- eMpi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3IMO the download numbers are interesting as it can be used to compare browser popularity (not usage), all though there's a great amount of uncertainty in the numbers.
This number of opera downloads is really interesting as it shows how the transition from pay-ware to freeware has gone. Though many of the downloads probably occurred out of curiosity from people who have never used Opera before it is still notable. - Complexium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have one thing to say....Opera rocks!!
Fx is great, but Opera is so much better!
Opera - bjohnsonwsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The counter has been at 2.4 million as of yesterday.
- garamon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Firefox? Opera? Maxthon!"
ummm...no. Not going back to IE. Cuz thats all Maxthon is. IE with crap on top. - jiub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I converted from firefox a couple days ago and liking it much better.
- oopsminded, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yellow - "Am I the only one that experiences HUGE increases in rendering speeds w/ Opera?"
No, not at all.

Browser speed comparisons - Seaton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Opera 8.5 is good for porn you just hit F11 and all you see is the pic"
I disagree. Firefox is WAY better for surfing porn. Especially with the bookmarklet toolbar additions found here:
http://www.squarefree.com/pornzilla/ - jay314, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For you Pornzilla guys..
Those bookmarklets on http://www.squarefree.com/pornzilla/ can be used in Opera as well.
Right click the "button" on the page, hit "bookmark link". Go into the bookmarks panel (Bookmarks->Manage) and drag the bookmark to a toolbar.
I haven't checked all of them, but "remove redirects" works. Most of the others I don't need or Opera can already do. - keevols, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i love going back (hold down right mouse button - click left mouse button) and forward (hold down left button - click right button). no keystrokes or cruising the mouse up to the "back" button. pretty ***** awesome.

- worbd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, aren't we the expert analysis today cnycompguy... :)
IE is distributed with just about all new PCs. No, Opera could *not* have had an equal market share.
Too little to late you say? Looks like this is a perfect time for Opera to go free. Firefix is struggling, and BAM there is Opera to save the day. - echimu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To be frank I liked it on my Linux desktop. It is always better to have different alternative ^_^
- SoulJahBN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why RSS bookmark when you have RSS laid out in two pane, Outlook style? That way, it's not limited to 20 or so links, I have like almost 5000 entries right in my Opera's RSS thing. Whenever I need to dig up a story that I remember reading, I'd just search there.
- BanditJing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm one of these Opera downloaders. I must say, I really like this browser. I'm still conflicted over which I like better, though: Opera or Firefox.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I never thought it would happen but I no longer use Firefox. I love Opera's voice features, better tabs and all of the many options that I have to install myself with Firefox. The other bad thing about FF is when they update all the extensions I added need to be updated which takes days in some cases.
- fu_fish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm one or two of those 2.X million downloads. Do I use it though? Not really. I'd use it before I'd use IE, but I still prefer Firefox. I've become dependent on my extensions.
- Jaymis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here's a great resource which helped me get more out of Opera. (updated for Opera 8)
"30 Days to being an Opera lover" http://operalover.tntluoma.com/8/
It blows my mind how opera can be so powerful and fast with such a small download. I still use firefox alongside for some things (Opera still has some standards compliance issues and doesn't display some sites properly), but Opera is so fast and it doesn't require loads of extensions to be installed and configured to work, it just does so out of the box.
Also, opera's email client "M2" is the best I've ever used. It's a completely different way of organizing and approaching email. It also approaches RSS/feeds from the same way - as mentioned above - so you don't just have the last 20 posts from a site, you've got a databased, live-searchable archive of all posts since you subscribed. - Arve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For those wanting to improve image viewing and gallery viewing in Opera:
* Google images frames bypasser: http://userjs.org/scripts/site/enhancements/googleimages-thumblink
* Add more fast forward links: http://userjs.org/scripts/browser/enhancements/add-next
* Automatic image resizing: http://userjs.org/scripts/browser/enhancements/autosizer
* Automatic image preloading: http://userjs.org/scripts/browser/enhancements/image-preloader
* Individual image resizing on page: http://userjs.org/scripts/browser/enhancements/zoom-image
(Disclaimer: I am one of the moderators of the userjs.org site, but I still hope this is "informative")
Also remember that you can zoom entire pages with keypad - and + - CyberWindCloud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just downloaded it...first impression....better than Firefox..
- Yellow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Am I the only one that experiences HUGE increases in rendering speeds w/ Opera? I love FFox but, DAMN IT HAS GOT SLOW even w/ all the extensions (best part) turned off. I am using Opera for that reason.
- lebel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1and in other news, according to spreadfirefox.com, Firefox has been downloaded 92.88 millions of times.
- Fowz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have a high spec laptop...but man....take a look at the size of the process consumption it uses. I uninstalled it and used maxthon instead!!
- mushroom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Opera 8.5 is good for porn you just hit F11 and all you see is the pic
- wingo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Opera WAS,IS and WILL be the BEST WEB BROWSER AVAILABLE"
well i think opera versions 3.6x is the fastest around! any version after that is bloated much like nero. don't get me wrong opera and nero is good programs but not superior in any way. - cnycompguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0opera could have had at least equal market share with IE, and likely been the big dog, had they been giving it away the whole time, but it's too little, too late.
- tribalsun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1SWEET!
I love how people will digg a story saying Firefox gained .0005 more of a market share and how important that is then come on here and complain about people digging Operas 2.1 million downloads in less then a week. That's just hypocrisy. - motionblur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Browser speed comparisons"
Opera doesn't run very fast if it's not installed.
/ I keed... - SuitCase874, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0People should read what I say :( That Pornzilla site's mass of bloated extensions won't work quite as well as a lot of what Opera already comes with.
Also, Opera uses less resources, CPU and RAM, than all other proper browsers.
I'm a zealot, yeah, but I'm not being inflammatory yet :P - Fatalis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Was the link digged? It's dead now.
- tarkam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My two cents.... Opera is a lot better for older people, has the best zoom i´ve ever tried, ie & firefox just increase the font size, while opera increases flash, images, and text! The one tiny thing why I still use firefox is because I truly hate not being able to use the "CONTROL + ENTER" command to auto complete URLs. I know, i´m a baby but have gotten so used to that shortcut that I hate to have to go back and type the www, and the .com . I know that in opera you can type just "digg" and it will try to see weather digg.com is a valid website but for me it takes a lot longer. I tried disabeling the local DNS as the opera forums suggested but it wasnt good enough. My conclusion: good for older people, great zoom feature, popup blocker, etc. I will stick with firefox.
- jark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0anyone know how to do a rss bookmark in Opera like you can in Firefox?
- Sighkick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is there some browser comparison website out there that compares and contrasts each?
- doofus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I use Firefox solely for the fact that it has a better logo.
- d3bruts1d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Does anyone here know of a good resource for all these crazy Opera features? Like a wiki or something.."
Sure...

Need more? ;) - bwmiller72, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree with others that in some ways this is just a number and that a running tally is perhaps just like McDonald's tally of how many served.
However, like others have also said, there is clearly an increased interest in at least trying Opera now that it's free. I plan to try it soon. I've always heard good things about Opera, but have never tried it because it was either pay or adware. Why would I want that when I can get a browser for free without ads?
It looks likely from this that the browser share for Opera will increase. I think this is a good thing. I say the more browsers the merrier. The more successful browsers there are out there, the more it's going to be easiest for websites to support all their users by simply staying as close as possible to web standards. That means websites will work better in ANY web browser, and the browser experience is then better for everyone, regardless of which one a user is using.
I've done web development in the past, and if I do some more in the future, I can see now that the testing of a webpage I do won't be complete now unless I make sure it works in Opera, along with the other major browsers out there. And if it doesn't, I'll fix it by moving my page closer to web standards. - slapout, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"I like Opera, but do we really need to be constantly updated on the number of downloads it's getting?"
Well, Slashdot is always telling us how many downloads Firefox had... - peerk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I truly hate not being able to use the "CONTROL + ENTER" command to auto complete URLs"
Opera can do anything.
First go to:
tools-preferences-advanced-shortcuts
Then choose to edit keyboard setup.
Next go to: advanced-edit widget
Now add the following shortcuts. They will make alt+f1 complete .com, alt+f2 complete .net, and alt+f3 complete .org.
Shortcut | Action
Alt + F1 Go to line end & Insert, ".com" & Go to line start & Insert, "www." & Go
Alt + F2 Go to line end & Insert, ".net" & Go to line start & Insert, "www." & Go
Alt + F3 Go to line end & Insert, ".org" & Go to line start & Insert, "www." & Go

I just found out you can drag a tab into Opera's title bar to pull that tab OUTSIDE of the MDI. - jp10558, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Personally I think all these FF and Opera hit XX number of downloads is stupid. OTOH, If I had to live with months of FF counters going up, I suppose it's only expected that digg will now subject the FF users to the same with Opera.
This is more a failing of digg. - SuitCase874, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0People love to post the Pornzilla website because it's "hilarious", but Opera's fast-forward functionality is actually brilliant for thumbnail galleries etc, its support for tabs or even MDI is miles ahead of Firefox's limited tabs, the Links panel provides an easy index of all files on a page, the transfers window is far more robust, zoom functionality is far superior.. although this is mostly a moot point, any Firefox users should consider this as a pretty representative example of the differences between both browsers - Firefox can do some pretty eccentric browsing stuff that Opera cannot, however Opera tends to have a more reliable and useful featureset built in that generally will do a better job.
Opera is around 3mb to download, everyone currently using Firefox. Give it a shot! It does a lot of things far better. - worbd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Correction: Expert ANALYST.
:) - krisse, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1This is interesting because it demonstrates the effect of converting from payware to freeware.
They doubled their market shares in just a few days - now that is amazing however uncaring you may feel about it. - darrk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0is it to 2.2 Million downloads yet?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Why is this news? My butt has been scratched 1.4 billion times...
http://www.geek2us.net
Coffee - sudonim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Maybe lets just record it when there is something news worthy. I don't think Opera is any more successful given the fact that they got another 1/2 million downloads. Usage numbers are also pretty useless because most Opera users are identified as IE6 by default. I vote LAME
- Seaton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0One word. Firesomething.
I am typing this right now on my Mozilla Firerectum. - OAKsider, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0But Firefox still r0x0rs more s0x0rs. "Secure, tabbed, better" browser, great job Opera! Er.. .
- GuyHersh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I'm voting LAME.. you can just go to opera.com and it gives you how many times its been DL'd..
Who is voting LAME WITH ME.. we dont need this ***** on the front page - portis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I am an opera user, but since I read about pornzilla...damn firefox is for me!
Visit http://www.squarefree.com/pornzilla/ to find out the best way to look at porn via a browser. Firefox RULES!
Until opera has such capabilities, i'm giving it a miss. - Virus08, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Firefox? Opera? Maxthon!
