage. I thought maybe it was just on the one mac but it was on both. Does anyone have any ideas?
- Crepsley, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14Thats according to..doesn't mean it's true. You guys have to stop believing everything that is written on the internet. You have to research in order for you to say that it is true.
- joe90210, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8wow, it's too bad you are lying, IE7 is not on Windows update unless you already have a version of it. nice try though
- championchap, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Remember back in the day of Writely? Back when they still had their old site up?
It said in the browser support bit that Safari wasn't supported because it lacked some features that most modern browsers come with as standard these days, so support was very unlikely any time soon.
I would consider that (a definite fault of the Safari browser, a fault that firefox lacks.) a reason that firefox is better. - Doghound, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"WGA will not allow for it and if it"
WTF are you talking about? You want to download IE7? Here's a link from Microsoft's own website... http://switch.atdmt.com/action/IE_7_Windows_XP_SP2_B
You do not need validation to download it. Now, granted, you do need to validate Windows before the installation takes place, but that validating takes place after you have already downloaded the file.
Also, please observe the words being used here. The number of downloads are being tracked and reported, not the number of validations.
PLEASE NOTE: I did not provide that link as an adviertisement for IE7!! I provided it to prove a point. I still use FF most of the time over IE, but I don't side (there are some sites that work better under IE I find than FF). - jhshukla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i cannot do anything about your likings but tabs do work for me.
- MaHaGoN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You just completely destroyed a comment in one word.
Congratulations! - IIIKrazyKiDDIII, on 10/12/2007, -10/+12Of course its going to saturate the market more than FF2. Remeber Microsoft's Bundle of Joy business model? FF is growing fast because it is actually good. Since I am a web developer, I'm glad that there are browser wars again because it evolves CSS ability and standards to be better. But I congratulate FF for being just plain good.
- d03boy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5The only thing I dislike about FF2 is that there is no longer an [x] in the tab bar where there is now a "List all tabs" button... other than that, its solid.
I gave IE7 a try and found it to be pretty much horrible. It set itself as my default browser even though I specifically told it not to. It has no menu bar... and when you "show" it, ITS BELOW THE FRIGGING ADDRESS BAR? Then the tab bar has too much clutter on it and what the hell is with the "home" key and those others being on the tab bar at the RIGHT? Whoever thought of this design must have had a 800x600 display or something because moving my mouse way over there is a little inconvenient. - rhettnyedotorg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That means that there's about 2 million of us. Geeks.
imagine if we could affect positive change in the world, or at least our little internetworld? - Wootery, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't think IE is trying to define its own standards, more likely the IE developers are retards.
- Doghound, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8"1 download... installed on 8 computers and a thumb drive."
- wvdavis
Are you trying to say that the 2 million number should be higher just because there are people who download it once and then install it on several machines? If so, then, by that logic, the number of IE7 downloads should also be increased because I'm sure several people have done the same thing. For example, I have 4 computers, but I'd only download it once for all of them.
If you are just stating it for the sake of saying it, then here's a cookie... http://wiki.coolmon.org/files/cookie.jpg - Denver80203, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5"by that logic, the number of IE7 downloads should also be increased because I'm sure several people have done the same thing"
*****. WGA will not allow for it and if it did MS would still get an accurate count of th machines it was installed on. Believe me if they could prove that 1 download goes to 8 machines AND THEY CAN... they WOULD.
not to mention that you could NEVER install IE on a thumb drive. - Toupee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2True, sillywampa - in MOST cases. Some themes look a little "off" in FF2.0 because of the way the "Search" and "Go" buttons are actually attached to their respective bars. My favorite theme, Phoenity, looked ugly because the "Go" button is taller than it should be, and it stretched everything in that toolbar vertically.
Luckily a quick about:config fix got rid of the "Go" button completely (I never used it anyway). Just change browser.urlbar.hideGoButton to true and it's gone. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Within 24 hours of the official launch on Tuesday, there were over 2 million people using Firefox 2 as opposed to over three million for IE7.These were willing downloads as opposed to forced IE7 downloads (via Windows update).
I would also like to mention the two vulnerabilities discovered by Secunia.com lately.
http://secunia.com/internet_explorer_7_popup_address_bar_spoofing_test/
http://secunia.com/Internet_Explorer_Arbitrary_Content_Disclosure_Vulnerability_Test/
Shouldn't this be matter of concern for the IE team? - Xilon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Excactly you morons! His post was accurate... IE is a pos, Firefox isn't... Firefox is actually trying to improve the internet and it's working along with w3c instead of defining it's own idiotic standard.
- Xilon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1First thing I thought of when I saw the FF2.0 GUI and Home page was "Vista", or IE. I guess this came from that meeting Mozilla and Microsoft had... I hate the cyan colour now. Apart from the colors and amazing similarity to the Vista GUI it's a great browser, the interface is nice from a design point of view, the tabs are really visible etc.
If you use FF 1.5.0.7 just because you don't like the look of FF2.0... you're an idiot.
What strengths does IE6 have btw? Being able to render it's own standard ? duh... not really a strength since you can't install IE on Linux or Mac. People viewing websites do use other operating systems you know. - chapium, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@FlapJaw
Thanks, we wanted to know. Seriously. - kallewoof, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And what about those (possibly quite a big group) who get it via APT from Ubuntu (Edgy) or other, up-to-date distros?
- iainc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Tabs work fine for me, too. BTW you can switch off the individual tab close crosses via the about:config URL. Personally, I like 'em but then it's because Safari has them and I've grown used to it. Horses for courses, as they say, but you have options.
- nograz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does this number count firefox packages for linux distros? If not, then the number is even higher!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I find IE works better for saving images off websites. Firefox just stops as it copies a file, not quite locked up, since it comes back to normal, but stops. It's kind of annoying when you're looking to save a few interesting pictures.
It also works better with some boards I participate on.
And no, I don't like the colors or the Vista GUI. Maybe other people do, but I don't. Can't stand it. Plus I like my tabs to have the close button at the far end of the bar, less likely to close it by accident. - TanNg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Endless IE vs FF debate. Fan boys don't know what boring is.
- Xilon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Download IE7, please download IE7!
I hate it, so download it! :P lol... seriously though do download it, you don't have to use it (please don't :P) but IE is built into the Windows core, pretty much every app accessing the internet or rendering HTML etc on windows will be using the IE API and hence will be using IE6 instead of IE7... so please do update. - iainc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Opera shot themselves in their collective foot when they (initially) decided to charge for their product. It's free of charge now (I know) and it's an undeniably great browser (I know) but it's largely irrelevant to me. I have it installed on my Mac as a testing tool but I don't tend to use it much. Even though I have Safari (another faboo browser), I still tend to use Firefox because I'm comfortable with it and I can use it on Windows, Linux and Solaris without having to adjust. I'd rather support the Firefox team's efforts sooner than dilute their presence; it's an undeniably great product and they're doing a good job.
Don't get me wrong. Opera IS a great browser but not compelling enough for me to consider switching full-time. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, I did the same.
- Xilon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1_IMO_ Firefox is better than Safari, Internet Explorer, Opera, Konqueror, Shiira, Camino and Ephiphany (though these two are basically simplified versions of FF). The reason being is that it is the most customisable browser and yet it is quite fast, it does try to conform to the w3c standards, it's free and open source and it's just a fabulous browser with a great community behind it supporting the project. This is what I like to see in software.
Opera may be a good browser but imo it's not extensible enough, the GUI isn't customisable in the way that I want it to be (yes it is customisable and it's great but it still doesn't do what I want), there's too much stuff as standard just like in Azureus, I don't care if it uses up memory or not when not used, it's still too much.
Safari is a nice and fast browser in rendering and startup. If I want to see one site or something then I do use it when I'm on my macbook. It lacks the features of Firefox - customisability.
I don't think I even need to voice my opinions about Internet Explorer... it's the worst thing that Microsoft has come up with, thank god they are "trying" to improve it. At least now > selectors and :hover psuedo-classes work... - justdave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2We tried torrents of Firefox for the 1.5 release, and very few people actually used them. It's not worth the effort to set them up for the minimal return on bandwidth savings you get out of it. Most folks have broadband these days, and bittorrent just isn't worth it on a 5 to 10 MB file that's only going to take a couple minutes to download anyway. Bittorrent is awesome when you have a 50 to 300 MB file to grab on the other hand.
- evilspoons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What about the guys who downloaded it *before* the official release day, even though it was the final build? Were they counted too?
Personally, I've installed IE7 and Firefox 2.0. FF is still my primary browser but I do not regret either update. - joe90210, on 10/12/2007, -8/+9@Dested you moron, IE7 isn't on win update yet. idiot.
- jhshukla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2they will have one when they are running out of bandwidth. i would suggest buying a T-shirt or just plain donation.
- IcerC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Fire Fox 2 doesn't cut it for me.
1.5 is here to stay atleast until Colorful Tabs is compatible with 2.
Also saving files messed up with Firefox 2. And memory is less with 1.5.
2 Is sucking for me. - astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If Microsoft is NOT forcing IE 7 down everyones throats... then why do they offer an IE 7 Install Blocker? Because everyone was getting burned when they applied system updates because Microsoft FORCED it in with their recent updates.

Firefox 2.0 baby....no bs! - astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Stop the belly aching, TabMix is what you want.
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1122/
Gives you the [X] per tab... the 1.5.x version is on the page, with the 2.0 version
in the comments. - jhshukla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1that sucks. for me, it didn't even ask me whether i want to set it as default browser. lets vote: what sucks more?
- IE setting itself as default even when you tell it not to
- IE doesn't ask you at all - raid517, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2MS cheated on the IE update anyway - since it was offered as a 'critical update' via Windows update.
Anyway compared to FF IE7 still blows. It took a few of the best features of Firefox (MS copying again!) and left out the rest. (And the bits it left out were pretty big too).
If anything IE7 is no better than a poor Firefox imitation. - pspfourlife, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i updated IE7 with now Windows update. i got it because my friend had it and it looked cool.
but, as i messed around with it, it (IE7) didn't have anywhere NEAR the amount of FREE Firefox extensions and themes, as well as the numerous options. hmmm... -
