- ahill7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15but smart folders aren't in Win XP
- xixor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15For example, when doing scientific research, you tend to accumulate a ton of PDFs: both ones you have written, and ones you have downloaded from journals. I figure I have roughly 4000 PDF files floating around my hard drive right now.
- RadiantBeing, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13This is dumb. With smart folders, you can do this and more (ie dynamically search document contents).
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11any ideas of what filetypes itunes support more?
maybe I can organise my collection of DLLs in system32 in itunes? - strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Using one bloated software app to organize files typically used by another bloated software app = very good idea?
Interesting. - MScrip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8> "Some explain why people use pdf's in the first place?"
To send paper documents electronically. PDFs are a good way to ensure that your document arrives at the other end looking like it should. You don't have to worry about fonts, appearance, etc.
PDFs shouldn't be a mystery anymore. - tdogg241, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"Smart" and "organized" don't always go hand-in-hand.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Proof anything can make it on digg.
- interg12, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9why would i ever want to use itunes to sort PDFs? i feel like if we cross that bridge, then pretty soon we'll be on a slippery slope towards something crazy. itunes will replace the desktop interface! AGH!
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Sounds like you downloaded some poorly tagged mp3s. I've put somewhere between 500-600 CDs into iTunes (backed up nightly, shared across the network to my other systems and my XBMC - for a free software app that's not bad) and have had an issue with about 1% of them. The thing isn't magic, though, and does still require a little bit of work here and there.
Maybe you're upset with how the files are actually stored on your system? If you have albums with multiple artists make sure to mark them as a compilation and iTunes will put them all into one folder. - Ub3rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9People have private PDF libraries? I think I have a sum total of 4 PDFs on my home computer.
- stef686, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Pretty cool idea, never knew iTunes supported PDF...
- gerkin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Call me oldshool, but I use aptly named folders to organize my PDFs
- monkeyrun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Apparently you have years of experience on running bloated software on top of a bloated Operating system. So this should be a great idea for you.
- fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Lifehacker's one of those sites that pays for diggs. It's the only explanation for why so much of its crap is able to spam the front page.
- mikeroySoft, on 10/19/2009, -1/+4Yes, and even more interesting would be if those pdf's could be read 1 page at a time using full screen cover flow. Each 'album slot' would represent a page.
hm, actually...
*runs to the patent office* - Jerk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Yes, smart people utilize "tools" to help keep things organized.
- bredvad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4How about Kip:
http://www.yepthat.com/
Wait now it's called Yep. - gnetsurpher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm confused by the article saying you cannot VIEW pdfs in iTunes. IF you double click the PDF, at least on the Mac, it will open Preview to view the PDF. On the PC, I'm sure it could be set up to open Adobe Acrobat or something similar, correct? The iTunes part is merely the organization part of the equation while the viewing is another and easily accomplished.
- MScrip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2> "Now if I could find something like itunes for images, Picassa just doesn't do it......"
So wait... what does Picassa do then? I thought it organized images. - slowelectron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I use the print to PDF feature in OS X all the time. It saves paper and clutter, and allows me to organize documents electronically.
- daigakuinsei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Same thing on PCs. Just double click and it opens Adobe.
I might consider actually using iTunes in this way if I weren't already using Zotero. - joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2uh...iphoto?
- MisterOL, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Very cool idea
- ericdano, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3DevonThink for Mac. Hands down. Best document organizer.
- bigdawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have been using Yep for awhile to keep a "iphoto" like interface of all my pdf documents. Very easy to use and mac like.
- 12340987, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1acrobat reader 8 seems to be way better than 7
- xixor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1arunsjunk: Thanks, I will try it out. Currently I use JabRef http://jabref.sourceforge.net/ to track bibliography in a BibTeX database and an organized hierarchy of directories to manage PDFS.
- fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Businesses already use Acrobat Professional to manage their PDF libraries. That's been a feature since at least version 6. (Note: this feature isn't in the freely available Acrobat Reader).
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There's been a bunch of Lifehacker posts on digitizing letters, financial documents and such. Ebooks often are in PDF formats, as are a bunch of documents I get from College (Posters, briefings, scripts/storyboards) - Personally I find it easier just using folders to story stuff, but others might prefer using iTunes.
I don't see what's wrong with PDF as a format - it has it's uses, just a lot of people seem to hate it because they associate Adobe Reader with the letters "PDF" (And I don't blame them, Adobe's Reader is horribily slow, and it's pretty much ubiquitous with the term PDF..) - But, the format itself is fine, with something like Foxit, or OS X's Preview, they actually become useful.
For example, saving websites for offline use (and espically printing them) doesn't always work, having a format that's basically like virtual-paper (I.e what's on screen is how it will print) is useful, and most OS's can read them (I've seen very few computers without Adobe Reader, Preview or xpdf or similar).
Also, if you want to email a saved web-page, you need to archive it if you want to keep the embedded images/stylesheets etc, where as PDF's are self-contained, and can store images, in a more consistent format than Microsoft Word files (Which are one of the few other comparable formats)..
The only thing that's missing is the abilty to easily alter text and such on PDFs, although in a lot of cases that might be a good thing - cbergeron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@bredvad:
Yep, I was going to say the same thing. I love "Yep". It's a dumb choice of a program name though. Try googling for Yep and see how many hit's it returns. Heh. Great program though. - directive0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Man, use a program some people don't like to do something neat and outside its intended use and the opinions just fly out of the woodwork.
- catmistake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.perl.com/download.csp#binary
- Gundark, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Its called iPhoto. Apple has lured you into thier software world. This iTunes for windows business is doing it's job. Getting you interested in purchasing a Mac.
- arunsjunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@xixor
Try http://bibdesk.sourceforge.net/. I hear it's good for organizing PDFs along with your bibliography. I'm going that route fairly soon. I hate searching for that one PDF that I stored away but can't search for it because it's an "image" PDF .... - aldomatic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1nice, didn't know i tunes was that cool
- geira, on 01/08/2008, -0/+0As much as I like Perl (being a member of Oslo.pm), unnecessary link spam is not the way to advocate its use.
- geira, on 01/08/2008, -0/+0Nope you can't. With iTunes you can set title, author (or "artist"), year of publication and so on. This is much harder to do with Spotlight, since it indexes the PDF metadata which you need Acrobat (a $299 purchase) to modify. Plus, iTunes just flies whereas Spotlight takes forever.
- Muero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yep looks really cool. Are there equivalents for Windows or Linux?
- majordanger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2We use PDFs for the same reason we drive on the right side of the road or buy our tomatoes by the pound instead of the kG.
Unfortunately we are stuck with PDFs. - Zoltair, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Now if I could find something like itunes for images, Picassa just doesn't do it......
- bearacid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Nice I like it!!!

elevator shoes
Turn any shoes into height increase elevator shoes. - ztaylor5273, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Some explain why people use pdf's in the first place?
- brufleth, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4Hey lets organize our libraries using yak calls and our kitchens with baseball hand signals. Oh and lets hammer nails with tea cups and drink tea out of oil tankers.
With a big enough hammer, everything starts to look like a nail.
I hate itunes and I'm fairly sure google desktop searches pdf content. Or ::GASP:: organize your pdf files better. I work with hundreds of PDF files on shared drives and local drives. This is dumb. - mbierman, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3Please. iTunes can't even get my music library organized right (fails to download album art, puts single tracks of the same album as multiple instances of the album, etc. I wouldn't trust it to organize my socks.
- fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1It's called antitrust. Everytime MS announces something like this, Apple and Google run off to the Justice Department to file injunctions.
It's hard to introduce new features when you get accused of antitrust violations for even the smallest things. - Ub3rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3If you're smart enough to be doing grad level research, do you really need iTunes to give you organizational skills?
