- muka3d, on 11/14/2007, -12/+105I'm tired of people saying that Opera doesn't block ads... Opera has been blocking ads for a VERY long time!
Digg this up to educate people that Firefox didn't invent ad blocking... - mRku, on 10/28/2007, -4/+59You were faster than me... only Opera can be so fast ;)
- johnnysaucepn, on 10/28/2007, -1/+33Personally, I wouldn't want my Opera engaging in the nasty with a browser so willing to let anyone plug things into it.
Brings a whole new meaning to 'Spread Firefox'... - RyomaNagare, on 10/26/2007, -3/+34damn this job of mine, 2:38 minutes too late, to be the first one praising the goodness of the new opera.
I must say i'm really impresed with opera devs, seems like Firefox3 has been in alpha forever now. - fkr3, on 11/01/2007, -6/+36Mozilla is a company with paid employees..... the community just fight over who can promote FF in the most retarded way.
- louiedog, on 10/28/2007, -4/+34I wish Opera would quit being so shy and have sex with firefox already. If I could have Opera's speed with Firefox's great extensions I'd be so happy.
- muka3d, on 10/28/2007, -0/+28Fortunately, Opera DOES block ads, and it has for years!
- nymphetamine, on 10/29/2007, -0/+24I love the synchronizing with link.opera.com. Awesome idea right there.
- Lick, on 10/28/2007, -1/+25Here's the latest Javascript benchmark, with amazing results in favor of Opera 9.5: http://nontroppo.org/timer/kestrel_tests/

- Ramble, on 10/28/2007, -0/+20It's been able to block ads for ages mate.
- bh1nd3r, on 10/28/2007, -0/+18It can check out http://operawiki.info/BlockAdvertisements
- armbar, on 10/26/2007, -0/+17Don't mind if I do: http://digg.com/software/Your_Mission_Spread_Firef ...
- amadeusdemarzi, on 11/04/2007, -1/+16I love opera, and 9.5 is kick ass, except for one bug: Digg homepage never stops loading :(
- duckyinc, on 10/29/2007, -2/+17hurray for opera!
- trex279, on 10/29/2007, -0/+15Yay! Finally... Some awesome new features in there...
- johnnysaucepn, on 10/28/2007, -0/+14Yeah, there's a known bug in the Digg code - apparently a document.write() is never document.close()d, so as far as it knows, the document isn't finished loading.
- Ramble, on 10/28/2007, -3/+17Right click -> block content
- Tippis, on 10/28/2007, -0/+14...which it *also* has been doing for years...
- chugger1992, on 10/27/2007, -2/+15why? Is there a reason I shouldn't? Besides the cliched Firefox dribble, I mean.
- rustedout, on 10/26/2007, -0/+11This is a (slight) weakness of Opera over FF.
OTH, you can block BY SITE via F12.
Try this: Press F12 site preferences(blank area of the screen), DISPLAY, uncheck iframes. If needed, you can also click on SCRIPTING and uncheck JAVASCRIPT.
Which browser is better ? Bottom line is your personal preferences. I tend to use both at various times.
They both blow IE out of the water. You owe it to yourself to familiarize yourself with Opera and keep an eye on latest developments. IMO, there are some synergistics between the two browsers.
Personally, I like them both ;-)
Howard - LucasVB, on 10/29/2007, -0/+10Opera can block most ads if you keep a good filter.ini file around. This place has a great one: http://my.opera.com/Tamil/blog/ad-block
- sensor, on 11/04/2007, -7/+17No one is saying "Firefox invented ad blocking"... that's a strawman.
- philhoward, on 10/26/2007, -0/+9add http://ads1.msn.com/* to the content blocker worked for me someone told me on the my opera forums.
- chugger1992, on 10/28/2007, -1/+10you could just copy and paste a HOSTS file and block ads for all web browsers ;)
- chugger1992, on 10/26/2007, -0/+9http://www.opera.com/support/tutorials/opera/spell ...
- armbar, on 10/27/2007, -0/+9Yup, I've been usiing it for 7 years now, so I guess I'm _still_ using it. Don't get me wrong, I tried Firefox and IE7, Safari, etc, but I always come back to Opera's loving arms. I always feel like I'm trying to do a slalom in a tractor-trailer if I use FF or IE these days.
- amadeusdemarzi, on 10/28/2007, -0/+9Here you go bruvs :P
http://operawatch.com/news/2007/03/ajax-spell-chec ... - magusg, on 10/26/2007, -0/+8Opera + admuncher(best adblocking program ever) = the perfect browsing experience. Kestrel is way fast.
- AlienHairball, on 10/26/2007, -0/+8I'm happy to see Opera getting closer to a new release, but I *really* want to see Opera 9 Mobile damnit! I've been stuck with no real javascript support, no current flash support (only Flash 7) and certainly no AJAX support on my Windows Mobile device for too long here. Can't get the support through PIE, Opera, NetFront... just ridiculous. Where the love people? Where's the love? And no I'm not getting an iPhone just because it has a full featured web browser.
Now I'll crawl back under my rock. :) - MrPillowPants, on 10/28/2007, -1/+8Let me say last week Firefox geeked out, and stopped rendering out css for me. I decided to download Opera after people told me that usually happens with Firefox, and it would come back. Well I messed around with Opera, and now I would like to thank Firefox for ***** up.
- Tippis, on 10/28/2007, -0/+7It bloks pretty much anything you tell it to block. The trick is knowing how to tell it (or knowing how to plug a block list into it).
- CrimsonBlur, on 10/26/2007, -1/+8No, it's definitely a fox in the Firefox logo. He's red because he's made of fire, duh! Plus, there are Red Foxes, but I guess they're not really that red. Anyway, I agree with you, I find using Firefox a better experience overall even though Opera is an excellent browser.
- JQP123, on 10/28/2007, -0/+7"But if Opera is so good that all the Opera users say, why haven't it succeeded like Firefox."
But if Linux is so good that all the Linux users say, why haven't it succeeded like Windows.
Perception is a big part of it. Lots of ordinary folks haven't gotten the word that the fully functional version of Opera is now free; i.e. no license fee. I hear this all the time when people see Opera on my laptop, "Don't you have to pay for that?". - Lick, on 10/26/2007, -0/+7Forgot to mention that it benchmarks a lot more than just Javascript. ;)
- spiffytech, on 10/26/2007, -0/+7I only saw the last beta, but I'd expect it within two months if nothing terribly problematic develops.
- Tippis, on 10/26/2007, -0/+6Flash support is still a lot up to the whims of Adobe, ufortunately... but yes, a better JS engine for mobile verisons is a bit overdue.
- TheSmiddy, on 10/26/2007, -0/+6have you ever visited the opera forums, the users have just as much input as the firefox users do.
- Jugalator, on 10/26/2007, -0/+6Agreed, and before someone asks, besides full domains, it also supports blocking patterns like */ads/*, */banner/* or ads.*
- armbar, on 10/28/2007, -0/+6http://www.opera.com/download/index.dml?opsys=Wind ...
You can get to that by going to the "other versions" link at the download page. - inactive, on 10/28/2007, -0/+6Opera won't block ads blatantly like AdBlock, because websites would block Opera altogether if the dev-team decided to do that. On the other hand, AdBlock is a THIRD-PARTY plugin, which has no affiliations with the Mozzila Foundation. CMIIW.
- spiffytech, on 10/28/2007, -0/+6Alt-page down/up to cycle through tabs in order of most/least recently used- nothing comparable
Right-click-scroll (similar feature)- nothing comparable
Bittorrent- nothing mature
Sync with mobile browser- nothing comparable
Zoom that does more than scale text, but scales the whole page while (mostly) retaining the formating/proportions- nope.
Site preferences- nope
Mouse gestures- no firefox plugins recognize my gestures as reliably as Opera does
Integrated history search- not with a plugin, closest thing is Google Web History.
Easily move the tab bar around- nope. It's a pain to get it on the side of your browser. - armbar, on 10/26/2007, -0/+6For me, even the weekly builds of Opera are more stable than Firefox. When was the last time that you tried it? This beta build is pretty solid (at least the Windows version).
- keyo, on 10/28/2007, -0/+6I agree, they need to sync everything except for cache. Google can't make a sync for opera because Opera is really tight about making an api, security is #1 priority for them.
- PatoLucas, on 10/26/2007, -0/+5I had the opposite situation, Firefox became unstable in Vista (it crashed every time I tried to see the downloaded files), I tried uninstalling it but couldn't reinstall, sadly the Firefox support couldn't help me (actually I felt a little ignored).
Now I have Opera and has been a love affair since day one :) - inactive, on 10/27/2007, -0/+5Dugg for bringing to my mind images of goatse at 8.30 am. Thank you so much!!
/sarcasm - Namakemono, on 10/26/2007, -0/+5http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
- Ramble, on 10/28/2007, -0/+5Change it in the preferences, it's there when you open it.
- keyo, on 10/26/2007, -0/+5It has for a long time, you need the aspell dictionary installed though, I could never seem to get it working myself.
- MattyLite, on 10/26/2007, -0/+5Does it have inline spellcheck yet?
