- NoOneButMe, on 10/12/2007, -6/+201 is "placeboware" - max half open wont affect bittorrent - once a connection's open, you keep that connection for at least ~3-5 minutes (depending on the client disconnect on idle time), sometimes less IF the peer sends bad hashes.
2 is useful, but it really should be bittorrent common sense by now.
"check peers" - you cant control this so don't worry about it, if you find a torrent you want, grab it and dont worry about that. sites such as TPB, Isohunt, or any other indexer only update the tracker a few times a day so it might not be anywhere near the correct numbers. - verdict: "Placeboware"
"change the default port" only the official bittorrent client really uses the default port range. uTorrent, Azureus, and most other good clients have a default port that is not standard. - verdict: "Placeboware"
"disable windows firewall" duh? use a router to control incoming connections and a good firewall like sygate 5.5 or outpost to control outgoing connections - all the mentioned are highly configurable. verdict: "common sense, but useful"
"turn on encryption" Only useful if your ISP blocks/throttles bittorrent traffic. also, enable lazy_bitfield in µTorrent to help get around throttling. verdict: If having a sucky isp: good, in all other cases, placeboware
"optimize connection" this will most likely just increase your default TCP packet size. somewhat useful, but if your using udp/dht for trackerless, then it wont do anything - UDP isnt TCP :). verdict: im going to call this placeboware - NoOneButMe, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14hardly a torrent freak & comment wasnt meant to be demeaning in any way, so dont take it as such - just my take on the story, bittorrent isnt really a new technology, perhaps i've just been using it for to long & forgotten what it's like to be a newbie at it, i dunno - i'll have to think on that. either way, sorry if the comment came across as mean-spirited in any way.
- Artifez, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Good article, lots of solid info and very clear steps. I use BT quite a bit and i'll try these. Anyone know if these are actually helpful or just Placeboware?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8heres the original giuide that he copied

OR
use this guide to do all of that automaticly
http://ut-settings.go.pl/ - Kosterfield, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Linux gets the best speeds on torrents under the sun. What else would you be downloading? I mean come on the RIAA and the MPAA know all we do is download Linux right?
- uziq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5#5. Limit the total number of connections.
Most routers can only support a certain number of connections. I used to let my torrent client have up to 200 connections, and my router would slow down drastically. Webpages would time-out, email stopped responding. I couldn't even log into the router's interface page. One day, I discovered that the router actually only supports 70 connections. So I readjusted bit torrent to 70 connections, and all previous problems were fixed. :)
See here for a list of router examples:

- elephantdog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I thank the clever person who thought up bittorrent encryption- it makes a world of difference for those that have dumb ***** ISPs who deny they are traffic shaping- NO, traffic limiting based on protocol. Shaping would be fine in my book, keeping http requests at higher priority than bulk data, but most of the ISPs in question throttle the rate to a constant low value regardless of how busy their network is.
- Lyianis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"From the article...
"To be precise, kb/s = kB/s divided by 8."
Whomever wrote this article is a freaking moron!"
umm one byte is 8 bits. to the statement 1kb/s = 1kB/s / 8 is true, As 1kB/s = 8kb/s - haimtime, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Optimum Online doesn't throttle, they just cap you so you can't do anything. Encryption doesn't work for them because they look at total noise.
- saska, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I prefer to limit my bandwidth by application with a third-party tool and then give as much as I can to my upload. I detest the mentality of "I want it really fast from other seeders, why can't I get anything while I upload at 5kbps?"
- gasxtreme, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Ditto.... Outstanding article! Very easy steps to follow, and they actually did help out a LOT! +Digg
- poipoipoi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4give the guy a break, he's clearly not a native english speaker, which means he knows at least one more language than most of the people reading this.
- Lyianis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2bah i can't edit. but no more posting from me at night... got it backwards >.<
1KB/s = 8Kb/s or 1 KB/s = 1Kb/s / 8 - guttertrash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i would think that this is old news. not dugg, but not reported either
- rewritable, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3DOnt forget to bridge your dsl modem as well as forwarding ports.
- gotadobo119, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4yes of course.. legal...
- kalisphoenix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I haven't had luck with anything above 20KB/sec upload. Everything slows to a crawl. Which is odd, since my upload is apparently around 45Kb according to repeated tests.
So after wrangling with BitTorrent ever since I moved here, my advice is to ignore magic formulas and find something that actually works. If you can't download anything, well, decrease the upload cap until it works. It might be 80%, or it might be 40%. Or, alternately, bust a cap in Roadrunner's tech the next time you see him. - jkoon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21. By max “half open” connections does he mean max outbound connections, like max concurrent connection attempts?
- aquax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1As far as I can tell, all of these have some sort of Mac equivalent, or isn't necessary if you're on a Mac.
- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You can turn on encryption while at the same time setting an option to use unencrypted connections when encrypted ones are not available. At least in Azureus you can.
- duzytata, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Call me a noob, but how exactly do you do that?
- streetblader, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's really just a combination of old articles of theirs. But still a good resource.
- elephantdog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Doesn't Azureus work on Mac? It's a pig because it's written in Java, but it does work quite well even on ancient machines.
- mookieXL, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"A simple tip, but very important. Always look for torrents with the best seed/peer ratio. The more seeds (compared to peers) the better (in general). So 50 seeds and 50 peers is better than 500 seeds and 1000 peers. So, be selective."
This is true if you have slow upload, in other case more peers = better - nphp20, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Not really a new thing, nor is it really that hard to find, as there are 100 different websites and forum posts about this, but it's still good and useful info so it gets my digg!
- elephantdog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I use encryption, and aside from rare cases where all the seeds and leechers are using clients that don't support encryption it works just as well off or on. Actually, it worked as well off, but recently had to be turned on... see comment below.
- friend18, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Very helpful. I stopped using bittorrent because it made surfing the web unusable. This really helped myself a bittorrent noob. One thing though, I'm on a mac and when I go to preferences there isn't any place that lets you change the maximum download speed. Am I missing something?
- CypherXero, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"Turn on Encryption"
...And go back to using 5% of your bandwidth. Rinse & Repeat. - rachaelblair, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1No matter how hard I try, bittorent just isn't good for me. My overall speed is just too random, even when there are a lot of seeds. Um, has anyone ever heard of 256k DSL? I didn't know it was so slow until I told my boyfriend. He laughed at me.
- CompIsMyRx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I love Azureus' Encryption Options. Has plenty of Fallbacks and actually increased my download speeds.
- stonebear, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Excellent tutorial, my BT download speeds have doubled. ;^)
- PvtJenkins, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Or maybe he's just trying to be funny? That was my initial reaction to his bizarre comment...
- G20NYK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's a good article, albeit poorly written. I digg it anyway though.
- thehacker123, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I would say that it works quite well
have a 2700kbps internet and got 400kbps downloading opensuse 10.1 live dvd - collectivescott, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Uh...undig?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I've been trying to figure out how to set the maximum number of upload connections in uTorrent for quite awhile but I could never find a spot to do this. You can set the uploads *per torrent* -- but that isn't what I want to do.
- aelias, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Placeboware or no, I just did 80% of these things, and shaved off 30% of my DL time. I don't claim to know why, but I have observed the speed increase for myself.
Oh, wait, there it goes back down. Never mind. Weak. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2And you're 10 to 13 for caring that he ca... oh forget it.
- antiparadigm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1In the article he says: "kb/s = kB/s divided by 8", but isn't it kb/s = kB/s times 8? ie:
(his) 5kb/s = 40kB/s = 320kb/s (me)
If I'm wrong, please correct me.
Otherwise this was a good article, albeit a bit on the windows side... ;p - DarkPrince11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I leave my total number of connections at unlimited and I still get around 200 + kb/s if there are a decent amount of seeds. i remember once I hit 1.61 MB/s while downloading Fedora 4 with Azureus. I took a screenshot when I hit it too cuz I was so amazed. http://www.thegameshrine.com/1.61 MBS.JPG
My recommends: Open up the required ports and none more, use the lvl lord patch, set your global connections around the 200 area, and to ratio your download and upload seed. Also set the number of peer connections to unlimited. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1The uTorrent settings calculator is fairly nifty. Thanks. :)
- gengisPhat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0One thing that helped me was an ip block list that I downloaded from http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php. Loaded that into uTorrent and my number of hashfails went down dramatically and my speed went up.
- BigFoot48, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0You mean http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php
There are no periods period. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0great info
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Things like setting your max upload speed can have a HUGE difference on your download speeds.. If your saturating your upload (Going above the max speed your connection supports), your download speeds will go down a lot.
Changing the default port is generally a good idea, but it wont nessarily improve your download speeds.
Finally, "Buy a faster connection" will help download speeds
Oh, UPnP, while it works fine, I recommend you disable it on your router (and tell any software not to use it), and just forward your ports manually (most things don't need ports open, it only takes 30 seconds to setup, and if your torrent program can open ports at will, that evil trojan can too, it's good for security.. Also, if you leave your access point open, it means anyone can come along and open ports though your router, which isn't good..)
- Ben - duzytata, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I had 164k SBC DSL up until recently. I upgraded to their 'pro' package and got double the download speed but my upload is horrible. I've never seen Azureus go above 40k and I have removed all limits on the upload speed. I wish i could afford something faster. My friend has 6mbs download! He shoves that into my face everyday..
- motionblur, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I've been doing the suggested d/l and u/l speed setting for a couple of years, but it's nice to see some math behind it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+41. is debatable, but still, from the comments I got it seems to work for a lot of people
2. I doubt if the other suggestions are "common sense". Maybe for a torrentfreak like you, but they can be useful to others. -
