- LabThug, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24BRING IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- soogy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21Hell yeah! Opera 9 fixes almost everything in 8.5 that bugged me. The only thing I can think of that it didn't (and couldn't) fix, is ignorant web designers who don't know the meaning of "cross-browser testing."
- Lee69, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I've been using the Opera Beta's for my primary browsing and I love it. However, there's still bugs and crashes present in the program, I don't think it's ready for final release yet. The development is quick, so maybe they'll get those fixed before the 20th.
- atdigg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26I always run the latest weekly build, it will come out very nice: widgets, content blocking, bittorrent integrated, these are some of the improvements over 8.54.
With all browsing, e-mail, IRC, RSS and bittorrent integrated Opera is still smaller and faster than Firefox. - EmileVictor, on 10/12/2007, -22/+3I wish that Opera would implement link folders and "Open in Tabs". I use it every day in firefox and it is one of the only reasons I don't use Opera. Great because all I have to do when I turn on my computer in the morning is click "Open in tabs" and everything I want will open instantly - Digg, gmail, forums, my site, etc.
- Squinky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24File - Sessions - Save this session....
- flyinglikeakite, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Yes. Save a session with those pages and load it everytime.
- worbd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22"Open in tabs"? Opera has had that since v1 or so. Long before Firefox was even being considered, as a matter of fact. Most features in Firefox were invented by Opera.
- MisterCookie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21I'm just psyched for the Nintendo Wii version :D Even though it seems kind of pointless, as nearly everyone has a computer with internet access. Still cool though.
- fanboydcs, on 10/12/2007, -11/+8Anyone know when I can get the opera browser for my nintendo DS? I have been looking all over for it!
- Antaeus, on 10/12/2007, -17/+5I use Firefox a lot but I tested that newest build for Opera 9 and its looking pretty good if they can make it just a little faster maybe I will start thinking about changing of course I would still use Firefox from time to time, you can be without your extensions for only so long.
- LucasVB, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28But Opera is faster than Firefox.
http://www.howtocreate.co.uk/browserSpeed.html#winspeed - flyinglikeakite, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Also according to http://www.24fun.com/downloadcenter/benchjs/benchjs.html opera is faster.
- moofree, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7And from experience, Opera is faster. I prefer firefox, but opera really is a solid browser..
- pabster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Heh, Opera is already faster than Firefox. It loads faster, renders pages faster, and overall runs smoother. It also uses less system resources (namely RAM) and has a ***** of features which have to be added to Firefox via extensions. What the hell's not to like here?
- LucasVB, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28But Opera is faster than Firefox.
- slyckidiot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21I use Firefox, but Opera is a great browser and I'm glad there is healthy competition between the two.
- Skab, on 10/12/2007, -20/+3but will it not crash, and use 99% of resources? or have memory leaks? i really want to use it but...
- EvilBaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11what are you doing wrong? Seriously. The Opera beta has crashed on me once since I've had it and I'm pretty sure that was just XP having its issues. I find Opera much more stable than anything else out there. One of the main reasons why I switched from FF to Opera.
- Skab, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1i dunno maybe using beta software is what was causing those things maybe? bury the comment so what, doesn't change the fact. besides when i didnt crash, everything did load much faster.
- cesclaveria, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9man.. I think you are confusing Opera with a really ***** up FireFox installation (to many extensions?)
- acoot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12digg+opera+wii :) what more could i want.
I have a confession to make, i use opera 80% firefox 19% (IE 1% coz of some office work) - tuxvix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Yes, finally =) I love that browser!
- kendals, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4Opera 9 beta is pretty nice. Best one yet. I think it is nicer than Firefox, but still use Firefox for things like rich-text in my blog and whatnot...
- pornel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Opera 9 implements rich text.
- kendals, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3I thought it did, but I never saw it....until just then. How embarrassing! ;)
- LucasVB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Excellent! Opera is the best browser out there, but unfortunetly most people never look much into it to fully enjoy it. I hope they start a public awareness campaign of some sort in order to kill the several myths about Firefox and Opera, so Opera can get the innovative, fast, secure, stable image it deserves.
- cesclaveria, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8A campaign not only in Operas browser capabilities, but also the other components, like the e-mail client, RSS, Widgets, IRC. Having all that in a blazing fast application saves a lot of time, but I respect the ones who wish to have separated program for each task :)
/*Sorry if I have bad grammar... Im doing my best */ - LucasVB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@cesclaveria
Thanks, you're right. There are several other strong points to consider with all the features packed with Opera. But that's part of what I meant with the myths: people think Opera is bloated with all these features, but even with all these it is still smaller, faster and more secure than competitors. That's why this marketing boost is more than necessary :) - Go Opera!
- dotone, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Couldn't wait more.
- pornel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7So get it now http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/
- lobbster, on 10/12/2007, -15/+2i tried opera for a week or so, its alright but the way that it render some pages was frustrating. so i went back to FF.
_______
http://www.i-o-n.blogspot.com- flyinglikeakite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Opera's rendering of pages is the most standard compliant way. its mostly ignorant web devs.
- pornel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I don't find it much different than in any non-IE browser. Opera's doing a lot to be compatible with the average tagsoup (implements IE dom, can spoof it's user agent, even has bunch of greasemonkey-like patches for popular broken websites and lame scripts)
- Unitarder, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Anyone know if they've improved their gesture system? Talk about a pain in the ass. Just configuring was a pain, let alone no support for diagonal(?) gestures. It's the only thing holding me back from Opera at this point. I used Opera almost exclusivly up until Firefox had some decent gesture extentions released. I still think Opera is (or at least seems) to be quicker at loading pages, which is why I'm so torn. DAMN YOU GESTURES!!!!
- Jarasmen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I don't have any gesture problems on my Opera 9 beta 2. Thare are diagonal, everything works fine.
- frizzipazzi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3I am browsing in the 9.0 Beta now, I hope that in the final it will be possible to switch off the bit torrent client, it doesn't have almost all the features of uTorrents and it's really annoying to rightclick and save as everytime I want to d/load a torrent!
- jaxxstorm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9opera:config, clikc bittorrent, untick enable, click save
done - gookie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It's even under Preferences. I dont have it installed right now, but it's on the file/mime types and the appropriate action....by default it's being handled by Opera....just change it that you just want to download the file.
- frizzipazzi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I'm probably too dumb, but I cannot find the config option u're talking about, where is it?
Thanks :) - Jarasmen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Type "opera:config" in the adress bar (if that's what you're looking for).
- adolfojp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Right click -> save target as"
Have fun! :-)
Although it would be nice to be able to turn it off from the config menu.
- jaxxstorm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9opera:config, clikc bittorrent, untick enable, click save
- kendals, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6One of my favourite features of Opera is showing the size, and how much is loaded of the page/images as the page loads (in the status bar at the bottom)- such a cool feature :)
- HappyProgrammer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I switched to Opera for a little while from Firefox. I loved the browser. However many sites that work with Firefox do not work with Opera. Some of the Google sites for example do not work with Opera. My stock brokerage doesnt work with Opera either.
Additionally I use several computers and have become very dependent on Google browser sync to keep
all my browsers in sync.
I guess I am stuck with Firefox for now. - snurfle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I've been using Opera since it was available as a one-floppy-sized installation, and it has always outperformed any other browser I have used.
I've been running the beta of 9.0 for windows since it was released, and have only had minor (beta?) problems with it a couple of times.
I've been running the Linux release, and have NEVER seen it have any problems.
The only down side I have been able to find is this:
After getting used to the intuitive nature of the mouse gestures, I find myself trying to use them in OTHER apps!- PaiTrakt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11"After getting used to the intuitive nature of the mouse gestures, I find myself trying to use them in OTHER apps!"
Haha, me too :)
- PaiTrakt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11"After getting used to the intuitive nature of the mouse gestures, I find myself trying to use them in OTHER apps!"
- KrocCamen, on 10/12/2007, -13/+2Hello,
I just thought I'd pop in and tell you about how great Firefox is, and how much better it is than your Opera thing (although I've never even used it).
I thought that, since every time a Firefox article is on Digg, swaves of kind Opera people turn up to tell us how much better their browser is, so I'm just extending the favour. :)
Kind regards,
Kroc.- Jarasmen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Actually I feel a bit nagged, but by the Firefox fanboys. Everything must be FF, half the new builds need a digg article, every good site needs a ff badge and some need to show you an error page if you don't use ff. Even Jehova's Witnesses aren't as persistent. I don't have anything against the browser, I just hate it for it's fanbase.
- crimsonalucard, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2digg is feeding ground for all types of fanboys. It's one of the biggest downfalls of digg.
- gookie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Awesome.
When will Opera linux start using GTK engine instead of QT? It's really ugly on my ubuntu box...- skyfex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Perhaps because Opera Software and Trolltech are both Norwegian companies ;)
- TechHerder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7As long as it's Firefox or Opera and NOT IE, it's cool with me. Bring on the innovation!
- TheSeeker11, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Although I really, really like Opera there's just a couple of things I can't do with it ('Organise' in Flickr for instance) that stop me using it full time.
Until these sites catch up, I'll continue to use Firefox. - ptemple, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Shouldn't that be "Opera v9 will be released for those NOT using 64-bit processors"? The next version appears to be i386 only again. Firefox sans Flash stays as the de facto for us amd64 users.
Phillip.- flyinglikeakite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I agree, opera should have a 64 bit version.
- LouisC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I use Opera on 64-bit. You just need to run it as a 32-bit app. It's no slower than it would be as it is 64-bit.
I would like to see it in native 64-bit, though, but seeing as flash isn't 64-bit yet and I need flash, it'd be kind of pointless.
- billmania, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6If Google Calendar would work in Opera I'd be a happy camper.
- LouisC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It works, you just need to spoof or hit cancel when the dialog box pops up saying you're using an unsupported browser.
- Devz0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2well maybe if google would show a little bit of standard compliance then it would work.
- LouisC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Guys, keep in mind that OperaWatch isn't an official Opera source. It's usually right, but for all we know, there could not be an event on the 20th at all.
Also, keep in mind that the event is supposed to be in Seattle, so it could be something to do with Nintendo. - mos6507, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Opera's Javascript/DHTML is slower and less complete than Firefox.
Some web 2.0 sites don't work properly with Opera. For instance, posting right here I don't get any visual indicator that the post is done. It just appears to hang.
I try to use Opera for all my browsing but they really have to get this sorted out.- LouisC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Opera 9 has that all working as far as I can tell. I'm using the latest weekly and nothing "hangs" when I post.
- peanutz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2checking if LouisC is right about Opera not hanging while posting...
- RIPtechtv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I love Opera. I use it 99% of the time. The last time I used Firefox it was version 8.x. I remember I switched to Opera cause a friend told me about it. I just use IE for Windows updates or something that is Java heavy.
- mvrck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've been using opera for years and I wouldn't use any other browser except in instances where websites are not programmed to W3C standards. It has been at the forefront of innovation in browsing - tabs, gestures, shortcuts for everything, highly customizable toolbar etc.
I am currently using opera 8.54 for browsing, email, news-reading and RSS reader. The whole package fits in a < 4mb download. At its fast! FF needs to be beefed up w/ extensions to parallel opera's functionality but that reduces startup speed and opens FF to vulnerabilities that come w/ extensions. I've been waiting for the official 9.0 release and I am glad its finally coming out soon.
Bring it ON! - Securityguru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The thing I love most about Opera is its download/transfer manager. The stop and resume works seemlessly. It is just simple and clear.
- drewolanoff, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1I'll be there, I'm pretty pumped about it!
