- chris4404, on 10/12/2007, -4/+44It'll be a lot better then the PSP for the simple fact you can use the stylist to surf and enter text.
- BubbaJones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+33Why should it only be cost of materials? Nintendo isn't releasing it, Opera is. Shouldn't Opera have a right to make a profit?

This web browser comes with its own STYLIST? That sounds great. I could use a new look. - Sarki, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Let's hope it's better than thte PSP's browser, which is slow as hell despite being gorgeous screenwise.
- TimmyGUNZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22Now if only there was a way to get it to override the DS' inability to connect to WPA protected networks!
- iluvatar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23the DS browser should be much quicker because it uses some kind of memory expansion through the GBA slot
- Butros, on 10/27/2007, -3/+23Leave your DS by the toilet and throw out all those old magazines...
- Jakelshark, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21It costs extra because of the RAM addon GBA cart.
- theGrue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19More userbase from... All those other DS web browsers?
- Cerberus047, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19it will run quick because opera runs awesome on portable things... i don't think the psps web browser was really optimized for it.
- Antialias, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19You've got amazing business sense. You should start a company.
- lebel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Yeah, this is one thing that bugs me about the DS. I had to "downgrade" my wireless network from WPA to WEP just so I could play my DS on WiFi.
- WeeklyGeek, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16take it to mcdonalds, and with their ds network you get free internet.
- shinynew, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12where would you store it on your DS if you just DLed it? Acually i guess it could just be used only when DLed, but any way im lovin it. And i will sure as hell spend 33$ for it. Hopefully other things can take advatage of the extra RAM
- illt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12size? you can carry this with you in your pocket to lunch or coffee, hop on the free wifi and check email browse etc...
- Dhalgren, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I hope they make a version with a GBA cartridge that fits "nicely" in the DS Lite.
Also, I too hate that they don't have WPA support. I would definitely not recommend downgrading your wireless protection, though. You have three secure options (listed in cost from high to low):
1. Buy a second wireless router (put it upstream of your original router and leave it open, this will provide a wireless signal for the DS and keep all the kiddies out of your file shares)
2. Buy the Nintendo USB WiFi dongle. This will provide an access point for your DS and only your DS. I would put it on your least important computer, though because there's always the possibility that someone could emulate a DS I suppose.
3. Use your neighbor's open WiFi for the DS, and keep yours locked down (this is what I do...) - Kimi3013, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I could use it in my room (computer else where in house) to check email with out having to move (I'm very lazy you see). Useful if you hit a WiFi spot at lunch, and don't own a PDA or smart phone too.
- Butros, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It's not about people stealing your internet so much as being on your network and being able to see your internal IP's/machines.
- Ninjaneer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Actually, the PSP web browser is loads better with firmware 2.71. I'm one of the suckers who downloaded it...no homebrew for me. =(
- kiwiboyus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The first time I heard about this I thought it would be great for when you are out somewhere and need Internet access for say directions, you could just walk into a McDonalds or Starbucks etc open your DS and get online. The DS is a lot easier to carry with you than a laptop :)
- MrTranscendence, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6'Cause my iPod's already up there, you dweeb.
Seriously, I don't understand the animosity. Sure - maybe it's annoying to an irrational and rather stupid guy like you that Nintendo and Apple stories take up a few slots on the front page. But it's not like you're forced to read them. I'd suggest using your *creative thinking* skills to dream up a few comments that don't make you sound like (say) an arm-flapping Tourette victim, and *maybe* getting out a bit more often.
Sounds to me like someone's having a bad case of the Wednesdays. Or of the ****** stupids*. Can't tell. - StuartGibson, on 06/14/2009, -0/+5@Kevin45: Yes, I paid for Opera on Windows. I genuinely felt it was worth the outlay over what was out there. I have nothing against Firefox, but it just doesn't gel with me as nicely as Opera.
- Dhalgren, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"copyright-pirates"
Could you elaborate? I don't understand your question. - ucffool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4http://gonintendo.com/?p=3236
Images of the cartridges. Basically, there are 2 versions, one for each version of the DS that fits nicely.
I just hope we can leave the GBA memory in without issue, so there is only a need to carry around the DS cartridge for networking. I don't play GBA games since my first portable since the original gameboy is the DS Lite, so whether it is a slick slot cover or an Opera memory cartridge, no difference to me. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5http://wiinintendo.net/?p=110 (some screenshots and info)
I can't wait to get this.
DS Lite + Opera browser + Gmail, Google Spreadsheets, Writely = No more need for me to carry a laptop! - zumbojo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5A GBA cartridge small enough to fit flush with the front of the DS Lite would be too small for the original DS.
Then again, if you’ve still got the original DS you’ve probably never heard of the Internet – go bang some rocks together, caveman.
(kidding :P) - Darth_tater, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5nope... for the software to use both screens thereMUST be an allowed (authorised/signed) DS game in the DS slot, that's why you had to have one for the passme. the passme just hijacked the loading and pointed it to load from the gba slot.
from the way that this is sounding, you *will* need both the gba clot and the opera DS cart for this to work - cabazorro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4How long will it take for people to use it to dload porn? Not a kid toy anymore?
- nicko68, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Instead of downgrading your network to WEP, could you use the WiFi dongle that Nintendo sells? I think I read it can coexist with your wireless LAN.
- kcahon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I'm really excited about this.
- e03179, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Opera Mini allows you to surf the web on a mobile cell phone (http://www.opera.com/products/mobile/operamini/). Most all modern cell phones can download this software. That software is free. You just point your cell phone's WAP browser to http://mini.opera.com/ and click on Download Opera Mini. Opera Mini preprocesses webpages on a remote server before sending them to your phone.
I wonder if this is how the DS browser will work. Opera is running on a variety of platforms now.
Opera makes PocketPC versions of their browser (http://www.opera.com/products/mobile/) and charges a small fee to download the application. I suspect that this is how the Opera browser would work. It'll render the webpages on the DS in realtime, come on a card and not be installed on the DS's internal memory.
I wonder if they'll make a GBA version of this software. That way, I can keep the Opera GBA cartridge in my GBA slot freeing up my DS card slot. - teknopagan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Kevin45: I find your ideas intriguing and wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
- Dhalgren, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Then don't buy it...
Whining about the price on digg.com isn't going to do anything to the price. - Dhalgren, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I actually wouldn't be surprised if there was some built in filtering. That would suck, but after the fallout the psp has been getting for being the Porn Station Portable...
- Ninjaneer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2jesus christ, people praise a system or a feature and are labeled fanboys?
Comments that make people think? What the feck is this...a political debate? It's an electronic device that garners attention from a largely tech-savvy audience. If you take it that seriously, maybe you should logout and take a breather. - thestorey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4#3 - lol
- rcomegys, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I'll be in Japan on August... it's like they're paving the way for me. I'm headed for Akihabara as soon as I get out of Narita.
- RandomGuySteve, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Depends on how long I take to drive home, really.
- wolkengrau, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I see everybody saying the price is too high gets modded down. I don't think that should be done, because they got a valid point. 33$ is really much money, even 27%u20AC is still much. This is my very limit of what I'm ready to pay for a browser.
I know Opera is great - I'm using it in this moment -, but still I don't know if it's worth to pay ~30%u20AC to make my DS www-able. - KyleRayner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This sounds like something to play around with for five minutes, then never use again. I mean....why?
And dammit Digg, stop telling me "That item was not found" ARGH! - wolkengrau, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Right. I'm only afraid Nintendo has lost some potential customers.
30 EUR is more or less okay with me, but I don't think it's okay with the broad mass. - ipodman715, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I could use this to surf digg at 1 am.
- FreydNot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like it because you can use the web browser to authenticate your DS with a wifi service which requires you to click on an "I AGREE" button first. Once you do that, then you can use the wifi to play network games.
Without the DS based browser you have to spoof your DS"s MAC address with a notebook. Not very convenient. - SageofLightning, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well the $33 quoted in the summery is likly a direct conversion of yen to dollars, I'm sure Nintendo/Opera will 'round' it off to $29.95 when it comes out in the US.
- gab00n, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm sure the price will drop once it has been out for a while, i would have gone with $29 as it would attract more buyers.
- coonzel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Will this just have more than just basic surfing capabilties? Flash support? Streaming video?? I wonder if it could handle a web instant messenger..
- DenZ88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I've been waiting for more DS Opera news, good to hear that they're about done with the Japanese build.
I'd say the Opera browser could pick up at a reasonably priced 20-30$ price range given that it can actually do some elaborate stuff, ie. display my gmail, flash, save at least 10mb of stuff (ds/gba carts are limited, i can only hope they're adding some caching mechanism).
The DS has so much potential for a browser im just drooling right now for the U.S. release date! - jaijai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If this gets widespread, it will be a good time for more websites to start offering adaptable content more capable for reading on smaller screens with limited javascript/flash, bandwidth, etc. Google has been doing this with gmail, as you can access a mobile version of gmail at http://m.gmail.com/ - I use Opera Mobile on my Symbian-based phone and for a quick pinch, it works great.
- finke67, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I don't know much about remote pc functions, but if you were in a hotspot would you be able to access your home/work pc with your DS? or play music and/or videos that are on your pc through your DS? Because if you could... wow
- gtdfaniam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0there needs to be a "megadigg" button for stuff like this...
