- fjsferreira, on 06/16/2009, -10/+201Firefox addon writers, start your photocopiers.
- Sivaram, on 06/16/2009, -14/+200Opera does it again.... !!! Innovates !!!
- Xavura, on 06/16/2009, -7/+152This is brilliant. Whether you like Opera or not, I urge you to at least give it a try.
- dragossh, on 06/16/2009, -8/+148Firefox 4 will have this and Mozilla will claim they invented it, followed by Safari. Then IE 10 years later.
- BenRoth, on 06/16/2009, -5/+86Here's the deal:
This is actually a really useful technology. With some love and attention (from all the coding geniuses out there) this has a ton of potential. The convenience and freedom of this model really opens up a lot of possibilities and options (like getting away from things like rapidshare or IM clients to share a file with a friend, etc.).
However, I'm pretty sure that naysayers (aka Firefox-cult diggers) will win the day. Lots of people just don't give Opera the time of day, even when they truly offer something powerful/useful. I would hope the majority of people that run across this news (particularly developers) will honestly check it out and not just write it off as a non-Mozilla, non-Google headline. How many times have you seen "If only Opera had extensions..."? Well, this might not be extensions, but it also might be more significant in the long run. - inactive, on 06/16/2009, -22/+99Vulnerabilities unite.
- bluesatin, on 06/16/2009, -1/+72"You buy your bandwidth from your ISP, they don't care what you do with it."
That's the way it should be, but unfortunately this isn't the case. - dextermanas, on 06/16/2009, -13/+78FTA:
"Opera Unite: a Web server on the Web browser
With Opera 10, we are introducing a new technology called Opera Unite, radically extending what you are able to do online. Opera Unite harnesses the power of today's fast connections and hardware, allowing all of us to help define the future landscape of the Web, one computer at a time."

Opera 10 build 1589 (windows) : http://bit.ly/ku4ZL
Opera 10 build 4440 (linux): http://bit.ly/10bZO5 - dextermanas, on 06/16/2009, -4/+57No. And we've been through that already with the previous two Opera submissions. Leave Oprah alone already.
- tensvb, on 06/16/2009, -3/+54The best part is that you can make your own Unite server apps in simple HTML and JavaScript (with interfaces for file access etc). The services Opera has shown is really just a tip of the iceberg of possibilities.
- johnnysaucepn, on 06/16/2009, -0/+50It means you can share things with your friends without handing all your files and personal information to a third party.
- ededdeddy, on 06/16/2009, -1/+49It means if you want to show your friend some photos on your PC, or play them a song you like, you don't need to email it to them or upload it. They just go to your UNITE webpage and the stuff from your computer is just there. No upload forms to navigate - it's automatic.
- mattus, on 06/16/2009, -4/+46If half of Digg doesn't get what this is, what chance does the general population have? This suffers from the same problem as Opera in general - it's a good product, poorly promoted.
- almostadesigner, on 06/16/2009, -1/+41"they don't care what you do with it."
They do actually. - ededdeddy, on 06/16/2009, -0/+38@littlerat
1. Yes - which is grand, it's not designed for full-on sites, only personal sharing
2. Only on your computer - your friends can use whatever browser to connect with you on Unite
3. Nope. It's P2P using UPnP so the proxy's not required. It's currently required as they haven't fully rolled out the P2P yet. - chessthecat, on 06/16/2009, -4/+39You know there's a problem when half the comments in this thread are "What is it?" and the other half are "OK. Here's what it does in simple terms."
- quomen, on 06/16/2009, -7/+41Opera continues to be a trailblazer in the internet browsing industry.
- ededdeddy, on 06/16/2009, -3/+36This is a hosted service integrating with the browser feature. It'll take a little more than a simple addon to copy it.
POW is the Firefox extension you're thinking of, it's been around since 1.0 I think, but it's never had anything hosted like Unite to back it up. - dextermanas, on 06/16/2009, -3/+33It's not like we're hosting a full fledged website open to everyone. ISPs won't mind. In all probability, this will use lesser bandwidth than a BitTorrent application.
- betocool, on 06/16/2009, -2/+31Bravo Opera!
- freedomischaos, on 06/16/2009, -1/+29Just glancing at it, it looks like they are running some fancy proxy service for the "hostnames" and not running it on default ports, just proxy you into port 80. It will actually be rather hard for an ISP to indiscriminately determine that you are running a server because the upload port will constantly be changing based on Opera's proxy service. I could be wrong, but if you aren't port forwarding anything via your router for Opera Unite, that is exactly what its doing. Don't take my word on it though.
Also, with recent game releases such as "Halo", "Gears of War", and "WarHawk" running a server on your connection has become somewhat vague because simply starting a game in Halo, technically, is running a server. If you define server as a service that can be externally reached by others. - skiier239, on 06/16/2009, -8/+36Opera Unite builds for Mac:
Standard dmg installer: http://snapshot.opera.com/mac/o100s_6510.dmg
Intel installer:http://snapshot.opera.com/mac/o100s_6510_Intel.dmg - ededdeddy, on 06/16/2009, -0/+25Your friends don't need Opera to be on it with you. Only the host needs Opera - it's open to all browsers.
- Redge, on 06/16/2009, -2/+27This is a pretty good idea!
- rmfootball69, on 06/16/2009, -0/+24No, because you are hosting your own files. Not them hosting it under your name on their servers. If i get this whole thing right.
- howie, on 06/16/2009, -1/+25It's sandboxed, and there are lots of things to keep you secure.
- Foolninja, on 06/16/2009, -7/+31Opera user since 2001 myselft, hell im in Opera right now... booya!
- inactive, on 06/16/2009, -6/+30It seems that OperaUnite will require 3 things in order to work:
1. Your computer to be running;
2. Opera to be running on the computer;
3. Opera's proxy to be working. - inactive, on 06/16/2009, -4/+27As much as I love my Firefox and addons, I still concede that Opera is the leader in browser experience innovation.
- ededdeddy, on 06/16/2009, -0/+23It's not designed for hosting proper business sites. It's not trying to compete with regular webservers. It's just for sharing stuff online in realtime, kinda like WebEx only ten times easier and not aimed at enterprise.
- techtock, on 06/16/2009, -0/+23*4. An Internet connection.
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/HomeAndCommunity/Techn ... - freedomischaos, on 06/16/2009, -1/+23This has absolutely nothing to do with competing with facebook. Everything is still "centralized" just it went from some server grade service provider to the consumer, which may or may not be a good thing.
- neillawson, on 06/16/2009, -0/+20Nah man, you can just download the Internet and save it on a USB. Its like ~22Mb or something.
- blah667, on 06/16/2009, -2/+221. With Opera Unite you don't have to bother your friends with ads.
2. With Opera Unite, everything is published instantly. So if you have a cool photo, or a new awesome song, or just something to tell, you just copy it to a folder, and paste a link.
3. Opera Unite is not for mass file sharing, mass piracy, or mass anything. Think of it as a tool to share things among some of your friends and family. Even right now I'm streaming mind blowing music from my friend through unite. - Hypomanic, on 06/16/2009, -0/+20A spokeswoman for Opera confirmed to ZDNet UK on Tuesday that there is no encryption involved in the Opera Unite.
Asked whether the platform could be used by someone to access data on the host's PC that the host had not chosen to share, the spokeswoman said: "Definitely not — unless they're a hacker."

Laughably the best quote in tech news ever. - ededdeddy, on 06/16/2009, -0/+19It is sandboxed BUT there's always the "human factor" which I think could be a big security risk - i.e. people exposing their computers on purpose without being aware of the real risk.
- blah667, on 06/16/2009, -5/+24This is really a revolution on how you share your data! I really hope that those apt in html, javascript and whatnot will do something awesome with Opera unite.
- CrazySpaniard, on 06/16/2009, -2/+21I read it as Turkish Delight
- AlexHarazim, on 06/16/2009, -2/+20I see what you did there.
- acdtrux, on 06/16/2009, -1/+19Dyslexics untie!
- scarwars, on 06/16/2009, -1/+19Digg isn't what it used to be..
- Plonkely, on 06/16/2009, -0/+17Here's a selection of reasons why I don't leave my computer on at night:
I don't want it making a noise all night; I don't want the room getting unnecessarily warm; I don't have money to burn; I don't waste electricity on a device I'm not using for hours on end; I don't want dust getting sucked into the front vent all night for no reason; restarting the PC clears the RAM; and finally, if something goes wrong with the PC overnight - such as a fan stopping working - it'll overheat and something might get frazzled. - xtraboy, on 06/16/2009, -3/+20With This Opera takes a level UP and my respect!!! Amazing!
- skiier239, on 06/16/2009, -0/+17I dont think that you understand the purpose of Unite
- ededdeddy, on 06/16/2009, -1/+18Hrmmm.... I think Opera has adblock and themes.
- pwnies, on 06/16/2009, -1/+17Let's get some account sharing going here to test this out. Here's mine. http://locke.pwnies.operaunite.com/_root/content/
Disclaimer: I'm on an edge connection so media might be a bit slow. Feel free to join the lounge (IRC) though ( http://locke.pwnies.operaunite.com/the_lounge/ ), there's a bunch of us (about 20 ish right now) in there.
Btw: reddit_usr_arve is one of the developers, and he's currently in there answering questions. - ByteGuerilla, on 06/16/2009, -0/+16I read it as sky rockets in flight.
- Davidz0r, on 06/16/2009, -0/+16The problem is it's against the TOS of many ISPs to host web servers.
- BxBoy, on 06/16/2009, -1/+17He means a Server
